Stay or go? There’s no such thing as the easy way out.

Jack McKenna should know. Four years ago, while driving girlfriend Ally and best friend Callum home from a concert, they were involved in a horrific car crash. Ally’s life would never be the same and, consumed by guilt, Jack ran. He’s been running ever since.

Moving from town to town, job to job, he found himself doing things he never thought himself capable of. Living in the shadows, he’d rather spend the rest of his life alone than go home and face everyone he left behind.

Until the night he receives a phone call that forces his hand.

With a recent history he’s anxious to keep hidden and a desperate need to somehow make amends, his homecoming will be anything but easy. Does he even deserve a second chance?

Absolution is the first in a series of stand-alone novels in the Absolution series by Amanda Dick. It is contemporary romance at its most confronting - raw, honest and compelling.

:::: FULL REVIEW NOW POSTED ::::

“She needs you — she’s always needed you… You just need to show her that it’s okay to need you too, that you’re not going anywhere.”

I have to say, from the moment I read the blurb, I knew I had to read this book. Second chance romance stories really call to me. I love the emotions involved, I love that the characters have a history, and I love that they have the kind of love that even after the worst hurt and years of separation never lets go.

“Things were perfect one minute, and then suddenly they weren’t. In a split second, their world had come crashing down.”

After a car accident shattered his girlfriend's spine, Jack McKenna disappeared. Desperate to escape the guilt, he spent four years punishing himself for not having the courage to go back to her. Withdrawn from the world, he threw all his remaining energy into the ring. Fighting was the only thing holding him together.

Meanwhile, Ally had been left after the accident with a broken heart and a broken body. The man she loved had abandoned her when she needed him most. And while she didn't blame him for the accident, she took his departure and four years of silence as an unwavering sign that he didn't love her.

But when an unexpected tragedy called Jack back home, he had no choice but to face everything he was running away from -- including the girl he still loved... and that he'd left forever damaged beyond repair.

“Why didn't you call? Or write or email — why didn’t you at least try? Did you even think about me at all?”

“I never stopped thinking about you,” he whispered.

Overall, I'd say the story was quiet and slow building, but in very realistic manner. There was lots of healing, very little angst, and very understandable characters. I was grateful that the author didn't over-dramatize anything. In many ways, this felt like a story that could have really happened.

I really felt like I could understand where both Ally and Jack were coming from. I could feel his nervousness, guilt, and fear about returning home and facing everything he'd left. I could feel her sense of abandonment, balanced out with her strength at having survived this horrific tragedy. And I could feel so clearly that their love was still just as strong as ever, even though they had so much to work through to built back their relationship and the trust that had been broken.

This book was very well put together. There were carefully chosen quotes at the beginning of each chapter that really complimented the story beautifully. It was also written in third person and while it mostly focused on Ally and Jack's perspectives (even in third person), it also showed us some insight into their friends' thoughts -- but always staying relevant to the central story of their relationship.

The story is very character focused. This accident had changed the lives of everyone involved and it showed us how. It showed us their thoughts, fears, mistakes, healing. But as I mentioned, I felt it was very realistically paced. Given the damage that was done, I appreciated the slow healing process.

While there were understandably conflicted characters, this book had no stupid drama. Naturally, not everything went smoothly, but that's life. We all do things we regret, but in the end, it's how we choose to make up for them that counts.

“He felt the pain that poured out of her, a whisper away from being tangible as it filled the air around them. Moving closer, he pulled her to him, holding her close against his chest in a desperate attempt to save them both.”

I really loved the writing. This author has a beautiful, descriptive style that really gets you right into the minds of the character. There were a few times when I felt like the details over shadowed the story but overall, I was very impressed with the writing.

Just so you know, this isn't a super sexy read. Given the extent of her injuries, Ally actually had no feeling left below her waist. This story isn't about the sex, it's about survival, love and their journey back together.

I really have a big soft spot for this kind of story. Something about second chance romances just really gets to me and I love how no two are the same -- some are really sexy, some are more emotional, some are fast paces, others are more quiet -- each one is different. I would describe this one as quiet and slow building, with strong characters, and a relationship I felt very invested in. In order for me to have given it 5 stars, I would have needed a little more intensity, so I'm going to go with 4 on this one. But this is definitely a book that I am so very glad that I decided to read. It really was a beautiful love story.

Rating: 4 stars. Standalone (with epilogue).

When a book starts its opening scene referencing how amazing Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam are, you know you have no other choice but to commit to the story. Immersing myself in Amanda Dick’s Absolution, whilst listening to Pearl Jam’s unique sound and resonating lyrics as background noise; this layered and complex journey was brought to life. With tragedy and heartbreak enveloping the reader from the very beginning, Absolution, Jack and Ally give dimension to the real life intricacies surrounding grief, guilt and love.

“Once upon a time I could control myself”

Jack and Ally are soul mates. In a connection dating over numerous years, it would appear that NOTHING could tear them apart. But when an accident shatters their lives and their future; similar to pieces of shrapnel embedded deep in your skin, the cuts are deep and the pain is unending. Like a dark cloud, consequences are endless and inescapable. Life changing. On separate paths, two broken hearts face an individual journey motivated by different circumstances and different motivations. Mourning their soulmate Ally and Jack believe they are destined to be alone.

“Once upon a time I could control myself”

Following both Jack and Ally’s separate journey of redemption, Amanda Dick also proves her accomplishments as an author by adding in Callum Ferguson as a third main character. Whether on purpose or unintentionally, Callum’s presence in Absolution evolves into a vital piece of the puzzle; tying all loose ends together. Written in third person, Dick flawlessly transitions from person to person, showcasing her ability to whole heartedly explore each characters stance in the story. Through a steady pace; the execution and development of each story line heightens the way that this story and characters resonate with reality. Effortlessly Amanda Dick has brought life, heart and soul to Jack, Ally and Callum, highlighting their individual experiences, their strengths and their flaws with such correctness and meticulousness.

“Once upon a time I could lose myself”

Absolution is perfection. The story told and the lessons learned will tear you apart. Your levels of empathy will be at an all-time high, reminding yourself of all the singular moments that changed the course of your own life. The individual growth is in sync with the all-consuming presence of love and life, reminding readers that Amanda Dick immaculately expresses her passion for matters of the heart and mind.

“Once upon a time I could love myself”

*Note quotes are taken from the Pearl Jam song Once – Which are very significant in the development of this story.

This is a brilliant book. My heart went out for Jack. How can someone deal with so much heartache and grief.
This is the story of Jack and Ally. Their lives are pulled apart after a road traffic accident. To move on they need to forgive themselves but are they able to do it. Jack needs to face what happened. He needs to face the truth. Around every corner it seems as if he hits another bump in the road.
The accident turned Ally's life upside down. She's a strong character and I was so glad she had Callum, Tom and her friends with her.

The author did a really fantastic job of going back and forth to let us know what's happening and what happened in the past.
This book was addictive. I needed to read and find out what happens.
I received this book for a review as part of a blog tour. I really hope it gets more promotion as this was a great story. I'll certainly be recommending it.

I figured that as other authors have rated their own books, why not I? It does feel a little weird, I'll admit.

I'm so glad that others seem to have enjoyed this story and it's life lessons - I am very proud of it.

Go out into the world, little novel, and spread your wings!

In a split second, the world can come crashing down – and sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom before you can begin the climb upward once again. This is a phenomenal story of picking up the pieces and patching yourself back together. “Absolution” is a mature and realistic portrayal of a bittersweet love story between two people separated by a horrible accident, agony, pain and guilt, who struggle to survive as they reach out for that second chance.

This is a new-to-me author and I was impressed with her writing style. She covered some difficult material in a non-overdramatized manner giving this one a “real” feel. The emotions of the characters were front and center throughout. From the highs to the lows and back again, you believed in the genuine love between two broken souls. Joined by a secondary cast that stood solid and strong, the book was an amazing read.

I will definitely be reading some of Amanda Dick's backlist, as well as following anything new she releases.

This is a really hard book for me to review. On one hand, I really enjoyed this story. It was a beautiful story of forgiveness and second chances. Ally was a fantastic character, very strong but also not perfectly so. The way her character was written and the situation she was in seemed very realistic and was quite heartbreaking. I was drawn into this story from the beginning. What I didn't like was that this book seemed a little slow at times and the story seemed to drag out a little too long but the major issue I have is with Jack. I didn't dislike him but I didn't understand his character or his reasoning for his actions. Overall, I did enjoy this book and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

Awww, I absolutely adored this book!!

I'm not overly going to go into the plot of the book because it's explained very well in the synopsis... but what I will say is that this is a beautiful book.

It's not an easy story to read. We are thrown into the accident right from the start and then it's an uphill battle for Jack and Ally from then on.

This is a story about a truly tragic accident. It's about how different people cope with a terrible situation. The mistakes they have made and the impact their choices have on their lives.
It's about Jack trying to make amends for his bad decisions and having to work through the horrific guilt that has plagued him for the last four years.

"After climbing a great hill, one only findsd that there are many more hills to climb." - Nelson Mandela'

It's also about Ally learning how to live with her new life. We see the hard times, the unbearable times and the times when her fortitude shines through!

'Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway." - John Wayne'

We see Jack and Ally work through their issues together and their friends helping them to come through the other side.

So even though I felt miserable whilst reading a lot of this book, it was also so beautiful, I adored it :D

Is there an HEA? -

Wow. This book was emotional, my heart bled for Jack. I wanted nothing more than to reach out, hold him and comfort him. He truly wallowed in the depths of despair.

As for Ally she was amazing, never fragile but rather strong even though she succumbed to a weak moment. The love that she and Jack shared was never lost, love like theirs is never lost, its enduring love and thats what made the story beautiful.

Forgivness is a powerful thing, and so is love. With love and forgivness nothing is ever impossible.

This beautiful book was a 3.75 star read. I loved the plot, the writing and I was drawn into tthis story about pain, guilt, move on with live and absolution. I connected with the characters, I felt them!. But, unfortunately, I didn' t connect with the romantic feelings, I missed passion, fight and warm blood in the love story. Even so, I really liked the story, enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

This is a new edition of this book... the author had to re-publish so it got a makeover! It was a book that I read last year and honestly... the first time I read it I didn't get the same impact from the story as I did this second time. Was it because of the re-writes?? It could be... but, maybe it's because the topic of Absolution is something that's been weighing heavily on my mind lately. Yes, that's probably it... :)
Each of these chapters starts with an inspirational quote... I LOVE it when authors do this... and there were some really good choices that tied in perfectly with the overall story. These were a few that stood out for me the most:

"You cannot find peace by avoiding life.-Virginia Woolf"

This quote defines Jack perfectly. He has a habit of running and attempting to hide from the things he is ashamed and afraid of facing. His choices had dire consequences on his family and friends. He commits an act that most would say is unforgiveable. It wasn't until he finally decided to face his mistakes that he finally begins to see himself as the person he was meant to be. But, first he must find a way to earn the trust and absolution he so desperately needs. But, the person he needs absolution from the most is himself.

"There are four questions of value in life; What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love." -Johnny Depp

This quote definitely defines Callum and Jack's father Tom... the star characters in this book! The sacrifices they both made for Ally were a clear example of love in it's truest form. You just don't give up on those you care about. Tom and his steadfast patience in supporting his son even though Jack's choices must have hurt him deeply. Callum and his driven need to never leave Ally's side. He and Tom saved her in ways that can never be re-paid. Callum won my heart. I was forever on his side throughout this entire book because his feelings of anger and bitterness against Jack were completely justified. He couldn't understand Jack's actions and quite honestly neither could I. He felt abandoned and betrayed by his friend.

"Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars."

This quote defines Ally perfectly. Yes, she has physical scars, but it's the emotional scars that she battles with mostly. The feelings of loss, fear and having to face the reality that her life was forever changed by that one moment was a difficult road for her to travel. Oh yes, I shed many tears for her. She's the kind of character that helps me to understand that I have so much for which to be thankful. She is a strong, stubborn, wise woman who eventually conquered challenges that most of us could not even imagine having to face. I admired her immensely. She was very strong but also very fragile.

"If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it"-Harvey MacKay

This defines just about everyone in the book. Ally had to take a chance on Jack despite how much he hurt her. Jack had to take a chance by coming back into town knowing he had to face judgment for his mistakes. Callum had to take a chance on letting his friend back into his life despite his feelings of anger. And, if none of them had been willing, they would not have been able to move forward.

This book evoked very real emotions from me personally. I have had to deal with this very topic of absolution more than once in my life! But, I think the message is... Absolution is not about forgetting what that person did, it is instead about finding a way to put the broken pieces back together and finding a new way for things to work. And, if someone is truly sorry and they feel true remorse for what they've done, love and trust can help guide us to a new place to begin.
This book might not have the same impact for others as it did for me... that goes without saying. But, this is a great book choice for those, like myself, who love a story that is thought provoking and inspiring. This is definitely going on my personal favorites shelf... and I hope it goes onto yours as well.
I truly cannot wait to read this authors second book... Between Before and After... she has won me over! Just a wonderful, wonderful writer...

Wow this story is such a tragic tale. It makes you want to fix all the wrongs that were made with each character in this book. This was a 4 star read.

Jack and Ally are dating and Callum is the best friend they go to a concert one night and on the way home there lives will change forever.

Jack, Ally, and Callum have a tragic accident that shatters all of them in one way or another, Ally worse than the others.

Jack lives with guilt over everything that happened in the accident where he walked away with only a few scrapes and a broken mind-- he was the driver and will forever blame himself. The guilt eats away at him and he disappears without a trace, he only speaks to his dad on the phone but makes a deal with his dad to not disclose anything personal about him to his "friends". He leads a lonely tragic life even 4 years after the accident he does under ground fighting just to feel pain because he feels this is what he deserves, this is his punishment. One day that will all change when something tragic happens that brings him back home and makes him deal with everything he left behind. Will he run again after he see's the broken pieces of his friends lives that he left without saying good bye? Will it be too much like cutting open a fresh wound?

Callum walked away from the accident with a concussion and a broken heart, he not only lost his best friend but he lost some of his freedom because he was left to pick up all the broken pieces that Jack left him with. He will never forgive Jack for abandoning him,Ally, and Jacks dad. What will happen when Jack comes back after 4 long years will Callum feel hatred or remorse for him, can he let the past go and move forward, can he put his feelings for Ally behind and watch Jack and Ally get close again? Or will this tear him apart?

Ally didn't walk away from the accident with minor injuries her life will never go back to normal, she has to live with her disability the best way she can. Callum is there to help her through everything and she knows she owes him her life because if it wasn't for him she wouldn't be alive and not because of the accident. What will happen when the man she has been hating and loving and wishing he would come home does come back. Can she let him in again or was his abandonment to much for her to forgive? Can she let him see her now with her disability and flaws that she didn't have before?

This story will break your heart and slowly mend it back together. You need to read this book it was beautiful love story and yes there was tragedy but everyone has to move on with life and pick up there pieces to create there own absolution of there story.

I am always a little bit nervous when an author gives me a book to read and review, especially if it’s an author I have never read before, and especially when this author is debuting her first novel it’s even more worrying. I mean what if I hate it?? I have not liked books I have read for an author before and well I have always tried to be honest and fair in my reviews, and try and find good points. Sometimes it’s a bit more a stretch than others. But not this time, I can honestly say I have rather enjoyed this book.

Synopsis
A freak accident, a moment in time, and life changes forever. Stay or go - there's no such thing as the easy way out.

The accident wasn't his fault but in the horrific aftermath, Jack was placed in an impossible position, causing consequences he could never have foreseen. Consumed with guilt and unable to listen to reason, he takes the only option he believes is open to him: he disappears. Living a quiet life away from everyone he loves, he drops off the grid but the memories continue to haunt him.

Four years later, a funeral signals a homecoming fraught with tension as he finally forces himself to face up to the consequences of his actions. Betrayed and angry, his former best friend Callum wants nothing more than to see him disappear once again - for good this time. Meanwhile his ex-girlfriend Ally has moved on and he can see that his return is anything but easy for her. People change, life goes on and things are never as simple as they seem. The past has a habit of catching up with you when you least expect it.

Living with regret and guilt almost tore him apart, but there is no guarantee that trying to make amends will soothe his soul or help the ones he loves the most.

Courage has many faces. Fighting for what you believe in, no matter what. Showing strength of mind and body when the cards are stacked against you. Rising to the challenge and playing through the pain.

And yet sometimes, courage means simply standing your ground.

What I thought

I really did enjoy this book. It was a lot more character driven than I am normally used to, and the romance aspect felt secondary to the story itself. I loved how these people were broken inside and out, they weren’t perfect, they all had flaws, you know like real people. Ultimately this is a book about forgiveness, I mean the title itself sort of gives that away from the get go, but it’s forgiveness whether it be forgiving other people or learning to forgive yourself for your past mistakes no matter how bad. It’s about knowing that life has twists and turns and no matter how long or how far you run from them they will always catch you in the long run. And it's about second chances, and believing you deserve them.

It was well written and I really have enjoyed Amanda’s writing style. I felt it realistic as far as my knowledge of content went and I can definitely see myself absorbing everything she writes in the future. My only real critique was I would like to see emotion portrayed in other ways and not only in the eyes. But I believe over time that’s the sort of thing all authors get better with.

I could sympathize with most of the cast, but I did feel like Jack was forgiven by Ally way to easily, although at the same time I really felt his remorse and believed it. I think everyone tended to treat Ally with kid gloves a bit too much, I understand it up to a point, she has been through a lot, but come on let her breathe a bit. She has accepted her lot for the most part she isn’t going to break anymore. I was a bit miffed that no one could see that…lol

I think I was a little disappointed in the epilogue only for the fact that the romance lover in me really wanted a few more things tied up..lol I understand that that’s not how life works and hence that’s why the author has done things this way but I can’t help but wonder!!

Over all I am really impressed, I loved this and was amazed at the level of depth the story had to it. Well done Amanda, you should be proud of all you have achieved!!

4 EMOTION PACKED STARS - A Journey Worth Taking

Sometimes a story comes along that surprises you and takes you on a journey that you won’t forget. Absolution has done just that. This is a story about three friends and their journey towards finding healing, forgiveness, and acceptance. It’s a story about second chances and moving forward, but more importantly it’s a story of love. And not just the love story between a boy and girl, but a story of love between friends and family.

I felt every emotion in the spectrum, the good and the bad. Where there was despair, I felt it. Where there was anger, I felt it. Where there was hurt, I felt it. Amidst all of those emotions, I maintained hope that forgiveness would be given and received without reservation, trust would be restored, hearts would be mended, and calm would return to the lives of Ally, Jack and Callum.
Sometimes love can make us do things that seem irrational to others. In his mind, Jack did what he thought was best by isolating himself from those he loved. Leaving Ally, Tom and Callum behind was nothing short of agonizing, and he thought that if he knew nothing of them or what was going on in their lives, it would make it easier to be alone. My heart hurt for the man who was filled with self loathing for so long.

I was in awe of the caring and devoted friend that Callum was to Ally and Tom. He was the epitome of the kind of friend everyone should have in their life. Callum’s reaction to Jack’s return was to be expected after he spent the previous four years living in the wake of Jack’s departure. The strength Ally showed, even if it was a façade at times, was something of a miracle. I can’t imagine attempting to piece your life back together when you have suffered that kind of tragedy and loss.

Overall, I enjoyed the journey this story took me on. I loved the depth of the characters and the way they gripped my heart. I loved how the story would jump back in time to reveal pieces of the history of the characters. It helped in understanding where they were in the present and how they reached that point. This was a lengthy story that was a little slow at time, but totally worth it to experience the journey to Absolution. I look forward for more to come from Amanda.

Holy moly. This book packs one emotional punch! It's really hard to believe this is Amanda Dick's debut novel. She writes like a seasoned professional. I couldn't put this book down, it held my attention from the very first page, and I was left thinking about this book after I finished it.

The story opens up with Jack getting an unexpected phone call that shakes him up considerably. It leads to him going home and facing things and people he left behind. The story is told from mainly Jack and Ally's point of view, although Callum often pipes in. These three were in the car that fateful night of the accident, and nothing has been the same since. I liked Jack, Ally, and Callum, although it wasn't an instant admiration. It slowly grew as bits and pieces of what was haunting the three came to light. I understood the fears each had and even the faulty rationale each was using to rationalize past and present actions.

This story was really about the power of forgiveness. Jack, Ally, and Callum needed to forgive themselves first and foremost. It was hard watching them struggle to verbalize the apologies they felt the other deserved, when they were unable to say it to themselves. I felt so bad for Jack and all he'd lost by choosing to run away. I felt horrible for Ally thinking it was her that'd caused Jack to run and her fears that being honest with him would cause him to run again. I also certainly felt Callum's misery at trying to keep Ally from being hurt again by Jack's return and his unrequited feelings.

I love how Amanda Dick treated the many issues her characters dealt with. She was honest and real. There was no sugarcoating and it was very easy to connect, empathize, and absorb what happened to them. I think the simplicity is what makes this book so powerful. The book deals with complicated emotions and events, but by laying them bare, it makes them all the more potent. I'm eager to see how Amanda Dick manages to top this book. I'm adding her next book, Between Before and After, to my reading queue, and stock piling the tissues now.

**********received this book as an ARC***********

Reading this book really was a pleasure. I have read many books over the past year full of loss, heartache and pain and I have to say that Absolution was totally worth the read.

I loved each character and watching them learn about themselves as well as each other as this story developed. My heart broke for Jack and the guilt he carried from the beginning of this book and finally felt the peace he found at the end. He was put through the gammet of emotions in this book for sure!

Ally was amazing in her strength that she showed but also in the weakness she had, sharing her vulnerability was not something she ever wanted to do and being a burden on the people she loved was not easy for her but even she had to admit when asking for help or accepting help was a necessary evil.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more work from Amanda Dick in the future.....

One day everything is fine....the next your whole world falls apart. This is what happened to Callum, Jack and Ally. On their way to a concert, a terrible car crash that leaves them banged up except for Ally who is now paralyzed. The story follows each of their lives and their individual reactions to the accident....Jack runs away, Callum stays to pick up the pieces and Ally tries to cope with her situation. The story is heartwarming....how friends need and rely on each other. All you need is love and a great bunch of friends.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Absolution was so much more than a story for me. It was a journey.

“ She found herself questioning whether the courage, independence and sheer willpower that she had built up over the past few years would be enough.”

A horrifying car accident shattered the lives of Ally Connor and Jack McKenna. After Jack finds out that when Ally wakes up from the accident, she will no longer be the free spirited beautiful woman he loves, he panics. He will have to tell her that she is broken. And will never be the same. He also holds a secret. One that he cannot face. So he leaves. Little does Jack know that leaving Ally breaks her heart and leaves her soul broken, which is much worse than her broken body.

Years later, Jack is not the same person. He carries guilt with him of the past and has withdrawn from society. He lives a lonely life. Tragedy causes him to return home. To face his past. The truth. The lies. Ally. Jack isn’t ready, but he knows his time of running away is up. It’s time to face the music.

“She felt like she was floating and Jack was her anchor, solid and safe and here.”

The moment Jack and Ally laid eyes on each other, you felt their hearts start to beat again. You saw the darkness in their souls become a little bit brighter just by them being near. Their journey back to each other is not easy or sweet. It hurts. You feel their pain, their hesitation, their anxiety. It’s a process learning to trust someone that shatters your heart. Absolution gives truth to the power in love and all it can endure and overcome. It pushes every boundary as love always goes where it belongs.

Ally’s strength is overwhelming. It’s powerful. For someone to go through what she did and still be able to love without boundaries is breathtaking. I am still in absolute awe of her. And Jack? While he ran away, his love for Ally never wavered. It always remained. His love for her drove him away. He didn’t love her any less because of her circumstances. He loved her more because of them. His love for her was consuming. He loves Ally with conviction. Their love is simply beautiful.

“You’re a walking tower of strength- literally. You do the impossible, and you don’t even seem to know you’re doing it.”

Absolution is very slow building, yet it fits the story line. This beautiful, but heartbreaking story is effortlessly written. Every character in the story plays a part. Their voices are distinct. The author doesn’t write her characters. She breathes life into them. The writing itself is brilliant in that it seemed like every word was carefully selected to be in the story.

I became fully invested in the story and the characters the moment I started Absolution. The blurb does this story no justice. You cannot simply understand it’s depth until you are fully immersed in the story itself and the events that take place. This is not a story you’ve read before. There is true genuine and raw emotion. Your heart beats for every single person in this story. You feel everything. You live their story. Absolution is so much more than a second chance romance. It’s about the power in love and forgiveness. How resilient the human spirit truly is. Love always wins.

Beautifully Written Debut Novel

Intrigued by the blurb, I could not wait to get my hot little hands on this book. Freak accident, guilt, funerals and betrayal, sign me up! This book just screamed "there is a lot going on in here" to me! There was nothing disappointing in Absolution and everything about learning to live and love again. It is a triumph over tragedy book if I have ever read one.

Ally and Jack were dating four years ago and Callum was Jack's best friend four years ago. Four years later Jack is alone, living day to day, punishing himself for actions of his past. There really isn't much Jack wants from life at the moment, except maybe a call from his father every once in a while, other than that he has wiped the word "home" from his vocabulary-well he tries to anyway.

Ally is learning to live four years later after the tragedy and the disappearance of Jack. Callum has stepped up as Ally's best friend, helping her day by day. Although still reeling from the past, Ally is moving on and making something of herself. She thinks of Jack often, however isn't ready to see him just yet.

Callum was the best friend of Jack and tried to tell him that the accident wasn't his fault and nobody blamed him, but it didn't help. Now Callum has formed a bond with Ally, helping her with everyday things and easing her back into a normal life. Ally and Callum have kept in close touch with Tom, Jack's father since Jack left town, although there is never a word said about things going on in the present day.

Absolution follows the lives of Ally, Jack and Callum along with friends Maggie and Jane, from the past to the present. Ally struggles with the return of the love of her life, wanting to go to him and smack him at the same time. She wants answers from Jack, however she isn't sure she can handle what he has to say. Meanwhile, Jack has been punishing himself by doing some bad things recently, which is coming back to bite him in the butt.

I could not put this book down as there were so many things I needed answers about. Were Ally and Jack getting back together? How was Callum going to fit in? What were the boys keeping from Ally? How was Jack going to get out of the messes from his time away? The story is so well written and emotional, I actually got misty at a certain point. We are brought into the lives of these broken people, watching them live, learn and love again under the most unfortunate circumstances.

This was the debut novel of Amanda Dick and she did a fantastic job! Hats off to her, this is a wonderful story and I would definitely read what she writes next.

5+ STARS

Hands down, this is one the best books I have read.....EVER!!! It is absolutely BRILLIANT. There are not nearly enough stars to adequately rate this. It’s overwhelming how much I truly love love love this book!

This book made me feel……. everything. It weighed heavily on my heart. It's full of loss, pain, and regret. My heart broke for everyone involved. The pain was present right from the very beginning. I could feel the hurt and feelings of resentment and regret that have been harbored for years. I certainly cried on more than one occasion. But underneath all of the pain, also lies a story of healing, forgiveness, and learning to moving on.

Jack shoulders an enormous amount of guilt over the accident that drove him to suddenly leave four years ago. But there's more than what can been seen on the surface. Unspoken truths hold the key to why he left in the first place. Jack and those he left behind know that a lot happens in four years, but it’s not always as simple as what you’ve always imagined in your head. What they discover and learn about each other and themselves sets each on a path to acceptance, second chance, and absolution. Courage may have many faces, but so does love……

There’s just so much I love about this book…..from the writing, to the chapter quotes, to the characters, and right down to the story itself. Everything about this book is simply B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. I was sad when I read the last word. It was so wonderful I didn't want it to end. A book like this doesn’t come around often. It’s one of those very special stories that not only brings us an emotional read, but also teaches us something (well, a lot of somethings) along the way.

The writing is beautiful and definitely adds to the flow of the story. The blending of the past with the present is wonderful. I loved that the story was told with flashbacks as opposed to straight from the beginning to the end. And, the quotes at the beginning of each chapter just add to the specialness of this book. It’s hard to fathom that this is Amanda Dick’s first book. Absolution is beyond incredible for a debut offering. It’s beyond incredible PERIOD!!!

This book is simply phenomenal. Do yourself a HUGE favor and pick this one up. READ IT, READ IT, READ IT!

4 Solid Stars!

Review by Allison East

Second chance romances are one of my favorite types of books to read. I just hate to love them though, because usually someone has to get hurt first, but then they find their way back to one another.

Jack McKenna had a great life, a great girlfriend and a wonderful best friend. Then they got into a car accident, shattering his girlfriend's spine, and messing with his head. Blaming himself for everything, he just disappeared and left his life behind. For four years, he's been repeatedly punishing himself for the mistake he made. He now spends his time in the ring, fighting the pain away. Only it doesn't help.

Poor Ally, not only is she trying to start over after the accident, but boyfriend is gone. She has to learn how to cope with being in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. If he would have just stuck around, she would have told him, she didn't blame him for anything- that she loved him and they would get through it! But he didn't, and they are both far apart.

Jack has to return home after a tragedy, and then he is surely going to have to face his demons and see the one person he left behind. I understood where he was coming from, feeling guilty about what happened, feeling guilty for staying away. And I felt so bad for Ally, feeling lost and abandoned, but she honestly had this strength to fight! They had a lot to work through, and I feel like that part was really well written, and it was totally believable.

This is written as a third person narrative. It was interesting to get some insight into both Ally and Jack's thoughts and minds and how each of them healed differently from the situation that happened, seeing as both were affected, but in different ways.

I do love that even though this book could have been filled with so much drama and angst, it was kept to a minimum. And that to me, kept it very real to life. Because while certain situations lead to drama, it doesn't always have to go that route. The author seemed to know that, and wrote this story in a realistic manner.

This story was a slow build, and totally emotional, and I really appreciated that aspect. I really liked the characters and the plot line, and given the opportunity, she is an author I would definitely read again.

I really love it when I am reading a story or a book that keeps me enthralled and wanting to know more right til the end. Absolution was definitely one of those reads. Amanda’s writing has an easy flow that makes the book easy to soak up but also enjoyable. A good book in my opinion needs to hold good writing skills, a story that is able to hold my attention and characters that can connect with (be it in a good way or a bad way ... a connection is a connection) “Absolution” did all that and more. This was a book about choices, about reactions and about forgiveness. What happened that night of the car accident wasn’t Jack’s fault but he couldn’t stop blaming himself. His pain was real and deep and made me want to shake him and hug him all at once. And then he did the unthinkable. He ran away from that pain and perceived guilt, leaving the people he loves to deal with the ramifications of the accident and his actions. Despite Jack making a very wrong and weak choice in the face of his pain and guilt, I actually felt for Jack. I liked him before the accident. And then this troubled character made me want to like him but to be honest it wasn’t Jack that held my attention through most of this. Callum held that spot in my heart. I know this story is about Jack and Ally but my heart was held by Callum when reading this. He is a smartarse and cheeky and funny and underneath all that is a very strong and loyal man. He stepped up when Jack bowed out and took control of a situation that others wanted to give up on. He is fierce in his love and his pain and I have to admit that I am a sucker for a bromance. Callum’s hurt for being abandoned by his best friend and his struggle to get over that and move on once Jack returned was my favourite parts of the book. I want a Callum in my life. I would hold onto him and never let go.

This book was enjoyable, tense, awkward, and keeps you wanting for more.

This book was a little different than what I normally read. However, I was still sucked in on the first page. I wanted, no needed to find out what was going to happen. The things that Jack, Ally, and Callum had to go through are unreal. Not unreal as a bad thing either. I wouldn’t wish their lives upon anyone, Jack had a lot of guilt and fear to face, Ally was faced with so many obstacles and her own fears, and poor Callum was stuck right in the middle faced with being the best friend he could be while wishing for more, knowing deep down it never would happen. The story starts out tragically and you keep hoping for the best. Jack is so torn up about what to do he just puts it away and locks it up until it escapes him at the worst possible time. Ally finally is coming to terms with all her demons and when the one demon she thought was gone forever is right before her when things are looking down. Callum thinks he needs to protect her any way he can, I think he is afraid of the truth coming out and losing Ally for good.
The story moves quickly and isn’t dragged out, it gets to the point and makes you second guess every thing you thought. I kept cheering for Jack and Ally hoping they’d over comes all the past and present hurt. Just when you think all the bad is gone and it’s only happily ever after BOOM someone walks in and all hell breaks loose. Jack finally gets everything out in the open and things look promising. Callum does a complete one eighty and surprises me at how easily he can forgive.
This book is definitely one I will read again and again. I’m sure there are things I missed because I was so caught up in finding out what was going to happen. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a rollercoaster of ride story!

***arc was given for an honest review***

I didn't know what to expect when I read the synopsis. Well I definitely didn't expect this. Every page was just sad. I was pulled in from the beginning. Tragic start got me and brought me to tears. I'm not a fan of a book being told in the third person but I got used to it. I don't connect with the characters as much as I wanted to because of it. This one was a little different.

If I was in Jack's shoes I wouldn't know what to do either. I didn't blame him for running from this but he did miss on a lot. He didn't know how the accident impacted Ally and Callum's Lives. He made sure his father never mentioned them when they spoke. That must of been hard for him. Not knowing how the love of his life and his best friend were doing. But, then again it was his decision to leave.
Callum irritated the heck out of me. Always telling Ally what to do! So irritating! He's just so angry and it got annoying.

One thing I'm not used to is reading a story without sex scenes. I would catch myself hoping that I would get surprised with one. Ok I did with one. But it took too long to happen for my taste. Lol Sorry I love books with hot smutty scenes but I will never turn down one that doesn't provide it. I don't discriminate.
All in all this story was filled with heartache, death, anger, fighting, and most importantly working through issues and forgiveness. Absolution was well written and it will make a spot for itself in your heart when you're done. Great job Amanda! Looking forward to reading more of your stories.

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

Absolution by Amanda Dick is one of the most emotionally pack books I think I have read in a long time. Ms. Dick is a wonderful writer and pulls you into the story with characters that are completely relate-able from the very beginning.

The story begins with 3 friends, Jack, Callum and Ally. They are coming home from a concert but then they are involved in a horrible car accident. Jack and Callum were lucky enough to only suffer with minor injuries but unfortunately Ally isn’t so lucky, paralyzed from the waist down.

Filled with guilt, Jack decides to run away from his problems, his home town and his friends and only returns after a their is a death in the family. The battle between staying and making things right and leaving is his constant struggle. Throughout the book I found my heart just breaking for him. He is such a good guy!

Ally is a warrior! I mean you just got to love her. She is super strong and remains positive given whatever life has thrown at her. When I think about her, it makes me wonder how I would react to the things she has gone through and I am not sure I could have been as strong as her. But meeting her, I think I’ll try to be.

Now Callum… He is the tough hot bad ass with a heart of gold.

I can’t wait to read more from this author and I am honor to have read this book. Thank you Ms. Dick! You have helped changed me for the better.

Why isn't this book more popular? It's amazing! The characters are rich and full of life even through the darkness. I've already recommended then book to several friends.

The story is easy to read but still deep and a bit mind blowing.

Jack is awesome, Callum is my favorite and Ally. Well I'm jealous of her.

This book makes me want to stand up and do something. Change something in my life. Get things done and do them by being awesome! I want more from this author.

Absolution is a story of second chance love, betrayal, friendships, family, lies, deception and most importantly forgiveness. It captured me from the start, and was full of emotional angst as well as doses of suspense and most importantly (for me anyway) romance.

Jack and Ally have been together for as long as anyone can remember, they are the odd couple who on paper don't make sense, but when you see them together, everything just magically fits together. They love each other beyond all reason and although opposite in every way, their relationship just works.

We also meet their best friend Callum - he is the joker of the trio, always finding the upside to everything, and always up for a drink at the pub or a laugh.

We begin the story with an event that takes place years prior - an event that completely shatters the lives of all the characters. Their reactions to this catastrophe shapes the tone of the book and almost immediately, our hearts are broken by what transpires, especially between Jack and Ally.

All of them are left scarred from the event, although not all scars can be seen by the eye, some are on the inside, and those are the hardest ones to recover from. Each character struggles in their own way to come to terms with how their lives have changed.

This part of the book was especially hard for me to read, you felt each characters struggles and could relate to the things they did - even if you didn't always understand their reasons for doing what they did. I felt a kinship with each character that grew more and more as I read the book.

Jack in some ways is the character that we should all love to hate, but to read his pain makes it palpable - he is not just a one dimensional character, that does thing on a whim. Everything that he has done has been because of his internal struggles. This is so beautifully written - it almost feels as if you are privvy to the inner workings of his mind. You feel as if you are enduring all he did and it makes the book absolutely magnificent. As the story unfolds and we learn the reasons for what Jack did and watch him commit himself to the new challenges at hand, it is almost like watching your child grow. He becomes the man we all want and know he can be - and it feels as if you can finally take a breath again. Jack is such a tragic character of hurt, pain, turmoil and anger - it is hard not to feel absolutely enamoured by him, especially as the story line continues.

Ally is probably the most damaged from the event - it has changed her life in so many ways, and not for the better. Although, she has become adept at managing herself and her life, she is no longer the person she once was. That is not easy for her to deal with and her frustration and struggles are incredibly real throughout the book. I love that Amanda Dick made this character real - in the sense that she was full of anger and pride. She took nothing lying down and if you pissed her off, she wasn't afraid to let you know. The strength of this character is nothing short of amazing and there were many times where I caught myself smiling just reading about her strength of will and most certainly her stubborness. I loved that about her. Ally has real struggles and although she does make my heart ache, for me I know, that she is just one of those characters that would never take things lying down - a true fighter. She touched my heart for that reason - she has been knocked down and yes, it may have taken her some time, but she is getting back up and grabbing life with both hands.

Callum, my dear sweet Callum. This book had me absolutely swooning for him. After the tragic event, he and Ally grow very close. He is the one that looks out for her and makes sure that all is right in her world - by whatever means necessary. He becomes her knight and her champion. Although, he has also had to endure the ramifications of his life being changed completely, he has stepped up to the plate and has ingratiated himself entirely in Ally's life. I love how Callum cared for Ally - it literally made my heart palpitate knowing what he had done and given up for her. It is clear to see that his feelings for Ally go beyond friendship, but it is very obvious that the love is unrequited. There is just something about a man who loves a woman so selflessly that really makes my knees go weak. I loved Callum and he is definitely my favorite character of the book. Although, he does love Ally, he doesn't take her shit and he is still all man - which I really loved, because sometimes these kinds of characters can become really wishy washy. Callum was still all male, he could most definitely still be an asshole and he had no problem calling things as he saw them. Callum you make me swoon - and I have it on good authority that you may well be getting your own book! I cannot wait for that one!

This book is not a light or easy read - it is going to leave you feeling gutted and broken. There are times when I had to put my kindle down and just take a breather because I promise you the pain you feel for each of these characters becomes a living and breathing thing. You connect so completely with them, that their pain becomes your pain. Amanda Dick teases us mercilessly with sparks of hope that things could work themselves out throughout the book - but just as things start to look happier, she again sweeps the rug from underneath us leaving me absolutely breathless. This rollercoaster ride of emotions absolutely sucked me in - I love books that give me the "feels" and I do read a lot, but for me this book has been the most tumultuous of any book I have ever read.

Nothing is tied up in a neat bow and there is no clear ending for the characters, although, I think as we read the story we know which way our hearts lie and how we want the storyline to end. As the story weaves its spell around us we become immersed in this world of pain, heartbreak and loss, and as it reaches its crescendo we feel the healing power of friendship, family and love. The book is not all doom and gloom, there are plenty of moments that are filled with humor and growth, that it will leave you breathless.

Primarily though for me though, this is a book about the power of people, the power of relationships and how obstacles, no matter how life changing they may seem, can be overcome. There is also a healthy dose of romance which adds to the texture of the book, it is not the central focus of the book, but it certainly does round the book of very well

The story flicks back and forth between the past and the present, so we are also made aware of the trials and tribulations that each of the character has gone through since the event. You experience all the highs and lows that they do. The movement between the past and present is seamless, it is not confusing and allows you to understand the complexity of each character knowing what they endured.

One of the things that also makes this novel different, is that it is told in the third person, it has been a while since I have read anything like that and I really enjoyed it.

This is a story about love and loss, it is a story about second chances and overcoming. It tells the tale of friends who have become family and takes you on a journey from the moment you open the page. This is also a story about hope and strength, about being able to rise once you have fallen. It was beautifully crafted and intricately detailed so that you could not help but be sucked into the lives of these (are they really fictional, because they seem real to me) characters.

Amanda Dick has really astounded me with this book - it is probably not something I would have ordinarily chosen for myself, but what an oversight that would have been. It is a unique tale that has been flawlessly written - the attention to detail is beyond incredible and the journey you are taken on is simply beyond words.

I also loved the quotes that she used as the start of each chapter - something completely different, but it always set the perfect tone! SIMPLY AMAZING

This is an AMAZING 5 Stars from me. It is a MUST read for me for 2015.
