The Complete Supernatural Stories

Rate this book
Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. Her first novel, "Mary Barton", was published anonymously in 1848. The best-known of her remaining novels are "Cranford" (1853), "North and South" (1854), and "Wives and Daughters" (1865). Gaskell became popular for her writing, especially her ghost stories, aided by Charles Dickens, who published her work in his magazine "Household Words". Her supernatural stories are superior examples of the sentimental ghost tale so typical of the Victorian period. They combine a taste for the macabre with a deeply-felt sympathy for the extremes of female experience.

Some of the most beautifully chilling stories you'll read

Gothic Tales is right... The imagery and scenes Gaskell sets are so vivid, you react with the characters. For her time, she wrote excellent female characters that bring a new awareness to the experiences and society of life in different eras. Though written mostly in the mid1800s, the book features some stories set in earlier years, the 18th and 17th centuries. Her style adjusts and adapts accordingly in enjoyable, tasteful uses of dialect and language. My favorite stories were The Grey Woman, The Old Nurse's Story, and Lois the Witch. Definitely a great fall read - as a bonus most stories take place in October!
