Arkady Strugatsky was born 25 August 1925 in Batumi; the family later moved to Leningrad. In January 1942, Arkady and his father were evacuated from the Siege of Leningrad, but Arkady was the only survivor in his train car; his father died upon reaching Vologda. Arkady was drafted into the Soviet army in 1943. He trained first at the artillery school in Aktyubinsk and later at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow, from which he graduated in 1949 as an interpreter of English and Japanese. He worked as a teacher and interpreter for the military until 1955. In 1955, he began working as an editor and writer.
In 1958, he began collaborating with his brother Boris, a collaboration that lasted until Arkady's death on 12 October 1991. Arkady Strugatsky became a member of the Union of Soviet Writers in 1964. In addition to his own writing, he translated Japanese language short stories and novels, as well as some English works with his brother.

This is the first volume of the collected works of brothers Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky, usually viewed as the greatest and most influential authors of the second half of the 20th century in Soviet SF. The works are collected mostly chronologically and the editors (chiefly Svetlana Bondarenko) attempted to restore original texts by working with both publications and drafts.
The volume contains their first two novels, a series of short stories as well as excerpts from letters and diaries, including quite interesting insights about what Soviet censorship allowed or forbade. Sometimes it borders on ridiculous, like an order to change names of protagonists because some of them are the same as of some party or state bosses, or ban on any weaponizing/militarization of the space – originally there were space pirates in one of the plots. It should be noted that while later the brothers became famous for their satire of the regime and social themes in SF, the earliest works are straightforward Soviet SF of the day with blameless heroes of communist future.

Also the book has a lengthy introduction, which is the weakest part: the author, Леонид Филиппов, takes an extremely elitist view, saying that most SF is crud, not worthy of attention, but brothers’ works are gems…

На мой взгляд, первый блин авторов вышел комом. Большая часть произведений скучна и утомительна («Страна багровых туч», «Путь на Амальтею», «Спонтанный рефлекс», «Испытание СКИБР», «Частные предположения»). В других - интересная завязка, но провальный финал («Извне», «Шесть спичек», «Забытый эксперимент», «Чрезвычайное происшествие»). По большому счету во всем сборнике мне однозначно понравился только рассказ «Человек из Пасифиды».

Учитывая лавину цензуры, с которой столкнулись авторы во времена их выхода на писательскую стезю, данный том оставил прятные впечатления от прочитанного. Наибольшее впечатление несомненно произвело центральное произведение тома - "Страна багровых туч". Переживания героев, их мотивация и внутренний мир пускай и большими мазками, но удалось предать. По крайней мере мне удалось получить ;) и впечатлиться твердостью намерений и характерами персонажей. Без сомнений преступаю к следующему тому.

С интересом читал только рассказы, т.н. "Жилинский цикл", похоже, не особо нравится.

These early works by Strugtasky brothers are about ordinary brave communists who are giving herioc trial runs around Solar System.
There are no evil guys or complicated characters. All people we meet are doing what they can to do all the best.
In the second decade of XXI century these two novels from this first volume ("The land of crimson clouds" and " A road to Almateya") reads unbelievably naive. Strugtasky brothers' satire and thrillers from the 60's somehow can be predicted in these texts, but later dark, tragic and anti-totalitarian books from 70s and 80s - in no way.
