Earth Online - a virtual MMORPG that takes place in the future year of 2190 - a game that everyone will bet their futures on. Set in a map that is ten times the size of real-world Earth, players battle for supremacy in the first game to feature personal adventure, territory construction, and grand warfare. For every death you experience in the game, your level would drop back to zero. Ouyang Shuo, an above average player, suffered the ultimate betrayal. For merely a piece of equipment, his sworn brother betrayed and backstabbed him. This time, after he reincarnated in the game, Ouyang Shuo swore to exact vengeance. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Ouyang Shuo found himself back five years before the betrayal - right before the launch of Earth Online. This time, armed with the knowledge from his past life, Ouyang Shuo would venture upon a new path. How to perfectly complete quests? What historical battle maps would appear? How should one build up their territory? Utilizing the experience from the predecessors of his last life, Ouyang Shuo makes his bid for the top against all odds. Follow his journey as he seeks to lord over the world! A different kind of tale that blends historical characters and virtual reality gaming, with heavy emphasis on kingdom building and warfare. DNF at chapter 35/1356. So far there are already a few young, pretty female characters appearing around the main character, and somehow they all have crushes on him. Very trite. The village building can be interesting enough but it's also pretty dry so far, like reading a report. I'm sure the exciting plot points will appear later when they MC come into direct conflict with the other major players, but I don't have enough interest at the moment.
Pretty good translation and editing a bit better than normal, but still a bit rough. The story is more complex than the blurb. Not new, but almost didn't read it due to the blurb. Story caught and kept my attention.
12.8.2020 - 4,5* (review completed novel, all 1356 chapters)
It's not 100 %, but for such a mamoth of a work I'll give it high score.
It has interesting concept.
It plotted the story really well.
Yes, it was simplified in places but if the story was more detailed and complicated, it would be dry historical game of guess, not entertaining story. So there is that.
I am not familiar with history of China and other eastern countries so I can't say anything about accuracy of that. But it sounded legit for me (even if biased toward China) and fullfiled the fun aspect that the story should have so it was ok.
The biggest plus is MC and his views. He was modern man, had good head on his shoulders, wasn't racist (just biased. But what author wouldn't be?) and his opinions about women were gold, especially in CN. He truly respected them.
He was caring and diligent about his family too. That was amazing.
The translation quality was pretty much top notch. That had to be such a pain in ***. My respect to the translators.
When one gloss over the Chinese supremacy undertones in the story, occasional tiny plot holes and slight deux ex machina from time to time, when one takes it as purely entertainment, it was fun. ^^
This is a book based on a virtual MMORPG with the focus being kingdom building. It is a fun and a lite read having tons of original cool ideas but does suffer from all the bad points of online novels - lack of characterization, story flow and plotting.
My review is for all 1356 chapters of the Web Novel.
The way it goes about kingdom building is fantastic, from one man army to building an empire. Bringing in ancient legendry figures adds to the historical charms, the sceneries played out in changing the results of the ancient battlefield was another stroke of genius. My major complaint is it was written in Chinese for the local audience so the focus is China and its history. A version with multiple POV from different countries would have given it a broader appeal.
