Concepts of Modern Physics
This text is written for a one-semester Modern Physics course and is designed for students who already have a grounding in basic physics and calculus. Relativity and quantum ideas are cosidered first to provide a framework for understanding the physics of atoms and nuclei. The theory of the atom is then developed, with emphasis on quantum-mechanical notions. This is followed by a discussion of the properties of aggregates of atoms, which includes a look at statistical mechanics. Finally, atomic nuclei and elementary particles are examined. New features include: second colour for emphasis; twice as many photographs; twice as many worked examples; and 25% more questions.

Arthur Beiser studied physics and received his PhD from New York University , where he later became an associate professor of physics. He was a Senior Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, where he focused on cosmic rays and magnetohydrodynamics in geophysics and astrophysics . He worked both theoretically and experimentally, taking part in expeditions to the observation of cosmic rays and magnetic phenomena to Alaska and the Pacific.
He is a Fellow of the Explorers Club and chaired the Explorers Club's Committee on Space Exploration .
Beiser is known for numerous physics textbooks, but also published books on geology and sailing (he is a passionate sailor who sailed around Cape Horn and twice crossed the Atlantic in his sailing boat). His wife Germaine Beiser is also an author and co-author of physics textbooks.

It is a good book on modern physics for undergraduates. Provides useful insights on nuclear physics,solid state, special relativity.
Treatment of Quantum mechanics was not up to the mark, I felt something fishy in the approach towards it.
p.s.: Modern Physics for Scientists and Engineers is a much better book, by the way.

॥ সূর্য্য কাদঁলে ফক্কা ॥
[ তখন কিনা অপরাহ্ন। দুপুরে গলা অবধি গিলে মানকে সবে পাথরটাতে হেলান দিয়ে বসেছে; পাশে তাদের গাড়িটাও রোদ জমা করছে, যতটা পারছে। তাদের ফ্যামিলির এই গাড়িটা বেশ পুরানো বটে তবে এখনো ভাল টানে। মান্কের শুঁড় থেকে একটা আরামের ঘুর্র ঘুর্র আওয়াজ বেরিয়ে আসছে, অমনি কোথক্কে তার বিধবা পিসী লাফাতে লাফাতে গাড়ির পাশে এসে হাজির...হাতে কিসের সব গাছের চারা-টারা, নিয়ে যাবে বোধহয়... ...
পিসী: (তারস্বরে চেচিয়ে!) মান্কে, এই হতভাগা মান্কে, বলি গেলি কোথায়!
মান্কে (মুখ ও শুঁড় তুলে): আ: বলি হল কি? চোখ দুটো সবে বুইজেছি কি না, চিল-চিৎকার করে...
পিসী: হ্যাঁরে, আলপেয়ে, বলি সূর্য্যির ওজন যে সেকন্ডে 10^9 কেজি করে কমে যাচ্ছে, সে খপর রাখিস! বলি, সুয্যিখানা বন্ধ হয়ে গেলে অন্ধকারে বাড়ি ফিরব কি করে?
মান্কে: ও: পিসী খামোকা বড় হল্লা মাচাও! সূর্য্যির ওজন 10^30 কেজি, ও ক্ষইতে ক্ষইতে আমরা বিটা কলোনী তে পৌছে যাব! যাব তো হুশ করে!
পিসী: বটে? রাস্তায় আলো না থাকলে আমার যেন কেমন অসোয়াস্তি হয়। সেই যে মা ছোটো বেলায় শিখেয়েছিল, কুমু, রাতবিরেতে কোথাও যাবিনি, মেইয়ে তুই, কোথায় কোন শুঁড়ওলা ঘাপটি মেরে থাকে! মার সে কথা আজও ভুলিনি! (দীর্ঘশ্বাস)
মান্কে (বিরক্ত হয়ে): সূর্য্যি ক্ষইলে সব আলো নিভে যাবে, তা কে বললে! তখন সাদা আলো বদলে লাল আলো হবে ক্ষণ। সূর্য্যি ক্ষইলে তার সাইজটাও তো বাড়বে না কি!
পিসী (চার হাত নেড়ে, গজগজিয়ে): লাল হলেই বা কি শুনি! আমি বুড়ো মানুষ, ও ডিমলাইটের মত আলোয় দেখতে পাই নে!
মান্কে: আচ্ছা, আচ্ছা, আমরা তো রওনা দিলাম বলে! গাড়িতে বসব আর হুশ করে আলোর বেগে ছুট দেব...
পিসী (শুঁড় কুচকে): যাব বললেই যেন যাওয়া যায়! গাড়ি হুশ্ করে ছুট দিলেই তো সময় থেমে যাবে, ধীরে চলন দেবে! যেতে কত সময় লাগবে বল দেখিনি!
মান্কে (তেরিয়া ভাবে): আ: খালি ঘ্যান ঘ্যান ঘ্যান! সময় আস্তে হবে তো এখানের, পৃথিবীর হিসেবে। আমরা তো আর গাড়িতে বসে টের পাব না! আর সময় ধীরে গেলে, তোমার বয়সটাও তো কম বাড়বে, তাতে তো দেনা-পাওনা সমানই হল, না কি? ছোটোবেলায় ইন্টারস্টেলার দেখনি? নাও, এবার, শুঁড় তোলো দিকি...
পিসী (গাড়িতে চড়তে চড়তে): আবার কবে বাপ-পেতামোর গ্রহে আসা হবে কে জানে! সূর্য্যিই তো লাল দৈত্য হয়ে খাবে এ গ্রহটাকে। হ্যারে, মান্কে, সেই যে কবে পেমেন মিত্তির লিখেছিল, সূর্য্যি কাঁদলে সোনা, তা সূর্য্যি ক্ষইলে কি সোনা বেরবে?
মান্কে (চোখ বড় করে): ও: পিসী, বুড়ো হলে, তবু সোনার প্রতি লোভ গেল না তোমার? না, সূর্য্যির মত ছোটো তারায় সোনা হয় না, সূর্য্যি পুড়লে খালি ছাই হবে, কার্বন বেরবে, বুঝলে! সোনা শুধু বড় তারাতেই তৈরী হয়। নাও, সরো, স্যুটটা ঠিক করে পর। গাড়ির হ্যাচটা আবার ঢল ঢল করছে, ভাল করে বন্ধ করি...]
মান্কে আর তার বুড়ি পিসী তো হুশ করে উড়ান দিল বিটা কলোনীর দিকে, আর আপনি? সূর্য্যি রেড জায়ান্ট হয়ে পৃথিবীকে গিলে খেতে এখনো বেশ কিছুটা দেরীই আছে। ততদিনে আমরা অন্য কোন গ্রহে বা গ্যালাক্সিতে ঘর বাধতে পারব কিনা, তা তো সময়ই বলবে। আইনস্টাইনের সাধারন আপেক্ষিকতাবাদ বলে যে সময় যার কাছে যে গতিতেই ছুটুক না কেন, আগাম ভবিষ্যৎ দেখার কোন উপায় নেই কারোরই! ফলে আমাদের কাছে বর্তমানটাই সব।
বর্তমানটিকে আচ্ছা কাজে লাগানোর উপায় জ্ঞানার্জন করা। সময়ের, গতির ও এই মস্ত দুনিয়ার নিয়ম জানতে পড়বেন না কি, বেইজারের এই ফিজিক্সের বইটি? খুব সহজ করে লেখা এই বইটি পড়লে, আমি নিশ্চিত, আপনিও দারুন আনন্দ পাবেন।

Concepts of Modern Physics by A. Beiser is one of the best books in the category of Modern physics. It is very useful for graduate and post-graduate physics students. The simple language and clear explanation of concepts are added advantage. The book covers the basics of Relativity, Quantum Physics, Solid-state Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics along with Nuclear and Particle Physics.

Not my very favourite but it is nice book to read before you are starting to read advanced physics books. Most concepts are explained well and easily understood. I love the graphs anyway, as always.

An excellent textbook about modern physics. It emphasizes more on concepts before equations, but still covers the fundamental mathematics (albeit lightly). I'd say this as "academic introductory book" to modern physics.

This book has excellent way of letting readers understand the subject matter. I tried learning Quantum Mechanics from Resnick and Eiseberg book first. However, I found it tough. Then, I stumbled on this book and found it very lucid.

What i like about book is it covers all important topics. What i dont like about this book is more most of the equations no derivations. We have to work our own.
