It is said that reading the Sundara Kand is as good as reading the whole of the Ramayana. Sundara Kand or the Beautiful Episode tells the story of Hanuman and his flight to Lanka in search of Sita Hanuman’s search for Sita takes us through the prosperous streets of Lanka and into Ravana’s splendid palace where the valiant demon king lives with his beautiful wives and sons. When he finally finds Sita sitting lonely and forlorn in Ashoka Vana, he is overwhelmed with anger and sorrow at her grief. Consoling her by speaking about Rama and taking from her an ornament as proof of their meeting, Hanuman gives vent to his fury. He uproots Ashoka Vana and destroys everything in sight. He then allows himself to be captured by Ravana’s guards. They take him to Ravana’s court where he admonishes Ravana and tells him to release Sita or face the wrath of Rama Enraged by Hanuman’s audacity, Ravana orders his tail to be set on fire. Hanuman breaks his bonds and with the flaming tail leaps from one mansion to another setting each one on fire till the whole of Lanka is caught in a raging blaze
This book deals with Hanuman discovering his inner strength and I guess most of us don't know about our inner strength unless someone tells us about it. Then Hanuman finds Sita , this books literally have so much to tell .
With Hanuman made aware of his latent powers, the mighty monkey-god leaps across the vast ocean (while handling many obstacles along the way) and finally hits the shores of Lanka. As he searches for Sita, he also manages a recon of the golden city, its people and the mighty demon king, Ravana himself.
Sundara Kand revolves around Hanuman’s interactions with Sita and the “parting gift” that he leaves for an enraged city as he heads back to Lord Rama with promising news.
Hanuman peeps into Lanka and meets with Sita, thus fulfilling his mission. As an after-thought, he burns half of it and kills Ravana's best soldiers. The pace is slow but I hope the next installment compensates for it.
Book 5- Sundara Kand- of the Valmiki Ramayana series by ACK. This is probably the most popular "Kand" of Ramayana, depicting the exploits of Hanumana in Lanka. Some of the scenes in this book are so well illustrated, just epic!
