Told from the perspective of a Minecraft player who inadvertently finds himself sucked into the game, you must make choices to survive and find your way out.
I re-read this (with a different outcome) with my son tonight. And my son has been reading this book on his own all day long, going through multiple different choices. He's absolutely thrilled and excited about it, talking about it constantly and all the different adventures he went on.
So I want to increase my rating for it. It's got him really excited about reading and I absolutely love that. He normally likes to read, but I feel like this has made him love it even more.
I still think it's kind of morbid that you can just die or never end up back at home. But I can't fault it too much because it's gotten my son so excited to read more. But hopefully at least ONE of the outcomes has us actually escaping Minecraft! lol
----------------------------------- ----------------------------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW (2/4/2025): ORIGINAL RATING (3 STARS)
My son (well, all my kids) are huge Minecraft fans. So for my son's birthday I picked this one up for us to read together. It's setup like the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books, which is really fun and nostalgic for me because I read a lot of those as a kid (and a few as an adult).
We read this through once so far and there are 30 possible endings, so we only got one so far.
It was an enjoyable experience and my son loved being able to choose what we do next. Each choice is about a 2 page read, so it's fairly quick, depending on what choices you make.
The one problem I had with it is that the ending we got was that we died. Now, considering a real person was sucked into the game, this is kind of morbid to me. I would've much preferred for each ending (whether we die or not) to end up with us waking up and being back in the real world. It makes you wonder what happened in real life? Is the character just gone? Kind of sad to me.
Still, my son loved it and he was already talking about what choices he wants to try differently next time. So I'm sure we will read this more.
I'm really regretting getting rid of my huge Choose Your Own Adventure book collection because I think that would've been fun to read with him.
Overall a nice modern take on the classic. Looking forward to reading this one again.

I read this with my six year old son who loves Minecraft. He enjoyed this book, wanting to go back and try branching paths to try to "escape" the game. On that note, it's good.
However, unlike other Choose Your Own Adventure-type books, this one has somewhat darker endings when things go wrong. You pretty much just die, and in some cases the descriptions were such that I felt I had to leave them out or change them as I read them to my son. Perhaps the target age is a little older, but I think that lack of diversity in endings is a major drawback for the book.
Edit: My husband and kid are now calling it "the cursed book" because they can't for the life of them get the escape ending.
Are we finished with this book? I don't know. There are so many endings here. We could read it a 100 times and still be entertained. I think this book would make a great gift for a Minecraft fan, you'd get real bang for your buck.
