Inspired by the development of Cubism, the Futurist movement was founded in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, along with painters Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carr?, and Gino Severini. The school, which celebrated technology and the mechanical era, was comprised of painters, sculptors, designers, architects, and writers. Motion and machines were two main themes of this movement, which attacked the bastions of establishment and sparked controversy by its glorification of war and support of Fascism. Experimenting with movement, and speed, and abstract light and color, the Futurists developed approaches and techniques that were revolutionary at the time, and in retrospect one can see that the Futurists influenced other avant-garde art movements, most notably Russian Constructivism.

An interesting essay on a rather off-the-beaten-track artistic movement. Taschen Basic Art Series is usually devoted to singular artists rather than whole -isms, which makes this issue's content slightly different from others. After a medium-length essay on Futurism and its variations, we get spreads for single works, along with thorough explanations of their execution and the ideas behind their creators. Some authors span three or four spreads, while other minor figures get only one chance to shine. It is an interesting book for a first shallow contact with an even more interesting intellectual movement. Obvious links with fascism are not deeply analysed, but some obfuscation on the subject surrounded the original manifestos already, and artists were always a bit ambiguous on matters of politics.

Il Futurismo rappresenta l’avanguardia per eccellenza.
Questo libro ne ripercorre la storia. Molto bello ed ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo.

A new exhibition is on at the AGNSW!!!
(That's the Art Gallery of New South Wales to YOU!!!)
Paths to Abstraction.

I started in on it yesterday after attending my 9th Learning Curve Lecture on Cinema's History of the 20th Century.
By the back door!!
That is to say, I was able to enter without a ticket or having seen any of the exhibits by going into the shop so temptingly placed as you exit the show.
And bought two books: Futurism, and Expressionism.
And served by a young woman who was a terrific piece of art herself,
Short hair, very black, parted on the side exactly in the male style, but cropped incredibly short on one side of the part, lips in the reddist of reds and everything else about her falling into place to make ...a complete work of Art!!!!

Hope the book is as good!!!!

A good primer on the movement and the people who made it happen. Lots of time-lines, illustrations, and pictures of the artists.
