This book presented its information clearly, though with little confirmation. It introduces extrasensory perceptions and the wonder they generate in humans. The author marvels at the unknown and, at the end of the book, suggests that the young reader might enter a scientific field to try to discover the causes of these sensory perceptions.
This book was written in 1981. It needs to be updated.
On page 60, Uri Geller's ability to bend metal objects is marveled at. His autobiography is recounted, but the events are not confirmed. His ability to bend spoons with his mind and other so-called abilities have since been debunked.
There is a lag in time between scientific discovery and when the new knowledge reaches laypeople. On page 75, Animal E S P, the author marvels about the unknown reason why birds can migrate easily, even when they'd never been to their destination before. Here are discoveries that led to the understanding of how birds migrate without having done it before: In 1963, Salvatore Bellini discovered magnetotaxis (the ability to use Earth's magnetic field to navigate and orient oneself) in certain bacteria. In 1971, William Keeton discovered that magnets attached to homing pigeons' backs caused them to be disoriented. In 1975, Richard Blakemore discovered the magnetite crystals within the magnetoreceptive species used for magnetotaxis. Many species of animals were found to be magnoreceptive, including honeybees, birds, salmon, sea turtles, and even humans. Birds also use flyways that include places to rest and feed.
The names of some of the people in the book were changed, so it might not be possible to confirm the stories that are told in the book.
On page 50, the Case of the Long Island Poltergeist recounts the 1958 story of the James Hermann family of Seaford, NY. In the book, Jimmy Hermann's name was changed to Mike Taylor. I found that story in an edition of Life Magazine from 1958. The reader has to rely upon the author to be telling the truth or not.
For those interested in the paranormal and parapsychology, the Rhine Research Center is the successor to the Duke University Parapsychology Laboratory, which operated between 1935 and the 1960s. The Rhine Research Center is a non-profit organization.
This is one of several Scholastic books that I have had since I was a kid. In trying to cull my library, I thought I would give them a reread before finding them a good home.
A very enjoyable book that brought back a lot of memories. The "true" stories are well done, and the book is a great introduction to ESP, etc for kids 6-8.
Highly recommended for your little ones that like mind over matter.
A very Fast read. For Kids but good for adults also. Small Stories on Animal ESP and Plant ESP and Dream ESP. Nice ans Simple.
