The Scourge #1

The Dead Don't Turn

Rate this book
The scourge virus spread like wildfire across the United States and then the world. Turning man, woman and child into blood thirsty animals.

When Joel Garret, a member of an elite tactical unit of the FBI woke up on a fine Californian day, he had no idea the world had already ended. Most of those around him in Los Angeles had no idea either. But as the scourge took full affect and the blood started to flow in the streets, Joel found himself fighting to survive against those that had changed.

Three months later he is running from the things that destroyed the world, while trying to deal with his own demons. A chance encounter with a woman searching for her husband, forces him to confront his past while giving him some hope for the future.

A quick, exciting read. Stayed up 1/2 of a night to read it.

Post apocalyptic, complete with lots of unknown monsters who run around trying to eat everyone. There's people from all walks of life, and many characters die off.

A Refreshing Change

I devour apocalyptic fiction much like the protagonists in The Scourge series devour humanity. However, it's become increasingly more difficult to find a book/series which breaks new ground. Specifically, I'm referring to a) Mostly original plots b) Extraordinary characters c) Remembering to include "Man's Best Friend." So far, this series is clicking on ALL cylinders!

Maxey is an amazing Weaver of Tales. He writes in such a way that one is transported INTO the story, as opposed to merely sitting within the safe confines of "reality" (Whatever that is...) I was delighted to find that when his characters faced with do or die choices throughout this wild adventure, I had no idea which route they would decide to take. For someone who reads as much as I do (often up to two books a night), not being able to correctly predict what will occur ahead of time is a rare and precious gift.

I wasn't 100% sold on it until I was a few chapters in. I kept waiting for the potential greatness of the author and his story to eventually disappoint, crashing down into mediocrity. But, the novel simply kept getting better and better. Now, I'm officially hooked!!

Bottom Line: GIVE THIS SERIES A CHANCE TO CARRY YOU AWAY!!

I enjoyed this apocalyptic /dystopian story very much. I especially like the former FBI agent. The plot was different from most that I have read and I found it entertaining and exciting. There are few pages that don't contain a tense scene that is action-packed. I highly recommend it. I also look forward to the next book in the series. I want to follow this adventure as far as it goes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

An unusual twist to the normal zombie scenario. Joel Garret, an FBI agent gets bitten but he does not turn into a full fledged zombie, most times he stays human except when the hunger becomes too extreme. This story also has a supernatural twist to it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. It is action packed, full of surprises and I got extremely involved in the unfolding of Joel's character and adventures as he tries to help other survivors. A must read!

They're not zombies

Great end of the world as we know it book. Plot was fast moving with an original twist. Characters you like, love and loathe. Not a complaint, I knew that I had a Brit author when the characters went up to the first floor. A nice reminder of when I was stationed in East Anglia. Am going to start the next now.🐱

Better than most.

Despite some editing errors, I really liked this story. It has a nice little twist in the story line, and the characters are defined and likeable. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

A fascinating take on the virus apocalypse type of story. It wasn't zombies, but vampires. A refreshing change from the normal.

This book is a real science fiction thriller, especially as I read it at the start of the contraviras scourge. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Really good read
