One man leaves the life of a lawman behind him and works to clean up a new area in space.

On the planet now known as High Tortuga, the mine workers are far too close to being slaves so the ruler of the planet shut them down.

Except for the mine owned by Venfirdri Lan.

He's taken his mine off the grid and decided to keep everything running. With no need to pay the workers, profits should be good.

After all, who's going to stop him?

He had no idea there was a new type of man working for justice on the planet.

A man named Barnabas.

In fact, he didn't even know who Barnabas was. But he's about to.

Barnabas may not be Ranger One anymore, but one thing definitely has not changed: when someone screws over the powerless, Barnabas is going to bring the pain. With a bloodthirsty AI running his advanced spaceship, those who love evil should start looking over their shoulders.

Life just got a lot more fun.

About the author

Natalie Grey

Natalie Grey grew up in rural New England, surrounded by a lot of vegetables and relatively little excitement. Therefore, she was obliged to make up excitement by pretending to be a knight, mage, jet-setting international assassin, jedi, or (occasionally) a shape-shifting dragon. She read everything she could get her hands on, from Lord of the Rings to Modesty Blaise, and eventually started writing her own stories full of what-ifs and snarky put-downs. Now she lives with her two German Shepherd mixes in the frozen wilds of Minnesota, and does a lot of inventive swearing while she shovels.

Vigilante
By Natalie Grey and Michael Anderle
This was an entertaining story of a guy who wants to clean up the wrongs in the town. His interactions with his ship's AI is very witty. That's what carried the book.

Write more and faster!

I have to say that this has to be one of my favorite books in this world that has been created by Michael Anderle and his co-authors. It is a fantastic read and I laughed out loud several times while reading this book. I love reading a book that makes you feel like you can actually hear the characters speaking in your mind and you can see what the author is describing. This book does all of that and more. Please keep writing these stories so we can all have a joyful visit to the Kurtherian Gambit world again.

I enjoyed every page of this book. Barnabas and Shinigami were fantastic and so funny. Barnabas wanted to get this planet right again and Shinigami wanted to level it with missiles and flamethrowers. She did get to use her missiles but not the flamethrower, lol. Some of the creatures that inhabited the planet were awesome but especially Ubuara, who was a monkey and had a transplant of some kind so Barnabas could understand her.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 6 times.

As for the narration: As much as I like Scott Brick, Jay Snyder, Napoleon Ryan, Eric Dove and a few others, I can honestly say that Chris Andrew Ciulla was the BEST narrator I'd ever listened to. His expressions, his drollness, his smartassness, everything he said was just fantastic.

This was such a perfect voice for Barnabas!

His duty to Justice was shown truly in this book - also his humour, and that sneakiness he has in everything he does!

I really loved reading this first book of the Vigilante Chronicles, and being introduced to new types of aliens, and I really look forward to seeing how Barnabas, Shinigami, and now Gus, too, get on with their fight for Justice.

I just looked at my reading list again, and see that I'm hopping back to book two of the Ascension Myths: Activated, next, which will be a nice treat, though I'll be coming back here just after that.

I am so very spoilt for choice in this Universe of choices, and am pleased every single time I start a new book in it.

It's awesome!

Whether you're a fan of KGU, Michael Anderle &/or Natalie Grey's other books, or are simply looking for a great sci-fi/fantasy read; this book is for you! You don't need to know these characters or the worlds for this to be a good staring point. Fully fleshed out characters & a wonderful plot will keep you reading! If you're already a KGU fan, digging into the story of Barnabas & Shinigami is a treat, full of insight & plenty of laughs! It kept me up well past my bedtime, on a couple of occasions!

Five out of five.

This book was great, I read it in one sitting that’s how much I enjoyed it. The pacing was very well done the Book had plenty of action, humor, and a different writing style i.e. very little profanity. The action was well spaced and there was plenty of it. The humor between Barnabas and his ship was laugh out loud funnyIf you like a protagonist who can get down and dirty you will enjoy this book. I am hoping that it sells well and that I am eagerly awaiting the next book

The Lone Ranger Is No Longer ALone

Barnabas is no longer Ranger One for the Etheric Empire, but he retains his hatred of injustice. It is interesting to see him struggle with control so that he does not go overboard in punishing the guilty and end up harming the innocent. I like the action and snarky dialogue. The discourse between Barnabas and his ship's AI is priceless. I look forward to the next book.

Another gem in the Kurtherian crown!

Natalie Grey is one of my favorite authors in one of the most engaging fiction universes. Her blend of action and humor built on the foundation of well rounded, complex characters kept me engrossed. I love the creative aliens with unique personalities and physiology and how they interact. I hated for this book to end and am anxious for more!

Barnabas for the win

I really enjoyed getting to know more about Barnabas in this book. I hope future book a continue to give us glimpses of his past while he continues to grow. I really enjoyed his interactions with the AI. She is a hoot. Overall a great book on it's own or as an addition to the KGU.

The wabbit collective concurs bigly

No I’ve never seen nor heard of wabbits in the Kurthurian universe. Yet. Barnabas may, in his walkabout ‘out der’, possibly encounter 1 . Any relationship with earth wabbits, I’ve no idea. I’ve got to hand it to Barnabas here on planet Devon, he manages ‘some self control ‘. What dat control is, you’ll have to get this book.

Natalie has officially joined the Kurtherian Universe with an excellent book.

This is the start of a series with Barnabas as the star. It is a very good book as it captures the essence of Ranger One, and it gives the Kurtherian fan more insight into Barnabas, the vampire monk. Damn good book and I can't wait until the next book in the series comes out.

I wasn't sure I would like this new series. It started out slow and didn't seem to speed up as it went along. THEN I realized I was reading about Barnabas, written as notes of his new adventures. That made all the difference in the world! I love Barnabas, he's just so smooth with past fears buried deep. Like jumping off a 50 foot cliff into 10 feet of water (I've done that, it's crazy good). I can't wait for the next one!!

What a great book 1!

Having read all there is to read in the vast Kurtherian and Oriceran pantheon I am so happy to see Barnabas get a series. The interplay between he and Shinigami is priceless! Justice is coming to the outer reaches of the universe. Also happy to see Trials and Tribulations 3 is coming soon - it’s been too long!

Barnabas is Back 5 stars for the authors

So glad to see this new series with TKG’s infamous Ranger One. While Barnabas is no longer a ranger he is going to make sure justice prevails on his queen’s planet. Action packed, with a snarky AI it’s a fun ride. You can start this series with out having read anything else in this universe but why would you want to do that?

2nd time around

I read this book a couple years ago, and it was good then and better now, atleast for me it is, reading for me is more than looking at words on a page it's more about understanding the nuances of the books style and it's characters thank you to the authors for sharing your world

I'm not sure if the idea was to affect a Douglas Adams-style absurdist tone with the same 'witty' dialogue. Whatever the intent the result fell flat for me. I found the prose to be clumsy, the plot meandering and the scope of the story to be too narrow and poorly outlined.
That said there is a sense of fun in this story that might appeal to some. Don't be afraid to give it a shot.

Another good story line is born

Spinning off Barnabas is a great idea. He didn't get enough face time in the BA books. It is also great to have another SO Shinigami to fall in love with. Looking forward to more of these.

Great read

I think this is the best one of Natalie Grey's books I've read to date. I "growled" at my family not to interrupt me. I didn't want to put it down. It's another great addition to the Kurtherian Universe.

Finally a well written and enjoyable story.

The story line moved along smartly without distracting backstories. All characters supported the story. A pleasurable read which I recommend to all

Meh

DNF. I didn't realize that M. Anderle was also part of the writing team. This is part of his crazy universe and I don't like his series, so I bailed. It's far better than his original but the original left a bad taste in my mind.

It might not be too bad but I'll never know.

Really enjoyed this book

Have been enjoying all of the various kutherian universe books, and it is nice to see this backstory filled out, as I already read some of the others related to Devon. Look forward to reading the rest.

Very enjoyable

A welcome KGU addition and i do think the collaboration of Ranger 1 and Shini as they move out into the frontiers suits the old wild west ideal and of course the teaching of an AI does add to a fair amount of smiles.
Looking forward to more adventures.

A definite must read series!!

Yesssss, a whole series about one of my favourite characters, Barnabas and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. In fact, his sense of justice and old fashioned values makes this a more interesting read. Bring on book 2

Good fun!

Wonderful story with so much imagination going into the characters, they're incredible! As always, I laughed out loud and smiled throughout the rest, so much that my cheeks are probably stuck like that. Love this world and these entwined series!

Vigilante

Woohoo! Ranger One in action. Love the direction this new series is taking. Mix in a few new characters, a somewhat flawed AI and justice is served. Pepsi anyone?
