After thirty-one years, Riley Fisher-Wolf is finally out on her own. For the first time in her life, she’s without her overbearing mother, extroverted roommates, and most recently, her controlling husband Evan. After a lifetime of damaging relationships, she’s finally found the courage to begin her own life.
But then came the hand-scrawled note under her door.
We’re never really alone.
Suddenly, Riley finds her peaceful independence turning upside down. Items go missing in her home. Mysterious figures follow her in the shadows. And just like that, Riley realizes she’s being watched.
But by whom?
Evan is the obvious culprit but Riley can’t rule out her paranoid, overprotective mother. There’s also the handsome new stranger who works in her building who knows more about Riley than she’s ever told, and her soon-to-be newlywed clients whose image of perfection is crumbling into something dark and toxic right before Riley’s eyes.
There are far too many suspects in Riley’s new life of independence, and at this point, she has no idea who she can trust.
All she knows is that somewhere out there, someone doesn’t want her to be alone…
This definitely is a psychological story but not what I consider a thriller, maybe a mystery, drama tale. The story is about a young woman learning to live alone after having a controlling mother when she was growing up and then a controlling husband in her contented but not-so-happy marriage. As soon as she starts living on her own, strange things started to happen and she feels as though she is being watched at home, at work and out in public. So, the story revolves around "Is she being stalked or is it her imagination?"
I enjoy books about stalking where there is feeling of uneasiness with a creep factor that seems to be brewing underneath the surface creating an unnerving feeling and then I don't want to put the book down. Unfortunately, this book was too slow for me. The storyline was good but the chilling edge that I look for seemed to be missing. There wasn't (imo) enough background information on the main characters history so they came across shallow and left too many unanswered questions, although there was a really clever twist at the end of the book that I never saw coming and that redeemed the book for me.
I do recommend this book because it was an enjoyable read, just not gripping and many other readers felt it was a great story. I have given this book a rating of 3 🌟🌟🌟 stars!!
Where to even start? There were so many crazy twists and turns in this book that I felt breathless just reading it on the couch! Heads up - if you’re one of those seasoned thriller readers who thinks they can guess the reveal, good luck with this bad boy because it is a HELL of a mindfuck.
The story follows Riley, who is living alone for the first time at age 30 because she’s just kicked her controlling asshole husband, Evan, to the curb. She’s finally starting to get in the groove of the single life when one night, a creepy Polaroid of her own apartment gets slid under her door... and from there, her world becomes haunted by mysterious, unexplained happenings.
Someone is following her. Someone might be breaking into her apartment. But who? There’s a whole cast of strange, likable but suspicious characters that you can’t help but distrust. Evan is a piece of work, Riley’s mom is way overbearing, and as much as you enjoy them as the reader, you know there is something off about all the new acquaintances from work.
I could not stop reading this book. I tore through it in one evening because there was zero chance of me sleeping without getting to the bottom of this madness and when I did, I damned near threw my Kindle across the room. SO crazy!! So good.
As far as I can tell, this is the author’s debut and I couldn’t be more impressed. Definitely keeping my eyes peeled for future works from Avery Lane!
I was guessing till the end with this one, and trust me when I say I was nowhere close with my guess! The plot twist is WILD! I was so mind-f***ed that I needed some time to get over my book hangover before writing this review.
Riley is a divorced woman who is for once out on her own and just about to find her groove when she receives a mysterious note under her door.
We're never really alone.
Well, that's creepy. But of course, it gets worse. From that night forward, it seems she has a stalker. Her ex-husband would be an obvious suspect, but unfortunately, we've got a whole lot of other shifty characters who could be the root of Riley's newfound torment.
I absolutely loved the complexities of the supporting cast. Riley's mom had her motives, and unfortunately reminded me a lot of my own! LOL. Then there was gorgeous Gabriel who just kept knowing way more than he was supposed to, and Sierra and Brighton who you couldn't help but feel drawn to (despite involving Riley in some pretty shady business at some points).
Don't even try to guess the end. Just prepare to say, "I did NOT see that coming!"
Excellent. Perfect amount of mystery, back story and supporting characters.
This, apparently, was a debut novel from the author and I'm impressed to say the least. The story kept me interested and the twist at the end was awesome.
This is a great suspense book. The twists come from out of nowhere! I seriously read one particular part, backed up a chapter and read it again because I thought I read something incorrectly. Fans of thrillers, check this book out!
I am so relieved to finally be done reading this book. This is one of the worst novels I've read in a long time. The editing was poor and the sentence structure was, at times, quite confusing. None of the characters was fully developed. Mercifully, the book was short. Not even worth reading for free.
Nothing felt believable in this book to me - but I think there was the potential for a good story, it just wasn’t capitalized on. The writing was shallow and I felt zero emotional connection to the story or the characters, except very briefly towards the ending. Even then, it was just kind of “meh”.
One of the best things that could’ve happened to this book however is A GOOD EDITOR! The missed conjunctions, improper word tenses, and just poor grammar & spelling in multiple places just really killed this book for me.
I’m not in the majority here so read for yourself, as the twists were good, just not well executed. Decent quick read, though I powered through just to get to the ending so I could start something else.
Riley has finally gotten on with her life as a single and independent woman. Her life up to now has been with an overpowering mother watching every step of her life and taking control of every step she took. Then into a marriage with what she has only recently realised was a husband who also controlled every moment of her time, cooking all their meals, stopping her from seeing college friends, through to deciding what she should or could do.
She has now separated from her husband, Evan, but he hasn’t taken it well. Riley thinks that a strange photo with a note on the back saying ‘we’re never really alone’, that appeared under her flat door, was from him, but isn’t sure. Suddenly she thinks she is seeing things, that someone is following her and items are being messed about with both at home and at her office.
Her work as a party organiser sees her trying to arrange a short notice wedding for an attractive couple. She gets one impression of them and is then lead to changing her opinion completely. Add in attention from an attractive man downstairs, below her office, and the links to her overpowering mother are even more complicated.
This book has a very unusual twist, most of which will come as a complete shock. The reasons behind her mothers’ over controlling behaviour come to light somewhat, but Riley is still left to puzzle out what is happening and who has been following her. An interesting read that keeps you guessing throughout.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Received this book as an ARC for my honest review. Riley has went from her mother who was beyond controlling to her husband of many years who is also extremely controlling. She finally decided that she has had enough and she makes him leave. Evan doesn't want to leave and has physically assaulted her and her assistant at her place of work. Riley thought she was finally free and more issues arise. One saving grace that she has is she meets Gabriel who seems to always be around when she needs someone. Then during the course of her job she meets Sierra and her husband Brighton and becomes more than just a work relationship they develop a friend relationship. Riley starts noticing weird things going on to include a picture under her door, feeling like someone is watching her and then her husband (as they aren't divorced yet) ends up dead. I started and ended the book the same day. I gave it 4 stars just because that rating is "I liked it" but it is probably more like a 3.5. It had a twist that you didn't see coming. It was a good book, well written and held my attention for the most part.
Wow! My mind is blown away. I was glad I finished reading this one! It was a slow starter for me and didn't build up until towards the end. There were twist and turns I never saw coming which makes this an exceptional read. It keeps you guessing until the very end. The plot was different and intriguing. The characters were developed. I would have liked more intimate scenes with Riley and Gabriel especially towards the end. There are instances where I don't like to "read between the lines" and this was one of them. Overall a great read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book....
4.5 The only reason for the 4.5 instead of 5 is it started like most psychological thrillers, maybe a little slower. Other than that I was flummoxed with the twists and turns and the ending was unexpected! Riley is divorced, trying to make it on her own after kicking out a self controlling husband. Think that explains what will happen? Nope, it doesn't. I would highly recommend reading this. Buckle up for the ride of your life. Thank you Hidden Gem for the opportunity. All comments are my own.
Voluntary review of an ARC. Very good psychological drama. Well developed characters and interesting plot which is somewhat convoluted but not at all confusing. A few small discrepancies concerning Gabriel's age but otherwise well thought out. The story involved spousal manipulation and control from both the male and female perspectives which I found particularly timely. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
This was fast paced and very good for a debut novel, better than good. My rating is on the story rather than the writing. Riley is the consummate victim and protagonist-although some things were out of her control- there were several places where she could’ve made better choices and/or taken responsibility for her actions she would’ve been more likeability
I had expected it to be a psychological thriller, as was advertised on the cover page, and it did not fail to deliver. Lane managed to make me suspicious of every character in the book in the first half of the book. I had made out that everyone is connected in some way, just not sure in what way. But boy, did things escalate quickly when the ultimate twist was revealed. Pretty good attempt and one of the better ones in this genre I've read recently.
What an awful book. The sentence structure was odd. The characters were completely underdeveloped, obnoxious, not believable, very snotty, and rude to each other....even when they were "being nice". The "twist" wasn't a twist. It was more of an "uh ok" 🤷🏽. Predictable.
What can I say that was good? The chapters were short making it easy to read.
Not sure how this book has almost 4 stars. To each their own, I guess.
As a whole it wasn't a bad story. A few spots were a little unrealistic. But then again I guess it was a little like real life and all the skeletons people have in their closets. Secrets, lots of secrets we try so hard to hide BUT eventually they come out in the end.
Every Are You Take is the first book that I have read by Avery Lane. I love psychological thrillers and I definitely enjoyed this one! There were so many twists and turns and emotional upsets that kept me on the edge of my seat, turning page after page. I will definitely be looking for more of Ms. Jane's work!
The story started off a little slow and then picked up pace and tension. Lots of twists and turns. I think this book/story were not a great match. But it could be for someone else. I did read in one sitting. I just didn't have that post great book withdrawal. Again, the writing was skilled and Ill keep reading this author.
“I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.” I really enjoyed this book, it kept me wondering until the end. I was totally surprised by some of the characters in the book. I would recommended this book to my friends.
Absolutely an amazing psychological thriller! A debut novel really? Wow then! I found this one scary . Actually it was more than that, and I wonder how you imagined some of this? Great plot and characters!
This is an excellent thriller that kept my interest throughout the story. There are some twists and turns that you don't see coming, which of course keeps you mesmerized to the very end.
Avery Lane is off and running! I enjoyed the book and I will definitely read more of her novels. The ending felt a little rushed but not enough to change my 5 star rating :)
Was a very great book that kept u in suspense threwout the whole time I was reading it! Love thriller stories like this definitinly will recommend this book toy friends and family.
This was a good read and the writing style was easy to follow. I liked the plot twists and when I thought I had things figured out, I was delightfully proven wrong. You won't be disappointed.
