Is baby Shira blessed or cursed? If the king takes her before she has a chance to fulfill her destiny, no one may ever know.
Since disease stole her mother at a young age, Rose Caden has longed to become a healer. Juggling her family, her work, and her studies on the edge of a blade, she’s almost made it. But her life is transformed in one night when her daughter’s magic—forbidden magic—reveals itself.
When even her mentors refuse to aid her, Rose must find a solution or risk losing her daughter forever.
------ Note from the Author
Healer’s Sacrifice takes place approximately sixteen years before the prologue of Raven Thrall and tells the story of Shira Caden’s mother, Rose.
It is not an essential part of the overall arc of the Legends of the Ceo San series but instead contains a little bit extra, a peek into Shira’s early life if you will.
Healer’s Sacrifice is intended to be read after Raven Thrall. However, it contains only one minor spoiler for the novel and could safely be read before that book or on its own.
Note: Brother's Keeper, book 4 of Legends of the Ceo San, is in progress, but I don't have a projected date yet. I apologize for the long delay, but I write on the side, and you know, life. I will post on my website and Facebook when it is near or at completion!
This is a lovely addition to the Ceo San books. If you have read Raven Thrall it provides backstory for some of the characters. If you haven’t read any of Ms. Vincent’s books, there is no better place to start.
In a nation where the Ceo San, people with shifter abilities, are all taken into the service of the King as fighters for his wars of expansion, all children are in peril. If any child shows signs of being one of the Ceo San they torn from their families by the King’s guards, never to be seen by their parents again. The temple says the Ceo San are blessed, but when their lives are not their own, it seems more of a curse.
Rose, a young mother, is studying at the Temple to become a healer. She has wanted nothing more since the death of her own mother when she was a child. Her goal is finally within reach. In just a short time she will be a certified Healer. She has a husband who loves her, a father she loves dearly and her wonderful daughter Shira. Rose’s world is close to perfect.
Until, in her sleep, Shira disappears to be replaced by a bear cub. Rose believe the Ceo San should be free, a blessing to their families, but that is not the world she lives in. She and her husband panic. There must be a way to keep their daughter safe. It is inconceivable to hand a one year old over to the King!
In desperation Rose turns to the Temple for help, but in this dangerous political climate, can anyone truly help them? How will they keep Shira from being seen in her Ceo San shape when the baby cannot control her changes? Will they find a way to keep Shira safe and at home?

I first read of Shira in Raven's Thrall, and I fell in love with her. There was something about her personality that drew me to her, so when I learned that Healer's Sacrifice told the story of Shira's early years, I couldn't wait to read it. Reading Healer's Sacrifice heightened my awareness of the environment Raven Thrall takes place in. Shira's mother, a healer in training, sacrificed much for her daughter. As a mother, I can relate to this, as I think most mothers would. The fear for my child's life felt real, as I could not imagine having that type of worry in my life. The seriousness of the environment was lightened by Shira’s playfulness, especially when she shifted into a bear cub. I loved being able to visualize her, both as a human baby and as a bear cub. Of course, Shira as a baby showed her loving, fun nature, and you can see that she gained her strength and determination from her mother. Although I loved Shira in Raven’s Thrall, to me, she did not seem to have a large role. She felt like a supporting character with the main characters, so I’m excited to see how this progresses.
The book follows Rose as the main character who learns that shockingly she has a Ceo San for a baby, and her journey after. It was a very cute book short novel.
Good book, though i felt some points were left out. I was left wanting a lot more than what was put in it. I am hoping that there will be more in this part of the series to follow what happened with the baby growing up to where the novel ended. Maybe show how she learned to control herself etc.
Narrator did a great job bringing the novel to life. Giving each character a good voice.

A mother training to be a healer abandons her quest for formal training. She does so to go into hiding to protect her daughter from the king. The king is taking all children from their parents when they exhibit the ability to transform into animals. Her child has started young and is turning into a bear cub.
Will running and hiding allow her to raise the child safely? Will she be able to teach the child to control her gifts?
I loved reading this free ARC of a mother’s love—the story of a mother who is willing to do anything to protect her child.
The story and writing deserved 5 stars but the ending dropped my rating because there were too many references in a vacuum - I presume these names and places and events and way of life referred to are not actually in a vacuum but refer to other books in a series. If I'm right, the series should be brilliant to read, based on the high quality of Healer's Sacrifice. At least this book finished its story satisfactorily - there was no cliff hanger.
Definitely a short set up couple chapters. Interesting premise of a magical world. The narration could have been a bit better in terms of differences between characters. Overall a decent listening experience, we’ll see how the next book goes.
Parents: nothing super off putting or mature content. If it were a movie it’s probably be rated G.

Healer’s sacrifice is a prequel to Raven Thrall. The story takes place at the beginning of the war when the King’s army takes children with shapeshifting gifts to be trained for his benefit. The story tells of the night that Shira’s mother had to make a difficult choice to save her baby from the clutches of the King. Although it is not a prequel in the true sense, it does give more information about Shira and other characters in Raven Thrall.
A marvelous look into the background of some favorite characters from the Ceo San series. This is an excellent story that deserved to be told. I received a free review copy of the audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in the Ceo Sans Series. It was good as it captured your attention from the start. The storyline was interesting the characters are believable and interesting. The narrator Lynn Norris does an excellent job to keep your interest. I enjoyed this
This was a Wonderful short story prequel to a Series, which now I want to read/ listen to ASAP!! Narrator did a good job with the characters and the writer's storyline is very interesting. Recommend this short story.
This book is kind of a story before the a story and it is amazing. I loved Raven Thrall Which this book takes place before but this was wonderful. The author did such a good job pulling you in for such a short amount of time. The narrator did a great job.
I enjoyed this book as I have enjoyed other books written by this author. It's a believable story, well- written, logical, involving and entertaining. Enjoy !! Phyllis S.
