About the author
John Lennon
755 books1,992 followersJohn Winston Ono Lennon, MBE, was an English singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, and together with Paul McCartney formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager, his first band, The Quarrymen, evolving into The Beatles in 1960. As the group began to undergo the disintegration that led to their break-up towards the end of that decade, Lennon launched a solo career that would span the next decade, punctuated by critically acclaimed albums, including John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine".
Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, his writing, on film, and in interviews, and became controversial through his work as a peace activist. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while his songs were adapted as anthems by the anti-war movement. Disengaging himself from the music business in 1975 to devote time to his family, Lennon reemerged in October 1980 with a new single and a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered weeks after their release on the sidewalk outside his home in the Dakota. Ironically, "Imagine" (imagine all the people, living life in peace) was a featured cut from this album.
Lennon's album sales in the United States alone stand at 14 million units, and as performer, writer, or co-writer he is responsible for 27 number one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008 Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth greatest singer of all time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

The iconic song with beautiful illustrations - great book for small children! Released in July of 1967 I can only imagine how powerful this song 'hit' - the world needed so much love back then. Now it seems we need even more love. Maybe small children reading this book today will learn from the failures of a summer that ended without love long ago.

Delightful illustrations accompany the lyrics to the classic song.

I assume you know the song. Now all you need is LOVE and a group to sing it with. The illustrations are fabulous. Marc Rosenthal takes this bear on a walk as he sings along with the birds, the bees, other animals, kids, and others. As he goes, it becomes a parade walking through town as people watch from the sidewalks, from the rooftops, stopping to join in! It's the happiest book!

A celebration of love and music is displayed in this picture book for a new generation's introduction to the Beatles classic.

How can you resist this? No adult familiar with the Beatles song will be able to resist singing this you children or grandchildren -- even if they can't carry the tune.

Here is a wonderful illustrated book to go with the classic lyrics of this timeless Beatles song.

This book is a pure delight, especially if you are already a Beatles fan who might be looking to introduce the younger kids to the band. This is a beautifully illustrated and vibrant imagining of the song. I wish that every Beatles song was made into a children's book. Be warned, fans, if you read this you *will* have the song stuck in your head. You're welcome.

March 20, 2019I think the art is charming.
I think I really don't care for pop songs turned into picture books.

I have a soft spot for this song and the illustrations compliment the lyrics really nicely.

We are big Beatles fans in our house and so this is one of my favorite songs. It's really neat that the song is now in this fun, colorful picture book. This would be a terrific one to share in music class and definitely pair it with a recording of the Beatles song. And even if you don't have a recording, it would be fun to share this and just sing the words instead of reading it. This would definitely brighten anyone's day!

Unfortunately, I'm not the most familiar with music from the Beatles. I'm a tiny bit familiar with the chorus of this song, but I couldn't even tell you how the rest of the song goes. It's probably why the picture book didn't fully connect for me. I'm sure fans of the song/The Beatles will adore this book.

The song is amazing. This book is not. The illustrations do the song no justice, and the text, read by itself, makes no sense. I love this song, which was written by John Lennon, who was murdered in 1980. This picture book just seems like a money-grab by people who want to profit off Lennon's words.

The love comes through in both text and pictures

This classic Beatles hit has been turned into a beautiful children's book. The illustrations emphasis the clarity of the main purpose of this Lennon/McCartney hit. All you need is love.

Super cute - this is my re-aloud for Valentines Day.

The lyrics of the song are on the page, and the journey the characters take is really sweet. You could easily sing this book during storytime and probably delight some parents.

This is a fun book.
‘All You Need Is Love’ was John’s song. I threw in a few ideas, as did the other members of the group, but it was largely ad libs like singing ‘She Loves You’ or ‘Greensleeves’ or silly things at the end and we made those up on the spot.
The chorus, ‘All you need is love’, is simple, but the verse is quite complex; in fact I never really understood it, the message is rather complex. It was a good song that we had handy that had an anthemic chorus.
Paul McCartney
Many Years From Now, Barry Miles
The BBC had suggested the idea of using new satellite relays to connect the national television networks of countries across the world, to make a live link-up on a scale previously unknown. The Beatles were the natural choice to represent Britain, and they decided to compose a new song especially for the broadcast.
"I don’t know if they had prepared any ideas but they left it very late to write the song. John said, ‘Oh God, is it that close? I suppose we’d better write something.’"
Geoff Emerick
The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, Mark Lewisohn
Our World took place on 25 June 1967; The Beatles began recording the backing track just 11 days before the transmission date. Coming just two weeks after the release of Sgt Pepper, The Beatles were clearly full of confidence, and took a the prospect of a potential audience of 400 million people in their stride.
"We were big enough to command an audience of that size, and it was for love. It was for love and bloody peace. It was a fabulous time. I even get excited now when I realise that’s what it was for: peace and love, people putting flowers in guns."
Ringo Starr

This is not the intended medium for this text. The repetition of the chorus, which itself is the word “love” repeated, just doesn’t read well. For a story time reading, I pulled out a tablet, and let YouTube provide the “reading” by finding a recording of the song by the Beatles. The book illustrates a bear who, woken by the singing of a bird, leaves his forest home, enters the city, and picking up a crowd along the way, interacts with the diverse people there, creating elaborate chalk drawings in the park. Some of the illustrations are bright and colorful certainly, but they would have just as much power I think separate from the book as overwritten with the song’s lyrics.

"All You Need is Love" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney, illus. by Marc Rosenthal
All You Need is Love is a song written and sung by the Beatles and is part of their Magical Mystery Tour from 1967. Between 1962-1969, Lennon and McCartney published more than 180 songs. This particular song is an inspiration for us now, during covid and unrest in our world. This picture book shows how one animal, one child, one adult can show love and spread its goodness to many. Reading this book in music class, hearing the Beatles sing it, and then the class creating their own vocal and instrumental rendition could prove a powerful way to pass along that kindness.
Theme: Music, Love, Showing Kindness
Genre: Realistic Fiction, Picture Book
Grades: Pre K-8

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
From a bird singing to a bear, and on through a host of humans spreading love as they go. Because love is all you need.
Rosenthal illustrates an exuberant backdrop for Lennon and McCartney’s song. Best loved by those who are Beatles fans. Would be fun to play this as a set of slides as you have students listen to the original song.

3.5 stars --Wildly colorful, childlike illustrations celebrate the joyful lyrics of the immortal Beatles song. I'll be honest, I didn't always get how the illustrations "went" with the song, and the Fab Four references were decidedly in the background (a man and sheep posing a la McCartney's "Ram" album cover; a boy in circular glasses).
But maybe that's the point--that these words are timeless, and unconnected to any particular imagery or era. Like the cartoon "Beat Bugs," introducing the music to the youngest audience in a format they most closely relate to.

February 25, 2021Beatles fan? Love a book you can sing the words to? This is both. The text is the lyrics from ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I don't know how well a baby or toddler will understand the lyrics or message, aside from the love part, but it's a nice song they'll likely enjoy hearing. The little bear and loose storyline is sweet as illustrated with Rosenthal's gentle, quiet style. A chubby, thick board book to sing to your little one.

People who know me well would hardly expect an illustrated version of a Lennon McCartney song to get anything less than 5 stars. It’s not just that the song is one of my favorites though; Rosenthal’s illustrations evoke the true meaning behind them. More than a 60’s hippie anthem, with Rosenthal’s artwork they become a confidence building & self-esteem reinforcing tool for today’s parents.

Read this twice. Once, free verse and it felt odd the kids seemed thrown off. Then we talked about the Beatles and played the song while reading it again. That was a blast and a great moment to share with my children.

I thought the illustrations were only so-so, and honestly, I don't know how anyone reads this without singing the song!

This book sucks. It's literally just the lyrics which really does not translate well to a kids book format. Drawings are terrible.

Love the song. The book, not as much. It's difficult to read without music. Reading the same word/lines over and over without a melody makes very little sense.

Lovely pairing of lyrics and illustrations. Not sure how to read this out loud though. Sing it? Speak it?
