Sense and Sensibility & Pride and Prejudice, with Songs from Regency England

Rate this book
In this delightful double bill, narrator Alison Larkin's AudioFile Earphones Award-winning recording of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice are followed by songs from Regency England to give listeners a sense of what after-dinner family entertainment might have sounded like in Jane Austen's time.

Recorded in a drawing room not unlike the Bennets', a young lady who sounds suspiciously like Mary Bennet sings The Lonely Ash Grove, Ye Banks and Braes, and Down by the Salley Gardens.

Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are an implicit critique of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), were a modest success but brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels—Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons.
Since her death Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. A significant transition in her reputation occurred in 1833, when they were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series (illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering and sold as a set). They gradually gained wide acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Her work has inspired a large number of critical essays and has been included in many literary anthologies. Her novels have also inspired many films, including 1940's Pride and Prejudice, 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2016's Love & Friendship.

No good Italian word for "witty" or for "silly," so when Mr Bennett calls his younger daughters, "two of the silliest..." the translation (not M's*) of "piu stupida" fails, as does "sarcasmo" for witty. Also, none for "folly," here "stupidaggine."
Even colloquialism that reveals Elizabeth's thought when she first sees Darcy's great house, to be "mistress of Pemberley might be something!" rendered almost legally, "un privilegio davvero esclusivo"(Ch.43). Important, because late in the novel Lizzy jokes when Jane asks when she fell for Darcy, "quando ho visto la sua magnifica Pemberley"(Ch.59)

Nor can mild English ejaculations except as religious oaths, like "Santo cielo!" for Mrs. Bennet's wrongheaded "Good gracious!" at the prospect of Mr Darcy's intrusion so welcome to her Lizzie.(Ibid.)
But Italian does very well with public appearances, so when Lydia makes a spectacle of herself, Italian captures it in one word, "figuraccia."
We sometimes forget how Austen satirizes novels then in the mode, like the gothic in Northanger Abbey, and the picaresque here listing the places on the way to Pemberley she will not describe: Oxford, Blenheim, Warwick, Kenilworth, Birmingham (Ch.42).
Only a mind like Austen's can render hurt and danger--Lydia's running away unmarried-- hilarious. Mrs. Bennet, who raised Lydia, blames everybody but herself, then fears her husband is chasing them down in London in order to duel: "so che si batterà con Wickham...e allora resterà ucciso" (Ch.47).
If JA's complex irony is lost in translation, her works become mere novels of money and marriage. Boring. Maybe Mark Twain, who felt them so, was reading essentially an Italian translation. But Italian seems to heighten JA's satiric element.
As for Sense and Sensibility, Marianne ed Elinor rappresentano una vera concorrenza culturale; Austen ha osservato questa con arguzia: Marianne, “Oh! with what transporting sensations have I formerly seen them fall! How have I delighted, as I walked, to see them driven in showers about me by the wind! What feelings have they, the season, the air altogether inspired! Now there is no one to regard them. They are seen only as a nuisance, swept hastily off, and driven as much as possible from the sight.” At which the cooler Elinor replies quietly, “It is not everyone who has your passion for dead leaves.”
Solo per questo passaggio, merita quattro stelle. Piu secondo me.

A hardcover including two novels by Jane Austen: Sense and Sensibility (1811) and Pride and Prejudice (1813), with illustrations (black and white, and colour) by the brothers C.E. and H.M. Brock (late 19th century- early 2oth century).

To me, it is an interesting edition because of its ilustrations.

Me encantó! Y lo disfruté!

Pride and Prejudice:
i loved this so much.

Bunch of thoughts!
- slow start, almost boring. but it is such an easy read you can glide right trhough it to get to the good part
- you definitely notice Jane Austen wasn't comfortable writing all the dialogues cause she skips some of them in favour of descriptions. not bad but i always love how she does it (especially after reading Emma) sad she misses on some of the most crucial ones, like Darcy's confession and Elizabeth's acceptance at the end
- i want to read the original cause this translation was sort of funky
- i love how in the ending chapter she explains what happened to all of them, a sort of epilogue as if it was a 2000s movie. i'm always sad reading Emma that it ends with the wedding so i appreciated it so much

anyways it was great, now i REALLY want more than ever that edition with all the letters

Sense and Sensibility:
idk how to feel. it certainly isn't Jane Austen's most refined work but it does the job at conveying what she wants i guess

idk i guess i was kind of bored tbh. like it's interesting but there's chapters where you just feel stuck cause nothing is happening. It's painfully noticeable by the end when she's left with 50 pages to tie everything up and it feels sort of rushed and/or out of nowhere. We literally never see Marianne express how she feels about the Colonel, and i was convinced up until Edward returns he would actually marry Elinor cause they interact more. I was absolutely NOT sold on the romance of the Colonel and Marianne. And we never come again to that tiny detail that his protegee is living unmarried with a child in the countryside. What about that???

And then i'm also NOT sold on Elinor and Edward, i think he is useless. Out of all the love interests in the novels i've read by her, he's the most basic ass one. Mr Knightley would eat him UP. Like wdym you got dumped and only for that matter came back??? If it wasn't for Lucy dumpling him he never would've talked to Elinor and gave her an explanation for what happened. Even freaking Willoughby comes back and explains he was in love but made shitty decisions cause he's a shitty person. I can respect that and the sisters do to. So couldn't Edward do the same??? Seemed to me he was perfectly fine leaving Elinor with the doubt wether he loved her at some point or not, which can absolutely drive you crazy when you're heartbroken. So yeah, i don't like him. And i can't believe how she skips over him confessing his feelings but it was also so funny like bruh (thankfully she gets more comfortable writing this stuff in later novels)

Uhhh what else. I didn't like any of the characters if i'm being honest, and i don't think it's only due to the fact Elinor herself spends all her time speaking badly about them. They're probably the most boring and insufferable and fake group out of (again) the novels i've read from her, but i think it's kind of the point, being very critical about english society and stuff. I just think she conveys it better in Pride and Prejudice by making everyone comical af, but here every character of the bunch is just irritating

Anyways i got the message, it's fine. Will probably re read at some point, maybe i'll appreciate it more in the future like with P&P

Tutto sembrava anzi portarla a chiarire finalmente i suoi sentimenti, e non aveva mai capito così sinceramente di amarlo tanto come ora, quando l'amore era vano.

Classico meraviglioso!

I would have rated higher as I think Alison Larkin does a brilliant job narrating but there was too much music between chapters. I like that they were showcasing songs from the period but it would have been sufficient to have a short song at the beginning and end of each book without the musical interludes between chapters.

Abridged audio. Quick and light. Joanna Lumley is so much fun to listen to!

*I listened to a slightly different version than this. It was only Pride & Prejudice by Talking Classics. I listened to Sense & Sensibility read by Anna Massey sometime last year or the year before.

(I've only read Pride And Prejudice at the moment)

My first Jane Austen Novel and I loved it so much! I finally get why Mr. Darcy is the most loved character in romance. It was such a good male protagonist and couple with Elizabeth Bennet they were just fantastic!
Also, this made me realize how many tropes were made famous by Austen! Her writing skills were amazing!

I took an online Austen quiz to see which character I was most like. The results were that I was most like Eleanor, so I thought I'd go back and re-read one of my favorites! I'm loving it, almost as much as I loved the PBS version shown recently on t.v.
