Dragon Soul #5

Owned by Fate

Rate this book
The Beteferoce five dragon shifters, each with a strong elemental power and a destiny that will not be denied.

Dr. Mike Beteferoce turned his back on magic long ago. His heart broke and his desire for a soul mate disappeared. When he sees his family crest branded above Corryn’s heart, his first instinct is to flee. The last thing he wants now is a Fae interfering in his life—especially one who has already rejected him.

But fate has other plans.

Corryn knows Mike is his soul mate, has known since the sigil was branded on his skin centuries ago. Long before Mike came to him as a studly young dragon just entering his prime. It was far too early for them to be together then, but now their time has come.

But despite their draw to each other, Corryn doesn’t believe Mike can accept him for who—and what—he is. Mike must breathe life into their bond—loving Corryn as both soul mate and Fae—if they are to fulfill their destiny.

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

So ... there’s no going around it so let’s admit this book falls really REALLY short. 😩 I’ll admit, I was really loving the first 25% of the book although it was really angsty. The first 25% was beautifully written and it read like a folktale. ❤️ Mike and Corryn are soulmates but because of a misunderstanding, Mike now hates Cor and he has been pining over Mike ever since. And it has been centuries already. (Apparently, dragons and faes in this world are immortal. 😁) The first quarter was about how Cor won Mike’s heart back and how they finally succumbed to their soulbond. It was angsty but like I said, romantic and beautiful and I was really hopeful for the rest of the book. Unfortunately, the goodness ends there. 😭 The remaining 75% was pages and pages of the repetition of sex (It’s too much and I can’t believe I’m complaining about too much sex 😭😂) and Corryn still apologizing over what happened centuries ago and Mike assuring him that he forgave him. Seriously, how many times can you bring that up? 🙄 It’s like two different people wrote this book. The writing of the rest of the book was like reading a teenage girl’s sex diary, childish and petulant and too much sex. 🤷‍♀️ In the end, I stopped caring for both characters and I was just glad it ended. I might rate this lower but since I was impressed with the first 25% of the book, I decided to rate it 2 stars. I was really excited when I requested this book on Netgalley but now I feel sad. 😔

A fitting conclusion to the dragon series

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 6/10

PROS:
- There’s more plot here than in the previous volumes in the series. Now, this doesn’t mean that the plot compares to what you’ll read in books by other authors. But this one’s got a *little* more meat to it than just sex for days.
- When the men finally get together physically (which happens about 25% in and shows quite a bit of restraint for this author in that department), Corryn has given up his magic and has turned into an old man. But Mike never says anything about that; all he sees is his mate. He doesn’t see Corryn’s physical imperfections at all.
- Corryn has spent hundreds of years waiting for Mike to come around. I like that Mike is now willing to be the pursuer after all those years of frustration on Corryn’s part.

CONS:
- I’m all for a bit of drama before the guys get together, especially compared to how quickly the sex gets going in the earlier books. But the “oh, we can’t…” “but we must!” back-and-forth is a little much here. I always felt like Mike and Corryn weren’t quite having the same conversation, so their arguments never quite made sense.
- This is sort of related to the point above: the conversations beat around the bush quite a bit. The guys seem to take a while sometimes getting around to saying what they mean; at times, I figured out what they were saying lines or even pages before they finally spit it out.

Overall comments: We finally get to see all of the brothers together at the end of this story, and they go to their lair up in northern Canada and perform a sex magick ritual, and it’s all great fun. I’m intrigued by the idea of the other magical creatures in this fantasy world, but there’s so little development of the setting/lore in this series that if additional books or spinoffs were written, I’m not sure I would read them. I’d be too afraid that they’d be like the stories in this series--80 percent sex and not enough development of the actual plot for my taste.

Sean Michael's Beteferoce books come to an end with an explosive conclusion. At last, the elder Beteferoce brother Micah gets his story as he finally lays claim to the powerful fae Corryn. For centuries, Micah had suffered, wishing for his own fated mate. But life had dealt him a dirty hand and he was left broken time and again.

Using the years to help humanity, he watched his brothers find their soul mates, silently hateful of what meeting his own mate would entailed.

But a prophecy needed to be fulfilled, and all of the brothers needed bonding for the magic to consume. Though this book focused on Corryn and Micah and their reconnect, laced with tons of eroticism as only Sean Michael can, the mystery surrounding the men was revealed.

Discover what the magic and pick up this entire serious and bring home the conclusion filled with magic. I found all these books enjoyable.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through Netgalley.

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Mike and Corryn have a history. While Corryn knows why he was put on this earth, it was difficult for him to turn Mike away when he first learned they were mated.

Years later, Mike has dedicated his life to helping others. That includes his brothers. He knows that it's great that they have all found their mates, but Mike can't help but feel envious. He knew he had a mate years ago, but when he was rejected, he turned all emotions off.

Corryn has helped each of Mike's brother's find their mate, even after sacrificing his own happiness. He knew that there was much more work to be done and now that his work is complete, he wants Mike to be able to find his soul mate again. Corryn saves his magic to send it to a new body. He knows that Mike had a terrible experience with another Fae and Corryn doesn't want his "nature" to be a barrier to their mating.

When Mike realizes that Corryn is fading, leaving him for a while, Mike will have none of that. He wants to have Corryn's love now. Watching both Mike and Corryn find happiness was great! Seeing all of the betaforce brothers together was hilarious.

I enjoyed this series a lot but wish that Mike and Corryn's story was more about them and less about the prophecy. I wanted them to have more of a chance. To see them together, without really the fast and furious coming together. While they did have good chemistry, I just didn't really gel with this story. While it wasn't what I was expecting, it was a good book.

I just love this series. I'm sad that this is probably the last book in the series. Micah/Mike is the oldest and last brother to find his mate. We find out that he knew a long time ago who it was but was rejected. We have met Corryn in all the previous books, he inked those amazing tattoos. Once again, like all the others in the series, this book is filled with so much love and sex. So sweet and so loving. We got to see all rhe brothers and their mates from previous books. We find out their destiny and purpose. I loved the chemistry and passion between Micah/Mike and Corryn and I hated to see their story end.

This is what I’m looking for in dragon shifters. You get the very human side as well as the majestic dragon. I love the world and the lore the author created. Corryn being Fae just makes it perfect. So much passion and romance with the right balance of sadness and regret. I got nervous when these two got together about how the rest of the book would go. Man it just kicked everything in high gear. It is more than you expect and better than you can imagine. Written in such a way that I could picture some of the scenes. Simply put, it is magical. I highly recommend reading the whole series.

I truly wanted to love this, I just couldn't. I was super excited about the whole dragon shifter trope and having a fae for a mate, but this just didn't do it for me.

There was so much sex and not enough ANYTHING ELSE. I also was completely unimpressed with the dialogue. It was super simplistic and both MC's sounded very uneducated.

This one just didn't work for me.

Owned by Fate is the fifth book in the Dragon Soul series and unfortunately I expected more. I expected this to be an all out blockbuster of an ending. After all I have read the four prior books each featuring a different brother finding their soulmates and realizing their element in the world. This started out promising, but it never really picked up speed.

Corryn, a fae, knew he was Mike's soulmate from the beginning. He was placed with the Beteferoce brothers to look after them and guide them in finding their soulmates. Mike realized Corryn was his soulmate, but it was too early in their life to explore that bond. Corryn had other things to attend to, so he sent Mike packing. Mike was shattered to the bone.

Finally, many years later, Corryn is ready to have Mike with him, only Mike is still harboring hurt and distrust from not only Corryn, but all the fae as a whole. Corryn does a good job of bringing Mike around and realizing that they are truly soulmates, and they must be together. Only their bond is in shatters. It needs love and affection and care to bring it back.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book. How Mike and Corryn's story weaved itself around time was interesting. Once they were together, it was a sex-fest. Now that in itself isn't anything knew-all the books were like that when each dragon found their soulmate, I didn't feel like there was any end game. I wanted more time just around them-enjoying each other-without having sex. Corryn knew there was a final piece to be played, but he didn't say anything. When the other brothers started showing up knowing that they for some reason had to be there, again Corryn was mute. He knew the prophecy, but didn't share it.

Now I understand he wanted time with his soulmate. Plus there was still a lot of hurt and regret that needed to be addressed and worked out by talking. Which never really happened. No heart to heart as you will. All the sex didn't absolve all those centuries old pent up feelings! The other brothers had had their soulmates for quite a bit of time, I just felt Corryn needed to be honest and straightforward about what the next step was. When Greyson talked about the lore he had been studying and his interpretations, I felt Corryn needed to jump in and correct or affirm what he was telling them all. I was done with his secrets at this point and wanted everybody to know what was up. Put it all out there on the table to discuss.

Overall I liked the series. It was original and I liked the characters. Each book had it's merits and I of course had my favorites too. I guess I just expected something of a blow your socks off ending that never came in this book.

This is book #5 in the Dragon Soul series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. To avoid spoilers, and to better understand this great series, I recommend reading this in order.

Mike knows he should be with his mate. Being sent away has made him bitter and resentful. If only he could forget. If only he could go back in time and talk him into taking a chance.

Corryn knows in his heart who he should be with. He has always known. Now, with his mate avoiding him - his heart is one big ache. Magic has helped him survive this long - maybe it will keep him warm while he waits....

Destiny plays a major part in this whole amazing series. However, in this case it could literally cause a problem for these two characters. I found this story to be both compelling and profound. Quite frankly, this author's best work yet. I was moved, and eagerly turning each page.

Excellent end to a great series

This is my favorite dragon shifter series, and one of my all time favorite series, by far. I love how each dragon, and mate, have truly seemed to embody his element without being stereotypical, or over the top. Micah and Corryn's story had been a long time in coming, and it was well worth the wait.

The first third of this book was, honestly, heartbreaking. I really empathized with Corryn's despair and his choice to fade so that Micah would no longer be reminded of his history with the fae. I wish that there was a bit more clarity on what exactly was going on with Corryn's magic after they got together. It wasn't clear if it was the old magic surging, or something new, or some combination of the two.

Ultimately, I loved that Micah and Corryn were able to find their HEA and join with the dragons and mates to help the world become a better place.

The Beteferoce brothers are dragons shifters that have strong elemental powers and a destiny that will stop at nothing to be seen through to the end. Mike turned his back on his magic a long time ago after his heart was broken and his desire to find his soul mate disappeared. Corryn has known Mike was his soul mate for a long time, but their first meeting wasn't their time to be together, but now it is.

Corryn and Mike were an interesting couple but their lack of communication was frustrating at time, they seemed to be having totally different conversations throughout the book. I was intrigued by parts of the book, but I think the relationship between Corryn and Mike could have been developed a bit more. It felt like this story focused more on the prophecy than the relationship between Corryn and Mike. While I understand that part of the book needed to be wrapped up also, it just felt like it took over the book.

This book is for Corryn and Micah. But all the brothers show up near the end. A kind of accumulation book.
Micah went to court Corryn at a very young age. Corey denied him and hurt Micah badly. Plus other events happen. Then years, boots of years later, they have an encounter. Things progress. We have some magic and some tension. Things work them selves out. But a really good part of this tale is when everyone is together. Some real fun stuff happens.
There is magic, romance and lots of sex. A good read, as well as entertaining. This could be read as a stand alone. But obviously you get more of you read more.

I feel if we could out the middleish part of the book, I would have loved it. It is kind of about second chances between these soul mates. But there was way too much sex and Corryn constantly apologizing for what happened centuries ago. I loved the initial coming back together and Corryn willing to give up his magic and giving it to Micah. He was willing to die and come back with a clean slate and start all over again. I loved when everyone cames together in the end to fulfill a sort of prophecy.

This is the 5th installment of the Dragon Soul Series. This is a MM shifter/fantasy book, it has dragons and fae. This is the first story of this series that I have read and I must say I really enjoyed it, I plan to read the remaining books. The characters are well developed and complex. The story moves at a good pace with lots of ups and downs. Overall a good fantasy book. I received a copy of this from Netgalley for an honest review.

3.5 stars. I had this on pre order because it’s the last of a series I’ve enjoyed. I didn’t feel it was the best of them, but I’ll read anything from Sean Michael and I’ve always found something to like. The ending was a bit contrived and I’m just sorry there is no real dragon/fey magic in this world that could really use some right now.

The beginning of the book was nice, and I really felt for Corryn. His estrangement with Mike is due to a misunderstanding, and both of them suffer for it, for centuries. It was sad, and angsty, and I ate it up!! Then they reconcile, and it is downhill from there. So much sex, and hush and shh and I was glad when it was over.

This was definitely the best of the ones I've read in the series. A much larger portion of the story is dedicated to the emotional bond between Micah and Corryn, rather than their sexual bond. As such I found myself drawn to their story more so than the other couples.

DNF. Disliked Corryn who was a maniplator, non-communicator, victim-player, and whiner. Didn't care for the time lapses in the plot. Story was like a simplistic outline without a lot of detail.

Mike & Corryn's story was both sweet and heartbreaking, which I didn't expect. Corryn had lived with the pain of knowing what he did to Mike for centuries. Because of his denial and rejection, Mike turned to another Fae who broke him in more ways than one. Corryn never stopped loving him though. He had very good reasons for turning Mike down all those years ago, but he also knew he could have handled it a lot better than he did. For that reason, he went to great lengths to try to make things right, but Fate had other plans.

Their destiny brought all the Beteferoce brothers and their mates together in Owned by Fate. Since Corryn had finally found what he thought he had lost - at least in this lifetime, he wasn't anxious for things to end quite so soon.

This series had its ups and downs and there was a LOT of sex, so if that's not what you're used to, prepare yourself. I admit that there were times that I skimmed through parts of all of these books, but I still loved the story and the world that Sean Michael built around these dragons and their mates.

I had hoped to like Owned by Fate more than I did. The tropes that I like in fantasy m/m books are there: dragons/shifters/fae/magic, but after the first third of the book, it dragged on too much. I think that the book definitely could have been shortened and wouldn't have lost the plot at all, the little that there was to begin with.
Also, there was the past relationship that led to misunderstandings and a world of hurt that really built the angst at the beginning of the book. I could have read that for a bit longer, to be honest. Having Corryn sacrificing his life for his love - ugh. SIGN ME UP. I thought that part of the plot ended far too quickly with few meaningful consequences.

One of the biggest issues I had with this book was that the conflict that Micah and Corryn had was resolved the second they get together. There is nothing stopping them once they finally admit to loving each other. They end up sleeping together for the majority of the remaining pages. And then, to add to the nonsensical amount of sexy times they have, there are multiple orgies thrown into the mix. I doubled checked the synopsis and there is no mention of the more kinkier aspects to the book that some readers may not enjoy.

Also, and I am being a bit picky on this point, but why is it that ALL the brothers found male soulmates that all seemed to be the same type of size and personality? A. It was confusing for someone who hadn't read any of the previous books in the series, and B. It made the who thing more unbelievable than the dragons... at least one of them should have been the anomaly with a female soulmate - but then the group sessions wouldn't have been nearly as fun now would they?

That being said, I still love the pacing of Sean Michael's books and will continue to read them in the future.

Final notes:
- Told in alternating third person
-
- Slightly kinky sex - spanking
- Soulmates
- Magic
- Tattoos
- Near-death episode (sacrificial)

I really wanted to like this book being that I've not yet read a gay dragon shifter romance novel but it had a lot of problems. The first problem was that it was hard to tell who was talking or thinking in the dialog parts. Next was a lot of unanswered questions- the biggest being are all dragons gay?
There was an awful lot of very repetitive sex scenes, I'm all for sex scenes but change up the action a bit please.
I did enjoy the scene where Mike and Corryn fly for the first time, great descriptors.

I enjoyed the second chance aspect of the storyline but some of it did cone off as unnecessarily angsty. I personally liked the sexy times between Mike and Corryn, I also enjoyed seeing the other brothers from the previous books. There were some instances of wrong name usage and other editing errors but I'm hoping they will be fixed in the finished product. All in all a very enjoyable read.
