In Design Outlaws , Christopher Zelov, Phil Cousineau and Brian Danitz have gathered together the interviews of over twenty of the leading designers and architects from their award winning documentary Ecological Inventing the Future . This far reaching collection is lavishly illustrated and will inspire both the professional and the general reader alike.
This is an amazing compilation of minds that are way ahead of their time. It opened up my eyes to some unique thinkers who have come up with some original "outside-the-box" innovations and ways of life to get humanity on track to building a more completely self-sustaining civilization. Areas such as architecture, lightweight cars designed in the 50's by R. Buckminster Fuller, Geodesic Dome designs (also Bucky) hydroelectric, smart urban and suburban planning, large-scale water purification John Todd (see also "From Eco-Cities to Living Machines - Principles in Ecological Design" by Nancy Jack Todd and John Todd). All told through a very interesting, informative, and fun-to-read narrative, Design Outlaws on the Ecological Frontier comes highly recommended simply for the doors it will unlock. Also available is a video based on this book, but it is hard to track down.
Zelov and Danitz aren't the most gifted writers nor are they really comfortable making coherent book designs but the topics being covered and the interviews round this book out. If you want to learn about sustainable design you have to go deeper, but for a brief overview and for a few names to follow up on- this book is key.
