Romain Gary was a Jewish-French novelist, film director, World War II aviator and diplomat. He also wrote under the pen name Émile Ajar .

Born Roman Kacew (Yiddish: קצב, Russian: Кацев), Romain Gary grew up in Vilnius to a family of Lithuanian Jews. He changed his name to Romain Gary when he escaped occupied France to fight with Great Britain against Germany in WWII. His father, Arieh-Leib Kacew, abandoned his family in 1925 and remarried. From this time Gary was raised by his mother, Nina Owczinski. When he was fourteen, he and his mother moved to Nice, France. In his books and interviews, he presented many different versions of his father's origin, parents, occupation and childhood.

He later studied law, first in Aix-en-Provence and then in Paris. He learned to pilot an aircraft in the French Air Force in Salon-de-Provence and in Avord Air Base, near Bourges. Following the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, he fled to England and under Charles de Gaulle served with the Free French Forces in Europe and North Africa. As a pilot, he took part in over 25 successful offensives logging over 65 hours of air time.

He was greatly decorated for his bravery in the war, receiving many medals and honors.

After the war, he worked in the French diplomatic service and in 1945 published his first novel. He would become one of France's most popular and prolific writers, authoring more than thirty novels, essays and memoirs, some of which he wrote under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar. He also wrote one novel under the pseudonym of Fosco Sinibaldi and another as Shatan Bogat.

In 1952, he became secretary of the French Delegation to the United Nations in New York, and later in London (in 1955).

In 1956, he became Consul General of France in Los Angeles.

He is the only person to win the Prix Goncourt twice. This prize for French language literature is awarded only once to an author. Gary, who had already received the prize in 1956 for Les racines du ciel , published La vie devant soi under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar in 1975. The Académie Goncourt awarded the prize to the author of this book without knowing his real identity. A period of literary intrigue followed. Gary's little cousin Paul Pavlowitch posed as the author for a time. Gary later revealed the truth in his posthumous book Vie et mort d'Émile Ajar .

Gary's first wife was the British writer, journalist, and Vogue editor Lesley Blanch (author of The Wilder Shores of Love ). They married in 1944 and divorced in 1961. From 1962 to 1970, Gary was married to the American actress Jean Seberg, with whom he had a son, Alexandre Diego Gary.

He also co-wrote the screenplay for the motion picture, The Longest Day and co-wrote and directed the 1971 film Kill! , starring his now ex-wife Seberg.

Suffering from depression after Seberg's 1979 suicide, Gary died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on December 2, 1980 in Paris, France though he left a note which said specifically that his death had no relation with Seberg's suicide.

I wonder if that hasn't happened to the world? Has the kind of human being who is still capable of feeling and dying of shame been pushed aside to the benefit of another, more vulgar and therefore stronger breed that is completely shameless?

Romain Gary suffered from a loving mother. She loved him to the extent that his whole life was determined by her dreams for his success as a French officer, diplomat and writer. All his actions were based on her need for redemption - her need for repairing a failed life through her child.

It is a nightmare of gigantic proportions, and I shuddered more than once reading the autobiographical account of Romain Gary's life, moving from his Jewish-Russian roots over Poland to the Côte d'Azur before and during the Second World War.

"La promesse de l'aube" - the promise made to his mother in the beginning that he would fulfil her dreams! That promise narrowed his path, but it also served as the ultimate motivation when others around him gave up. He understood the attitude of the French capitulation, and acknowledged that they were right to arrange themselves in order to stay alive - but they were right in the same way Van Gogh would have been right to take a decent job and to stop painting. Romain Gary could not give up, as he had to keep the promise he made to his headstrong, embarrassing mother.

How did he cope?

"L'humour est une déclaration de dignité, une affirmation de la supériorité de l'homme sur ce qui lui arrive."

What a brilliant way of describing intelligent and empathic life! And again, what happened to the dignity of a humorous approach to life in our times of public sulking?

Romain Gary's idea is that he has something he is willing to live for (which is distinctly different from being willing to DIE for something!), and that he considers the true tragedy of Faust not his act of selling his soul to the devil, but the discovery that there is no devil who wants to buy it - "il n'y a pas preneur"!

In the end, when he arrived at home in Nice after his years fighting for "la libération", as well as for literary fame and success, equipped with all the military distinctions and the news articles reviewing his first published fiction, he discovered that his mother had made a great sacrifice for him as well. A heartbreaking tale of love and power beyond human reach.

Most of the time, I choked on the omnipresence of this mythical mother figure, but in one respect I fully support her claim for her son: it should have been a Nobel Laureate!

While reading this book, I was inclined to laugh on every other page.

I might have begun the review with only one of those sentences, and still have had plenty to say whichever angle I chose. That's the kind of book it is.

The previous Romain Gary book I read, 'La vie devant soi', was also a blend of the comic and the tragic. But that book was fiction and the author could choose elements for his comic tragedy to suit his purpose. This book is a memoir and you might expect that he would have to work with what he was given. There's only so much manipulation anyone can do with the facts of their own life surely?

Well, not if you are Romain Gary.
And especially not if you are the only son of a larger-than-life mother, and the only focus for her truly extravagant ambitions, ambitions that would seem incredible even in a book of fiction.

She embodies the dual nature that underlies the whole book. She is like the fiercest tornado and the most glorious sunshine, all at the same time. The memoir is ostensibly about her son's life but it might as well be about her own. It begins with her and it ends with her, just as Romain Gary seems to do himself.

He is deliberately vague about where he was born and who his father was, as if a father might take away from the myth of his amazing mother. Instead he tells us a complex origin story that involves his actress mother carting her small child across post-revolution Russia in search of a better life. They move to Vilnius for a time when he is five or six, but a better life is hard to build there so they move on to Warsaw in the 1920s. All this time she's been planning her son's brilliant future, engaging first a music teacher, then a singing teacher, then a ballet teacher, until it becomes clear that he has no talent in any of those areas, preferring to spend his time juggling balls in the air—his humble ambition being to keep five balls in the air at the same time.

Another mother might have given up and settled for a less glorious destiny for her son—but not Romain's mother. She aims even higher instead. He will be a brilliant diplomat, she decides. And she won't settle for him being a Russian, Lithuanian, or Polish diplomat. No, she wants him to have the ultimate diplomatic career: he will be a French diplomat!

And so she engages a French teacher. But not only will Romain be a great French diplomat, she determines he will also be a great French writer on a par with Victor Hugo. So she hires a literature teacher as well.
She also gets him lessons in fencing and target practice, in case he will ever be involved in a duel at dawn like her heroes Pushkin and Lermontov. And lessons in etiquette too, so that he will know how to entertain, especially women—she imagines him as a Casanova figure in addition to everything else! All of this is happening against a background of poverty, the mother and her son surviving on the very little she can earn making hats, though she does manage to pay for all his lessons.

In order for him to become a French diplomat, Romain and his mother need to move to France. She chooses to relocate to Nice where she has a few Russian contacts, and enrolls fourteen-year old Romain in school there while she herself manages a small hotel for its absent owner.

Around this time she figures that if Romain is to have a brilliant diplomatic career, he must join the Air Force once his school and university studies are finished. And so he is eventually accepted into the French Air Force in 1938—on the eve of WWII. It's as if his mother had planned the war so that her son can distinguish himself in battle and be rewarded at the end with a prestigious diplomatic post! She can see it all, and she even plans a special mission for him: to fly to Berlin and murder Hitler! She's certain he'd be well rewarded for that!

Well, we all know that a naturalized Frenchman didn't murder Hitler, and much to Romain Gary's mother's disgust, France capitulated to Hitler in 1940 instead, and the four-year German Occupation of France began.

Partly because of her insistence, Romain joins the Resistance under Charles de Gaulle, and spends most or the war flying missions out of England and out of North Africa, though it is his mother, not Charles de Gaulle, who seems to direct his course, with the sheer strength of her will. He only has to think about her to know what she'd want him to do in whatever dilemma he finds himself. Whether he's trying to land a plane while injured, or embarking on an affair with some woman he's just met, his mother's voice is always in his ear as if she were an air traffic controller—though her expertise goes way beyond air traffic control!

But meantime her health is declining, and Romain's health is affected too so that he spends more time recuperating from injuries and less time flying. But as if his mother in her weakened state were still controlling things from a distance, it happens that planes he was meant to be on burst into flames or are shot down, and more and more of his comrades' names are added to the death lists while he remains miraculously alive. He tells us that of one team of fifty aviators that he worked with in England, only three survived the war. He admits to moments of deep despair in the face of so much loss but says he is always saved by his ability to see the funny side of things—and to hear his mother's voice in his ear urging him on.

Perhaps he was also helped by his childhood passion for juggling because it seemed he juggled with death over and over again—the many missions in planes that barely made it back to base, the many injuries, a severe case of typhoid, even a duel at dawn—during which he heard his mother's fierce encouragement, citing her idols, Pushkin and Lermontov.

The memoir ends at the end of the war but Romain Gary didn't begin writing it until the late 1950s, long after his mother had died. He had won the the most prestigious prize in French literature by then, and had been a French diplomat since 1946—just as his mother had decided in 1928 when he was a fourteen year-old illegal emigrant, newly arrived on French soil.

Was there ever such a parent in history or mythology? I thought of Daedalus and Icarus. Romain Gary's mother made him wings so that he could fly higher than anyone in his family had ever done before.
And his wings kept him aloft for a long time.

È splendido quando Romain Gary scrive che la letteratura è l'ultimo rifugio su questa terra per quelli che non sanno più dove andare a mettersi; più precisamente, a sbattere. Egli ha un talento indiscutibile, un talento che l'amore materno trasforma in un avvenire di speranza. Non riesce a essere mai disperato e triste fino in fondo, questo avventuriero più volte europeo e in mille modi guerriero nell'esistere. Ah, certo, amava le donne molto più delle battaglie, la madre più della vita intera, infatti ricordando il tempo vagabondo, la solitudine percepita in una folla colorata e molteplice, scrive: che lei diventò veramente me stesso, con tutta la sua violenza, i suoi alti e bassi, la sua mancanza di misura, la sua aggressività, i suoi atteggiamenti, il suo gusto del dramma. Lo sguardo di Gary sui fatti della storia invita a diminuire l'entità dell'io, ad accostarsi al sentire di coloro che soffrono e a conoscere la differenza tra il saper mentire senza falsità e il dovere di usare la menzogna per mestiere. Annemin eşi Alev Er'in Şafakta Verilmiş Sözüm Vardı'yı ilk kez çevirmesinin üzerinden 40, benim bu kitabı okuyup vurulmamın üzerinden 20 sene geçti ve yeniden buluştuk. Gary'nin annesiyle ilişkisinin derinlerine daldığı, en otobiyografik eseri olan ve aslında bir bildungsroman diyebileceğimiz bu kitabı kendi "bildung" sürecimin farklı aşamalarında okumak çok iyi hissettirdi - 15 yaşımdayken başka türlü sevmiştim, şimdi başka türlü sevdim.

Alev Abi, Gary'nin hakları Sel'e geçip kitap yeniden basılacak olunca eski çeviriye bir göz atmak için oturduğunda yazarın 1980'de yapılan son baskıya bir bölüm eklediğini fark etti: İlk baskıda olmayan Zaremba adlı bir karakteri (bence harika bir karakter) içeren kocaman bir bölüm. At first I thought I had never read anything like it, but after a while parallels began to suggest themselves. For effortless brilliance and endless streams of believe-it-or-not anecdotes, I thought of Surely You're Joking, Mr Feynman; but Feynman, despite being a wonderful storyteller, isn't literary, and Gary is with good reason proud of his ability to create perfectly balanced French sentences. Feyerabend's Killing Time has the same stylistic sophistication, absurd bragging and refusal to acknowledge authority, but Feyerabend is primarily a philosopher, and Gary has no interest in the philosophical. Ingmar Bergman's Laterna Magica has the searching self-examination, matter-of-fact heartlessness towards women and artistic integrity, but Bergman comes across as completely anchored in reality.

Towards the end of the book, however, I remembered another exiled francophone Russian, guiltily recalling all the terrible things he had done during the course of his life and trying to justify them in terms of his one great love, and I began to identify Gary more and more with the narrator of Nabokov's Ada. Alas, there would be no miraculous reunion in Geneva...

Mình đọc cuốn này vào những ngày cận Tết, tức là đọc trong lúc chờ má đi tha ti tỉ thứ tạp hóa về mà chả biết để làm gì, trong cái khói ngun ngút khi đang nướng sườn cho ba nhậu, trong tiếng thoại nhốn nháo của cái tivi bà nội mở cho vui tai cả ngày, đọc vài trang là chạy đi bán hàng cho mấy vị khách ất ơ cứ nhè cuối năm mới mua đồ và tất nhiên trong tiếng mắng ra rả của má với mục đích dồn cả năm chửi một lần cho hả dạ. Nhưng không, mình không oán trách gì đâu, tất cả những trần tục đó đã được đền đáp xứng đáng khi mình gập Lời hứa lúc bình minh lại, nở một nụ cười viên mãn và cảm thấy được an ủi cho cả một năm qua. Đẹp quá, đẹp đến mức muốn nằm xuống cuộn tròn mình lại rồi lắng nghe dư âm giọng nói của Romain Gary lan đi khắp cơ thể cho đến khi nó tan ra chỉ còn một vũng huyết tương nơi mình đã nằm. Tất nhiên lần hai, má mình đâu để cú nằm xuống đó được hoàn thiện khi đến giờ cúng cuối năm.

Denis Diderot đã bảo Cái đẹp, cái thật và cái tốt rất gần nhau và Romain Gary đã gộp được cả ba điều ấy vào cuốn sách này. Là do ông tài năng, hay chính người mẹ ông viết về đã truyền chúng cho ông trong suốt cuộc đời qua dây rốn chưa bao giờ bị cắt đứt? Cuộc đời mà từ lúc bình minh đến đêm tối, từ cùng cực khổ đau đến vinh quang chói lọi của ông chưa một giây phút thiếu vắng hình bóng người mẹ Nga mang tình yêu nước Pháp ngây thơ đến khó hiểu. Bảo là tiểu thuyết nhưng thực ra là tự truyện, bảo là tự truyện của tác giả nhưng thực ra là tự truyện của người mẹ, bởi không có hành động nào, nỗ lực nào, động cơ nào của Romain Gary mà lại không từ tình yêu người mẹ của mình. Mình rất muốn bảo rằng những ai đã, đang và sẽ làm mẹ phải đọc cuốn sách này ngay trước khi tạo ra một sinh linh với tham vọng nó sẽ trở thành anh hùng, là vĩ nhân của nhân loại và chuẩn bị tinh thần rằng phải yêu thương, hi sinh cho nó hơn tất cả tình yêu, sự hi sinh bạn có thể tưởng ra được. Nhưng mình cũng ngại ngần một điều, một đứa trẻ ở thuở bình minh cuộc đời mình được tưới tắm trong dòng sông yêu thương dồi dào đến vậy thì suốt đời nó tránh làm sao được cảnh chết khát bên bờ những con suối nghèo nàn khác?

Romain Gary cứ khiến mình nghĩ đến Saint-Ex, một phần vì cả hai đều là nhà văn Pháp, một phần cả hai là phi công trong WWII, nhưng phần lớn là chất thơ nảy nở trong từng câu chữ của hai người. Nếu chất thơ của Saint-Ex mọc lên trong gang thép không giấu nổi chất bi tráng sánh với thiên nhiên thì Romain Gary lại mang màu sắc hài hước châm biếm và khả năng liên tưởng vô hạn. Saint-Ex vẽ nên những trận chiến với bầu trời vừa rực rỡ vừa thoát tục để che đi những khổ đau mất mát của đời ông thì Gary lại phơi bày những trần tục, bỉ cực, nhầy nhụa bất công, thống khổ lên trên trang sách, chỉ trỏ từng thứ rồi bỡn cợt chúng, ví von liên tưởng chúng với thứ này thứ kia. Nhiều đoạn mình không biết nên cười hay nên méo khi đọc phải. Chất thơ của ông còn được bổ trợ bởi cách hành văn của Gary, rằng câu chữ dài, cực dài, có câu còn dài nửa trang sách với đầy đủ ngữ pháp và ý tứ dồi dào. Não mình dễ bị những câu văn chất ngoằng ngoèo của ông làm cho tê liệt, buông trôi để cho Gary muốn tung hứng ra sao thì ra, hoàn toàn yên tâm khi đang bay bổng vì ông luôn cho người đọc tiếp đất nhẹ nhàng và mãn nguyện. Có nhiều lão khác viết rất đểu, tung người đọc lên rồi không để họ được toàn thây hoặc cho họ bay mất hút mà không được trở về nơi ban đầu.

Mình đã vừa đọc vừa lật tấm hình của Gary ở đằng trước ra xem có thật không, có thật là ông được nuôi dạy bởi người mẹ tuyệt với đến thế không, đã trải qua những vết thương chiến tranh kinh khiếp mà vẫn giữ được lời hứa thuở bình minh ấy không. Và thật, cái nhướng mày để lộ đôi mắt to trong xanh lơ vẫn còn nguyên vẻ mơ mộng, cái bĩu môi nũng nịu vẫn còn như thể trước mặt ông vẫn là người mẹ đáng kính ấy. Cuốn sách với mình thật viên mãn, vì đến cuối cùng người mẹ đã mất trước khi thấy lời hứa của Gary được hoàn thành nguyên vẹn, và đến cuối ông chọn cách tự sát để kết thúc cơn khát của mình.

Như một hiệu ứng dây chuyền, mình cũng đã kịp tạo một lời hứa lúc đêm khuya giữa lúc má nện gối vào mình vì tội thức khuya: Má, con hứa với má, con sẽ không giết người đâu, dù con có sống bằng sách đi nữa :'(

Não é bom ser-se amado assim, tão novo, tão cedo. Criam-se maus hábitos. Julga-se que é possível encontrar outros semelhantes. Conta-se com isso. Procura-se, espera-se. Com o amor materno a vida faz-vos, no alvorecer, uma promessa que nunca vem cumprir-se.

Já li várias memórias sobre mães, umas mais deprimentes como “Uma Morte Suave” de Simone de Beauvoir e “Carta para Minha Mãe” de Georges Simenon, outras mais mirabolantes como “Nascido um Crime” de Trevor Noah e “Tu Não és Como as Outras Mães”, de Angelika Schrobsdorff, mas esta é a mais pungente, e a nível de homenagem a um progenitor só encontro equivalente em “Somos o Esquecimento que Seremos” de Héctor Abad Faciolince, que recomendo a toda a gente (que o encontre). Por “A Promessa” também meto as mãos no fogo e ando a adiar a recensão por cansaço e por receio de não lhe fazer justiça, mas aqui estou eu a vender o meu peixe: estas memórias lêem-se como a melhor ficção, com protagonistas maiores do que a vida e um sarcasmo muito adoçado com ternura, com as pequenas vergonhas que só uma mãe sabe proporcionar, com as pequenas conquistas que só uma mãe sabe aplaudir, com os pequenos empurrões que só uma mãe sabe dar. E um pai também, claro, mas aqui é uma relação de uma mãe solteira e de um filho único, logo com uma dinâmica e uma interdependência muito próprias. Nina, uma judia russa a viver em Vilnius quando Gary recorda os primeiros acontecimentos de infância que o encaminharam para ser o “happy end” da mãe, é o caso cabal de um progenitor que tenta realizar-se através do filho, que tenta superar todas as suas frustrações passadas depositando nele todos os seus sonhos de grandeza. Para que não lhe falte o bife diário, Nina revela-se uma mulher dos sete ofícios.

A minha mãe transformou um quarto em canil, abriu uma pensão para cães, gatos e aves, leu a sina, aceitou pensionistas, assumiu a gerência de um prédio, agiu como intermediária numa ou duas vendas de terrenos.

Incentiva-o a experimentar todas as artes e desportos em que ele possa brilhar, dando azo a episódios hilariantes em que o jovem Gary experimenta ser tenista, pintor, músico, actor e inclusive malabarista, até decidir aos 12 anos que é como escritor que singrará.

Suplicava-me, além do mais, que não me batesse em duelo, porque as mortes de Lermontov e de Puchkine foram para ela um eterno pesadelo. Como o meu génio literário lhe parecia tão grande como o deles, ela receava que eu viesse a ser o terceiro grande escritor morto em duelo.

É uma mãe que deposita nele uma fé sem limites e move mundos e fundos para emigrarem para França, o único país em que sabe que o seu Romantchik-Romucka pode vir ser um artista e um diplomata de sucesso.

Evidentemente, aos 55 anos é um pouco infantil acreditarmos em tudo o que a nossa mãe predisse acerca do nosso futuro, mas eu não consigo fugir a isso. Não consegui reconstruir o mundo, vencer a animalidade e o mal, restituir a dignidade e a justiça aos homens, mas consegui ganhar o torneio de pingue-pongue de Nice em 1932.

Apesar de todos os sacrifícios que faz por ele, é uma mãe exigente e severa, com um código de honra imperturbável.

- Olá. O camarada ainda se conserva entre nós? Julgávamos que já tivesse partido para França, onde o esperam tão impacientemente.
(...) O mas velho do grupo interveio:
- Lá não aceitam as velhas ‘cocottes’. (...)
Quando a minha mãe regressou a casa, fui ao seu encontro e contei-lhe tudo. (...)

Fingi não perceber, ter apenas 12 anos, esconder-me, mas compreendi muitíssimo bem.

É este jovem idealista que, quando estala a Segunda Guerra Mundial, se alista na Força Aérea com a intenção de deixar a sua mãe orgulhosa e sobreviver com glória.

Pensei em todas as batalhas que iria travar por ela, na promessa que tinha feito a mim mesmo, na alvorada da minha vida, de fazer-lhe justiça, de dar um sentido ao seu sacrifício e de regressar um dia ao lar.

Romain Gary haveria de sobreviver à guerra condecorado, apesar de ter sido ferido, e haveria de se tornar diplomata e um escritor famoso premiado por duas vezes com o Prix Goncourt, de se casar com a bela Jean Seberg, mas creio que a forma trágica como morreu teria dado um desgosto insuportável à sua mãe se nessa altura ainda fosse viva. E até na morte Nina fez as coisas à sua maneira.

Ainda considerava a vida como um género literário.

Helen’s face may have launched a thousand ships in the Iliad, but Roman Gary’s mother takes the prize for launching and totally shaping her son’s dramatic life. The successes of Gary’s career--a prize-winning novelist, an officer who was brave against the enemies of France in WW2, and a diplomat for the French government--were all worked out from early childhood through collusion with her ambitious fantasies for his fate. She outdoes the grip of McCourt’s mom his development in “Angela’s Ashes” and is more persistently indelible than Jeanette Wells’ mother in “The Glass Castle.” Yet here we get a prolonged testament of the beneficence of her love through his life, which puts it more in league with the positive testament of McBride’s “The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother.” The tradeoff for Gary comes in the discovery much later of not being able to achieve a comparable nurturing and inspiration through love relationships as a mature adult. You can’t help looking for the psychopathology in this bond, but more often I was swept along with the sentimental and heroic aspects of the story.

We start with him in his 40s, inexplicably on a beach in Big Sur, California, about 1960, where he dwells on his sense of isolation and seeking the womb-like balm he often gets from the sea. He can’t help recognizing the void in his life with the loss of his mother, Mina, during the war. From as early as he can remember, it was just her and him, starting with an early impoverished childhood in Vilnius (then part of the Soviet Union), his Jewish father having abandoned them. Her past as a minor actress in Moscow gives her the imagination for a better life for her son. She works her way up from menial jobs to a certain level of success running a consignment shop and then after a move to Warsaw the development of a store selling fake Paris fashions. The lure of France becomes big for both of them and soon her approach to bankruptcy after expensive treatments of Romain’s kidney disease leads them to gamble on a move to Nice. She makes enough, with a lot of sacrifice, to get him a Catholic education. It was painful for me to experience her working out her dreams of a brilliant future for him in one sphere after another, first in music, then in dance, and painting after that, in each case resulting in a thumb-down verdict by his teachers and tutors about any special talents. Finally, his reading of so much Romantic literature at an early age leads them to settle on writing, which for Mina is on the track toward a Nobel Prize in literature.

Romain develops the good habits of a writer but doesn’t exactly rise like a rocket. In the meantime, he goes off to law school out of secondary school, consistent with another dream they cook up for him to eventually become a French ambassador. The approach of war leads them next to pursue officers training school, which aligns with a state department ambition as well as serving their beloved new nation. Romain spends quite a bit of time defending this case of a mother and son living through and for each other as wholesome and not a reflection of various Freudian complexes. Yet is first experience of sex in his early teens with a charming housemaid leads her to a searing judgement:

”Mother or no mother, there will never be another woman to love you the way she does. That’s God’s honest truth”.
It was. But I didn’t know it then. It was only after my fortieth winter that I began to understand. It was wrong to have been loved so much so young, so early … you thus acquire a bad habit, the worst habit there is: the habit of being loved.
…You believe …that it will always be there around you,… that the world owes it to you, and you keep looking, thirsting, summoning, until you find yourself … with only your brother the ocean able to understand your heart. In your mother’s love, life makes you a promise at the dawn of life that it will never keep. …You will go hungry to the end of your days.

Despite this smothery theme, there was a lot of fun and vibrant life in Gary’s portrayal of scenes from his life along the way, rendered alternatingly in poignant or comic tones. His helping his mother to make income, his learning to deal with bullies at school, his inspiration from mentors of his mind and writing, and his dogged persistence in getting through the rigors and cruelty of aviation training school. Then his separation from home to go to war proudly in a bomber squadron, followed soon by abject despair and a sense of betrayal over France’s surrender to Hitler and then a succumbing to the call by de Gaulle in exile in England to flee and fight on, first in Morocco and then with the Allies from a base in England. Only 5 of 50 in his group of foreign exiles survived the war. He kept up his writing and published his first novel by the end of the war. After the war, in parallel to his work in the diplomatic corps, his writing of a range of novels earned him two Prix Concourt awards (Roots of Heaven, 1958; The Life Before Us, 1975—both of which were made into films). Gary’s use of humor makes his memoirs a special treat, ranging from slapstick and low humor on one end to refined self-mockery and satirical lashings of humans in general on the other.

Beyond the frame of this book, Gary got divorced from his first wife and soon married the talented and troubled actress Jean Seberg, with whom he had a son. He got involved in Hollywood scriptwriting (e.g. “The Longest Day” as well as adaptations of his own book). Wiki surprises me by informing me that Gary challenged Clint Eastwood to a duel for having an affair with his wife. She committed suicide in France in 1979 and he did so a year later, leaving a note that claimed a lack of connection to his choice. Success in his life I guess did not guarantee a durable happiness. His talent in telling a story well lives on.

Gary was enchanting as a man (a real 'poseur' as they say in French) and as a writer, and nothing can put you more under his spell than this autobiography. The novel is focussed on the impressive, but also suffocating figure of his mother, who sacrificed her life for him (getting her family out of Soviet-occupied Latvia and building up a new life in France). But she also continually drove him beyond the limit, at least that is what this book suggests.

The novel is a real gem, because of the layer of humour and the beautiful, lived-through storytelling. But the pedantic fringes, the exagerated worldly wisdoms and the egocentric focus of Gary regularly cause irritation. He can so overdo it that one can question his credibility. Anyway: I love his style so much (he writes the most melodic French), that I can forgive him his defaults.

I read this more or less alongside to Nabokov’s The Real Life of Sebastian Knight. There are some obvious parallels between the two writers, or may be the situation, since both were Russians who left soon after the 1917 revolution, where fifteen years apart (Gary was the younger) and who then wrote in the language of the country (countries) where they lived/nationalized. And in both books, we are presented with some sort of biographical account. Nabokov’s is a literary unveiling of the trappings of this genre, while Gary’s is presented at face value. There the similarities end.

Gary’s is a true-to-life memoir of his youth under the persistent guidance of an utterly devoted mother. The book is really an homage to her. She was unmarried and Gary provides just a little information about his father – married and with children on his side. This further supports the strength and determination of the woman, of Jewish origins. We follow Gary as they moved to Poland, first in Vilnius and then in Warsaw, until they can finally move to France, to the Provence coast. Gary grew under the hammering conviction that La France was the greatest of all countries – the model of civility for the rest of the world.

We are therefore far away from the world of cynical Nabokov. For a tenderness and unquestioned love permeates the pages of this book. Granted, this ever loving and admiring mother at times became oppressive to a male youth, embarrassing him in front of neighbours, or worse, in front of military companions, with the uncontrolled emanation of praise for her dear and incomparable son. But Gary never doubts the bottomless love from her mother, which does succeed in guiding him through his difficult life. She was indeed a promise at dawn for him.

One memorable aspect is that as Gary was choosing the paths in his life, he says that behind all his strivings to grow under and develop within one of the arts (and he had a hand in music, in painting, in dancing, until finally writing paved his way), there was always a moral goal. Behind his aesthetic longings there was always the ingrained belief that through art, or may be behind the art, there was the aspiration of a better and just world – a happier one. He was an idealist.

What surprised me and made me rethink about my earlier impression of his La vie devant soi A book that he published under a pseudonym, Émile Ajar, and which brought him a second Goncourt prize --in theory this prize can be given only once to a single author. It was not after his suicide and the note he left, that the identity behind the Ajar authorship was revealed , was that he exhibited the great masterly ability of being able to write in different voices. This is a fact, since he fooled the French literary circles during the fifteen years that separated the publication of the two works. And yet, now, reading this earlier work, I could identify the grounds for the filial love that infiltrates both books. Momo is a transliterated version of Romain himself.

This memoir also made me smile when the young Romain spends hours trying to find a ‘nom de plume’ even before he begins writing anything – pseudonyms and the fabrication of a personality was then from very early on ingrained in Gary’s being. In spite of the candid and warm tone of Romain Gary’s memories of his youth, the reader wonders how much of the account is projecting a wished-for personality and whether one is falling in a beguiling game.

So, after all, this takes us back to Nabokov and his meditation on the artificiality in the writing of biographies. If Nabokov presented the issue in a veiled intellectual manner, the issue is however brought to the fore. But with Romain Gary we are dealing with something else. The fabrication is veiled, disguised, and the reader walks away from this book with the question: "Who is behind the curtain?"

Atviras pasakojimas apie tai, kaip motinos meilė gali būti ir gyvenimo varikliu, ir kompleksų bei skausmingų nesėkmių šaltiniu.

Motina - keista, savotiška asmenybė, pasirinkusi dievinti savo vaiką ir paskyrusi visą savo gyvenimą jo šlovinimui, ugdymui, išlaikymui, atsities planų kūrimui. Ši moteris yra be galo stipri: ji grumiasi su gyvenimu, nepaisydama jokių aplinkybių (skurdo, sunkios ligos, pažeminimų, didžiulio vidinio skausmo). Tačiau šalia motiniškos meilės savo vaikui užkrauna ir vyrišką pareigą, kuri visą gyvenimą yra jam per sunkiai pakeliama: apginti motiną, atrasti gyvenime tiesą - pakylėti ją, išpildyti jos svajones. Šitai tampa ir sūnaus gyvenimo varikliu, ir didžiulių kompleksų šaltiniu. "Kai tau tai atsitiks dar kartą, kai dar kartą tau girdint bus įžeista tavo motina, norėčiau, kad namo tave pargabentų ant neštuvų. Supratai? Aš netekau amo. Jos veidas buvo visiškai neperprantamas, labai griežtas. Akyse nebuvo nė šlakelio užuojautos. Negalėjau patikėti, kad tai kalba mano motina. Kaip ji drįso? Sūnus, norėdamas atlyginti motinai už patirtą gyvenimo neteisybę, ryžtasi įgyvendinti visus jos planus. Šimtu procentų šoka pagal mamos dūdelę, net nesvarstydamas apie kitokias galimybes. Pasakojime pasigirsta ir kitoks tonas: nuovargis, noras išsilaisvinti ir atsikratyti sunkiasvorės motinos meilės. Kadangi pasakojama retrospektyviai, subrendusio žmogaus apžvelgiamas jo gyvenimas, patirtys ir jausmai. Atvirai atskleidžiami skausmingi, gal žmogui net gėdingi dalykai (juk autorius kalba apie savo gyvenimą!). Pasakojimas apima visus autoriaus gyvenimo etapus: nuo vaikystės iki brandos. Visuose juose girdimas drovaus, prie mamos prisirišusio mažo berniuko balsas. Labai vertinu žinomo ir gerbiamo žmogaus sprendimą taip atvirai kalbėti apie intymiausias savo sielos kerteles.

Citata, puikiai perteikianti autoriaus ir jo motinos santykį bei tokio santykio pasekmes: "Tik priėjęs ketvirtą dešimtį pradėjau tai suprasti. Negerai, kai tave taip myli labai jauną, taip anksti. Tada įgyji blogų įpročių. Manai, kad taip ir turi būti. Manai, kad tai kažin kur egzistuoja, kad gali tai surasti. Tikiesi. Ieškai, viliesi, lauki. Su motinos meile gyvenimas pačioj aušroj duoda tau pažadą, kurio neištesi. Paskui iki pat dienų galo esi priverstas valgyti šaltą maistą. Paskui kiekvienąsyk, kai moteris tave apglėbia, prispaudžia prie širdies, jauti, kad tai - tiktai užuojauta. Ir nuolat, staugdamas kaip benamis šuo, sugrįžti prie motinos kapo. This was not the first time I've read a memoir written by a man where the story revolves not only around himself, but also around his mother. I still remember reading Nicholas Gage's "Eleni" where I had the urge to go to Greece and visit the grave of Eleni, Mr. Gage's mother. Frank McCourt's mother wasn't dead yet at the end of "Angela's Ashes" but the story was well-crafted and she was so heroic there that I wasted no time finding out what happened later in "'Tis." In both "Eleni" and "Angela's Ashes" the power was in the stories themselves. Of course, both Messrs. Gage and McCourt are excellent writers and one can say that even the best plot, if narrated badly, ends up an insipid tale not worth telling. But "Promise at Dawn" may be an exception to this. I feel that even a less than sterling narration would not be able to mess up the great story that is in here. It has the tragedy of "Eleni," the humor of "Angela's Ashes," the pathos of both, and more. It has prophecy, the promise at dawn. Gary (real name Romain Kacew) and his mother were poor Russians. His father abandoned them immediately after Gary was born. He became his mother's reason for living and the sole meaning of all her painful struggles. Remember McCourt seeing his mother beg for food in "Angela's Ashes"? Here, Gary recalls having beefsteak during lunchtime when he was a young boy, his mother happily watching him while he eats. She says she can't eat the same because she's on a diet. One day, after he had eaten, he saw his mother hungrily eating her bread after wiping bits thereof upon the leftover sauce and oil of his beefsteak. He left her and wept.

His mother has high hopes for him and is sure he would be successful someday. Gary is only about 8 years old but she tells everyone that they will live in France; her son will become famous; he will be a French Ambassador, write books, win the Nobel Prize for literature and will have his suits made in London. This exuberant pride was a constant embarassment to the young Gary. Eerily, all these became true except the winning of the Nobel Prize (Gary did win, however, France's highest literary award, the Prix Goncourt, TWICE--the only person to do so).

And what great writing especially if, like myself, you read it in the original French!--

"Avec l'amour maternel, la vie vous fait a l'aube une promesse qu'elle ne tient jamais. On est oblige ensuite de manger froid jusqu'a la fin de ses jours. Apres cela, chaque fois qu'une femme vous prend dans ses bras et vous serre sur son coer, ce ne sont pllus que des condoleances. On revient toujours gueuler sur la tombe de sa mere comme un chien abandonne. Jamais plus, jamais plus, jamais plus. Des bras adorables se referment autour de votre cou et des levres tres douces vous parlent d'amour, mais vous etes au courant. Vous etes passe a la source tres tot et vous avez tout bu. Lorsque la soif vous reprend, vous avez beau vous jeter de tous cotes, il n'y a plus de puits, il n'y a que des mirages. Vous avez fait, des la premiere lueur de l'aube, une etude tres serree de l'amour et vous avez sur vous de la documentation. Partout ou vous allez, vous portez en vous le poison des comparaisons et vous passez votre temps a attendre ce que vous avez deja recu."

Too bad that after all his successes in life Mr. Gary shot himself to death on 2 December 1980, a year after his second wife, the beautiful actress Jean Seberg, had committed suicide. Ms Seberg was said to have been unfaithful, having affairs with other men like Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood, etc. This proved, once more, that even as a mother's love can bring a man to the gate of heaven, a wife's love can drag him back to the depths of hell.

Romain Gary benim geç kaldığım yazarlardan biri. Kendisiyle yolum ilk defa, yıllar önce”Onca Yoksulluk Varken” kitabıyla kesişti. Ancak herkesin çok sevdiği o kitap, benim çocuk anlatıcıyla barışamama yüzünden benim için hep sürüncemede kaldı, geriye 30-40 sayfa kalmasına rağmen asla sonunu getiremedim. Önyargılarım ve tekrar denemeye karar verdiğimde başka eserlerine geçmek yerine devam edemediğim kitabında ısrarcı oluşum bugüne kadar yazarla benim aramda karanlık bir boşluk kalmasına sebep oldu.

Sonunda yaşanması gereken o tanışma olabilecek en duygusal şekilde yaşandı. Şafakta Verilmiş Sözüm Vardı’da otobiyografi okuyacağımı biliyordum ancak bu kadar açık, filtresiz ve vurucu bir hikayeyi beklemiyordum. Kitap her ne kadar Romain Gary’nin otobiyografisi gibi okunsa da aslında bütün anıların baş karakteri annesi Nina Kacew. Hayatın her aşamasında elinden geleni yapıp yine de kaybeden tarafa savrulmuş bir annenin hayatta bütün amaçlarını ve gücünü oğlunu kazanan tarafa geçirebilme, Vilnius’ta yoksulluğun ve kaosun ortasına doğan oğlunu Fransız Büyükelçisi ve ödüllü bir yazar yapma hayallerinin ve bunun gerçeğe ulaşmasının hikayesi bir bakıma. Ancak böyle imkansız bir hayalin gerçeğe ulaştığını görmek kadar anne oğul arasındaki grotesk ilişkiyi ve bu ilişkiyi okudukça kanıksayıp yadırgamayı bıraktığınızı farketmeniz daha şaşırtıcı olabilir. ( Humor is an affirmation of dignity, a declaration of man’s superiority to all that befalls him.)” manifestosu çok etkili. Bu konuda bir genelleme yapmak asla doğru değil biliyorum ama bu kendimi durduracağım anlamına gelmiyor; travmalarla kırılıp parçalara ayrılmış hayatlarını bir arada tutmaya yeniden bütünlenmeye çalışanların ortak yolu olarak mizahın acıyı ve karanlığı yıkıcı etkisine sığınması bütün kitaba hakim. Bazen gülümseyerek okuduğunuz bir cümlenin gerçek hayattaki trajedisini üç saniye sonra idrak ediyorsunuz, gülümsemeniz yüzünüzde donup kalıyor ve “ nasıl bir acı bu” diye kalakalıyorsunuz. Bir bakıma hayatın kendisiyle oynadığı gibi, Romain Gary - hayatı boyunca yaptığı üzere- okuruyla oynuyor. Ayrıca kitabı okuduktan sonra “Şafakta Verilmiş Sözüm Vardı” cümleciği öyle bir tınlıyor ki içimde her seferinde gözlerim doluyor. Verdikleri sözleri tutmaları zamanın dönüşsüzlüğünden imkansıza düşmüş her insanın içinde kor gibi kalacaktır bu kitap.

This is a classic case of very pleasent reading rather than essential or transformative reading. I was more interested in this book more than I liked it.

I read this in an edition aimed at school children, which comes complete with additional materials, one of which is an essay on a portrait photograph of Romain Gary and his wife Jean Seberg taken in 1968.

The photograph illustrates my ambiguous feelings about the book. On the front cover we see a cropped version. Jean has her hands clasped on Romain's shoulder. It is true that both are looking in different directions, and are dressed in completely different styles. Still they appear close and her hands suggest a certain tenderness. However on the back cover there is the complete image. It is clear that he is sitting in front of her. Her legs are tucked in behind his, suggesting that she is using her body to keep him, not at arms length, but literally at thigh distance, now her hands on his shoulder look as though she is well positioned to push away from him and move further apart. His arms are folded. He looks closed off, isolated, dressed as though he wanted to impress fishermen. The more I looked, the more the picture suggested two lonely people who did not want to be in contact with each other. Of course that could be how the photographer staged the picture, still Seberg was an actress and Gary writrs of striking poses when photographers tooks pictures of him decending from his aeroplane after returning from a wartime mission.

So my reaction to the book is ambigious. It is a memoir, so at once it is intimate, but also calculated and posed. Gary decides what he tells us and how he presents it, and the more I looked at that photo- and since it was on the front and back covers I could not avoid it- the more I wondered about what he was not telling us, I tried to pay attention to the absences and the presentation of his stories.

He writes Elle aimait les jolies histoires, ma mere. Je lui en ai raconte beaucoup. (page 248) as we read, we are his mother, we like the pleasant stories, and he likes to tell them. Memoirs I reflect are a way of avoiding telling the truth, Gary does this with charm and a good deal of humour at his own expense, so this is pleasent reading, but I have the impressoon of being complicit in a magician's trick. The attention is diverted so they can change the cards.

The memoir feels very future orientated. The structure of Gary's life is determined by his mother's dreams for him. Literary sucess, studying law as a way into the diplomatic service, a period in the army, a certain degree of womanising - Gary's mother feels her son needs to be a bit of a Casanova and if he loves them and leaves them so much the better, if she can have pictures of the women that would be best of all. I could imagine her down the market in Nice, telling anyone who might listen what a beauty her boy had seduced and how he left her in tears, in this aspect of their relationship there was something of Miss Faversham and Estella of Great Expectations the child as the romantic weapon to avenge the older persons love injuries.

This future orientation creates a lacuna. Gary and his mother in this book have no roots, no family. His story begins in medias res - Gary showing us that his life is an epic, and indeed it was - the epic of the good migrant. As such they apparently come from nowhere and are always, at least potentially, in motion. They are Jewish, yet culturally Russian, though from early on presented in relation to France. For most of the first third of the book they ate living in Vilnus, then between the wars a part of Poland and 80% Jewish by population. Mother and son are already refugees at that point, why and how we never find out. Gary spends time trying to decide on a nom de plume, before writing a word of fiction as though he was Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole avant lettre.

In the second part; Gary and his mother have got themselves to Nice, leaving her servant (or confidante) back in Poland. Gary wins a gold medal in a Ping Pong competition, he keeps this medal with him, it put me in mind of Rosebud from the film Citizen Kane . His mother seems to have been fifty-five for quite a few of those years, she develops diabetes and spenfs as much on insulin as she does on cigarettes (or possibly the other way round) and seems to be sacrificing herself for thecsake of her son who gets to eat steak every day we never actually find out if he likes eating steak every day . Gary goes to Aix-en-Provence to study law and is naturalised as French. This is another lacuna. Many people have stories to tell about their university days - but not Gary. He tells us a lot about what happened to him when he was eight but virtually nothing about his life around the age of twenty.

The third part covers his life during WWII. He spends a lot of time trying to get back into the fight after the fall of France, this is not straight forward, eventually he manages to join up with the Free French in Britain, on campaign in Africa he is hospitalised for a long time. He gets letters from his mother via Switzerland and worries about her access to insulin. He describes a combat mission in which his aeroplane is hit. The pilot's eyes are injured, I think he lost 75% of his sight, Gary was the navigator and was also injured, he talks the pilot through the flight back. The bomber was unhurt which was good for him. Gary gets a medal for this, the incident haunts him, he tells us how the pilot remained in service and died in 1955 in a flying accident. I felt the ear didn't end for Gary, it stayed with him, before thecwar finishes he wrote a european education. At the beginning of thevwat he was a low ranking airman, who had been passed over for officer rank because he had only been relatively recently naturalised, by thecend of the war, he had made a name for gimself as a combatant, but again it was not clear how, presumably not on acvount of wandering to Britain from Bordeaux via North Africa and Gibraltar, neither for fighting a duel in a London hotel with a Polish officer, nor for spending a long time in hospital in Africa. He mentions several time his umbilical connection with his mother. As it happened I saw an exhibition of the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, the saddest art work I've so far seen, at one pont she mentioned hiw her own mother had consumed her, and how in turn she had consumed her own children. That was my experience of this this book too, that Gary's mother had consumed his life, his life was to be compensation for her's, revenge perhaps for what she could not be as a woman, as a single mother, as a refugee. Gary seems both to accept this, and to be deeply melancholy. He clings to that medal for ping pong as though the joy for him was in tryingvto fulfil his mother's dreams, once he had done so maybe he tealised that they were never his.

I resd this in French, and was aronished to find the first chapter understandable, afterwards it grew harder, but not terribly so, possibly because French was not Gary's native language. So I recommend this to fellow learners. Particularly as Gary between heartache and laughter from page to page. It is very endearing- I can imagine that a well researched biography might reveal that much of this book is misrepresentation, but that is his prerogative in telling his own story.

Nhiều người nhận xét tôi theo chủ nghĩa cầu toàn. Không thể phủ nhận, dù khiếm khuyết lỗ chỗ đầy mình. Tôi vừa ăn xong quả táo xanh, trước đó phải loay hoay tìm đạo cụ phù hợp để bữa bổ sung vitamin này thêm màu (mè). Tôi sẽ thấy ngon miệng hơn nếu được ăn cơm với một đôi đũa gỗ đầu nhỏ.

Và như thế tự tôi sẽ thấy thiếu sót vô chừng nếu bài viết này không đạt đến những câu từ đẹp chân thành nhất có thể dành cho quyển sách đẹp vô ngần với bìa minh họa đẹp như tranh vẽ - Lời hứa lúc bình minh!

Tôi thả mình cùng quyển sách với tâm trạng nâng niu và để dành vào những ngày cuối đông Nha Trang se lạnh, sau hơn bảy tháng mua được và lâu hơn thế nữa kể từ lần đầu tiên thấy trên tiệm sách Kafka. Tôi để lại sau chót và đọc nhín. Như tôi luôn dành những món ngon nhất trong khẩu phần ăn vào những miếng cuối cùng, để dư vị đọng lại nơi đầu lưỡi. Nơi đuôi mắt. Nếu đọc quyển sách rồi, hoặc nếu được lớn lên trong tình yêu của mẹ, bạn sẽ ít nhiều không cười khẩy thấy tôi quá thận trọng khi đọc Lời hứa hay khi viết những dòng này.

Như mọi dạng thức của tình yêu, tình mẫu tử cũng không có một định nghĩa khuôn mẫu nhất định nào. Một đứa con hiếu thảo, yêu mẹ, dĩ nhiên. Một đứa con sẽ luôn làm hài lòng mẹ, dĩ nhiên, nếu tương lai rạng rỡ theo một kế hoạch được vạch sẵn. Nhưng một đứa con lờ đi những nguyện vọng của mẹ để theo đuổi những đam mê hoài bão riêng, một đứa con bất hiếu thì sao? Không ai hiểu lòng người đủ sâu để trả lời nan đề này!

Người ta thường dùng lối viết đối lập trên để khéo léo dẫn tới điều mình muốn đề cập là dị thường nhưng chấp nhận được. Còn tôi, chỉ để nhấn mạnh, Romain Gary và mẹ ông là điển hình của cặp mẹ con yêu nhau bằng một tình cảm truyền thống: Mẹ đặt vào ông niềm hy vọng trọn vẹn và ông đã hiếu thảo với mẹ bằng tất thảy những gì một người đàn ông Pháp bản lĩnh nhất cần-nên-phải làm, từ khi tuổi chưa lên mười.

Thực hiện lời hứa lúc bình minh! Của cuộc đời!

Thử ví tình cảm truyền thống hiện hữu giữa Romain và mẹ như nhịp tim liền mạch biểu hiện sự sống, sẽ rõ hơn nếu nhìn vào điện tâm đồ, tôi thấy dòng điện tim ấy biến thiên theo cuộc đời gập ghềnh của hai mẹ con Romain.

Có khi, mẹ yêu Romain bởi một tình yêu cổ hủ mà bất cứ đứa con nào trên thế gian này cũng ít nhất một lần trong đời cảm thấy xấu hổ, mắc cỡ, quê độ, đỏ bừng mặt, hơi nóng bốc lên từ tai tới đỉnh đầu, muốn chạy trối chết, muốn chui xuống đất, muốn bay hơi, muốn lắc đầu như trống bỏi và rồi thốt lên, a ha ha, bà ấy không phải mẹ tôi, không phải đâu. Góc độ cổ hủ này xuất phát từ cái nhìn của đứa con - Romain hay là tôi - thì tình mẹ đôi khi thật tiêu cực, nhưng đổi lại từ mẹ thì đó là: Cả thế giới có thể xấu hổ, nhưng mẹ thì không.

Tình yêu ấy có lúc đạt đến đỉnh điểm của tình mẫu tử cực đoan. Romain dễ thường hờn ghét mẹ đến muốn thoát khỏi vòng tình yêu của bà, không phải đợi đến năm năm sau, khi ông mười bảy tuổi và muốn tìm người bầu bạn cho mẹ trong phần đời còn lại để không phải chối từ cuộc sống đàn ông, mà là khi hành nghề tát thuê (bởi mẹ) lâu dài và xuất sắc, khi bị ăn liên tiếp mấy cái tát (từ mẹ), khi được (hay bị mẹ) mạnh mẽ yêu cầu phải bảo vệ bà dẫu có bằng tính mạng. Vì người khác xúc phạm nhân cách của bà.

Chẳng khi nào tình yêu của mẹ Romain là một dòng điện tim thẳng đơ, càng không đứt nhịp. Cổ hủ, cực đoan cũng chưa đủ để nói về bà mẹ đặc biệt này.

Như những cực điện đặt ở tay, chân và ngực sẽ cho thấy những bệnh về tim trên điện tâm đồ, bà luôn gửi gắm vào cậu con trai một tình yêu ngây thơ bằng vô số những nguyện vọng, mà từ bệ phóng đó Romain gặt hái được nhiều thành công gần đúng như tiên đoán của mẹ: đoạt Huân chương Bắc đẩu Bội tinh, trở thành Tổng lãnh sự Pháp, hai lần đoạt giải Goncourt. Bằng niềm tin vững chắc của mẹ, Romain đã biến một bà mẹ ngây thơ trong mắt hàng xóm thành bà mẹ có khả năng tiên đoán số phận. Không. Mẹ ông không phải nhà tiên tri. Mẹ cùng với những cực điện niềm tin của bà đã giúp Romain loại bỏ dần những căn bệnh thiên hướng lệch lạc, nhầm nhọt và gắng gượng nào hội họa âm nhạc, nào ca kịch điện ảnh để thấy được thiên hướng chân chính của ông: Văn chương.

Như đã nói, không ai hiểu lòng người đủ sâu để nhận định thế nào là một đứa con có hiếu hay bất hiếu. Cũng vậy, không ai đủ thông thái (nhân dịp vừa đọc xong Thông thái và số phận) để nhận xét tình yêu của một người mẹ trao con là đúng hay sai, nhiều hay ít, tích cực hay tiêu cực. Không, nên tôi sai rồi.

Thật ra ví tình yêu của Romain và mẹ với nhịp tim chỉ đúng khi bà còn ở đó, sống, yêu ông với một tình yêu cổ hủ, ngây thơ và cực đoan. Nhưng là sai, sai một cách đui mù, vì tình yêu ấy còn đập những nhịp chậm rãi, ổn định, dai dẳng mà không máy đo điện tâm đồ nào đủ nhạy có thể hiển hiện cho tôi thấy.

Vậy hãy bỏ qua các loại máy móc, tôi thử chiếu ánh sáng tình yêu này lên vùng quang phổ. Nó có đủ các sắc tố đỏ, cam, vàng, lục, lam, chàm, tím. Chúng hội tụ và biến thiên liên tục tạo nên một ánh sáng trắng tinh khiết, lung linh, rạng rỡ - ánh nắng. Và dẫu có lúc nào đó ánh nắng tình yêu ấy không còn đủ sáng để soi rọi đường đi cho Romain thì cũng sẽ có ánh trăng tỏ tường nước bước cho ông. Vũ trụ này không ngày thì đêm, không mặt trời thì mặt trăng, không ánh nắng thì ánh trăng - vĩnh cửu như tình yêu của mẹ dành cho Romain, và ngược lại.

Tôi đã chảy hết mức có thể suối ngôn từ cạn khô của mình để thể hiện tôi yêu Lời hứa đến nhường nào...

Khi đứng trước cái đẹp, chúng ta khả dĩ (nhân tiện, Romain sử dụng từ này nhiều đến nỗi tôi những muốn gọi ông là Ngài Khả Dĩ) sững sờ không thốt nên lời hoặc lắp bắp không thành câu. Như thế, tôi thuộc trường hợp thứ hai (tôi nói nhiều cỡ chừng này từ cơ mà). Quá ư ôm đồm, tôi không tập trung thể hiện được cái đẹp chân thành muốn bài viết đạt tới. Giống như tôi không tìm được cách nào tinh tế hơn để khen ngợi bìa sách, ngoài bảo đẹp như tranh vẽ, mà thật thì nó chính là từ tác phẩm The Three Ages of Woman của danh họa Gustav Klimt.

Ôi, có sao chăng nữa, xin những con người làm nên Lời hứa hãy đừng chê bôi!

Như Bị thiêu sống, Ba ơi mình đi đâu? là những tự truyện tôi đã đọc, Lời hứa cũng đã hay bởi chính cuộc đời thật trong nó. Nhưng hơn thế nữa, tác giả kể về cuộc đời ông, cuộc đời mẹ, tình yêu của ông và mẹ bằng một văn phong dung dị, dí dỏm mà thông minh, không như vẻ văn chương mỹ lệ từng thấy trong Biển. Biển của John Banville là cái đẹp của văn chương được vẽ bằng một hạt đời buồn, còn Lời hứa của Romain Gary là một cuộc đời đẹp được dệt thêu bởi sợi tơ văn chương.

Có lúc tôi tí nữa thì phun mưa lên trang sách khi ông so sánh mẹ trông ông ăn với niềm hớn hở như chó cho con bú. Có lúc tôi xúc động rớm nước mắt khi Romain kể về lần đầu tiên phát hiện ra mẹ ăn vụng mỡ trong chảo chiên beefsteak. Rồi tôi đã phục sát đất với một Romain láu cá khi bịa ra lý do vì sao ông không được phong sĩ quan với lon thiếu úy: quyến rũ vợ chỉ huy Trường - một tấm khiên che chắn quá sức tốt vì còn kiêm nhiệm vụ đánh chuẩn vào tâm lý của mẹ. (Bà luôn luôn, luôn luôn muốn ông có một người phụ nữ trong đời.) Rồi thì tôi không khỏi bùi ngùi đến sụt sịt khi lờ mờ nhận ra sự thật đằng sau những bức thư không đầu không đuôi, kiệm lời và vô đề của mẹ Romain.

Tự thân cuộc đời trong Lời hứa với bút pháp kể chuyện không thể bình thường hơn nhưng đầy cá tính đã đủ hay để lôi cuốn độc giả. Romain còn thổi vào đó một trí nhớ, mà với tôi là siêu phàm. Không. Hẳn người lính nào cũng sẽ như ông, ba tôi cũng thế đó, nhớ tên từng đồng đội, từng trận chiến, những ai đã hy sinh và ở đâu, những ai còn sống và bị thương chỗ nào... Cùng là tập hợp một lô lốc những danh tính tôi không định nhớ tên như trong Ở quán cà phê của tuổi trẻ lạc lối nhưng những trang sách của Patrick Modiano khiến tôi cảm giác như đang bị ông dắt đi trong mê cung phố phường đất Pháp, còn của Romain Gary lại gợi lên trong tôi một tình cảm tạp chủng - về màu da, sắc tộc, biên giới - mà bền chắc: Tình đồng đội.

Sara Imas đã nói thế này trong Vô cùng tàn nhẫn, vô cùng yêu thương: “... chỉ có một tình yêu luôn hướng đến sự phân ly là tình yêu cha mẹ dành cho con cái.”

Cho đến tuổi thiếu niên, Romain đã được nuôi dạy cực khắt khe, bài bản, quy củ trong vòng tình yêu rất Pháp của mẹ. Đã không có gì để tôi kéo dài bài viết tới những dòng (gần) cuối cùng này, nếu ông không thoát ly khỏi mẹ để nhập ngũ, trở thành một người lính chiến đấu và đổ máu cùng đồng đội. Tôi đã dừng lại ở đoạn trên, nếu tình yêu của mẹ và Romain chỉ gói gọn trong phạm vi hai người, nếu tình yêu ấy không nhóm lên trong Romain ngọn lửa chiến đấu hừng hực trong thời chiến và âm ỉ tàn lửa tưởng nhớ trong thời bình.

Đã nên dừng gõ phím lâu rồi, nếu sự thật về mẹ đến với Romain kịp thời chứ không phải muộn ba năm!

Đã nên chào tạm biệt sớm rồi những con người làm nên Lời hứa, nếu sợi dây rốn tình mẹ đứt phựt ngay như lúc sau sinh!

Mẹ Romain, một bà mẹ vĩ đại đặc biệt! Romain, một cậu con trai yêu mẹ bằng tình yêu của tất cả những đứa con trên đời cộng lại cốt để đặt cả thế giới dưới chân mẹ.

Vậy là tôi đã ở đây, những dòng cuối cùng của bài viết. Một bao tải cảm xúc lan man được rải tràng giang đại hải bên trên thế mà không biết nói gì lúc này. Tôi xin mượn trăn trở của mình, một cảm xúc ngoài lề quyển sách.

Ứ có gì bất ngờ khi ngòi bút dí dỏm và thông minh từng ẩn mình dưới bút danh Émile Ajar lựa chọn dây rốn để biểu tượng hóa tình mẫu tử thiêng liêng. Nhưng quả muốn cật vấn ông: Tại sao bỏ qua sợi dây rốn tình mẹ bền chắc ấy để tự tử? Đã từng hóa thân là mẹ trong cùng ngôi kể ở phần cuối sách cơ mà, bà sẽ không chọn lựa như thế đâu, dẫu có vì nguyên cớ gì.

Ông đã thực hiện lời hứa lúc bình minh nhưng lại dành một dấu chấm lửng không mấy duyên dáng cho lúc hoàng hôn...

Δεύτερο βιβλίο του Romain Gary που διαβάζω, μετά από τη Ζωή μπροστά σου και για άλλη μια φορά διέπεται από μια υπέρμετρη κομψότητα, κομψότητα στη γραφή που πηγάζει από μια κομψότητα του πνεύματος αυτού του συγγραφέα.

Ο Romain Gary είναι ο μόνος Γάλλος συγγραφέας που του απονεμήθηκε δύο φορές το βραβείο Goncourt: η πρώτη φορά για το «Les Racines du ciel» (Οι ρίζες του ουρανού) και η δεύτερη για το «La vie devant soi» (Η ζωή μπροστά σου) που όμως έγραψε κάτω από το ψευδώνυμο Emile Ajar.

«Η υπόσχεση της αυγής» είναι ένα αυτοβιογραφικό βιβλίο, γεμάτο από εξομολογήσεις και αφηγήσεις γύρω από την ιδιαίτερη σχέση που είχε ο ίδιος με τη μητέρα του, από την παιδική του ηλικία έως τη ζωή του ως ενήλικα. Μια μάνα που μεγάλωσε τον γιο της μόνη, με μια γιγαντιαία φτερούγα που είχε έγνοια πάντα ο γιος της να είναι από κάτω, με μια δύναμη που δε συναντάς εύκολα αλλά και μια έντονη, σχεδόν αδιανόητη παρεμβατικότητα και ένα βαρίδιο γεμάτο υψηλές προσδοκίες για τον μοναχογιό της στον οποίο δεν έπαψε να πιστεύει ποτέ μέχρι το τέλος. Η υπόσχεση της αυγής όμως εκπληρώθηκε. Γιατί ο αδιόρατος ομφάλιος λώρος συντηρήθηκε μέχρι τέλους με μια φροντίδα λεπτομερή, υπερβολική, ξεροκέφαλη και παρούσα ακόμα κι από μίλια μακριά, ακόμα και μετά τον θάνατο. Ο Gary συντάχθηκε στις γαλλικές αεροπορικές δυνάμεις στο πλευρό του στρατηγού de Gaulle κατά τον 2ο ΠΠ και τιμήθηκε ως Compagnon de la Libération (σπάνιος τιμητικός τίτλος) και ως ιππότης του τάγματος της Λεγεώνας της Τιμής.

Ήταν ένας άνθρωπος που αναζητούσε το αριστούργημα, κοιτούσε προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση, πάντα αρματωμένος με μια ελπίδα ακόμα κι εκεί που δεν υπήρχε στον ορίζοντα. Έκανε ζογκλερικά με έξι μπάλες προσπαθώντας πάντα να χώσει μια έβδομη στο παιχνίδι, αλλά πάντα αυτή του ξέφευγε, τον πετούσε έξω από την προοπτική μιας τελειότητας. Δεν εκπλήσσομαι πια σήμερα που συνέβη στον Παγκανίνι να πετάξει το βιολί του και να μην το αγγίξει ξανά για χρόνια, να κείται εκεί, με το βλέμμα άδειο. Δεν εκπλήσσομαι, γ ν ώ ρ ι ζ ε.

Όταν βλέπω τον Μαλρώ, τον μεγαλύτερο όλων μας, να κάνει ζογκλερικά με τις μπάλες του, όπως λίγοι άνθρωποι το έκαναν ��ριν από αυτόν, η καρδιά μου σφίγγεται μπροστά στην τραγωδία του, αυτή που είναι χαραγμένη στο πρόσωπό του, εν τω μέσω των πιο λαμπρών ανδραγαθημάτων του: η τελευταία μπάλα είναι έξω απ’την εμβέλειά του, και όλο του το έργο είναι φτιαγμένο με αυτήν την αγωνιώδη βεβαιότητα.»
 
Η μητέρα του, εμβληματική μορφή στη ζωή του που είχε πάρει προσωπικά την επιτυχία και το μέλλον του γιου της, παίρνει άλλες φορές τη μορφή μιας πνιγηρής παρουσίας και άλλες ενός φύλακα-άγγελου που όλοι θα ζηλεύαμε. Επικρατέστερο για τον αναγνώστη μάλλον το πρώτο, για τον Gary μάλλον το δεύτερο. Σπεύδει ωστόσο νωρίς νωρίς να περιπαίξει τις ψυχαναλυτικές σχολές της μόδας. Σε πείσμα των υποψιασμένων που χαμογελούν κρυφά εγγυώμενοι για το τετελεσμένο του Οιδιπόδειου συμπλέγματος, δηλώνει ως γιος «παρά-φύση»∙ δεν είχε ποτέ αιμομικτική έλξη προς τη μητέρα του.

«Λίγα λεπτά αργότερα, άκουγα τη φωνή της μητέρας μου στο τηλέφωνο. Είμαι ανίκανος να μεταφέρω εδώ αυτά που είπαμε μεταξύ μας. Ήταν μια σειρά κραυγών, λέξεων, λυγμών, δεν μπορούν να περιγραφούν από μια έναρθρη γλώσσα. Έχω από τότε την εντύπωση πως καταλαβαίνω τα ζώα. Όταν, μέσα στην αφρικανική νύχτα, άκουγα φωνές ζώων, συχνά η καρδιά μου σφιγγόταν όταν αναγνώριζα σ’αυτές τον πόνο, τον τρόμο, το σκίσιμο και, από εκείνο το τηλεφώνημα, σε όλα τα δάση του κόσμου, ήξερα πάντα να αναγνωρίσω τη φωνή του θηλυκού που έχασε το μικρό του.»

Η Υπόσχεση της Αυγής είναι για μένα άλλη μια επιβεβαίωση για τη μεστότητα και την ομορφιά της γραφής του Gary. Οι σκέψεις του κυλούν ανεμπόδιστα, η διάνοιά του είναι καταφανής, τα κείμενά του στέκονται περήφανα ανάμεσα σε αυτά των σπουδαίων Γάλλων της εποχής του.

Υπόσχεση πως θα συνεχίζω να τον διαβάζω.

اشناییم با رومن گاری با "لیدی ال " شروع شد و با بقیه اثارش "خداحافظ گری کوپر"، "مجموعه داستان قلابی"،"زندگی در پیش رو"و...ادامه پیدا کرد.خوندن معرفی های دو صفحه ای اول کتابها ،خودکشیش، اسامی مستعار متعددش،سمت هاش و جوایز مختلف نویسندگی و حتی ازدواج با جین سیبرگ ستاره ی سینما، رومن گاری رو برام تبدیل به شخصیتی جالب کرده بود به خاطر همین خوندن زندگی نامه نویسنده به قلم خودش واقعن منو به وجد اورد.تعریف روزهای پر از بدبختی دوران کودکی و جوانی که با چاشنی طنز امیخته شده بودو یاداوری و مقایسه شون با روزهای بعدی نویسنده ی شهیر جالب بود.

البته کتاب برای من به دو بخش تقسیم شد.قبل از جنگ که روند داستان خوب و جذاب بود و بعد از جنگ که افتضاح شد.معرفی شخصیت ها و اسم های زیاد و تعریف داستان های بی ربط ،طی دوران جنگ باعث شد از این به بعد کتاب رو سرسری بخونم و رد شم ولی شیرینی قسمت اول کتاب هنوز هم با منه

من مرده ی شخصیت مادر رومن گاری بودم. زنی اصالتا روسی و فوق العاده سخت کوش با ارزوهای دور و دراز برای پسرش که به هر اب و اتشی زد ! مهمترین خصیصه جذاب این زن به نظر من باور و ایمان فوق العادش به عملی شدن ارزوهاش بود..به این که هرچند این روزها دوره ی فقر و نداری و بدبختیشونه ولی بدون شک پسرش به جایگاه بالایی تو فرانسه خواهد رسید.و این طور هم شد یه چیزی تو مایه های قانون جذب و این حرفا

Tra cielo e terra

Caro Romain,
lo confesso, mentre leggevo questo tuo libro, che non sapevo essere una autobiografia parziale, ti pensavo un po' guascone, - un po' sborone come diciamo noi a Roma - un po' viziato e perché no, anche molto cocco di mamma.
Però quella mamma ingombrante e sicura di te è stata anche il tuo faro e tu sei stato il suo, e quella luce e quell'amore illumina tutte le quasi quattrocento pagine di questo libro, attraversandole con la stessa forza e lo stesso ardore con cui avete attraversato la Lituania e la Polonia per poi approdare in Francia, la tua Patria, la vostra terra promessa, con lo stesso spirito indomabile con cui hai combattuto la seconda guerra mondiale, con quel coraggio e con quella modestia con cui ti schernisci di fronte alla crocetta verde della Legione d'onore che portavi appuntata sulla divisa.

Mi hai fatta sorridere caro Romain, mi hai fatto comprendere quanto amavi la vita, come non ti sottomettessi mai a niente e a nessuno, nemmeno quando la vita stessa ti si rivoltava contro e i tre beffardi spiriti, Tatouche il dio della stupidità, Merzavka il dio delle certezze assolute, Filoche il dio della meschinità, ti si ponevano sul cammino.
Scrivevi, ricordando quei tempi di guerra, «Mentre stavo nuotando, per la prima volta mi venne l'idea del suicidio. Ma la mia non è una natura sottomessa, e la mia guancia sinistra non è a disposizione di nessuno», ma allora cos'è successo molti anni più tardi da indurti a cambiare idea?

Ma questa, quella avvenuta molti anni più tardi, è un'altra storia, quella della promessa dell'alba invece è la storia di un amore così grande, quello tra un piccolo bambino lituano e la sua mamma, una donna sola ma determinata che lo vuole e lo sente predestinato a fare grandi cose nella vita: essere un artista e diventare ambasciatore francese, un piccolo bambino destinato ad essere un grande uomo, solo perché la sua mamma ha deciso che lo sarà.

Mi sono divertita, ho trepidato con te, ogni tanto mi sono anche sentita un po' presa in giro da quella tua sbruffonaggine da sigaro in bocca e giacca di cuoio, ma anche io mi sono fatta incantare da quegli occhi azzurri e da quell'aria un po' da sognatore alla Saint-Exupery, quegli occhi che la tua mamma amava tanto guardare.

Sarà per questo che allora, all'ultima pagina, mi lasci qui con le lacrime che scivolano silenziose sulle mie guance; perché eri un'anima bella e sapere che alla fine non ce l'hai fatta mi lascia una grande tristezza nel cuore.



Vorrei essere anche io sulla spiaggia di Big Sur adesso, e poter dire come te «Ecco. Presto bisognerà che lasci la spiaggia, dove ormai da tanto tempo sto sdraiato ad ascoltare il mare. Ci sarà un po' di nebbia stasera, su Big Sur, e farà fresco e io non ho mai imparato ad accendere il fuoco e a riscaldarmi. Ma voglio tentare di restare ancora un poco, ad ascoltare, perché ho sempre l'impressione di essere sul punto di capire ciò che l'Oceano mi dice. Chiudo gli occhi, sorrido, ascolto... Ho ancora di queste curiosità. Più la spiaggia è deserta e più mi sembra popolata. Le foche si sono zittite, sulle rocce, e io resto là, gli occhi chiusi, sorridendo, e immagino che una di loro mi si avvicini dolcemente e di sentire all'improvviso contro la mia guancia, o nella piega della spalla un muso affettuoso... Ho vissuto.»
E poi guardarti negli occhi e dirti che la tua mamma era orgogliosa di te, già da molto tempo prima.

Como assim, não posso dar mais do que 5 estrelas?!

Como é que alguém consegue escrever desta maneira ao longo de 400 páginas?

Quando não estava com um sorriso nos lábios à conta do humor subtilíssimo ou da ironia elegante, ficava enternecida com o amor dele pela mãe - e com o dela por ele - ou emocionada com os episódios da vida difícil de dois expatriados - uma mãe solteira com ambições desmedidas para o seu filho único, que parece ter escapado à morte umas tantas vezes por intervenção "divina" - ou seja, da mãe que o acompanhou sempre, mesmo quando se encontrava fisicamente muito distante.

Parece impossível que o autor tenha realmente vivido tantas aventuras e sobrevivido a tantos desastres, mas as inúmeras referências a situações e personagens reais, incluindo colegas aviadores, farão certamente prova do que nos conta nestas maravilhosas memórias. De qualquer modo, se é assim que ele recorda a sua vida, quem somos nós para o contrariar?

Este foi direitinho para a prateleira dos favoritos, onde se juntou ao outro livro do mesmo autor Uma Vida à Sua Frente.

Não sei se chego ao final do ano sem pegar n' As Raízes do Céu...

What do you mean I cannot give this more than 5 stars?!

How can someone write like this for 400 pages?

When I wasn't smiling on the account of the very subtle humour or the very elegant irony, I was touched by his love for his mother - and by her love for him - or moved by the scenes of the hard life of two expats - a single mom with disproportionate ambitions for her only son, who seems to have escaped death an uncanny amount of times by "divine" intervention - or because of the constant presence of his mother, even when she was very far away.

It seems impossible for the author to have lived so many adventures and survived so many accidents, but the numerous references to real situations and people, including his fellow airmen, should be proof enough of what he tells us in these wonderful memories. And, in the end, if that was how he recalled his life, who are we to say otherwise?

This one went straight to the "favorites" shelf, joining his other book The Life Before Us.

I think I won't be able to keep my hands off The Roots of Heaven until the end of the year...

Tutto è iniziato con un brano che nell’edizione del libro che lessi cinque anni fa non compariva

Con l’amore materno la vita ci fa all’alba una promessa che non manterrà mai. In seguito si è costretti a mangiare gli avanzi, fino alla fine. Ogni volta che una donna ci prende tra le braccia e ci stringe al cuore, si tratta solo di condoglianze. Si ritorna sempre a guaire sulla tomba della propria madre come un cane abbandonato. Mai più, mai più, mai più. Braccia adorabili si chiudono intorno al nostro collo e labbra dolcissime ci parlano d’amore, ma noi sappiamo già tutto. Noi siamo stati alla sorgente troppo presto e abbiamo bevuto tutto. Quando ci riprende la sete, si ha un bel cercare da ogni parte: non ci sono più pozzi, soltanto miraggi. Abbiamo fatto, alla prima luce dell’alba, uno studio approfondito dell’amore e ci siamo documentati troppo bene. Dovunque andremo, porteremo con noi il veleno dei confronti; e passiamo il tempo aspettando ciò che abbiamo già avuto.

Vorrei essere il figlio che l’ha scritto. Non basta la quarantina, occorre che la sorgente si sia seccata, che il posto nel mondo dove la nostra sete poteva essere placata non vi sia più, che ne resti solo il ricordo. Trovai la citazione in rete, ripassai il mio libro da cima a fondo ma non ve n’era traccia. Per me è una delle cose più belle che siano state scritte, è poesia in prosa.

Trovato il brano in rilettura mi è subentrata la sindrome da missione compiuta, in realtà sapevo di averne una più importante da intraprendere (riconciliarmi con Gary) e che per farlo non mi sarei potuto fermare dopo cinquanta pagine. La mia prima impressione (copio in calce il commento di allora) risentì sicuramente anche della traduzione.

Che capacità, che mescolanza di poesia, ironia e sentimento. Per forza un giorno si mise a scrivere fingendosi qualcun altro, non gli era sufficiente una sola personalità per esprimere tutte le sue potenzialità. Avevo un bel dire da monolite, in merito alla franchezza di quest’uomo tormentato, di cui anche in questa autobiografia non si capisce dove finisca lui ed inizi il personaggio letterario, chi dei due sia stato modellato sui destini dell’altro. Gary era un russo che scriveva in francese, io voglio ringraziare Marcello Venturi per come lo ha tradotto perché questo è un altro libro rispetto a quello che lessi cinque anni fa e contemporaneamente sono io ad essere un altro; più vecchio, più portato a pensare che un uomo fa del suo meglio con gli anni che gli sono concessi in sorte ed è scusabile e forse perfino apprezzabile che presentando il suo biglietto ormai scaduto, ne falsifichi un altro per aver l’illusione di poter iniziare tutto da capo. Ci vogliano fantasia e coraggio per decidere di ripartire, sarà che a me mancavano entrambi e perciò disprezzai la doppia identità di Gary. Il fatto è che quella fantasia e quel coraggio erano il suo tentativo estremo di vincere la morte. Tuttavia essa ebbe la meglio e a Gary bastò un solo colpo per uccidere sé stesso ed Emile Ajar.

In questa autobiografia è visibile la stratificazione di Gary: sulla sua anima ingenua sono installate le versioni adulte di soldato e uomo politico. Il risultato è sorprendente perché sotto l’ironia si aprono zone commoventi di candore alla vista delle quali il lettore si sente disarmato. Il dolore in Gary non è adulto è infantile, pertanto ancora più compassionevole. Io trovo talune sue formulazioni irripetibili, un misto di cuore, pateticità e arguzia.

Scelgo un passaggio di questa mia rilettura (ne ho sottolineati parecchi) perché ha a che vedere con ciò che anche in Biglietto Scaduto avevo apprezzato maggiormente

Istintivamente, senza un’apparente influenza letteraria, scoprii l’umorismo, questo modo abile e assolutamente piacevole di disarmare la realtà nel momento stesso in cui sta per cadervi addosso. L’umorismo è stato per me, durante tutta la vita, un fraterno compagno; devo a lui i miei unici veri istanti di vittoria sulle avversità. Nessuno è riuscito a togliermi quest’arma, e io la rivolgo tanto più volentieri contro me stesso, in quanto colpendo me, colpisco tutti. L’umorismo è un’affermazione di dignità, un’affermazione della superiorità dell’uomo su ciò che gli può capitare.

Non lo salvò neppure quello quando si puntò un’arma vera contro, non ha mai salvato nessuno tuttavia rende l’esistenza più sopportabile

La vecchia favola “al lupo al lupo”, quella che vi hanno raccontato da piccoli, quella che voi racconterete ai vostri figli. Gary mi ha messo di fronte allo stratagemma che da sempre mi consente di leggere, ossia quello di credere che si tratti di una storia vera. Se sento gridare “al lupo” io non penso ad uno scherzo.

Marìas aveva ragione, se non immediatamente, dopo alcune pagine, mi abbandono alla storia, la seguo, che l’apprezzi o meno, non metto in discussione il fatto che sia quella. Mentre stavo leggendo questo libro ho visto lo spezzone di un documentario dedicato a Gary. In quel documentario si intuiva che Gary urlava “al lupo” a riguardo del “Biglietto scaduto” perché il lupo potesse agire nelle spoglie del suo pseudonimo Ajar, concorrente al premio Goncourt. Il risultato di ciò è stato leggere con diffidenza la promessa dell’alba che è una sorta di biografia.

Le passai il braccio intorno alle spalle. Non sentivo più le risate, non vedevo più gli sguardi ironici, pensavo a tutte le battaglie che avrei combattuto per lei, alla promessa fatta a me stesso, all’alba della mia vita, di renderle giustizia, di dare un senso al suo sacrificio.

Eccolo, qui c’era lo scrittore in grado di emozionarmi prima di vedere quel documentario. Dopo di esso le pagine mi pesavano, ero il bambino deluso che ha visto il trucco, ero il contadino infuriato per aver dato credito al falso allarme del giovane pastore annoiato.
Stilisticamente il libro è più vicino a La vita davanti a sé (*1) che al Biglietto scaduto. E’ il tributo di Romain alla madre, la donna che gli ha donato la vita e che ha creduto ciecamente in lui. Una donna che sognava e mitizzava la Francia e che un giorno la raggiungerà portandosi appresso il figlio, dopo gli stenti patiti nella nativa Russia e in Polonia.

Anche questa volta il finale mi ha steso

Mi costa molto continuare, e lo farò nel modo più rapido possibile..

Mi ha ricordato Beckett e Sandro Veronesi che lo cita in uno dei suoi romanzi

E la favola al lupo, al lupo? Leggete che cosa dice Nabokov in proposito:

«La letteratura non è nata il giorno in cui un ragazzo, gridando al lupo al lupo, uscì di corsa dalla valle di Neanderthal con un gran lupo grigio alle calcagna: è nata il giorno in cui un ragazzo arrivò gridando al lupo al lupo, e non c’erano lupi dietro di lui.»

(*1) Il romanzo che fu pubblicato con lo pseudonimo di Emile Ajar e vinse il Goncourt. (Gary è l’unico autore che si sia aggiudicato il premio due volte, beffando le regole secondo le quali non può essere assegnato alla stessa persona. La prima volta si aggiudicò il premio come Romain Gary)

Gyvenimas kraštutinumuose gali būti labai liūdnas. O gali būti ir baisiai juokingas. Romainas Gary sugeba viena koja stovėti viename spektro gale, o kita – priešingame, apie baisiausius, skaudžiausius, liūdniausius dalykus pasakodamas taip, kad neįmanoma jei ne juoktis, tai bent nesišypsoti į ūsą. Ir istorijos, dažnai laviruojančios ant absurdo ribos, tuo pat metu yra tokios gyvenimiškos, net jei ir ne visada tikros. Ir Gary veikiau ne pasakoja apie tai, kaip gyveno, o daro šį tą ilgaamžiškesnio – kuria mitą. O mitas, jei tinkamai papasakotas, gali gyventi amžinai. Tą žinojo jis. O svarbiausia – žinojo jo mama. Ar ne jos visada žino geriausiai?

Po vienu skėčiu pas Romainą Gary telpa, rodos, viskas: grandioziniai užmojai (pavyzdžiui, nužudyti Hitlerį), vaikystės prisiminimai (kas gi galėtų pamiršti pirmąjį kartą, kai matė kepėją kirkinant tarnaitę?..), meilės istorijos. Pastarosios – pačios įvairiausios. Nuo gražiausios moters, sutiktos per karą, kaliošo valgymo epopėjos dėl žavingiausios kiemo gražuolės (ir kaip dabar neturėti nerealistiškų standartų Tam Vieninteliui, kuris dėl manęs kaliošo (ne)suvalgytų????), iki tinkamai paraugtų agurkėlių. Per visą savo ilgą skaitymo karjerą dėl neaiškių priežasčių buvau įsitikinusi, kad Gary – baisiai rimtas kūrėjas, o Aušros pažadas – baisiai rimtas kūrinys. Vis dėlto, autorius moka daryti kaip tik tai, ką mėgstu labiausiai – giliomis, skaudžiomis ir asmeniškomis temomis kalbėti be savigailos, paverkšlenimų ir dejonių, būdamas pačia geriausia įmanoma susireikšminusio narcizo forma. Jis sugeba pasakoti istorijas įdomias ne tik jam vienam, nors ir neaišku kiek tikras, bet tiesiog malonias klausyti. Ir dėl manęs Romainas gali reikšmintis kiek tik nori – yra dėl ko. Tiesa, negalvokit, kad viskas tik agurkėliai ir bajeriai: daug lyriškumo, subtilumo, švelnios melancholijos, bet ji tokia neperspausta, ne erzinanti, o vis tiek šviesi ir viltinga – kur kas viltingesnė, nei tikėjausi. Ir, žinoma, viską vainikuoja nuostabus V. Tauragienės vertimas.

Aišku, būtų galima tomus prirašyti apie Romaino ir jo mamos Ninos santykį, jo toksiškumą ir labiausiai smaugiančius lūkesčių pančius. Bet tie meilės deimantai, kuriuos autorius mini, ta besąlygiška meilė, kuri tikriausiai tik mamų ir yra sugebama išjausti, yra tokia visa apimanti, kad truputį net pavydu. Gi jei tavęs nemylėjo šitaip nuo pat pradžių, nebemylės jau niekada, niekada. Ir galima čia būtų psichoterapiškai pjaustyti Romainą, skrosti ir jį, ir jo mamą, narstyti po kaulelį, bet man per gražu, kad to imčiausi, skauda truputį ir skruostus, ir širdį. Ir pasirenku tikėti Romano kuriamu mitu. Nes žmogus, kuris žino gero agurkėlio svarbą, vertas to, kad juo patikėtum.

Le style de Romain Gary, son humour et surtout le personnage absolument fascinant de sa mère rendent cette lecture très agréable et suscitent des images très vives. Mon attention a été un peu perdue à certains moments, surtout (malheureusement) lorsqu'il était question de la guerre, peut-être parce que sa relation avec sa mère prend tellement de place que, lorsqu'il parle d'autre chose, on se demande un peu à quoi bon. Et aussi peut-être parce que chaque chapitre a une identité narrative forte, ils vont raconter une rencontre, un événement, une relation de sa genèse jusqu'à son terme. Du coup, peu d'éléments traversent le livre, en dehors de l'auteur/narrateur/protagoniste et de sa mère, ce qui fatigue un peu la lecture à la longue. Ça et, évidemment, la misogynie et l'homophobie de l'auteur/narrateur/protagoniste, ça aussi, ça fatigue très vite et très fort mais avec une mère pareille et dans les années 60, je n'imagine pas le travail de titan que ça aurait représenté de déconstruire tout ça.

Dans l'ensemble, c'est une lecture que je recommande bien volontiers. Les classiques que je lis avec beaucoup de satisfaction sont finalement assez rares donc c'est un vrai plaisir quand ça arrive.

Pažintį su Romain Gary pradėjau nuo jo įspūdingos autobiografijos. Tema apie nenutrūkusias bambagysles ir tėvų projektuojamus vaikų gyvenimus itin aktuali ir šiandien. Romain'o ir jo mamos Ninos istorija tikrai verčia kilstelėti antakį, žavėtis ir kartu nepritariančiai purtyti galvą, jie abu -nepaprastos asmenybės, sumanios ir niekada nepasiduodančios, kiekviena aklai besistengianti įgyvendinti sau ir kitam duotus pažadus.


Off topic truputį. Su Romain, pasirodo, turime kone identišką santykį su jūra: "Mačiau mėlyną jūrą, akmenėlių paplūdimį ir saulėje džiūstančias žvejų valtis. Žvelgiau į jūrą. Ir man kažkas nutiko. Nežinau kas: apėmė begalinė ramybė, jausmas, kad aš grįžau. Nuo tada jūra visiems laikams tapo man kuklia, bet pakankama metafizika. Nemoku kalbėti apie jūrą. Žinau tik tiek, kad ji vienu moju išlaisvina mane nuo visų įsipareigojimų. Kiekvieną kartą, kai į ją žvelgiu, tampu laimingu skenduoliu."

The main thing that remained in my memory is what Romain Gary said about his mother love to him: when you grow up with love as big as the ocean, you keep looking for such love all your life and end up dying from thirst beside the well. I hope he'll excuse the liberty I took with it-it's been years since i read it. But this is the idea.
