Liechtenstein: A Modern History

Rate this book
Liechtenstein--an Alpine curiosity? A haven for financial criminals? Or a success story in modern Europe? This book examines the reality behind the clichés. Liechtenstein's history has been dramatic and precarious. Several times it was in danger of vanishing from the map, most recently in 1939 when local Nazis tried to seize power and swallow the Principality into the Third Reich. Liechtenstein has a tiny population, no natural resources and the image of a less-than-serious fairy-tale kingdom with dubious banking laws which have often proved the bane of international tax authorities. But since the 1940s Liechtenstein has actually transformed itself into one of the most advanced hi-technology countries in Europe. This fascinating book charts the story of one of the world's most unlikely countries, revealing a strategy which its rulers and elite have used through the centuries to ensure its survival.

This isn't an introduction to Liechtenstein but rather an in-depth look at the country as of 2003. And as someone who's read a lot about Liechtenstein, I would highly recommend this for its attention to detail.

Beattie covers the history, politics, economy, modern state and the future of Liechtenstein. Some parts of course will be drier to some depending on where your interests lie, but it's still an excellent overview of the country.

Definitely not a quick read but a good read.

I will rate this one because not only did Beattie carry my whole research paper, but also wrote a book I could enjoy! I absolutely must visit Liechtenstein now: probably most idiosyncrasies—my favorite category of things in this universe—per square mile (or person).

If you're planning to study Liechtenstein, doesn't matter the specific area, you're gonna need this book. Especially the history of this small but great nation is exquisitely explained, from Prince Hans-Adam I to Prince Hans-Adam II, everything is covered.
