When the children have been good That is, be it understood, Good at killing, good at lying, Good at on each other spying When their fourteen Pas and Mas Grandmammas and Grandpapas Great grandparents too are sure That their Aryan stock is pure They shall have the pretty things Krupp Von Bohlen kindly brings.
(The whole thing is available here. Thank you Matt for telling me about this!)
This is nasty and mean, but not as nasty or mean as I hoped it would be. Those “Nazi Boys” all get their come-uppance all right, but it could have been harder. The illustrations are great though. Almost identical to the original ones from Struwwelpeter with lots of small details – a labor of love.
Thanks to Manny for providing the link to the PDF in his review.
Just like the original story "Der Struwwelpeter", this was so much fun to read! Considering this was written while the Second World War was still going on (1941), this was surprisingly discerning. The authors totally saw through Hitler & Co. Here is a little excerpt:
Mamma comes homes, here Goebbels stands And looks quite sad, and shows his hands - "Ah!" said Mamma, "So, Gobby then No more can hold his poison pen. No more will echo roof and rafter To 'Angriff' nor to 'Beobachter'."
There is a lot of political events hiding in between the lines which I found to be awesome. It's nothing you haven't heard before but it gives a lot of room for discussion and interpretation. I definitely loved this book! I would have loved it even more if the authors had parodied all the nations, not just Germany and Italy. Nevertheless, a great read!
This is a really clever parody of Struwwelpeter. Witty, catchy, and humorous, it makes appropriate fun of the Nazi regime at a time when the world really needed it, 1941. I purchased this book at the Dachau concentration camp bookstore so it has an even more "gottcha" factor for me in that.
Great book! I think I would have liked it better if I knew a bit more about the history, so I would have more context haha. Would like the visit the Struwwelpeter museum someday :)
I loved this book. The drawings match the stories just like the original. I liked the story of Little Musso Head in Air very much, but the best for me was The Story of the Nazi Boys.
The idea (vivid imagination) of Stalin painting Hitler red... So funny! If you can lay hands on it: I recommend it!
Sharp good-awful satire - would deserve five stars ... but for the sometimes really too doggerel German translation. Admittedly, translating German rhymes into English ones back into German (and doing so after soaking up and trying to re-emit the cynical political English) is quite a challenge, but still ...
Overall a brilliant read with pointy caricature Struwwelhitler pictures.
Brilliant piece of counter-propaganda, with clever rhymes and amusing (and gruesome!) illustrations. I also love that the proceeds went to the war effort. Difficult to imagine a time when the citizens of Western nations banded together for a common and noble cause. In comparison, our generation has only banded together to bomb brown people for spurious reasons.
