A Duke Determined to be Perfect: George Cornwall, Duke of Harley, is a perfect duke in almost every way. . . Just as he promised his father he would be. There’s only one problem. He doesn’t have an heir. When he encounters his childhood friend, Lady Eglantine, again he immediately knows she will be the perfect duchess and mother of his children. There’s only one thing. She refuses to marry him without love. He desires her, admires her, and longs to make her his, but George knows that something so wild as love might lead him from his path of perfection. Will he be able to let himself lose his heart or will his quest to be the perfect duke be his undoing?
A Lady Who Will Marry for Love: Lady Eglantine Trewstowe is interested in only one thing when it comes to matrimony. Love. Having the good fortune to be an heiress, educated, and part of a loving family she’s in no rush to throw herself onto the mart. No, Eglantine is quite happy to wait for an unremarkable match to a marvelous second son who loves his library as much as he loves her. But when the Duke of Harley decides she’s the lady for him, even if he doesn’t love her one little bit, she rejects his cold proposal. . . Even if she finds her dashed heart has been lost to him. Will her merry manner crack the duke’s quest for perfection or will her chance at love vanish?
This was a super light and frothy HR read, which is very light on historical worldbuilding. The story was the most engaging when focused on the interactions between the hero and heroine, side characters and side plots, for me had a habit of side-tracking things rather than adding to the main story.
I’ve not read the book that comes before this in the series, so can’t say anything about repetition etc, but there are inconsistencies in the plot that would usually seriously irk me.
2.5/5. The Duke of Harley made a deathbed promise to himself and his father to execute his ducal responsibilities without fault and he has. His estates are flourishing, his people are well cared for, and he has gained great respect as a politician since succeeding his beloved and much admired father. His mother is however constantly reminding him of his one failing, to marry and beget a heiress - not for her lack of trying to secure him the perfect match. In a rare moment of private time, he takes a walk on his land only to come across a set of dainty bare feet and ankles attached to a less than dainty young lady, his old childhood friend and neighbour, Lady Eglantine. Her refreshing honesty and unladylike demeanour is a breath of fresh air after meeting countless of would-be duchesses. He decides pretty much on the spot that she will do and thought the only thing left to decide on is when and where, only Eglantine soon puts a massive dent in his ducal armour by rejecting his highly sensible and utterly dispassionate non-proposal. And so the chase begins and the proper courting really starts.
Unmemorable with inconsistent characters and plot line. George started out rejecting all these candidates because he didn't want a cold marriage without affection since his parents adored one another. Yet he proposed a practical marriage to Eglantine and refused to consider the notion of love. Apparently he thought it would be too distracting to love someone and be a duke at the same time. Multi-tasking obviously isn't his forte. The protagonists were childhood playmates but she's about to make her debut (?18) and he had already been at Oxford, then at war and back and is a respected parliamentarian and being pressured to marry because he must be getting on. She's his sister's best friend and seemed at home in his house roaming the private family quarters, and yet they have not had much dealings with each others for the last how many years. Please explain? The writing in general is unremarkable.
How to Marry a Duke Without Really Trying by Eva Devon is the Second book in The Duke's Secret series. This is the story of George Cornwall, Duke of Harley and Lady Eglantine Trewstowe. I have read the previous book, but feel this book can be a standalone...if you choose to do that. George's father has died and now he is the new Duke but before his father died a promise was given that he plans to fulfill. Eglantine would be the perfect wife and he goes forward to make her see that but Eglantine has plans of her own. Eglantine has known George for awhile but when he goes forward to inform her that they would make a good couple she declines his offer of marriage. Eglantine is somewhat of a bluestocking with a plan to only marry for love. With money not being a issue for her she can hold out for that. Now George has his work cut out for him to get what he wants most...but its starting to look like her goals are now his. Loved reading their story.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋 Loving this series of Ms.Devon’s, She has such refreshing characters and plots , and they in turn make her books a must for my Library. This is No. 2 in this series and is George Duke of Harley and Lady Eglantine’s adventure, and it really is and adventure, mainly through their feelings and the ton ballrooms. These two had me frustrated but in a good way , wishing they would just sort themselves out , wanting to shake some sense into them . If you never read this author before , where have you been , look what you’ve been missing ! Your going to love this .
I was so excited to read this second story in The Duke's Secret after reading the first A Duke for the Road. Four men, destined to be Dukes, bound together with an unbreakable friendship. This is the story of George Cornwall, Duke of Harley and Lady Eglantine (I love that name!) Trewstowe. The story begins with George's father passing away and he swears to him to carry on the the title to the best that he can. So George is determined to marry and carry on the line. He focuses on Eglantine who he has know a long time as his best friend is her brother Rob. But Eglantine is really a determined bluestocking who will only marry for love as her parents had. Rob quickly asks for her hand but of course, she refuses because he will not declare his love. Oh ho! Thus the story runs a merry chase as each is determined to get their way. What I loved even better is that the first book of Rob and Harry were unfolding as this story progressed. It entwined the plot lines wonderfully and made all the characters come alive. Brilliant Eva Devon! Cannot wait for the next installment in this delightful series and hope it will not be long!!
The story started off strong: George is a good person who wants to live up to his father’s expectations. Unfortunately he thinks this means he must be the “perfect” Duke. To continue on this perfect path, he needs a wife and heirs but all of the girls/women he’s met so far are cookie-cutter debutantes. He reconnects with E, a childhood friend who is intelligent, caring, fun. The next day, this perfect Duke asks her to marry him. So much for thinking he’s intelligent. The book is best when the H and h are interacting. It gets side tracked with a couple of scandals and a kidnapping. Small annoyances: heroine’s name and labeling George a rake.
This book coincides with A Duke for the Road. Eglentine is Harriet's best friend and George is Harriet's brother & Rob's friend. I would recommend reading them in order. I loved both books! The loyalty between friends and family, the twists and turns in relationships and the surprise plot twists!
Ms. Devon has written another great story. I am really enjoying this new series.
George Cornwall, Duke of Harley knows he needs to marry and then start a family. He just thinks that he can choose a girl and ask her to marry him and then go on with his life.
Lady Eglantine wants to marry and start a family. She has decided a second son will suit her just fine. She wants a love match and will accept nothing less.
I like stories where the people know each other from childhood. These two have a history and a past with each other. He is used to getting what he wants and she isn’t willing to give up her dream and wish for love just because he proposed.
If you like friends to lovers stories then give this one a shot. You won’t be disappointed and you will also meet some interesting people along the way.

My Thoughts:
I knew as soon as I laid eyes on the cover that I had to read this latest book by Eva Devon. Her books always entertain me. Her writing style draws me in from the first chapter. I love the humorous style and the somewhat serious characters.
George is a duke and he had made a promise to his now deceased father to be the best duke ever. He and Eglantine have been friends for as long as either of them remembers. So when George decided he needs to marry Eglantine is the first lady who comes to mind.
Childhood friendship is one thing but marriage without benefit of a truly passionate love is not to be borne by Eglantine. She will marry only for love.
Will this pair realize their feelings before it is too late?
I gave this sometimes delightful, somewhat exasperating tale 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 2 of 5 flames. This is a clean recency without explicit physical intimacy until the end of the tale.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book to read by invitation. This in no way affected my opinion of this delightful romance which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
As you can see by the speed read of Book 2, how totally enthralled I am with this series. I had barely put down Rob’s book that this one popped up on my feed much to my glee. It’s the waiting for the next book that is the only flaw in a series, they take too long!! But this one was ready and waiting for me, even before I finished book 1… of course., now there is no book 3, and I am totally bereft!!! To get back to Book 2, How to Marry a Duke Without Really Trying, which is the story of Duke No. 2, George Cornwall, Duke of Harley, aka Harry’s older brother and Rob’s best friend. Again we have a ‘childhood friends discovering each other in adulthood’ plot that is always such fun, as the couple always banter about ‘seeing each other nude’ and have a friendship to start out with.
George wants to marry to be the ‘perfect’ duke … marry and beget heirs to be perfect in all ways. In his ‘quest’ to be the perfect Duke, he ignores his feelings and love and happiness and bungles up his ‘proposal’ (it was more of an assumed order) with Eglantine, his neighbour, childhood mate and sisters best friend. It seems everyone from his family to his friends ‘know’ Eglantine and her reactions more than the man himself. And thus begins the journey of George discovering not only himself but also his love. Parts of the previous book were portrayed from George’s point of view, and instead of being repetitive they were well written and interesting to read.
Lady Eglantine Trewstow, was a heroine that one could easily love. She was funny and intelligent and she knew what she wanted. She was a loyal friend and daughter and inspite of all of his arrogance, she understood why George was doing what he was doing. Even though I wanted to go out there myself and give him a good shake.
The rest of the Dukes remained as loving and funny as the previous book and some more characteristics about them were revealed. I love the way characters evolve in Eva Devon’s books… you peel layers in each book till you get to the core in their own story/book.
Though this one did leave me wondering (and scouring the web) as to who would be Book 3… but its going to be an impatient wait for me, as I just CANNOT WAIT TO KNOW WHO IT IS.
“He stopped short, his breath seizing in his chest at the very sight. One did not usually come upon delicate, naked feet on one’s constitutional. One did not usually have such a reaction either.”
“If he had thought her ankles riveting, her gaze, locked with his, inspired by the pages of whatever text she’d been reading, sent a shock through his entire body.”
“Grand men like the Duke of Harley were not for strange girls like her.”
“Have you asked her?” He gaped at his mother. “Don’t all girls wish to be a duchess?”
“Now, you listen and listen well, George Cornwall, Duke of Harley. I thank you for your kind offer, but I cannot take it up. I pray you put it out of your mind.”
“I wish you every luck in finding what you seek and I pray we can still be friends. For I do like you, George. Even if you are being exceedingly foolish”
“Perhaps, you can show her what she has missed.” Yvette’s lips curled in a knowing smile. “Go about your life. Enjoy it. See her. Enjoy her. Be kind. Life is too short to lament.”
“It was indisputable that in his heart of hearts, he’d realized that marriage to anyone but Eglantine would be an unpleasant affair.”
“Please,” he nearly begged. “I have only so much patience. Only so much control. And I do want you. I want you with every fiber, every sinew of my being”
“Thank you, George. For being so good. And it is because of that, that I must say no to you.” She paused. “Promise me you will be the greatest duke England has ever known. Promise me that.”
“God, it’s difficult to be a woman,” Royland growled”
“Lady Eglantine Trewstowe,” he declared loudly for all to hear. “I love you and I call upon you to reject this man and choose happiness.”
“You didn’t believe me when I finally said it. So, I knew I had to show it. I want the world to know,” he gestured to the people who were watching, riveted.”
“he had finally found where he was always meant to be. Right here, with Eglantine.”

As with all of Eva Devon’s story’s this was another amazing read!
The Duke of Harley, George Cornwall has made a promise to himself at his father’s deathbed, to be the best Duke possible a man worthy of the prestigious title....the PERFECT DUKE! The time has come for him to have an heir and find the perfect duchess. Coming across his childhood friend he has the perfect revelation Lady Eglantine Trewstone is the perfect candidate. His revelation has nothing to do with the intense feelings he suddenly experiencing, right?
The only thing Lady Eglantine wants is a love match, having the kind of marriage her parents have is a must, especially since she doesn’t need to make a match for monetary purposes. She’ll gladly wait for a second son or scholar. Definitely not an Earl or Duke for that matter. So when her best friend’s brother (whom she secretly was fond of) coldly proposes to her as if it’s a business arrangement she refuses his offer!
Loved every wonderful page of this second book in the series! The first chapter had me in an emotional turmoil! Then I was totally falling all over myself with George’s high handedness, even though Eglantine had the backbone to refuse until she had the passionate love she always wished for I’m not sure i would’ve if I was in her place! Loved her spirit and determination to still be the friend that George undoubtedly needed. So glad that he finally got the backbone at the end! I recommend reading every single book Eva Devon has written, they’re highly entertaining and full of emotional twists that always leave the reader wanting more of her stories!
How to Marry a Duke Without Really Trying by Eva Devon A Duke's Secret Series Book Two George Cornwall, Duke of Harley made a promise to his dying father that he'd be a good duke. In his mind, that meant being perfect. As in, finding a wife and having heirs and performing all of is ducal duties. Love was not in the formula. Which took the one woman he could see as a companion out of the running.
Lady Eglantine Trewstowe grew up next to the Harley's. Harriet was her best friend (book one; A Duke for the Road) and George was always around too. After a chance meeting with George after not seeing him for years...she still sees him as George, not the duke he now is. That is, until he does a very duke-like thing in his search for a wife.
This series is about five friends who would one day all wear the mantel of being a duke. They had fought in the war rather than stay home and watch from outside. They had bonded together. Strong enough bonds to let the others know when they were being blockheads. I'm looking forward to the next book, as they are real page-turners...and at times...tear-jerkers. **Sexual content http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
By the end of chapter one, I was crying. Chapter two, more tissues. Thank heavens, the next chapters were happier! I never have a lot of tissues in hand!I The lovers re-met, and laughter starts - the humor is a major reason I read this author. But for these lovers, admitting they love is almost impossible. And so, a book commences. I love our heroine. Gentle on the outside, with a core of steel. The hero - solid and hard, with a marshmallow heart, but not knowing it. The two are better developed if you've read the other books, but you can get by easily. I love this about this author's work. If you read the series, you are rewarded, but you are not penalized for not doing so. I thought I had the whole thing figured out, when she threw in a creep. I should have known that there would have to be an obvious villain. And I adore the way he gets fixed! Not the standard fix! Great characters, moving through wonderful scenes, to build a fantastic book.
How To Marry a duke without Really Trying takes place at the same time as bk.1 A Duke for the Road.
This is the story of George Cornwall Duke of Harley and Lady Eglantine Trewstowe she has an awful name!! I didn't like Eglantine she was too naive about the times she was living in. She thought she could be an independent young lady and act and do how she wanted. Well, she finds out at the end of the story that her actions have caused her to be compromised by Lord Haven and not George the man that she truly loved.
I liked George he was written well. I love to read about powerful extremely Rich Dukes and George hits all the marks.
The author is her own worst enemy in writing the first two stories in the series. There is very little said about the Historical Era she is writing about. George and Eglantine are at odds for most of the story. The ending is brief. but this story does have and Epilog which was good.
How many ways can I say I love an Eva Devon book? The H is noble and caring, but just a touch off base on his own feelings. The h, Adorable and smart, but just a little naive in an important way. George Cornwall, our Duke, decides to marry his childhood friend, Englantine, promptly proposes, and is rejected. The Lady wants a love match. He doesn’t think he is in love with her, she’s half in love with him. He’s not taking no for an answer and continues to pursue her, quietly but not aggressively. After a second refusal, he seems to have given up, though both pine for the other. The h is interesting, but a bit crazy to have refused him, and has regrets, but sees no alternative. Then her world is upended, but he saves the Day. Not as passionate as most others of Eva’s works, but still a great and worthy read. I received a free arc in exchange for an honest review.
Eva Devon has outdone herself with this second book in her series. George Cornwall, the Duke of Harley has decided that it is time to get a wife and heir. Who better to choose than the girl next door. In a very Mr Darcy-like proposal, he lays out all the advantages that Eglantine would have as his wife. Everything but the one thing she was looking for in a husband - love. These 2 dance around each other (literally) as they try to ignore the heat between them. You know they are perfect for each other if only they could see it. If this series continues in the way the first two books have been it will be an amazing addition to Ms Devon's work.
George Duke of Harley is convinced he wants to marry his good friend Eglantine and she is convinced love is the only reason to wed! They share and earth shattering kiss and George is convinced he won't fall in love and he needs to let Eglantine go! Well another seems to think Eglantine is a golden goose and is seeking to cash in on her families wealth! Will George come to his senses in time to prevent the woman he admires above all others choose to sacrifice for him to be great? Find out.....
I have to admit that this isn't my all time favorite book of Ms. Devon. But...I've always said that you can till a great book from a good book by the emotional response that the book creates. This book does that. The prologue and the first chapter had me bawling like a baby. The rest of the book was a bit slow and sometimes repetitive. The end of the book was amazing like every other Ms. Devon book. Great easy read for a hot summer day.
I so enjoyed this book. Some series just stay with you as the characters in this one does. They are real, thought provoking and lovable. Definitely cannot wait for the next installment.
Love me some Eva Devon! Wonderful, interesting characters and perfectly written. Devon creates characters that are smart, but not too rebellious. They love but are very lovable as well. I do not leave reviews, but just had to for this one. Going to be one of my favorites for quite a while.
What a lovely tale of George and Egalatine finding their way to a HEA! Also nice to see characters from other books included although not necessary to this story. Wonder which Duke is next?,
Nicely done, if you read the one before this, A Duke for the Road this going at the same time. George and Eglanline have go through a lot to get where they need to be. I like she knows what she wants and needs. Can't wait for the next books.
It's hard to find a book this author writes that I don't like. This is part of a series that I'm reading in order and I'm enjoying revisiting other characters, even if it's just for a short time!
I really enjoyed this book. I liked both Eglantine and George, their chemistry was good. I enjoyed getting to hear both of their perspectives on Harry and Robs relationship, it was really interesting and funny. I liked the pacing in the book, I just wish the ending was a little less tedious. Overall, this was quite a good book, it was easy to read and definitely a page-turner.
