The Shatter Me series and all novellas are amazing in my opinion, if you take the time to notice things (like how the more mentally stable/how well Juliet gets to know herself, the less her thoughts are scratched out) then it increases how breathtaking it is, I have enjoyed reading and rereading this book series and novellas many times and I will continue to reread them for the rest of my life. I love this series and it may not be for everyone, but it is 100% for me.

I am so in love with the plot and characters. A lot of descriptions of emotions, touch the depths of the soul. Distinctiveness and originality of each character. They form the harmony that the plot needs. I feel like this series will live a huge impact on my heart and soul. I will never be the same as I was previously.

The Shatter Me series romanticizes abuse; click here for an ongoing, in-depth commentary about abuse romanticism in this series and others.

| Reader Fox Blog |

It must have been over a year ago now that I said I was going to be rereading the Shatter Me series in order to shed some light on the deeply problematic aspects of abuse romanticism that exists within the series. Well, I'd started but eventually lost track due to life and my desire to read books that were more deserving of my attention.

Last night I finally started.

I ordered physical copies of the first three books and the short stories that exist in between them. I opened Shatter Me last night and began. As of this moment, I have only annotated the first nine and a half chapters. It's interesting, reading this book again. I had enjoyed it the first time. Never in my life had I expected that the author would try to manipulate me into liking the despicable Warner.

Forgiveness is important in life, for sure, but I don't think it plays a role here. There are some things that are unforgivable. And honestly? If Warner genuinely wanted to develop himself and become a better person, it should have been with someone else. To have Juliette degrade herself and regress entirely in her character development to the point that she falls for her abuser was disturbing on a number of insane levels.

Warner's obsession with Juliette is terrifying. And I haven't even truly scratched the surface yet.

I am baffled by the fact that people find their relationship romantic. I am deeply saddened by the fact that "broken" characters somehow are given the okay to horrifically damage their partners in the name of love. As if the fact that they love this person makes it okay that they hurt them in these ways.

It doesn't make it okay. He did not deserve or earn her forgiveness. And once I've finished annotating all of these books, I will share with you all why that is.

To any girl who meets a boy who was "broken" by the way someone in his life treated him, who gets treated horribly by this boy -- run. His brokenness does not make it okay for him to hurt you. His brokenness does not mean that he deserves your forgiveness. There are plenty of people who suffer abuse and do not lash out and abuse the people they "love."

Mafi manipulates her readers to try and force them to like Warner. She creates characters and then manipulates them into unrealistic actions in order to push them in the direction she wanted, even if it doesn't actually make any sense to do so. In this way, I see these books as being very poorly written.

But the worst thing of all is the fact that abuse is lauded as romantic in these novels. Warner may hurt Juliette and be forgiven for it time and time again all because, beneath his terrible acts, his motives are supposedly based in the fact that he loves her. Nevermind that time and time again his love is portrayed as selfish and only insofar as she benefits him.

Like the novels, if you wish. But at least like them knowing the facts: Warner is abusive. Juliette and Warner are in an abusive relationship.

Review, Rezension (English,Deutsch) Shatter Me – Tahereh Mafi ✨💫*

Shatter Me is the first book in the series of the same name by Tahereh Mafi and was published in 2011. The book belongs to the dystopian genre with strong elements of romance and fantasy – perfect for anyone who loves suspense, emotion, and a little heart-pounding excitement. 💥 I would classify it as enemies to lovers, found power, and forbidden love.

The story revolves around 17-year-old Juliette Ferrars, who has been locked in a cell for almost a year—all alone, without human contact. The reason: *her touch is deadly.* Anyone she touches dies. In the dark, dystopian world where the so-called “Reestablishment” has taken control, Juliette is considered a monster—but suddenly everything changes when she gets a cellmate: Adam. 🖤

💫 Characters:

Juliette is an incredibly fascinating main character—sensitive, fragile, and at the same time incredibly strong. With every page, you can feel how much she vacillates between fear and hope, between the desire to harm no one and the longing to finally be free. Adam is the epitome of loyalty and warmth, and the connection between the two is simply electrifying ⚡ (literally!).
*And then there's Warner—charismatic, dangerous, complex. You hate him... and then somehow you love him. (literally!).
*And then there's Warner—charismatic, dangerous, complex. You hate him... and then somehow you love him. (By the second volume at the latest, I promise 😉).*

Every character has depth—no one is purely good or evil. You understand why they do what they do, and that's what makes them so vivid.

🌍 Themes:

“Shatter Me” is not only a love story, but also a story about identity, self-acceptance, and power. Juliette learns that her ‘weakness’ is actually her greatest strength – a beautiful image for anyone who has ever felt different or “too much.” The book also addresses control, freedom, and the question of what humanity really means.

✍🏼 Writing style:

Tahereh Mafi's style is simply unique. Poetic, intense, sometimes almost like a poem in prose. There are crossed-out thoughts, repetitions, inner monologues – you feel as if you are sitting right inside Juliette's head. This unusual, emotional language ensures that you experience every one of her emotions – fear, longing, love, anger. It's as if you're not just reading the book, but feeling it. 💔🔥

🌌 Atmosphere:

The mood fluctuates between hopelessness and sparks of love and light. The dystopian world is gray, empty, destroyed—and yet Juliette's inner fire keeps shining through. The mixture of suspense, romance, and inner drama ensures that you devour the pages.

And the ending? An absolute cliffhanger that will have you reaching for volume 2 right away! 😱

💖 My conclusion:

I love this book. From the first page to the last, it captivated me, moved me, and made me think. Juliette is one of the strongest female protagonists I've ever read about – and her development throughout the series is simply wow.

A word of warning: it's highly addictive! 😍
I recommend Shatter Me to anyone aged 14 and up who is looking for strong emotions, profound characters, and a dash of dystopia with heart.

5 out of 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A book that won't let you go – in the best possible way. 💞

I hope you enjoyed my review of Shatter Me!
Until next time – and remember: sometimes our true strength lies in what makes us different. 💫🫶🏼📖

Deutsch:
Rezension: Shatter Me (Ich fürchte mich nicht) – Tahereh Mafi ✨💫*

Kleine Warnung: Es besteht akute Suchtgefahr! 😍

ok i havent read this book in a while so i dont remember the names of the characters so im just going to refer to them as that guy or something. first this book fuckign sucks, dont even consider reading it because its so fucking bad. the plot is all over the place, excruciatingly boring and it feels like the DRAFT of a fanfiction written by a 15 year old kid. Like the author keeps addinf stupid shit to make the story align better like the two random guys that like the main character girl happens to be the only ones with the power to be able to touch her, what a load of fucking bullshit. Also everyone is always talking about how the enemies to lovers is so good in the book but its not even there, like the bad guy is head over heels for the main girl and rhe main girl has zero attraction for him. Like not a single ounce of “i hate him but hes jinda cute” kind of thing and i get how some ppl hate when enemies to lovers tropes arent actul enemies in the first half but its fucking weird and creepy when the guy is constantly forcing himself onto the girl who is CLEARLY uncomfortable and not wanting to do witb that. Has the author heard of consent?? Like the whole thing where the enemies start makeing out in an unlikey event i think is pretty nice but both of them are supposed to WANT it. Like homegirl was getting sexually assaulted and literally tried to kill him to get away and everyone is romanticizing it? what the fuck???? Ok and in the second book where she randomly out of fucking nowhere decides hes so endearing like it happened so fast and was so out of character too like it doesnt make sense at all what the fuck was the author thinking. thats as far as i read because i decided i would not force myself to read the rest of this garbage.

I absolutely adored this series!
This was the first series that I read, so it has a huge place in my heart, and I miss these characters so much. These books had so many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, making it so easy to get through these books in a week! I will say there will be times where it’s a bit slow, but the reward is unbelievably worth it!

whoa! my friends told me that these novellas wouldn't be interesting and that I should drop the idea of reading this and boy were they wrong.
But I would not suggest this to those who are sensitive to child abuse, violence, psychosis and mental asylums. I couldn't place the book down, such an interesting plot line.
The dystopian factor did remind me of Roth's "The Divergent" series.

I don’t understand the hype on this series...it was okay I guess.
The main lead was annoying and her monologues are quite whiny. I don’t think warner is a good “book boyfriend” he is still toxic and normalizing those behaviors might not be the best. That might be a little hypocritical from me since I do enjoy some toxic book boys, as long as they are well written. Warner was not it. This being said I did enjoy the style the writing had at least for descriptions. That an Kenji is what brings this book series to a 3/5

I literally DNF this series because there did NOT need to be this many books. I thought the writing style was different, but I could not get myself to like this plot or these characters. It did keep me busy for a couple days so that’s a positive
