It's against the law for elves and humans to fall in love. But laws can be broken.

When Venick is caught wandering the elflands, he knows the penalty is death. Desperate, he lies about his identity in hopes the elves will spare his life.

Ellina doesn't trust the human, and not merely because he speaks the language of men. Men lie. In elvish, however, lying is impossible. In a moment of intuition, Ellina decides to give Venick a chance: learn elvish, reveal his truths, and she will set him free.

That is not, of course, what happens.

As Ellina and Venick grow to know one another, their feelings start to shift. Then Venick uncovers a dark secret, and suddenly the fate of the elflands seems to rest in his hands. But every choice comes with consequences, and Venick must decide if it's worth risking his life to protect a race that hates him, all to save an elf he's not allowed to love.

Magic, love and fate collide in this fantasy adventure from S.G. Prince. For readers who love fast-paced action with a side of romance, Elvish is the first novel in the Elvish Trilogy.

I’m a character-driven SFF author who writes about magic, found family, and forbidden love. Enemies to lovers is my trope. Romance is my favorite genre to read, though I'm trying to branch out. I was born in Ohio, spent a few childhood years in Missouri, grew up in Florida, and have since lived in Fort Worth, Seattle, San Francisco and now the East Bay. I bake sourdough on Wednesdays and dessert on Fridays. I’m a hobby photographer. I have two distinct writing styles, one serious (adult), one goofy (YA), which basically reflects who I am as a person. My favorite words are always, surrender and headlong. S is my least favorite letter.

As I been reading the reviews, I was wondering what's in this book? As the blurb says it's about forbidden love, magic, fate and choices.

It's a good read. The story is spontaneous, some banters are humorous and quite an adventure. It was like reading that you know what will happen next but ends up somewhere.

Choices are difficult but sometimes we have to do it. Because in the end, our decisions yesterday will make up the present and the future of our tomorrow.

Elvish follows the story of the human Venick and an elf named Ellina who seem, at first, to be enemies. Ellina is sworn to kill any human who wanders into the elflands, but surprisingly (and for reasons we later uncover), when she discovers Venick on the wrong side of the border, she chooses to let him live.

When I wrote Elvish, I wanted a story that combined the best of fantasy and romance. I wanted twists and intrigue, but I also wanted a plot that was heavily character-driven. It's what I enjoy reading and, subsequently, what I like to write. It's better, isn't it, when characters have self-doubt, when they fall in love slowly, and when they emerge on the other end stronger than they were before? That was the aim with Elvish, anyway, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

This was a captivating read; I loved the intricate character relationships and unexpected plot twists. The story primarily revolves around Ellina and Venick, and the dynamics between them provided a strong emotional core to the story. I appreciated the gradual build of trust to friendship between them.

The element of deception and betrayal added a layer of suspense and intrigue to the plot. Venick's feeling of being lied to and betrayed by Ellina, and vice versa, created a compelling conflict that kept me turning the pages.

The biggest surprise in the story for me was the revelation of the true antagonist. The twist involving Queen Rishiana subverted expectations in a satisfying way.

I enjoyed it very much and look forward to continuing to the next book in the series. I am invested in Ellina and Venick and want to see how their story develops.

Edit: I've read Elvish twice now, and just to help those of you who are undecided, (firstly, READ THIS BOOK) but second, I just wanted to say that you'll love this book if you love:

- Beautiful writing
- A strong female lead (without being overdone)
- Character-driven plot
- An unpredictable twist (actually there are two)
- Really well developed characters

Okay, that's all! :)

--

The description for this book was what first definitely had me intrigued, and I'm glad to say I really loved this one! I think the author's writing style is so wonderful and they make it so easy to feel for the characters!!

The story starts out with the male lead, who is a human man, when he is caught in the elven forest by the elves. We learn that this man (named Venick) is an outlaw and was banished for a murder, and now is basically just trying to survive. Then there's Ellina, the main female elf, who decides to save his life rather than kill him.

If you love stories that combine romance, mystery, danger and magic, this is a story that you will most likely greatly enjoy. The world-building is unique. The writing is BEAUTIFUL. Seriously this book is so well written. Also, the war between the two sides is intriguing and interesting. For a fantasy, there weren't as many characters as I expected (maybe like five main ones) but I actually enjoyed that a lot because I really got to know the characters that were in there! Mainly Venick and Ellina. I love them!

I already can't wait for the next in the series!

3 Stars!!

I enjoyed the idea of this book.

I wasn't blown away or anything. There were parts I liked, but honestly - I struggled with it at times. It had holes and it also felt like it was dragging until about the 80% mark and then I started to feel a little invested.

I think I will give the second book a try because it sounds like the writer took constructive criticism and did a little better job on the second, so I am willing to give it a shot just because of how my interest was peaked by the end of this one. Fingers crossed!

I gave this book a good shot, got about 60% through and realized I was pulling teeth trying to read it. This is a DNF for me. The author is a great writer, I was hooked into the world and characters right away and I love her narrative voice. When it started to chafe was 3 days after knowing each other, the main characters, Venick and Ellina, both start having very shoehorned thoughts of romance about one another. It started out feeling disconnected. Like their spoken and acted interactions were one story but the internal dialogue was a different story being told.

[spoilers]There was tension in their spoken interactions, a slowly loosening distrust, that sedately paced what I would call a budding/tolerant friendship, and fight scenes and near escapes in the action interactions. Internally? Both of these clowns seemed to be fighting a torrential downpour mudslide of "Must. Not. Fall. Head. Over. Heels! Gah! I want her/him so badly!" that came out of nowhere. And it was rooted in nothing. Venick seemed to have a fetish for elves and killing them( because that's what happens when they make out with humans, they get killed by their own kind) but try to actually force him to describe what he likes about Ellina? "She took care of me that one time and did not kill me all the multiple times she had a chance. Also, I miss my dead ex-elf girlfriend, who got killed for kissing me, a LOT. Romance!" You're ridiculous, man. And I cannot find a reason Ellina gave for being so magnetically drawn to Venick. She had a serious case of "fated to f***" that made her stupid, which was unfortunate because she was a smart and capable woman. Like, even if you're being overpowered by your emotions for somebody, you can at least articulate why they deserve you being rash and foolish for them. Otherwise , it comes off as airheaded, "There's just something about him that makes me wanna reject everything I know and defy my people at the cost of my dignity and self-respect." I'm not even a raging feminist and even I found her lack of autonomy irritating.

And 60% of the book, nothing happens. No, seriously, people mill about from different points and all we're left with is,

"North elves and south elves are at war.
Those south elves sure are acting suspiciously antagonistic.
Oh. Yep. They're planning to attack the north."

It's almost like we're at war or something. And we needed to go through 6 location moves and 3 costume changes to get there. I guess looking back, that plot summary does feel flimsy: Venick, a human in elven territory gets picked up by elves instead of killed and taught to speak elvish even though he already knows it, secretly. It feels like a premise where nothing is supposed to happen except the relationship. But even My Fair Lady goes into the intricacies and interactions between the characters during the language lessons, to you know, show them being charming and silly with each other. S.G. Prince sweeps over those parts, giving us nothing real to cling to. I wouldn't have minded so much if she put the time in and showed me the building romance instead of playing opposite games jumping from internal dialogue to outer dialogue.

I would have overlooked the pure angst and stupidity of not only elven culture but the premise of the war. But since it wasn't handled strongly, I'm forced to bring up everything because it's glaringly obvious now. Like Ellina's bondmate, Rannan(I forget the spelling, sorry) is a freaking moron. So, bondmates are forced together, even when they don't like each other, because elves are dumb, infertile creatures that refuse to breed unless you chain them together. Except not even that works because Ellina is all but married to this guy and refuses to give him any(so, if she can choose not to bed him, then why are they forced together? I sense a fatal flaw in your breeding program)

So, he thinks he's being a super awesome commander by "allowing" Ellina to frequently break the rules and defy him in front of his troop JUST so he can beat her and punish her for it, because he's simultaneously blowing off steam and frustration for her blue balling him. And he's a sadist, apparently. Way to ingratiate yourself to your beloved. I'm sure she feels all sorts of willing after getting tied to a tree and whipped; all of a sudden, after all of that, Ellina sees things your way and wants to make the hard-to-make babies with you. Or how about your troop? Yeah, you know, the guys who follow you out of respect for your authority, watching you not only smugly allow her to talk back to you, like a submissive boyfriend, but then later get real, down and dirty and petty about it by brutally beating the woman you're supposed to be having children with. And I can't imagine what sort of mental gymnastics they have to go through, "I know how he is with you," to accept that he's physically harming a woman who he is trying to get pregnant for the imperative of their race out of spite OR because he enjoys it. It's like Rannan is such a huge idiotic sadist because the plot needed an asshole or something. [/spoilers]

S.G. Prince is a great writer but I was very disappointed in this. Someone told her after reading the book that the later coupling between the main leads(assuming there is one) came out of nowhere. So, all she did was went back through and added a lot of angsty, passionate thoughts between them without actually changing the demonstrable chemistry they should have. Either that or someone convinced her to make it a romance last minute and she thought that meant "sometimes two people just really wanna bone and they don't know why."

This book is really good. There were some parts near the end I maybe felt like I just had to get through, but overall I'd recommend giving it a go. Despite the fact that there are elves, this isn't anything like LOTR. It's high-fantasy but like in the "softer" range, so if you like books with some fantasy but not too much (if that makes sense), this is a good in-between. It's called a romantic fantasy, but the romance doesn't overpower the story. I mean, yeah, the main characters do spend a lot of time musing about each other, but there's a lot more that happens too. And for those of you wondering, theres nothing explicit in here relationship wise. Venick and Ellina's relationship stems from common goals, and these are just two awesome, fierce characters. I liked Venick especially. His inner "voice" was so entertaining and a breath of fresh air. I also loved the tension and inner conflict the characters experience. The whole book is engaging. I'll be reading the sequel when it comes out.

Finished all of it, despite being extremely romance-heavy. I loved the first half, but it gradually became a generic soap opera, where characters fail to TALK TO EACH OTHER and therefore we get a ton of misunderstandings and slow pacing. I can't believe how many times do we have to get characters hating each other due to lack of communication. Despite the creative setting and politics, this ended up being one of the most predictable books for me this year. What I'm trying to say is - I dislike 99% of fictional romance and this was the wrong book for me.

“In love. Insane.” Dourin tilted his hands back and forth as if balances on a scale. “Same difference.”

Romantic, surprising, politically intriguing, and with a dash of magic too! This book certainly grabbed my attention. I could only ask for a bit more pace, which is where I expect this is going. I'll have to come back to see.

Plot- Loved the plot and world building.

Writing great!

Characters- I liked the FMC and the MMC.

Romance- Good chemistry.
Their relationship felt authentic and had a natural, albeit maybe a little quick, transition from allies to more. I like the obstacles to their relationship, and I also really liked how miscommunications never lingered too long.

Content-

Language- No swearing.
Spice- Some kissing. Def clean.
Cover- great
POV- dual POV
Cliffhanger- yes
Format- - audiobook via Hoopla
Narration- - good!

How I rated the series-
Book 1, “Elvish” - 4 stars
Book 2, “Elder” - 3 stars
Books 3, “Ember” - 2 stars

Not as good as I hoped. The world building is good, with northern and southern Elves and a war brewing between them. A couple of twists in the story held my interest, but other things I found lacking. For example, I didn't feel any chemistry between Venick and Ellina. The romance is slow building and dangerous, since love between Elves and humans are strictly forbidden, but I felt nothing reading about their feelings for each other. The pacing of the story was also on the slow side, and not until the end things started to perk my interest again. It certainly has potential, but I'm not sure if I will continue this series or not.

This book was okay. I really like how the elves aren’t just prettier people unlike a lot of fantasy novels. They are a different species altogether, so it makes sense that they’d act differently and have different mannerisms.

I didn’t like certain parts, it kinda drug on at times. And there was so much repetition and overthinking. And all of the war planning stuff was so uninteresting.

And I wasn’t a fan of the ending. Now I HAVE to read the next one and I wasn’t sure I wanted to. Maybe it’ll make up for it… it seems to be headed in a good direction. We’ll see.

Interesting. I wasn’t expecting that ending, but here we are.
The notion that one cannot lie in the language of elves is not a new one, but I have to say that I really did like how much was stressed on this rule of language. The characters were distinct, and I liked how the characters were mostly able to puzzle through the events that surrounded them. Decent chemistry, even if I’d have liked to know more of the secondary characters.

This was a little bit of everything—the good, the bad, and everything in between.

I think I will give the rest of this series a shot, even though I'm annoyed about the elvish race in general and the protagonist's age. The writing was fine.

The elves in this world aren't artists, they're no magicians, they're not strategists, and they can't swim (random enough, but important for the plot)—which begs the question: What do they do with all their time?!? They also avoid committed relationships (marriage and children), which led to too many interracial relationships, because elves preferred human lovers, as they have the lifespan of a mayfly and half-breed offspring is not possible. Love between elves and humans is forbidden now...
Elven society seems terrible and appears to be nothing but a plot device at this point.

Venick fought in a war, met and lost a great love, and was exiled for murder. He is also a better strategiest than Ellina (and all the other elves). All that, and he's still in his twenties.

I'm doing a book bingo in Fantasy/SciFi 2020. One square was romantic fantasy/paranormal. This became a good choice, beaucause sexual relationship and their consequences for society was the main theme. It wasn't just a love story in the midst of other stuff. Some complained that the female lead wasn't perfect, but neither was the man. Someone else didn't like that they didn't immediately talk about their feelings and what they wanted. Even if it was written that they didn't know themselves.

If it's going to be realistic the leads can't be perfect. I likes that. A main part was their budding relationship and that fit with what I was supposed to read. I also likes that didn't immidiately love or hate it each over. Their opionions and feelings changed with what happened, which is also more realistic.

I found the more negative descriptions of elves, to make them the other. I will propably read more in this series.

NO, JUST NO... :(

These reviews are supposed to be honest and my heart breaks because I had extremely high hopes for this series. This was one of the first series I wanted to read when I first started back reading in Feb. I bought all 3 books together but unfortunately, I have no desire to read the other two. I will, however, pass these on to my sister to read.

Human Venick is found on Elven land and the penalty for a human found on Elven territory is death but when he is found by a small army of elves which includes female elf Ellina, she has a change of heart. She still struggles to trust him and him trust her and as she travels with him, teaching him the elven language and ways, unexpected feelings start to form. Soon Venick will discover a secret that will threaten those feelings and the fate of the elflands rest in Venick's hands.

You have your romance, your drama, mystery etc. But it was just so drawn out and actually painfully hard to finish. The way this was written was so repetitive. A point, made from 3 different perspectives. First, a thought then verbally and then questioned. I am not going to read the other two books in this trilogy and that saddens my heart. I've never been one to not finish a series or triology. :(

I just wanted to say I can't believe people are not talking about this! It was insanely good.
*
Venick thought he was ready for death's embrace, that is, until he is found roaming the forbidden elflands and realizes life is not something he is willing to let go of. In his desperation, he lies about who he truly is hoping the elves will spare his life.
Ellina does not believe nor trust the human. It's simple: humans are born liars. In elvish, however, it's impossible to lie, so Ellina decides to go against her better judgement and teach Venick her language, believing she will find out his truth and, eventually, set him free.
But as time passes and they get to know each other, their perspectives change. As things start getting complicated, Venick unearths a secret that would mean destruction for those he cares about, and he will have to decide if saving a race that loathes him is worth the risk, particularly because the elf he loves was never meant to be in his life.

Finished copy provided to me by author S. G. Prince in exchange for my honest review.
*
First of all, I would like to thank S. G. Prince for sending this beauty my way, thanks for giving me the opportunity to read and review your book!
When the author of Elvish contacted me asking if I would be interested in reading her debut romance/fantasy novel and after seeing the absolutely stunning cover and reading the description, I excitedly said yes! What is not to love about elves, romance and fantasy?
The writing is gorgeous, it's so good in fact, I can't believe this is the author's debut novel. This, lovely people, is how all books should be written. S. G. Prince managed to imbue the narrative with a rich and descriptive background as well as amazingly thought out characters.
The story is character driven and it is thanks to this we truly get to know Venick and Ellina. The first one hundred and fifty pages give us information about the main characters past and everything they have gone through, but make no mistake, because once we come across the first plot twist, things really take off.
Venick is absolutely precious; he is thoughtful, selfless, smart and pretty much an expert in battle. But do you want to know what his best feature is? He is emotionally articulate *gasp*. You heard that right! He is not afraid to feel and express deep emotions, and I have to admit that is quite possibly my favorite quality about him. I love the way the author managed to create a character so pure and endearing in his vulnerability, even more so since our society has been ruled by the unfair expectation that men who show any sort of emotion are weak. So basically, in my humble opinion, Venick must be protected at all costs.
Ellina is driven and knows exactly what she wants. I loved getting to know about her people's traditions and her heartbreaking past, as well as the resilient manner in which she has managed to overcome her obstacles and come out triumphant. Both Venick and Ellina showed great promise in regards to their character, but Ellina achieved a bigger growth, in my opinion.
The romance is swoon worthy and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! It's slow burning and absolute perfection and although I do wish we had glimpsed a little bit more of it, I have high hopes for the sequel. These two characters are meant to be together, live a happy, fruitful life, and have beautiful and smart babies. Enough said.
I absolutely loved Elvish and I am being completely honest when I say I can not wait for the sequel (the cliff hanger is real). I am giving this beauty all the stars!

Prepare to be completely engulfed in the world of Elvish.

From the very beginning the author does an incredible job at setting the scene and making it so easy to see her vision and her settings.

Elvish is a fantasy story told from a split POV between main characters Venick and Ellina. Venick, a human man, is struggling with banishment from his home for falling in love with an elf. A crime among both of their people. He is desperately seeking a way to redeem himself in the eyes of his mother and return to the mainlands. Ellina, an elf woman, is strong and powerful and dedicated to her country and fighting for all things that she is told are the right ways. Fates bring these two together and we find out that they may be more connected to each other then they originally think.

What I personally loved about this story is we don't get the typical damsel in distress waiting for her prince to save her. Instead, the female role goes to a bad-ass warrior who is perfectly capable of getting by on her own.

It was so easy for me to get into the story and stay immersed in the world from start to finish. Never a dull moment and everything flowed together so seamlessly. I can honestly say I was surprised by the twist and did not see that coming one bit.

Can't wait for Elvish #2 to read to continuation of this beautiful story. Definitely worth the read and one that everyone will be wanting to talk about!

****4.25 stars****

This is my first read by this author and it may even be her first book but I quite enjoyed it.

Elvish is a wonderfully, refreshing fantasy tale that involves rich storytelling, action, darkness, romance, confusion, anger and above all lying; lots and lots of lying.

Venick is a human who has been in exile for years. He's also starving. So he ventures into Northern elf territory to find food, stumbles upon a mama bear and a bear trap and gets caught in it. Ellina and her troop finds Venick and saves him from the mama bear and the bear trap. However, penalty for crossing the border is death. Ellina is ready to kill Venick but he convinced her he has valuable information for the northern elves about their queen so he's spared.

The bargain is two sided. Venick can live but he has to learn Elvish in the time it takes to get to the northern city because the language has some sort of mystical magic where the speaker cannot lie when they speak in Elvish. What Ellina doesn't know is that Venick is fluent in Elvish but this is his life on the line so he pretends.

They end up traveling together and over the course of the travels they learn more about each other and the relationship begins to blossom especially considering they keep saving each other from Southern elves who have their own nefarious plans. Both Ellina and Venick have secrets ad they are both accomplished liars so it becomes complicated the longer they travel together and feelings start to get involved.

The story reads almost like poetry and it sucked into a really intriguing world of enemies, rules, lies and love. Very much looking forward to the sequel and learning the fates of both Venick and Ellina.

This book was read as part of a "read a book you dnf'd previously" prompt. If you look at my dnf list you'll see that my options were extremely limited so I went with the one that I thought I would be able to get through the quickest and with the least amount of pain.

If I'm being completely honest, there's nothing overly wrong with Elvish, it just really didn't work for me. I didn't connect with the characters, their motives, the world, anything. I don't generally tend to enjoy reading books from a male POV and I didn't realise going into this book that this would be the narrative.

I listened to this through audiobook and I can't lie, but Raffan speaking was my favourite part of the entire thing. The tone that the narrator took while reading his parts reminded me of Jeremy Irons as Scar. If you know me, you'll know that Scar is one of my favourite Disney villains and has my favourite song in The Lion King (so the voice plays a massive part in my love). It made me feel a bit gross that I enjoyed hearing him speak, especially given what he was saying ...

I really, really liked this book! I devoured it pretty early in the month and looked at the rest of the series to buy. The second book is already released, with the third and final coming out this summer. Because of that, I decided to wait to read the next one, since I didn't feel like I needed to know IMMEDIATELY what was going to happen. And even if I did, I was going to have to wait until at least this summer to find out completely 😂

Of course, after doing all that, the second book magically appeared on my Kindle. I freaked out, wondering how on earth I'd managed to get it without paying. After searching and almost messaging the author, I discovered that Amazon had lent me a copy because I am a Prime member. Crisis averted, and, hey! Free books.

Limited number of themes available when it comes to romance. This storyline seems to be a riff on Romeo and Juliet however here the female is in the power position. Elves and humans are mortal enemies in this fantasy series. Vanick is trapped and wounded but rather than leave him to die or finish him off Ellina nurses him back to health even though the act puts her life at risk with her own people.

Alas this book is only the first of planned trilogy the second volume yet to be published. The book has a cliffhanger ending that gave us a snapper ending that left everything up in the air. I enjoyed the book but I don’t like being manipulated.

Nope.

The writing style got on my nerves. There was this CONSTANT pattern of writing a descriptive sentence, then reframing in short form for dramatic effect, then again reiterating the same point in a third sentence. I couldn't help but hear Trump in my mind as a narrator as a result. *shudder*

The romance seemed seriously unhealthy. A couple strangers who seem way too head-over-heels than they should be after a few short months. Borderline creepy. DNF at 44%.
