Aeon 14: Origins of Destiny #2

Tanis Richards: Operative

Rate this book
Someone just killed Tanis Richards and replaced her with an Infiltrator Chameleon.

While finally getting some much-needed shore leave on Mars, Tanis gets a message from Harm Ellis with instructions to go to Ceres and hunt for a missing operative . . . except she never makes it.

At least, that’s what she’d like her would-be killers to think.

With Darla’s help, Tanis goes deep undercover, tracking the Infiltrator Chameleon from world to world, only to discover that it intends to kill a head of state in her name.

Now Tanis must race against the clock to keep from becoming the most wanted criminal in the Sol System.

Malorie Cooper likes to think of herself as a dreamer and a wanderer, yet her feet are firmly grounded in reality.

A ‘maker’ from an early age, Malorie loves to craft things, from furniture, to cosplay costumes, to a well-spun tale, she can’t help but to create new things every day.

A rare extrovert writer, she loves to hang out with readers and people in general. If you meet her at a convention, she just might be rocking a catsuit, cosplaying one of her own characters, or maybe her latest favorite from Overwatch!

She shares her home with a brilliant young girl, her wonderful wife (who also writes), a cat that chirps at birds, a never-ending list of things she would like to build, and ideas…

A/K/A Tanis Richards: Masquerade. I liked this book a LOT. It’s lighter in nature than many other Aeon 14 books and reads like a humorous sci-fi who-done-it. (After all, Darla gets to play dress up again.). Someone is impersonating Tanis while maneuvering to assassinate the Oligarch. Tanis goes under cover to stop the killing and figure out who’s behind it. 5 STARS!

So my three stars are due solely to my own idea of what I was hoping to read and not due to any bad writing on the author's part. This book was certainly full of imagination and wonderful world building. It just wasn't amongst my favourites in this series. I admit my preference leans toward more traditional military science fiction. This book felt more like a fluffy fashion novel and didn't have as much action and excitement in it. There was a lot of description of various outfits and people's mods. It painted an interesting visual in my mind, but I missed the military kick-ass Tanis and didn't enjoy near as much the different crazy characters she spent the entire book portraying. Still, Tanis is one of my favourite military sci-fi characters and I do look forward to reading the next one, hopefully with less dress-up and more insight into the various things about her past that were touched on in the main series.

I have been a fan of the Aeon 14 books for awhile now. I was excited when M. D. Cooper finally started writing about the origins of Tanis Richards. There is so much texture to this character that it has always been obvious to me she must have a lot of history in his imagination.
I have read this series from book 0 to book 4 now (there are 5...so far). I have the same thing to say about all the Origins of Destiny Books; they are a great ride from page one. M. D. Cooper is the kind of story teller that paints pictures as he goes.
If you have not read the Aeon 14 books there is almost a myriad of starting points. The best book to begin with, in my opinion, is Outsystem: A Military Science Fiction Space Opera Epic (Aeon 14: The Intrepid Saga Book 1). You will know by the end of the book if you are hooked. Enjoy the read :)

Up to a point

I read the first book and liked it pretty well so figured I’d read the second. It was pushing the boundaries of reality a lot but nothing I couldn’t handle. Then we got to Tanis’ Silversquid cover and it got carried away. I mean really? Cutting your arms and legs off just to go under cover? I almost couldn’t handle that but stuck it out. The ending got confusing and the bad guy got away, again. I like hard science fiction as much as the next person but this was downright silly.

Unexpected Twists

Tanis finds her new career as an agent morw than what she thinks as she has to run round the galaxy to stop.... what but it's going to involve more sacrifice than she ever thought and develop skills she never thought she had to solve this as it looks like her enemies will stop at nothing to stop her and destroy those she loves. A different Tanis to what we usually have but filled with great suspense, tech and a surprising amount of humour i found.

It dull around Tanis

Well what do we expect, life is never simple around Tanis, once again she is on a break. But get a call from what she believes to be from her boss, ordering her to investigate what she thinks is a missing agent. It goes down hill from there. But Tanis as expected does not take long to get on the way to find out the truth. Another great read.

Not up to standards.

This was a very disappointing book. I was introduced to Tanis Richards in the Intrepid series. Her character was very good in that series. This Tanis character is nonsensical. The discussion between her and her AI on fashions take up 50 percent of the story. If future stories are like this one I will pass.

What a wild ride!

Reading this story challenges your perceptions of yourself as a human being. There is so much body modification going on in this exciting adventure that it is almost destabilizing to someone who lives through the character while you're reading about it.

I definitely recommend this adventure it is a real page-turner and excitement on every page.

Good fun read this one, was worried about how it would go, as can dislike this kind of story, but happily M D Cooper again doesn't disappoint. The story goes along at a good pace, with some good confusion and tension in the mix, along with more exploration of what humanity and animals are like in this period of Aeon14. I particularly like the dolphins in here.

Great story, good characters, plenty in action.

A great follow-up to the original. Enjoyed the early character development and base story line. Looking forward to the next in in the series.

Lots of weirdness

But nevertheless well done. Tanis has to go through numerous covers, some of which are quite funny. Nice take on sentient marine life but overall the story arc barely moves forward.

Really heroic Dolphins, Orcas and a Squid in disguise.

The imagination of Ms/Mr Cooper has no boundaries. World building second to none and characters that become people you know and care about. Please read all his/her books

Good second installment

Good story plenty of action and adventure. With a lot of humour and weird modified humans. Including Tanis who ends up as interesting modified thing. Definitely very weird this one but enjoyable all the same

Non plussed

Found this book was somewhat disappointing for me. Bit of a pantomime. A bit hard to swallow. Not much action.

Strange.

This story is really, really strange. The things Tanis has to go through are bizarre to the extreme. Very imaginative and fun to read. 👾👾👾👾👾
