Sola #1

Sola, Vol. 01

Yorito is a high school student who’s obsessed with taking pictures of the sky. A chance meeting at a vending machine introduces him to a girl named Matsuri. Matsuri’s no ordinary girl, though — she’s actually a Yaka, a 350-year-old creature also known the “Calamity of the Night.” Yaka are supernatural beings with strange powers, beings who never age and who possess almost superhuman strength. Because sunlight is deadly to Yaka, Matsuri has been forced to live a life of solitude, and Yorito is the first friend she’s ever had. There’s even more to Matsuri, however, than her big secret. She’s being followed by Takeshi, a mysterious sword-wielding man who’s intent on killing her. But why? And why is Takeshi unharmed by Matsuri’s powers? Thrust against his will into an otherworldly battle, will Yorito find the courage to protect Matsuri, their friendship, and himself?

I admit, I'm one of "those people" that usually only buys manga after seeing the anime. Sola was no exception. However, this is a manga adaptation of the anime series rather than the more common vice versa.

The story is still written by the anime creator and the artwork is very faithful to the original character designs.

I thought the anime series had great potential that was cut somewhat short by the 13 episode run. I'm hoping that the manga can more fully flesh out the story.

I expected the first issue to be just slice-of-life, "setting the scene" type action, but I was surprised to see the main story arc develop rather quickly. I'm eager to see where the rest of the series goes.

On a side note, this was my first purchase of a book by the Broccoli Books publisher. The paper quality is superb with almost a gloss to it and the ink is exceptional. You can tell this publisher takes pride in their work and isn't just trying to mass produce for a quick buck.

This comic was also an anime.
Sola is about a female Yaka "Immortal creature" named Matsuri.Yakas have super natural powers but they are afraid of sun rays.Matsuri loves to drink tomato juice from a vending machine in a park. One night she met a typical school boy named yorito in the park when she was kicking the vending machine in the park as it was spoiled.Yorito like to look at the sky.
they soon became friends.

This was a cute little book, but I think I would need to have a couple of the books to really get into it.

This was a rare experience -- a manga derived from an anime that I actually liked! The art was excellent including drawings of people, buildings and the sky (which has an important role). The story was clear without needing to have seen the anime (I haven't).

There are additional volumes that I don't have. I wish I did.

Yorito is a high school student with a rather rough life - his parents have passed away and his older sister is hospitalized. He occupies his free time visiting his sister and indulging in his hobby of taking photographs of the sky, until crossing paths with a strange girl who can't go out in the sun and seems to have a rather dangerous enemy...

Sola is very interesting and surprisingly engaging. There are several mysteries surrounding the characters and there are a bunch of clues and hints throughout the volume. It has a deliberate pace so the characters aren't really fleshed out yet, but there's enough to make you start to care about their struggles.

The art is solid. It's very minimalist in backgrounds but the characters are detailed and drawn well. As usual with Broccoli Books the production quality is excellent.

There is a fair bit of fan-service, but for the most part it's not as over-the-top as I've seen in a lot of other manga and is usually secondary to the plot and action.

Sola Volume 1 is a decent start to the series and has a fair number of hooks to bring readers back to find out what's going on. Unfortunately the second volume wasn't published in the US before Broccoli International USA was shut down. I enjoyed this a lot, but I don't know that's it's really worth seeking out without the rest of the story.

Not the greatest book around. You just have to really get into it.
