These issues (#9-12) are where Sim really starts to hit his stride, and it’s incredible to watch him start to blossom into one of the greatest cartoonists of the modern age. It also features the debut of the Cockroach, one of the best comic characters in, uh, comics.
But the thing that really stands out to me in this collection are the text pieces. His story about Marshall Rogers explaining his take on “The” Batman. His stories about meeting and befriending Gene Day. And his reflections on the nervous breakdown he suffered before he’d even published a dozen issues. That one is especially prescient and heartbreaking in retrospect.
Dave Sim turned out to be a shitheel, seemingly determined to undo all of his remarkable accomplishments in comics. But this collection is an important reminder that he didn’t start out that way, and that’s the tragedy. I really enjoyed spending time with this Dave Sim again.
