The True and the Crown #1

Three Kinds of Wicked

Rate this book
Freshman year is rough. Especially as the daughter of the dark lord.

After her evil father was defeated, a young Tera Vonaghan was thrown from her world to Earth. After five years of hardship and abuse, Tera suddenly receives an invitation back to the magical realm.

Her presence at her new college ignites the campus. Hidden among the people who hate her family are the True, loyalists to her father. They hope Tera will be the face of their revolution.
Tera needs to stay in Avalon and become a magician again. She doesn’t want anything to do with the True or to serve as a pawn to the Crown. But no one cares what Tera herself wants – no one except three alluring men who seem willing to give Tera a second chance. For the first time since she was banished, Tera’s found someone to trust, and someone who trusts her.

When the first body marked with her father’s sacrificial runes shows up on campus, however, Tera fears that her three friends may be more dangerous than she imagines. She’s ready to fight for herself, for her magic, and for her world. But will she lose the battle and find herself banished again?

Three Kinds of Wicked is a reverse harem romance. Welcome to a world where redemption is possible, where friendship and adventure and magic abound, and where love means never having to choose.

Wanted to like this book but I have a hard line I will not cross because I personally do not enjoy m/m love so as soon as I got to the scene that said two of the guys she likes are sleeping together I put the book down and will not finish. The authors story was building nicely otherwise.

This book was almost so good. Which is more frustrating than if it had been not good, you know what I mean?

There was some super readable lines in here. Enjoyable inner dialogue. A wonderful plot. I loved the concept: Tera, daughter of the Big Bad Dark Lord, gets booted out of the magical community as a consequence of his sins but returns for college, uneasy in a world where she's not trusted. Worried that the world's cruelty will push her right into her father's footsteps, three (hot, well-trained, powerful, etc., etc.) seniors take charge of her well-being.

That sounds so good! And the beginning was executed really well. What killed this book for me was how blazingly fast we moved from point A to point B. Tera's awkward transition back into the community was nice and slow, but she got close to the love interests in the span of...a week? If there was a time skip forward, I missed it. It felt like there was INSTANT progression in their relationships. There were a few chapters of Tera thinking oh, this is so stupid--yes, they're attractive, but don't be fooled, they have to have a motive followed by cuddles and make outs and...why? Why so fast? Especially when this was going to be a longer series all along?

I'd definitely check out this author in the future. But this was a let down.

This was a really good book. I liked Tera and her guys (although that pesky secret needs telling, cough cough) and I liked Stelly, her friend.

I also thought that Tera - a vanquished Dark Lord's daughter - made a really unique main character, and had had different than normal experiences. Generally, with books about magic schools/colleges the main characters are nobodies, or children of parents who are very powerful/famous and have expectations. Not the daughters of Dark Lords, who were sent to Earth when they were 13 after their fathers were defeated, and can't even use magic. Plus, y'know, most everybody hates them.

Other than that, though, Tera was in equal parts scared to trust and desperately wanting to have her own people to love her. It was both sad and hopeful. Tera was snarky, and she wanted to be able to stand on her own (literally, in one case) and she tried to push the guys away, but they kept coming back (partly cause they like her, partly cause of the secret, bleh).

The story itself was a little slow, but it was entertaining. It was a bit more about the characters getting to know each other than it was the plot really moving forward.

4 stars. I will read book 2.

The Sins of the Father

This book was not exactly what I expected it would be like as I thought the main character would be less scared and timid and more feearless. Most of the first book was about her relationship with the three boys which happened really quickly despite them keeping secrets from her and it seemed less believable rather than taking more time. Having no magic at all was another blow as it would have been more fun for her to be powerful rather than have no magic at all to defend herself with. I liked the Lost Quuen series and was hoping that this one would be great but if book 2 does not deliver I won't continue on with the other books.

Fun Young Adult RH.
Great to read how they survive campus with all the paranormal elements.

The start was a bit of a struggle to read but when I set my mind on the Young Adults for the Young ones instead of the more mature Young Adult it went ok. I also have read book 2 and look forward to the next installment.

Tera has been living her life of exile on earth ever since she was cast out of the magic realm Avalon for her father's dark crimes. When she received an acceptance letter to return to college in Avalon, she jumps at the opportunity. But she was unprepared for the welcome the exiled daughter of the Dark Lord would receive. Nobody seems to want her back, suspicious that she will continue her father's deathly ways. For no reason she can understand, three powerful men have her back and might help her to survive her freshman year of college.

Then I hear the soft beating of a heart. Not mine. This is a low, steady rhythm.
I pluck the wand out of the glass. I’m ready to run. I’m ready to club someone with this wand, since that’s all I know how to do with it.
And frankly, the wand deserves a bit of clubbing.

This would have been the story of Harry Potter after the events of the last book if the Dark Lord had a daughter and if Hogwarts was a college. This was everything that I did not know I needed mixed together- college aged Harry Potter meets reverse harem (you know, a more adult version of HP with sex and potential three-soms). There was mystery, magic, unsaid secrets, dangerous secret society (ala death eaters style), a rebellion, college drama, hot helpful men, angst...all ingredients to make up the perfect next fix for my urban fantasy loving heart. Oh, and did I mention baby dragons??

Ok here is a potentially spoilerly side note based on my personal preference- take it as you will. You find out half way through that two of the guys are having a sexual and emotional romance with each other, which I found super surprising. As someone who hates to share in real life and appreciates my RH where the guys only want/lust after the main character, I would prefer if the guys stay in a monogamous relationship with each other- I think they are cute together and would have preferred that relationship dynamic instead- but maybe I am just trying to couple everyone off to live HEA. Just saying, but to each his own. AND it was out of the blue when the heat level in the story ramped up from almost nothing to some potential crazy intensity out of nowhere about 60% into the story.

Overall this was a very interesting ride and I am so into this series. I will be picking up the rest of the books to read because I need to know what will happen next!

I reviewed a complimentary copy of this title.

I’m writing this review on the whole series. I don’t like to review individual books in series because sometimes authors need to do things to keep the plot going that we don’t like.

I just finished the fifth book about 4 minutes ago and this is the second RH that I’ve read, and I’ve read many, where I will have a hangover. It was so good.

Pros...
-no instalove or mates
-fresh story with interesting historical ties
-massive character development for all parties involved
-it was not always a happy thing
-lots of mystery and intrigue
-sassy, good men
-a female lead that you want to root for but also want to smack at times (I dislike when the female leads are always right. That’s not real life).
-world building in a sense. Not SJM level, but enough to know you’ve never read about a place like this before.
-it was told in mainly the female MC point of view but there were a few chapters in each book where the males took over POV. Their POV were fresh and fitting for their personalities.
-cheesy at times but not cheesy enough to turn me off to the series (which is a feat in the RH world)
-the m/m stuff isn’t just sexual. There’s a relational there and I loved seeing it included.
-lots of action which helps the cheese factor. Many rh tend to be heavy into the relationship and the rest of the plot is in the background. This wasn’t.

Cons...
-the sex scenes are a bit tame. Definitely not YA level but RH is known for vulgar sex scenes that melt panties and cause palpitations. It wasn’t quite that intense.
-the author is creative af and there are many elements and plot situations that could have been drawn out to add some extra layers to the story, but she tidied them up quickly. Exploring those moments more would have added to the story. We build up to those moments for a while and then they’re over so fast.
-A little more melodrama from the men would have been perfect. They’re all so sassy and a little more of it (especially towards each other) would have been better.
-the female MC needs to have more training (tiny spoiler in this specific con). We witnessed one training session where she had her ass handed to her but then she’s wielding a sword and fighting like the rest of them.

All in all, it’s in the top 3 reverse harem series I’ve ever read. I will be reading this series again in a few months when I’ve given up on finding another RH on KU that doesn’t make me want to barf.

***SPOILERS***
Tera was exiled from Avalon to the human realm 5 years ago when she was just 13 years old. Her father, the dark lord of Avalon, caused a devastating war that she paid the price for. After living "dirtside" for 5 years, Tera is eager to jump on the opportunity to return home and attend Corum University of Magic. The circumstances of how she was presented with this opportunity are suspicious. Apparently the Prince (who she has never met) paved the way. When she arrives, 3 boys are highly interested in her and determined to protect her. Since most of Avalon hates her and those who don't worship her father and want her to be the second coming, Tera questions the motives of these boys. Turns out, these boys, are marines currently working for the "Crown" to foil the "True" and their plan to get Tera on their side to be the face of the resurgence. Tera doesn't know the boys were ordered to get close to her but she does think she's working with them to uncover the True.

I put this book on my favorites list because it was a slightly unique take on the typical RH main character. Yes, technically, like many over RHs, Tera is downtrodden, a victim of the foster system, poor, etc. However, she wasn't always. And she has the unique backstory of her father being evil and her witnessing (if not participating) in some of that evil. Hardly anything about Tera's childhood and her involvement with her father's misdeeds is laid out for us. However, we do get recovered memories here and there. Tera build a relationship with the boys while constantly questioning their motives in the back of her head. I like how she wasn't fully sold on them and she was smart enough to stay wary.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I absolutely Loved, Loved oh did I say I absolutely LOVED this book. One of my Favourites so far from May Dawson.
Tera was banished as a child because of her father’s actions. Banished from a world with magic where she felt safe and lover to a world where magic doesn’t exist, where she is left fending for herself from a young age and learns to survive after the foster system failed her. She escapes from an abusive situation and learns to survive on the streets until she is suddenly forced back into her old world and needs to learn to survive all over again however this time, she isn’t alone.
In book 1 we see how she arrives at Avalon, how she learns to adapt and how she meets Mycroft, Airren and Cax who become her only friends. But can she really trust them or are there forces at work behind the scenes manipulating her life in ways she couldn’t initially imagine.
This book draws you in quite quickly, The world building is done well as is the character building, Mycroft, Airren and Cax all have completely different personalities and traits which is difficult enough in itself to get right but the way they bounce off of each other is brilliantly done.
Once you start reading you won’t want to stop until you have fully finished the book and then you are left at the end absolutely needing the next book.

Wonderful beginning to a series

If you are looking for a Cinderella story, keep looking. This is indeed a great way to start a series that is sure to be full of rough edges and even rougher adventures. The main character Tera has been through so much in her young life, even before being brought back to Avalon as the most hated person alive. I won't give any spoilers but my word, May Dawson must have worked overtime getting these characters on paper because they are all intense and there are even quite a few very unlikable ones here. Tera will have help in the form of Airren, Mycroft and Cax with a few assists from Stelly Cax's younger sister and her new roommate.
This is a relatively fast paced read with more action and world building than you expect. There is plenty and I am using that lightly, mind you, of drama, angst, and turmoil and quite a bit of anxious nail biting as well. Language is minimal and while there is a hint of lust there are no graphic scenes to take away the family friendly label for readers of a teenage level and up.
I am most certainly looking forward to reading the next book and it is collection worthy,

Good book!

This is the first book by this author that I've read, but I'm already looking forward to reading the next in the series. There were some editing issues I think could be easily resolved, where the wrong word was printed or words were mixed up in sentence making you have to stop the flow of reading and go back and check to make sure you were reading it right. But that didn't distract enough from the story to be a big deal.

I liked Tera, she seems just as she should, being a girl kicked out of her home realm and thrust to earth after her dad apparently went psycho darkmlordmon all of Avalon killing thousands of people. She has a hard time trusting those around her for obvious reasons. But ends up falling into a 3way romance with Mycroft, Cax, and Arrien(love that name btw!)

Great first book. Would recommend for a nice easy read.

Dark Lord’s Daughter returns to life

Dawson does it again. Her words paint a world that becomes more real with every chapter you read. Her characters become people you want to know, you want to be.

As a young woman struggles to make sense of her childhood and the relationship between her and her evil father and find a place in a world that doesn’t trust her because of a past she had no control over, three young, strong men step up for a mission to protect and gather intelligence for the Crown against the True, wanting to stop a second bloodshed from happening when those loyal to her father wish to use her in insight a new rebellion.

Can a group of young people find their way through the maze of truth, lies, emotions and hormones?

I couldn’t put It down, I just had to turn the pages to know what would happen next

Okay so I admit that I have been wanting to try this author for a little while now and just have not had time to work any of her books in. After reading this fantastic start to this series I am a little upset with myself for taking so long. This book was great!!! Tera is the only child of the infamous dead dark lord who was caste out to Earth at the age of thirteen being somewhat blamed for her dad's decisions. She was totally on her own with no back-up which led to a poverty stricken lifestyle until an acceptance letter arrives allowing her to go back. What an welcome back it is too as most seem to pretty much hate her while a group of three guys go out of there way to help raising suspicion. There is some incredible world building going on and the writing quickly draws you in making you not want to put it down. Overall a great start that I really liked so I give it 4/5 stars.

Honestly I don’t have a good reason for not liking this book. Could it be because I read it at 1 AM while exhausted and didn’t remember anything? Maybe... anyways I still thought I would do this review because so many people had high opinions of it. First off I really didn’t like the characters. They all kind of felt flat, and I felt the relationships between all of them were really forced. The main character also seemed to be in a VIP exclusive pity party, and from what I could tell there really was no reason for her to have such bad trust issues (other than her dad being a murderer).
All in all wasn’t terrible wasn’t great. Might try to read it again at a reasonable hour of the day.

I was a little unsure what to expect with One Kind of Wicked. As an RH with a magical twist, I basically expected an insta-lust Harry Potter new adult romance. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to find the couplings set to simmer instead of inferno throughout most of the book with only one (or maybe two) steamy scenes. Did I say pleasantly? Well, of course, I would have liked just a bit more in that department. But Tera, our female MC, is skeptical by nature and constantly questions why our three male MC’s are so quick to accept her when the rest of Avalon seems to hate her on principle. Smart girl. These men, while protective and sweet (mostly), do have secrets. However, Dawson did a wonderful job slowly fleshing out each relationship and allowing the physical aspects to fit naturally into the story rather than dumping them in haphazardly as is seen so often in RH books these days.

Airren, Cax, and Mycroft each have very different personalities that still manage to mesh well enough so that the connection between the three men doesn’t seem forced. As of late, the RH trope seems to be accompanied by hetero males who are content to share one woman, without being attracted to one another. But, Dawson has mixed that up a bit here with two of our MC’s being bisexual and I’m interested to see how that dynamic will affect the relationships of all four MC’s in the future. Oh, and just as a personal preference…Mycroft is my favorite so far.

World building was a little slow in my opinion, with magic being the smallest portion of the story. The climax seemed dwarfed by the rest of the story. So much so that it caught me off guard and made me think, hmm…that was it? But that also could be partly due to the fact that I had to quit reading about 80% through the book and go to sleep. Or rather stare at the wall for an hour and a half thinking about the book. Then I went to sleep. So when I picked it back up the next day, it seemed as if the who-dunnit portion kinda just fell in my lap.

Hopeful for book two.

Props for writing a book about a girl who heads of to a supernatural academy without making her completely unaware of her own place in the supernatural world. Unfortunately for the FMC Tera, that place is at the bottom. She knew it would be though, that's just kind of what happens when you're dad tries to take over the world. What she didn't expect was these three guys who are persistently inserting themselves into her life.

This book was so intriguing. Everyone has secrets and as you get hints of those secrets, it just leaves you wanting more. I love the relationships being built between characters, even as their secrets threaten to tear them apart—not that they know that yet. I like the world that the author is building for us, and I can’t wait to discover more of it—both past and present. I’m looking forward to tearing into the second book soon!

Excellent

I was sceptical that I would like this book having read a few lately that didn’t meet my expectation BUT this one did! I love the world building and the broken but brave MC, and the writing is excellent. Just the right amount of description and action and plot to keep me reading well into the night. Bonus, it’s quite original.

Love this take!

Started to read an excerpt from this series included in an anthology but only got halfway through before I realized I needed to read the series... right away. It’s now 6am and I should have been asleep hours ago. Whoops!
I love learning more about Tera’s past, even if it’s dark. And looove the balance with the guys. Can’t wait to see more!

3 stars for spelling and grammar issues.

The story is good but I felt a little bored. I felt this way with a other of her books. I'll keep going because it does hold my interest but I'm hoping things kind of pick up the pace.

I like that it involves some Harry Potter type feels but with a dark twist. Almost like we're experiencing a Lord Voldomort daughter. Kind of cool.

He ended up in my mind as "Microsoft" and could not get rid of it! Def a 1st for me! Loved the book and On way to second book

I liked this book, but something just felt disconnected to me. The characters are good, but the relationships are progressing way too fast, and they seem a little odd. Stelly absolutely confuses me… Tera is super great sometimes, and sometimes she’s a giant wimp. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I will continue reading the series because the idea is interesting and I didn’t hate this book, so there’s room for improvement.

May you’re wrecking my heart a book at a time, I don’t think I’ve ever had a book where I’m not both on the edge of my seat and crying my eyes out for half the book, you kill me with the heartache and misery real bad before you get to the good don’t you?!

Outcast and reunited

Being kicked out as a child into the earth realm because her father, returning due to an invitation from the unknown, will she embrace the True or the Crown? She has three “ protective guys” and a new BFF is she can get over her insecurities. Easier said than done…. Small cliff hanger until book 2 in this 5 book series.
