Shoji Gatoh ( 賀東招二), born on July 11, 1971, is a Japanese author from Shiga Prefecture, Japan. He is best known for the creation of the Full Metal Panic! series that included light novels, manga and anime. He is not only an author but also an anime scenarist, for example "The Day of Sagittarius" of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and three episodes of Lucky Star.

I'm pleased that they packaged these two together, since it's a two-parter, rather than a stand alone story, like the other books. Amazingly, doubling the thickness did not make it much longer of a read. This set does an excellent job of explaining some of the technology that is kind of glossed over in the anime, adding a new layer of understanding to the climactic events. It also digs much deeper into Kaname and Souske's psyches than the anime ever could, enriching the their character growth and making for an overall more satisfying story. It also has less of a villain from the anime that I never really liked, so that's a bonus as well.

So glad that Tokyopop released both parts together in a single volume before going under. Part 1 is basically the resolution of volume 3 and set-up for volume 5, with 2 excellent haircut scenes. Part 2 has good character arc and development for Sousuke, and nice resolution for all the problems in Part 1.

Drastically changed from the anime and I think I liked that story better.
