As Daniel watches the life ebb from Grace's body, he wishes they had more time, knew each other when they were young. His wife surprises him by insisting they did. And then she's gone.
He knows this can't be true. Can it? They only met later in life, so why would Grace's departing words hint at a shared youth? Haunted by this notion, Daniel journeys into the past to discover the truth.
'Remember' is a unique love story. Find out how it really began...
I've been writing for as long as I can remember, but it wasn't until recently that it just seemed to click. I've had stories locked away, but suddenly, and unexpectedly, they now need to get out. I completed the first draft of "The Devil's Lieutenant" in just two months, and that was as a result of writing when I had the opportunity to do so. My 8-5 job and family still came first. I look forward to the day when I can be a full time writer who can take my children to school, pick them up and chauffeur them to various activities, with a healthy dose of writing in between. I believe that day might be right around the corner.
Also, my favorite punctuation mark is the semi-colon; it's often used incorrectly, but it's always winking at you!
Unique, emotive and thought provoking - Daniel searches for answers after losing the love of his life.
I was blown away by just how much of a story this Author packed into such a short read, the writing is beautiful, sensitive and compelling and the characters are wonderfully human with a fabulous mix of good and bad. Although essentially a love story it's far removed from a sloppy romance, there's addiction, violence, humour, heartbreaking loss as well as enduring love. The theme reminded me a little of Mitch Albolm's 5 People with a touch of Ground Hog Day, but this is far grittier, hit me harder and dare I say it's even better?
This one is hard to review without spoilers but urge you to pick this one up and read it for yourselves - it's truly outstanding! 5 Massive stars
Having finished Remember by Shervin Jamali, I really am at a loss for words. As the blurb states, yes it is a unique love story but it is also so much more.
Whilst only a novella, this book packs some punches and makes for an emotional read.
We all know we aren’t going to live forever and the thought of losing our nearest and dearest is literally unbearable. How do people cope? How do they get on with their lives? I think Daniels time after Grace’s death goes someway of showing the loss and despair that someone goes through. I didn’t even want to imagine how I would feel if it was me going through the same experience.
It’s hard to say to much about the story itself as it’s one that has to be experienced and devoured by the reader themselves. I think each person will take something different away from this book. For me, it is to make the most of what time we have with our loved ones and never take them for granted.
Remember is very much a story of love. A love so strong that it will last an eternity. It felt very personal reading of Daniel’s experience and his journey searching for answers. I am so grateful that I got to take it with him. An emotional and heartfelt read that touched my heart and soul. Oh, and made me cry.
Not short enough to be called a short story and I cant bring myself to say ‘novella’ so lets say its at 166 not a long book, I finished it this afternoon in one sitting, this was mainly to do with the fact I wanted to see what happened! Daniel is with his wife Grace when she passes away from cancer, both reformed addicts and met later in life so to say Daniel is devastated is an understatement! Daniel decides to have a drink and while doing so he meets a man who offers him a look ‘into the past’ and the words Grace said just before passing about them ‘having known each other for longer’ are about to become a reality in the present!! We then discover how Daniel got to be Daniel his past and what ‘went on’, to say more would be to give it away but suffice to say its a very different kind of story and quite moving Written in a reader friendly way its a book that will give you food for thought An interesting concept! 8/10 4 Stars
The haunting last words of Daniel’s wife, as she lost her battle against cancer, won’t leave him. She told him they had known each other when they were much younger but before she could say when or how she died. Daniel has no memory of it but he is one determined man who will find out. This is not just a love story about the perfect couple finding each other where you sit back and think I wish that was my life because their personal lives are anything but perfect and not something to be envied. It isn’t that they are bad people, just life deals bad cards to good people sometimes. That is what makes it feel it could be me, one day. It is like there is hope for everyone. I don’t want to give away any of the storyline because that is what makes it more the standout story it is. Shervin Jamali captures the essence of what most people want to find at some point in their lives, their soul mate. I love the journey of Daniel to discover his past with Grace and the hard choices that he has to make. A beautifully told story, not of perfect people but of pure love.
This is the first book that I have read by the author and it certainly won’t be the last! This book was recommended to me and having read it, I can certainly see why. Just before Grace dies, she tells Daniel that they knew each other when they were younger, Daniel has no recollection of this. As time goes on, Daniel struggles with this and takes to the bottle again before meeting someone who can answer his questions. This is a beautifully written story that took me on an incredibly emotional journey. This is a novella that packs an incredible punch and I wished it hadn’t ended.
If, like me, you've read some of Shervin's other work, don't expect more of the same with this novella. As much as I liked The Devil's Lieutenant, Remember takes this author up to a new level.
Here we have a unique, thought provoking and entertaining read. If you've never given much thought to heaven or re-incarnation and the after-life, you will after you've finished reading. It's a story of light and dark, good vs evil and the belief in the power of love.
Daniel is a brilliant character who is brought to life within the pages. All his early life experiences have a profound impact on him and I kept hoping he'd find the peace and answers he was looking for.
This book will stay in my mind for a long time to come as I keep thinking about it. I remember feeling like this after reading The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, and I've enjoyed this book just as much as that one.
This truly is a unique love story that drew me in from the first page. The authors description of the love Daniel and Grace have for each another is beautifully written and made me cry. I loved all of the characters in the book, in particular, Brendan, everyone needs a friend like him. This book will stay with me forever and has a special place in my heart. If I could give more than 5 stars I would.
I had read and thoroughly enjoyed Jamali’s debut novel The Devil’s Lieutenant and its sequel Escape From Hell. I found the writing in both spare and simple. Simple, yet with a depth to it, a hidden sensitivity. But there was something else about the writing that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
Then I read this, his latest novel. There’s that now-familiar writing style of his, of course. There are also similar themes in the story: a guilt-ridden protagonist, a fight between good and evil, a search for redemption. But the story is far more intense and moving than the first two novels. It even had this tough guy here shedding a tear by its end. If it doesn’t also move you when you read it, all I have to say is that you ain’t got no soul, brother or sister.
And that’s the thing I couldn’t put my finger on after reading the earlier books. Soul. The additional ingredient. Jamali doesn’t merely convey his sensitivity in his writing, he puts his very soul into it. There are very few writers who are able or who have the passion to do that, which makes his writing and this novel special. Highly recommended.
What an absolute pleasure it was reading this story. It’s not a long tale but wow, what Jamali has packed into those pages is a delight.
The synopsis had me from the get go and I really was gripped from page one, I couldn’t put my kindle down. Yes this is a love story, but it’s also so much more that; it’s funny, compelling, dark and just simply captivating. It’s hard to say anything about the plot without giving things away! Don’t forget to have some tissues handy! Five shiny stars from purplebookstand. Highly recommended!
This was an absolutely brilliant story - it completely lives up to the billing of being a unique love story with a dark twist - I can tell you now it s one that made me sit and think afterwards and not many books do that!
It is an emotional read and it has some brilliant writing. The words flow so well and the characters are superb, the whole thing completely captivated me. It is also a reminder to make the most of what you have as you never know when it will be gone, it is very poignant at times.
No hesitation in giving this one five stars - a very enjoyable read and very, very highly recommended by me!!
This is a great book. I finished it in a couple of days. I loved the way the story flowed, and kept me guessing throughout. It was an interesting idea that worked well.
This novella is the kind of book I love - comparable to nothing else, with a basic premise that makes you think. I found it sad – but only in places. It was very funny – but only in places. It’s a story of enduring love and the matching of souls and in parts it’s tough and violent so there’s nothing soppy about this. It’s about hard lives lived well. If you’re looking for something different, look no further. A very interesting read which I enjoyed a great deal.
I was kindly sent a copy of this novella in exchange for an honest review.
What a gorgeous heartwarming story. The story follows Daniel who sadly loses his beloved wife to cancer, and shows us his second chance at meeting her again. I’m really at a loss of what to write as I don’t want to spoil the story for others. You must read for a quick, heartwarming story. Very short chapters which is perfect for people like me who can only pick it up as and when they have a minute.
Before I review this novella let me add a disclaimer: I rarely give 5-star reviews unless the novel is life-changing or simply so good there is no other option. Most novels deserve a 3-star review because in today's book market most novels are average. That means there are so many good authors it takes something special to stand-out.
That being said, "Remember" is a solid 4-star on the cusp of a 5. The author is extremely skilled on a technical basis (although he has adopted the modern convention of dropping the Oxford comma, which distracted me) and a wonderful storyteller.
The novel was gritty where it needed to be, yet soft and flowing at appropriate times. The combination of hard and gentle wove together into a story I couldn't put down. I won't give away the plot but it was an intriguing love story mixed with noir elements of alcohol, sex, abuse, and drugs. A little mysticism was also mixed in from both Eastern and Western theology which I found compelling.
The author pulled themes and plot devices from several different genres and made them work to create a feeling of uniqueness while still giving the reader the comfort of knowing what to expect. That's not to say it was predictable but we all want our tropes to follow a formula we know. Jamali managed to accomplish that while still giving us a somewhat unique experience: bravo!
Why not give a novella I enjoyed so much a 5-star? Because what could have been an epic read was limited by a lack of detail, and a rapid pacing, that left questions and plot holes. Leaving a reader wanting more is an admirable talent unless it results in the reader saying to themselves, "The story could have been better if only..."
As an author that writes in a similar style, and genre, I understand how it happens. We write the stories as they come to us and our brains fill in the blanks that are not written. In so doing, we forget the reader isn't in our mind, and doesn't see all of the connections, and back stories, that have been built in our imaginations. Had a few, not all, of those details been included in this story it would have been one of my few 5-star reviews.
It could have been epic, but instead it's going down as just a really great read.
Another interesting read from the author who continues to develop both his writing and the theme of death, the afterlife and redemption. Normally I don't go near anything that has the slightest glimpse of a love story, but having read previous work by Jamali I picked this up. And I'm glad I did. Yes it is a love story, but it also a tale of profound loss and the affect on a person (Daniel, in this case after his wife dies of cancer). The narrative is necessarily grim in places (it's not exactly a happy event which has occurred) but it brings a very personal touch and feeling to the story. Well worth picking up IMHO
i have just finished remember. I have a tear in my eye and heart is warmed. I wouldn't normally want to read love stories, but so glad I downloaded this.It takes you on a journey and very thought provoking and have already got the other books in my TBR list thank you x
Daniel and Grace met late in life, which makes it all the more sad when Grace is diagnosed with an incurable cancer. On her deathbed Daniel wishes that they’d met when they were younger to which his wife claims that they did.
On a downward spiral, drinking again after so many years being sober, Daniel can’t stop thinking about Grace’s dying words. Had they met before and had he just blocked it out? Why can’t he remember? A chance meeting with a hypnotherapist takes Daniel on a journey he never expected. So as many of you know romance is not a genre I usually read, because frankly I’m British and emotions make me uncomfortable, but this ended up being a really fascinating read.
While Remember is only short, it packs a hell of an emotional punch! But it’s not your usual hearts and flowers kind of story either, it’s a little dark in places, especially Daniel’s early childhood and his decent into alcoholism.
I will applaud Shervin Jamali for giving a realistic portrayal of the uphill battle of addicts trying to stay sober in a non-judgemental way.
Certain aspects of the story were a little unbelievable but the author wrote them in such a way that it made them seem believable.
I’m not going to say too much more because I feel this is the kind of book you have to experience for yourself and see what emotions it brings up within you.
First thing I have to say about this book is it brought out so many emotions while I was reading, I got so invested in the story I ended up devouring the book.
The story starts off with Daniel saying goodbye to his beloved wife Grace. Having met later on in life they’d only been together for ten years but Grace is everything to Daniel and when Grace passes Daniel is lost and also very confused. Grace told him before she passed that they knew each other earlier than he can remember, but how could that be and why does Daniel not remember.
You just know Daniels journey to find out his past isn’t going to be straight forward and oh boy does it pull on those old heart-strings. I was willing Daniel along, hoping he would find the answers he was looking for, he’s a great character. He’s not perfect but he has a good heart.
The story flowed well and was easy to read and get lost in. The author managed to grab my attention from the beginning and hold it right to the end. This being a novella it didn’t take long to read and the fact that I enjoyed it meant I read it a lot quicker. It’s the kind of story where you don’t want it to end but once I’d finished it I realised it had everything I needed in a story so was just right.
It’s difficult to really do an in-depth review of Remember as it would be so easy to give something away. There is so much more to this story than the blurb reveals so I’m going to leave it there and just say this book is definitely one to add to your reading list. It’s filled with some great characters and left me with a bit of a lump in my throat and feeling of hope. Certainly one I will be recommending.
Do you ever have that feeling of déjà vue? When Daniels wife Gracie tells him with her dying breath that they knew each other before, he starts wondering if they did. Struggling with his grief, alcoholism and her strange parting words, he sets out to find the truth. Daniel is a complex character; a reformed alcoholic that falls off the wagon after his wife’s death, we find out what turned him to drink in the first place. As harrowing as his story is we do have along it a message of hope and love. I really liked this book, even though it was quite a heart breaking story it left me feeling warm and fuzzy in the end. Very uplifting message; that love will find a way. It will appeal to people who wonder about heaven and reincarnation, but even if religion is not your thing this is an excellent read.
It’s important for the protagonist in a book to be flawed, for if the character seems real, not perfect, the reader will more likely bond with him or her. Aren’t we all flawed? Daniel, in Remember: A Unique Love Story is certainly a flawed human being—bitter about his life, an alcoholic, even violent, dark—too dark at times—which was why I didn’t bond with him at first.
Yet later, that was not the case at all. I hoped Daniel would get what he so desperately wants—to see the love of his life, Grace, again after she dies from cancer, leaving him a broken man.
The author, Shervin Jamali, does a good job of drawing the reader into the metaphysical world where heaven, hell, and reincarnation seem possible, even probable. I especially liked how he tied hypnotherapy into the story, although I wished he had developed the topic further (maybe in the next book?) because it fascinates me. Overall, the story left me thinking . . .
All my reviews can be found at: http://jessicasreadingroom.com ~~~~ This review will appear on my site on February 6, 2020. ~~~~ Wow: What a first read for me by Jamali! This is a romance that transcends time/religion and takes you down a path you would never expect to go down. This is the love story of Daniel and Grace and it is not all happy, in fact the first chapter begins with her death and final shocking words to Daniel. The chapters are all very short and keep you reading; as the story progresses you don’t want to put it down. Despite being a novella at a length of just 166 pages, it packs a punch and delivers so much!
Remember is not a light-hearted romance: There are many real life issues dealt with including alcoholism, abuse, drugs, and rape. You do need to suspend your belief in reality due to the direction it goes in.
This novella touches you and the Epilogue just tugged at my heart. This is a very welcome and highly recommended read.
Shervin Jamali's Remember continues the author's exploration of heaven and hell, wrapped up this time in a quite beautiful love story. The story starts, Up-like, with a couple parted by cancer and the husband left devastated and useless without his better half, confused about her last words that though they had met late in life they had known each other before. One visit to an enigmatic hypnotherapist sends Daniel onto a wild journey which shows how he died, goes to heaven, and looks to reincarnation for reunion with his wife. The stakes are high - what if he never meets her and they forget each other forever? The romance is buffeted by darkness, some intense brutality, some bitter humour - but highlights Jamali's light at the end of his cynicism. The book is not my usual cup of tea. It has its flaws. I would have liked a longer story which explored events a little more deeply. It sometimes skirts over complex events that could have done with more drama. And I wish he didn't use "baby" when talking to his love. It makes it sound a little cheesy and dated. But those are small gripes in what is a soaring love letter to the romance life holds if you fight for the love of your life.

I loved this booked and read it in one sitting. The love story of Daniel and Grace is one of soul mates but not without problems. It provides a whole new take on deja vue and what ifs. It is gritty, powerful and compelling. I now need to get more by this author Thank you to TBC Reviewer group for my copy
The prologue brings you in, and makes you grab for the tissues. I've read other works by Jamali, and this is totally different, but it shows the abilities of this fine writer. This is definitely one powerful love story, as Daniel searches for answers to his wife's deathbed insistence. Jamali has a remarkable way of painting this story with his glorious journey. I thoroughly enjoyed this emotional and yet, adventurous unique romance. It shows a depth of destiny and how its embedded into our souls. It is absolutely magnificent! Truly.
Another powerful and compelling read that was over all too soon. I would love longer reads from this author, his books are addictive and unputdownable. Thanks for a lovely story.
I loved this book and read it very quickly because it's fairly short but also I was enjoying it so much I just kept on going. It's about soulmates and has elements of the film 'Groundhog Day ' and an angel. So if you like that sort of stuff, give it a go.
