Based on the song of the same name by Benjamin Scheuer, Hibernate with Me is a gentle reminder that no matter how sad, small, or scared you feel, you are always worthy of love, and that brighter days are always ahead.
Sometimes you feel small. Sometimes you feel shy. Sometimes you feel worried, and you might not know why.
Sometimes you want nobody to see. Darling, you can hibernate with me.
If you feel scared or lost, or even just a little shy, love means there will always be a place to hibernate together.
The rhymes here are a bit clunky (maybe they work better as a song?), but the overall sentiment, and the simple but lovely illustrations by Jemima Williams made this a four-star read for me.
Told in rhyme and based on a song of the same name written by Benjamin Scheuer, Hibernate with Me makes a perfect bedtime story. Sometimes all kids feel small, shy, scared or lost and need reassurance and a reminder that they are loved and not alone. A mama bear sings to her cub words of reassurance: "Sometimes things can feel confusing/Sometimes things feel gray./But if you're ever feeling...lost,/I'll help you find your way," and ending most stanzas with a wonderful refrain "Darling you can hibernate with me." Mama bear's comforting words remind baby bear that there's a warm, cozy safe place for the cub to be. Jemima Williams' watercolor and digitally rendered illustrations are warm and friendly, and really capture the strong bond between the mother/child relationship and all its emotions. I've read this book a number of times to my young readers and they never get tired of hearing it and exploring the illustrations. The words and music for the song "Hibernate with Me" are included on the back endpapers and we did have a musician visit and teach us the song, which was a lot of fun.
A sweet and gentle book that expresses the unconditional love a parent has for their child. The typography is lovely, and the illustrations colorful as they change through both moods and seasons. The perfect family story that will last, like love, throughout time.
This will make a great baby shower book (I hope it eventually comes out as a board book!). A wonderful sentiment about always being there for someone, through all that life throws at them.
Hugs, cuddles, and warm feelings of security roll off of these pages as a mother bear ensures her baby bear that she's always there for it.
The message in this book is loud and clear, and is one kids can never hear enough—they are loved and have someone who will always take care of them no matter what the situation. The forest scenes and nature give a calming atmosphere as the seasons come and go. Sometimes it's dark, and sometimes it's light and filled with playful moments. Sometimes the bear wants to hide, and sometimes it feels confused. But the narrator, the mother bear, is always there with hugs and warmth and offering comfort. It creates the perfect cloud of happiness as a bedtime read.
The illustrations are as warm as the message and bring across the natural scenes very well. They are simple, yet detailed enough to allow readers to discover something new the next few times they flip through on their own. Baby bear is as cute as can be. Each scene shows a different mood, allowing the reader to connect with the story. The only thing which bothers a bit is the flow of the text. It stumbles a little, and although it is a song, which one can hear/view online (a lovely bonus), even that is rather complicated. It's not one for kids to sing along to. Still, this is a wonderful read with lots of good feelings and thoughts.
I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed this little bear so much that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
The cozy, affectionate illustrations win the day in HIBERNATE WITH ME. They are full of warm colors and capture the relationship that sits at the center of these pages. This book is set to a song written by a husband and wife team (you can listen to the song on a website listed on the book). It conveys a warm parent-child relationship but given its difficult song lyric nature there are lines that read a bit awkwardly. I like the overall message that no matter the season a child always has a safe place with their parent. There are times that "hibernate with me" came across as hiding from problems and the word hibernate so completely aligns with Winter for me that when it evolves into a seasons book it felt a bit odd. Nevertheless, the heart of the book is gentle and reassuring and good.
NOTE: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.
Hibernate with Me is a wonderful picture book. The story features a little bear and his mom/dad. No matter how rough life can gets or how shy the little bear feels, little bear always has a safe, warm home to go to. The words have a gentle rhyming pattern, and the illustrations accompany it perfectly. They are detailed, colorful and fit the moods, seasons of the story. The story was originally a song. The melody is in the back of the book. The lullaby quality of the story makes it a perfect book for bedtime. Hibernate with Me is a gentle reminder that no matter how sad, small, or scared you feel, you are always worthy of love, and that brighter days are always ahead.
Age: Preschool-Kindergarten Animals: Bears Emotions: Unpleasant feelings (worried, nervous, confused, sad, lost) and the comfort of love
Based on this song by the author, charmingly warm illustrations depict a baby bear being comforted by an adult bear after feeling more negative feelings like worry, nervousness, and sadness. An easy story for cuddling and assuring children that they will always have a warm embrace to return to.
This adorable book showcases the love between a mother bear and her cub as they get ready for hibernation. Since the text is written as a song, it flows fairly smoothly and makes for a sweet read aloud. The illustrations are darling and match the text quite well. The book works well as both a story of love (perfect for Valentine's Day) but also as an introduction to hibernation and seasons.
This is a really cute book. The images are great, and the words are good for prompting strategies for managing emotions. It also has good seasonal imagery, but I don't think that 'hibernate' is a great word...Its relation wasn't super clear. Some of the images fell short, but I still think I'd really enjoy reading it to kids.
A very sweet and reassuring tale about the constancy of love. Great illustrations of seasons passing and a wonderful, warm feeling of safety and gentle delight throughout. Maybe too sweet for nightly/routine reading on the whole, but I can see this being a bedtime favorite for a little one who's going through a sensitive or scary time.
A cute story of a mama and baby bear that offers reassurance that no matter how the baby bear feels mom will always be there to hibernate with. She will care for him always. The illustrations were cute. The baby bear's triangular cheeks and hairs sticking out made him seem younger than the mom and showed a difference in age. It worked well.
A beautifully illustrated story of a mother bear and her child. Unfortunately the title doesn't match the story. Hibernate with me is a repeated phrase but hibernation is neither discussed or explained. At no time in the story do the bears appear to hibernating. In fact in the snowy winter scenes, when bears should be hibernating, mother and child are shown quite active.
Illustrations are beautiful and this song, turned into a children's book, shines a light on the love between a mother and baby bear and takes the reader on a journey through the seasons. A web address is posted on the cover and takes you to a website that features the song the book is based on and has additional activity worksheets.
Trough the seasons, no matter how small the worry, little bear can hibernate with "me." Gentle words which can be set to music create a loving cocoon for your youngster. Soft, seasonal illustrations, my favorite is the constellation, help a child recognize they are safe and cared for always.
This is a cute book about getting away from it all with your mama bear, though I think the hibernation theme is more just in the repeated use of the phrase "hibernate with me." I like that the sheet music is provided in the back so you can sing this book.
This is so adorable! The illustrations are just darling! It is such a comforting verse, and I really enjoyed reading it! It is such a wonderful story for kids to read and feel loved!
I assumed this was going to be like a bedtime book, but it's actually about a shy young bear, and "hibernate with me" means you'll always have a safe place at home, I think. I don't think it quite worked as a metaphor, and my kids literally asked "What does that mean?" Told in rhyme.
I belive this book was based on a song, which is also a diffrent type of picture book then the standard picture books. overall this is a very sweet and gental book maybe not a good book for school but more of a bedtime story.
Such an adorable, heartwarming book. I cannot wait to give this to my young niece and nephew! It's the perfect book to read to your kids while they're snuggled in your lap.
A snuggly "I love you" book that would be cute for a bedtime read . I love all of the foresty illustrations and the fuzzy bears as they go through each season.
