This book was just part of my goal of reading a book about every president. Finding a book about James Monroe that would keep me entertained proved to be a difficult endeavor. My library had none on audio, and I was not going to read a 900 page book about a president who was largely eclipsed by both his predecessors and successor. The book was very poorly edited and rushed. Three stars because it kept me engaged and taught me a lot about the subject, which was ultimately the goal.

This book is about James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, ambassador to France, governor, senator, slave holder and the person who set up the Monroe Doctrine, something which had an importance long after he died. It was even involved with the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 when the world came extremely close to nuclear war.

He wanted the United States to have a better system of roads and canals. especially since the country basically doubled in side with the Louisiana Purchase. The book discusses a couple of tours he took of the country and how he ran a second time for President unopposed.

He also wanted the U.S. to follow a police of neutrality, staying out of the various European wars that kept cropping up.

To me the major strength of the book is the frequent quotes from actual speeches that he made. We can see the type of language that the man used and the types of things that he considered to be most important.

This is yet another good book in the Captivating History series.

Grabbed this after visiting Montpelier to get some more in depth background. Generally, these books are great for a low cost big picture look at historical figures.

mediocre at best

Although there seems to be scant information about this heroic man, the author’s style is very informal, even breezy. Many typos are scattered throughout, and grammatical errors are numerous. Not recommended.
