—advocate: grocer’s wife
—character development is incredible, very clear moments of growth and epiphany
—truly felt like a period piece and not like modern values put in an old time-y setting

—pride/prejudice
—vendetta
—vigilante/law/order
—community dynamics
i loved this book. the writing was consistent and clear. the character development was well explained. while often inelegant and at times a little indulgent, it delivers on a staggering number of levels. the clear walk-through of the internal landscape of all characters conveys the complexity of a whole, three-dimensional life in the span it takes some authors to tell about one weekend. i have been so deeply moved by the perspective and writing style of this book. it was so clearly unique while remaining firmly amongst its sisters in the romance pantheon, paying tribute to the classic romance plots and archetypes. truly an experience.

I generally enjoy Leigh's work, but these ones seem to suffer (more than usual) from grammar mistakes that make it looks like the book was scanned and never proofread. That does detract from the pleasure of reading them.
While I enjoyed this book as well, I did find Eliza to be a somewhat strange character. While she is made out as a very principled woman, it should be clear to everybody (including herself) that her principles are misplaced and that she should wise up. Additionally, she just generally seems to not have enough sense to know when to keep herself out of trouble, which seems at odds with her general intelligence. Overall, still an enjoyable read, but not his best work.

The heroine is sooooo stupid

Great western. Lots of action. Liked it very much. Eliza was a little mixed up in her priorities but she straightened out on the end. Cord was as solid a man as would always came through in the end.
