Unexpected Powers is book four in the unexpected series. The timeline of the book runs parallel to Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me (Book three) and the both coincide with the end of Saving Alex. If you find everything I just said confusing, you are not among those of us who have followed the series. Join us and catch up. This series is best enjoyed by reading the books in order.

This installation explores the life of Ash. He was the forced mate of the man who kidnapped Alex in the prior books. When Alex is rescued he sends his liberator to rescue Ash. Ash is now supposed to be a free man, but he has once again become imprisoned. This time in a cell of his own making.

When D, freed Alex, he was satisfied with his life and not seeking anything else. Fate had other plans, however. D, rescues Ash as Alex insisted, but one look at Ash and D is head over heels in love. The problem is Ash has locked himself away in a prison made of his distrust and emotional trauma. As D sets about working his way through the layers surrounding Ash’s heart, and Ash begins to trust and love again something new and strange begins to occur.

I enjoyed this book. As I have learned with Chris McHart, you just must expect the unexpected. His approach to the details is refreshing. We have all read mpreg, cross species mating and forced mating books, but, not like this. Male pregnancy is illegal, there is a very different hierarchy in the supernatural world. There is tenuous interaction between humans and supernatural beings. The list goes on and on and keeps growing with each book. The series books intertwine in such a way as to not just continue the story but continually develop it in refreshing ways rarely seen.

At this point the only criticism of I have of Chris McHart is I wish he would type faster.

This story about Ash and D was a nice mpreg paranormal/magic novel about a rescued, subjugated and now windowed mate of a vampire Master and the enforcer whom saved him. Other than mention of vampires, the monarchy and rarity of wizards, I wasn’t sure what other supernatural there were nor what powers the monarchy or D had. Were members of the monarchy vampires too? How did D and his team survive protecting their assignments from harm?

The novels takes us through Ash’s freedom and growth as a freed man whom has spent his life up to this point as a virtual prisoner to his parents prior to their voluntary sale of their son to his mistreating vampire mate. This was an accepted custom in our novel’s world and D and his friends work to change the laws around treatment of such mates. We are taken through Ash’s overcoming his conditioned training to become a strong man of his own rights and how D stays a true gentleman. The evolution of their relationship is well-conveyed and keeps a reader’s attention. Their actual sexual relationship – whether Ash or D is the pregnant one – is an interesting play on the strong dominant protector versus the previously submissive mate who proves to become a wizard at the point when D verbally declares his love to Ash. I think it would have been interesting if Ash started experiencing wizardry powers the moment D realizes his attraction and unwavering dedication to Ash and his well-being. It seems a bit cliché that Ash comes into his powers at the same time D verbally states his love. Does this mean that upon verbally declaring love, wizards come into their power? Or was it that wizards come into their power when they realize they are loved romantically?

Despite new questions that I am now curious about, this novel was well-paced and definitely worth reading. It makes you wonder if there was a book prior to this or if there will be a continuation which will provide additional answers.

To end, there were some editing/grammatical issues which threw me off whilst reading and decreased my understanding which I emailed to the author.

An ARC was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

Wow! I really enjoyed this book which is a continuation of the Unexpected series. Alex's Surprise, Saving Alex, and Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me are the first 3 books in this interesting and enjoyable series. You'll meet several of the characters from the first 3 books here. The main characters tracker D and the seriously abused mate Ash. I read this book practically straight through because I didn't want to stop though exhaustion made me put the book down until the next day.

Tracker D went back to save Ash during the prior rescue of Alex from Edler Adali's residence. D felt some unknown draw to Ash which is why he defied orders and with a clear and present danger went back to get Ash out along with Alex. D hopes and pushes Ash to seek out help for his many issues. D in the meantime has to hold back his intense feelings and desire for Ash until he might possibly one day return his feelings. While slowly exploring the world for the first time Ash slowly emerges from his shell and possibly realizes his love for D. With D and Ash's love buds strange things start happening to Ash. An unexpected pregnancy surprises both D and Ash. Ash it is determined to be part of a thought to be paranormal species called Mages. This is another aspect of Ash and D's life to adapt to and work through.

Read the story to find out what's going on with Ash and where it will Ash and D. Ash has to over come the severe torture and abuse he suffered by his mate Elder Adali. Will things change with the revelations from D and Ash? How do they affect not only their lives but has far reaching implications for not only D and Ash but their group or circle of vampires and shifters. The book is rich with detail and character development. I would love to see more about what's happening to Ash's since that was the only thing not fully covered. I'm looking forward to further books in this series as there's plenty of enjoyable characters that could I think support other stories. Get your copy and see what I mean.

Nobody does gay m-preg like Chris McHart! This latest book in this series is both heartbreaking and heartwarming; such a touching and impassioned romance. The plot was engaging, the writing impressive, the imagery vivid, and the characters complex and well thought out. These characters quite simply draw you right into the story and make you believe in this extraordinary world the author has created for us. You just can't help but become invested in their lives, and rooting for them becomes second nature. One physically and emotionally damaged yet beautiful man meets another man who will do anything it takes to save him and show him the healing power of true love. Their journey to love is truly a joy to read. I was hooked from very early on and remained riveted to the very last word. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, sexy, and utterly compelling read.

PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!
To my ratings (for all people, who wonder, why I say a 3*-book is a good book and should be readed):
5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like Liberty from Seth King or Save the kids series from EM Leya). it’s like an A+
4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books)
It’s like an A
3* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It’s like an A-B
2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartly, but it was ok)
It’s like an C- D
1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (maybe too many mistakes, not a nice plot, or unlogical story, so a NO-GO)
It’s like failure in the whole line, dismissed, repeat the class

MM paranormal romance. It's book four of a series, and it's been a while since I read book three. I vaguely remembered the situation.
Ash was rescued by D from an abusive master. He is wounded, depressed, and suffers from PTSD. D is intrigued by Ash and pursues him until Ash finally has the will to get better and return the affection.
At the end of the story are a couple of rushed magical and political developments. I wish more time had been devoted to them. The king is adamantly against an issue, then suddenly changes his mind.
Typos: Each chapter that begins with D has that letter printed twice: once in italic and once not. Lose is spelled loose, king is inconsistently capitalized, extra comma ("Love, you too"), missing period (determined to wait"), an object had been laying in the bathroom but it should be lying, awkward wording ("looked in the round" for looked around the table), 20 written for twenty, on our own is written on our on.

Unexpected Book 4

This book was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this book was much better than the last. This book brings together D, a tracker, and Ash, the battered rescued mate from the previous book. Ash is suffering severe PTSD and depression. D is drawn to the man he rescued. After Ash is released from the hospital D is soon called to him to see if he can make a difference in getting Ash back on his feet. Slowly a friendship develops.

This is a friends to lovers, to more, book. We get a little surprise, but nothing that really pops. I kept waiting for something bad to happen but it never did. That's really the only problem I felt. Both characters are likable, and you do take a look at the the effects of PTSD some. What is here is a nice slow story.

Best yet

Unexpected powers. Read 17/5- 18/5/17.
Review. Book4 in the series, it starts at Alex's rescue and carries on the time line from there, incorporating all of the previous characters nicely. Because of Ash's severe PTSD, I like how this story took place over many months and was delicately handled. The romance between Ash and D was lovely to watch develop. Alex's powers were a surprise and I would love to see how powerful he can become. It was good to see Gerome still fighting for equality and hopefully winning. ( we didn't go that far in this book) Overall, I would definitely recommend this book and indeed the series to anyone that likes a good love story with adventure and Paranormal brings. Oh and mpreg of course.

**ARC RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW**
This is Ash and D's story whom we met in the previous books and what a story it is!
We see how Ash comes to terms with what happened to him previously, see a strong friendship develop between him and D and also more...........
This was a really well written story with a great story line that I really enjoyed. I loved the twist and how it slowly came in to play for Ash. It was also great that we got to catch up with the other characters too.
Overall an easy but interesting read.

Unexpected Powers is book 4 in the Unexpected series.
Ash was rescued from an abusive Elder, he is suffering from depression and PDST. The more he hangs out with D strange things start to happen.
D is a tracker that rescued Ash. The is just something about Ash that draws him.
D is so very sweet with sh giving him the time he needs to heal. Encouraging him to get help and and just there for him.
Their romance is slow but oh so sweet when they get there.
I received a copy for an honest review.

Unexpected Powers is the forth book in the Unexpected series by Chris McHart. I am loving this series more and more. The main characters in this story are are Ash and D who saved him from an abusive mate in the last book. There are some big surprises that happen in this story. I love the characters in this series. The storyline in this book is fantastic again! I can't wait for another book in this series! They just keep getting better and better! Definitely a must read series!

This is the 4th book in the Unexpected series & I really enjoyed it. I loved that there were updates on characters from the previous books. I thought D and Ash were very interesting and the twists and turns in their relationship kept me interested. This was as well written as the other 3 books in the series and I highly recommend reading all of them. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Ash and D's story is my favorite in this series. Ash has so many obstacles to overcome and everyone should have a partner as patient as D. Their story is one of friendship, trust, love, and discovering who you are when you have someone to nurture and encourage that discovery. Ash's journey to learning just how strong he really is was a pleasure to read.

I didn’t know how much I was looking forward to book 4 in this series until I read it. I love that there was some history, a secondary romance and a few twists in the story. I also love going back to other characters in the series. I totally enjoyed this story and would absolutely recommend it – also the rest of the series.

This is definitely a book that requires the rest of the series to be as rich and full as it was intended, but that's not exactly a hardship. This particular love story was sweet, slow and gentle, as it needed to be for the characters involved. It was a bit predictable at times, but not agonizingly so. Just occasionally.
I look forward to seeing if there will be any further books in this series.

Wow

What a powerful love story. I usually don’t read paranormal book but this one got to me. I fell in love with the characters especially Ash who was so hurt and abused, I just wanted to hug him. I was surprised about the location of the book since that is where I’m from so I was very familiar with the sites.

Interesting Premise, Poor Execution

I wasn't able to finish the book. Outdated or incorrect idioms, incorrect grammar, incorrect word usage, and stilted dialogue were significant and consistent problems.

This book has a lovely story line and you can get lost in when you read. This is a story about Ash and D. I found their relationship built slowly but there was an automatic trust that surprises Ash. Ash has been abused and trusts not high on his agenda. D feels something for him but knows he can't push Ash and at times he fears Ash will never see the real D. I really enjoyed this book and I think you will too.

Although the plot sounded interesting and this got glowing reviews, I was not able to finish it. I found the writing to be extremely clunky and amateurish. It seemed to be a recitation of every act a person was doing rather than a flowing narrative. I could tell that it was meant to be very emotional but the wooden delivery kept me from connecting with the characters at all. I got it through KU so maybe at some point I'll go back to it.
