There have been innumerable books designed to give children an educational introduction to the animal world. Animal Friends is a rather unusual entry in the genre.
Although distributed by Time-Life Books, it is obvious the this book was originally printed in Japan. It contains an unusual combination of art styles, resulting in a jumble rather displeasing to the eye. In addition to color photos, Animal Friends sports familiar big-eyed anime cartoons, realistic scientific drawings, American storybook-style artwork, Disneyesque cutesy animals, and art seemingly designed to replicate a child’s drawings. I don’t think I’ve seen a more disharmonious mishmash of art and artistic styles in one book, ever.
Animal Friends has the distinction of containing one of the most unintentionally surreal images I’ve seen in a children’s book. In the section on lions, a family of the big cats is depicted in the cutesy-cuddly manner of a 1950s-era Golden book. The family is grinning and chuckling as the adorable, smiling cubs bury their heads in the dead carcass of an equally cute cartoon zebra—complete with bright red blood splashes!
Aside from the bizarre illustration choices, Animal Friends contains some positive and negative issues humane educators and veg*n parents may want to be aware of.
The Good:
--Animals are identified as friends and their behaviors are explained in a positive and sympathetic way. Of course, learning about animals is the first step to caring about and protecting them.
--Each section contains a small “To the Parent” section with more in-depth information on the species being discussed.
--As for its educational value, Animal Friends is pretty decent, although at one point a pair of budgerigars are identified as “lovebirds” and rabbits are referred to as rodents.
The Bad:
--Cats are said to “wander around outside and explore in different places” at night, and two different pages show scenes of cats running freely through neighborhoods unsupervised. Considering the many dangers roaming pets face, this will likely have cat lovers cringing.
--A section answering the question “Why can chimpanzees do tricks?” depicts a drawing of a chimp riding a unicycle. It goes downhill from there. The following page goes on to depict photographs of a dog wearing a tutu while jumping through a ring of fire, and sea lions in a circus act. Another photo shows a performing dolphin at a Japanese marine park. Considering the atrocities we were all exposed to in The Cove (www.thecovemovie.com), this scene strikes me as especially sad. Of course, no moral discussion of the ethics of using animals for amusement is discussed, only that the depicted species are “clever,” “tame,” and “friendly.”

El libro Nuestros amigos los animales, nos brinda bastante información interesante sobre actitudes y comportamientos de animales domésticos y salvajes como el perro, el gato y el caballo, las imágenes presentadas son fotografías reales de estos mismos, lo que le permite ser más cercano para los niños. En sus páginas contiene una sección de actividades, lo que hace que el lector pueda aplicar y comprender de mejor manera lo que leyó. El texto contiene bastante información por lo que es recomendable leerlo por partes y en compañía de un adulto.
En mi opinión es un libro de buena calidad, ya que permite que los lectores puedan conocer un poco más sobre los animales que los rodean día a día, y a pesar de que sea un libro antiguo logra su objetivo.
