I did not finish the book. I found something outputting with the author's writing style. It was almost as if she was afraid of dialog. Here's a snippet from pretty early in the story:

Mariner said he would quite like to see the place if Earle didn’t mind if he tagged along.

“I could ask them why they are moving and get a few pointers about the trouble in the area.” Earle said it was fine by him.

“The Camerons had the place before them. You remember them, Mars?” The Marshall nodded and asked what happened to them.

In this excerpt there are a couple instances where the author tells us that something happened, such as the Marshall asking what happened, rather than putting in the dialog.

The story was also choppy. There was one point where Jenny was reminiscing over the past and then all of the sudden its the next day. No breaks or anything to indicate there was a passage of time.

I also came across at least one name spelling typo. I think this book really could have benefited from more editing.

The premise was good and even promising. It just wasn't working for me.

The Marshall's Second Chance: A Historical Western Romance by Aurora Hanson. Ms. Hanson is a new author to me. This story
had quite a few slow moments, to me, however, it moved along nicely. Smartly written, with historical details. An American saga set in the 1800's west.

Jenny Carson, is trying to build up the ranch, her brother left to her, for her son. Mariner Jones, is the new Marshall sent to clean up the town, they were childhood sweethearts.

This story is filled with mystery, danger, second chance love, secrets ,friendship and a quest for the truth. Overall, this story was very good, not a set on the edge of your seat story action paced story, but more of a romantic saga. A few and twists will keep you guessing to why the culprit was doing the things she/he did, the murder, crime and mayhem in, opinion, helped move the story along. The characters were engaging, the secondary characters helped carry the story along, some will capture your heart, others not so much, as good stories often do.
In my humble opinion, Aurora Hanson is doing a wonderful job as a new author, her story was an interesting, sweet, clean romance, with plenty of murder and mayhem. Please note: this is a very long story, around 500 pages. Fans of long stories, second chance romance, Historical Western romance, interesting characters and a few surprises, should enjoy this story.

I will not restate the plot nor reveal any spoilers in this review.
Aurora Hanson has written a saga of life in the West during the 1800's. The story revolves around Jenny, a young mother who inherited a ranch with her brother. As is the case in most westerns, there are gunfights, rowdy towns and a Marshall who always captures the bad guys. In this case, the Marshall and Jenny were childhood sweethearts but grew up as friends. Then life gets in the way, when as adults each faces personal tragedies.
This is a long book. The plot is good and well thought out. The author leaves you guessing until the end before revealing the murdering culprit and sidekick. I personally prefer a riveting story line and, while this book takes you on a journey, it lacked the "I can't put this book down" quality. It does however call to you until you finish it.
I received this book as an advanced copy so there were numerous grammatical and punctuation mistakes. There were also places where characters' names were misspelled. I am hopeful that prior to release the editing issues are corrected.
The Marshall's Second Chance is a clean read: no sex, cursing nor guts and gore. Her historical research seems accurate. All in all, an enjoyable read.

Wonderful Horse Opera!
This is an excellent mystery. My only complaint is that the story is not in keeping with the mores and folkways of the day. This is a very long story and gets into great depth and detail about the characters and their motivations. It moves very quickly. I plan on reading the whole series. I bought this book and this is my honest review.

I enjoyed this book very much. I enjoyed all the characters in this book. Jenny and Mariner were the main characters. They had grown up together and were good friends. They however had gone separate ways married had children; but life brought them back together again. Mariner had lost his wife and daughter to foolishness outside a bar where drunk patrons were shooting off their guns. Jenny had lost her fiancé. He had just disappeared and she didn't know what had happened to him. Come to find out he had been murdered and was dead. However she has a little boy named Luca. He is a very important part of this book. However there are other characters within the story that are just as important to the success of this book. All of the characters were very well fleshed out. The storyline was not rushed at all. And, the book came to a successful conclusion although I would have liked it to have ended with their wedding. I would love to read more books by this author.

Constructive criticism

I’d like to fulfill my part as part of the ARC group to give my honest to goodness review. As much as I love the storyline and the foundations of the story, for me, it was a little flat. I felt that emotions that could have been played up for more drama and connection were summed up in a sentence or two, while everyday activities and all the steps each character did were mentioned more (from eating to walking to mentioning the gossiping almost every other paragraph/page). Although I appreciated the twists and turns, for me it could have had a more impact on the reader. There were a few typo errors that are easy enough to overlook. As a whole, the chapters were okay I suppose and the ending end epilogue more than brought the entire thing together.

Mysterious romance, I found the story a bit strange. Couple sleeping in each others arms, but no sex? An unmarried woman of means, with a 5 yr. old son, seemingly accepted without question in a time when showing your legs was considered scandalous? I loved the loving acceptance with no regard to faith, creed, or race. Past mistakes stayed in the past, only current and future behavior brought judgement. A different type of book, that gets you thinking. I would buy books from this author. Because we all need to learn new ways to accept our differences.

I like to try new and different. writing. And I was pleasantly surprised by the way this story was presented. Read my headline, I said it all there

Mystery and romance

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. If you like mystery and clean romance, you will enjoy this book. Jenny and Mars were teenage sweet hearts who went there separate ways. Mars was married and had a daughter who were killed by a gunman. He later became a Marshall for his hometown where Jenny owned a ranch with her brother. Jenny had a son by her fiance who disappeared two weeks before their marriage. With Mars back in town and both single, their teenage love is rekindled. They are able to solve the mystery of Jenny ' s lost fiance as well as finding out who is terrorizing the town and why. I highly recommend this book.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I liked the story itself. It had an interesting mystery to it. The main characters, Jenny and Mars were best friends as teenagers, then lost in touch with each other only to reconnect when Mars became sheriff in town. Of course they have a happy ending after a lot of trouble with outsiders.
I didn't care for the writing style. I felt there was too much narrative and not enough dialog but that may just be me. I gave it 4 stars and I will try other books by this author.

"This the second book I've read by this author and I must say that I have enjoyed both.
I did find that in both books the couples in question slept together before being married, admittedly because of things that were happening in their lives, with never a raised eyebrow from family/friends/neighbours,or even the pastor.
I am glad that this couple did eventually after 7 years apart did get their 'Happy Ever After' and I must say that the idea of the extended Epilogue was the finishing touch, as was Jenny's son Luca, what a STAR!!!

The Marshall's Second Chance by Aurora Hanson

A busy read. Between work, romance, homicide and the cast of characters.. you will be a busy reader. Can you keep up?? Hey, I did and had a good time doing so. I truly did enjoy this read.. I admit it took me awhile.. I blame it on my old eyes that get tired sooner than they did in the past. I was gifted with a copy of the story by the author for which I am very thankful. I do like receiving good gifts. This is an honest review. This is a very good story that will keep you turning the pages to see what is next. Happy Reading!!

Heart Warming Story

This is the first story I’ve read in the historical western romance genre. I’ll be honest it’s quite different than other books I typically read. The emotions and warmth is perceived as genuine between Mariner and Jenny. I love how they had a relationship and friendship as kids, and then life brought them back together as adults. If I had one complaint is that the author introduced the reader to too many characters through the story. It became difficult at times to keep each one and their purposes straight.

I liked this book even though at times it was a tad confusing with all the names that appeared. Jenny and Mariner were childhood friends. Now Jenny is running a ranch and Mariner is back as the Marshall to clean up the town after the railway has brought in some shady characters. While Jenny's brother has purchased the ranch next to theirs, they find mystery, gun fights, and romance. In search of who killed her fiancé, they find themselves targets. Nicely written western romance of the 1800's. Looking forward to more of her books.

Did not finish this book

I had a hard time getting into this book. I enjoy more description of the settings, characters and dialog which helps me connect with the story. These were brief and basic. Dialog would ensue, but then quickly be summarized by a narrative, to move on to another brief scene. Not enough depth for me and when one character offered a "low price" to the neighbors who were in over their heads and needed help, I checked out. I prefer my protagonists to offer good people in trouble a 'fair' price. Not my type of story.

Well written story with unexpected twists and turns. The story is flowing well of the pages. Characters are likeable and well described. Story of nice length. A story that pulls you in because it is written so it feels almost realistic.
Absolutely an amazing writing style and a story with heart.

Good plot

This book had a really good plot but I thought the writing was just okay. There were too many scenes of eating which added nothing to the story. There were inconsistencies in scenes and the writing seemed juvenile at times.

Lovely story!

The return of a long lost love creates chaos and stirs up old mysteries for Jenny and her son Luca. Good characters and a wholesome tale that makes you feel like you are seeing the real old west! Great read!

Just ok

Very long winded tale of love and just a little adventure. Character development was just so so and main characters relationship would have been scandalous for the times. Not very believable

The story was a good one, but I am not fond of the “he said, she said” writing style. The book seemed to drag on and on. I recognize the research that shows through out so I want to appreciate the authors work. I plan to read one more before making a complete opinion.

THE. MARSHALL S SECOND CHANGE

A very beautifully told story of old plans becoming new beginnings.Intrique, murder, and blossoming love all play a part . The mountains. of Arizona gives the story a great setting.A large ranch provided the characters along with a lot of action.

A Fantastic Story of Second Chance for Love!!

Aurora Hanson has given readers a book that is well-written and very enjoyable. Marshall's Second Chance is an outstanding Western romance with spectacular cast of characters. What a rollercoaster ride with all the twist and turns in this murder mystery which leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat. A heart pounding story with plenty of drama, secrets, family trials and family love. Mariner and Jenny are so believable you feel every emotion that they are feeling throughout and you imagine yourself as one of the characters or just part of the story. They draw you in and give you reason to take the journey with them. The scenes are so strikingly detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that makes you feel like you are one with the story. With remarkable emotions, and unforgettable characters.

This was a story about childhood sweethearts who are reunited after both suffered heartaches and losses. Jenny runs a ranch with her brother Earle! She has a wonderful son,Luca whose father disappeared one day. There was plenty of loss and mystery in the book! She finally learns what happened to her sons father but not who killed him. There was a lot of slow parts and it could have had a faster pace. The book just felt like it took forever to read! I did enjoy the characters and the story. There were grammar, spelling and punctuation errors but not so bad that you couldn’t read the book. If you like western romance this is a good book to read!

The Marshalls Second Chance

This book was well written, it’s a mystery as well as a love story.
The Marshall has left when he was younger and married a woman who died with his son, by being hit with stray bullets.

He returns home to find his childhood sweetheart and learns she has a son. He asks about the child’s father and learns he disappeared and was never heard from.

Some things happen and they find a pile of bones who belongs to the missing man and looks like a woman’s bones also, they were shot. So a mystery to be solved. Who did it.. good book.

WONDERFUL

This is a very intriguing book. The diversity of the characters is so strong. The fact that both of the main characters were in love as teenagers, and that their love had not lessened over the years but had grown is really cool.
The fact that Luca's father was shot in the head and no one knew it until years later was a good idea. That the one behind the killings was the man who professed to love the woman he killed was unreal.
I enjoyed this book so much that I couldn't put it down.
I am an avid reader and I just love a good story.

Thank you,

Another chance for love

This is a very well written book by Aurora Hanson and I really liked it. Young love, a young woman and her brother, a large ranch, return of a young love now a marshall, green grass?, a young son, buying a ranch, finding a (green) mine, two murders, a old love found murdered, threats, security, will they survive?, will a old love be renewed?, a happy ever after? If any of this catches your interest, buy the book and enjoy reading it as much as I did. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys reading a very good book.

I hate it when I get a book because it's advertised as Christian fiction, only to find out that it's anything but Christian. You'll read about the main characters kissing on just about every page. After awhile you'll read about them sleeping together on a regular basis too. While there's no mention of sex, there's also no mention of God or how He asks us to live. Not once do we see them going to church, reading the Bible - or even having one. There's no prayer, even in danger, or thanks when they're safe. This is not a Christian book.

This story has a very good plot involving crimes from the past and present and the way they are solved is the backbone of this great story. Along with solving the crimes is the lives of the people involved, with their hopes for the town, their ranches, falling in love, overcoming deep sorrow, hopes for tomorrow and giving people a chance at trusting them. These are interwoven together to make a wonderfully full and very enjoyable read. Highly recommend reading it.
