The ISIS Caliphate: From Syria to the Doorsteps of India

Rate this book
The rapid rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria was almost like a fairy tale. A group that was unheard of in early 2013 captured territories as big as Great Britain by 2014 June, effectively erasing the border between Iraq and Syria. It announced a Caliphate, drew in thousands of fighters and supporters from across the world, including India, launched attacks in nations from Brussels to Bangladesh and earned loyalties of local militant groups in conflict-ridden states such as Nigeria, Libya, Afghanistan and Pakistan. By the end of 2014, ISIS had transformed itself into a global force of terror. ISIS Caliphate tells the story of this phenomenon. Based on primary sources and interviews, the book explores the geopolitical, organisational and ideological roots of ISIS and narrates how the group has spread its wings from its core in Iraq and Syria to the peripheries of India and Pakistan.

ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് Stanly Johny-യുടെ "The ISIS Caliphate: From Syria to the Doorsteps of India" എന്ന ചെറുപുസ്തകം അനാവരണം ചെയ്യാൻ ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുന്നത്.

Author's expertise on the issue is very evident in the book. In two parts the book tries to analyse the ideological foundation of ISIS and how we need more than military power to quell the challenge it poses. It has an Indian perspective in a dedicated chapter which is a very interesting part of the book for Indian readers. The book has a detailed endnotes section which consolidates published article and references on the issue. Thats the sign of a work which is borne out of thorough research. If one is really interested about knowing the Islamic State away from all the rhetoric that is doing rounds in the public discourse, I would say this is a must read. And don't forget to track down the endnotes, they would do your knowledge a world of good.

The World's most potent terrorist machinery : ISIS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Everybody's worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there's a really easy way: stop participating in it.

- Noam Chomsky

The ISIS Caliphate, From Syria to the doorsteps of India, is a meticulously researched book on the most dreaded terrorist organization the world has ever seen, The Islamic State Of Iraq and Syria (ISIS or Daesh). And in this book the author revealed that how ISIS came into its being, about its ideology, and what makes it different from the other jihadi organizations.

And before I write on this topic, one thing which I have to admit that this book is only for no-nonsense readers. Otherwise, you will bang your head on the wall.

Terrorism and killing innocent people in the name of God is not a new phenomenon, in fact it is going on continuously from ages, but the world powers wake up from their deep slumber when the horrific incident of 9/11 happened in the USA. And afterwards the United States and its allies started the so-called 'Global War On Terror' (GWOT), and it started with the invasion of Afghanistan by the united states in 2001 to capture the Al-Qaida Chief, Osama Bin Laden, then the invasion of Iraq in 2003 to remove Saddam Hussein from power, and the other adventures in the Middle East.

So here the important question arises that the GWOT achieved anything substantial? Or The Planet Earth is now safe from those Monsters whom we call as jihadis?

In my opinion the answer of these questions is neither positive nor negative, but somewhere in between. Because terrorism is an ideology, and you can't bomb an ideology.

But sadly the global powers haven't understood the concept of terrorism till now, and they are pursuing the policy of 'One-Size-fits-all', especially in the 'Middle East' region, which is ethnically very diverse, and one bad political decision can engulf the whole region.

So we can say that because of the illogical and irrational policies of the major world powers, these jihadist organizations came into its being.

In fact the ideological founder of the ISIS was a man by the name of, Abu Musab Al-zarqawi, who dreamed of establishing a Caliphate which is ruled by the Sharia. But in 2006 he was killed in an American air strike in Iraq. But as they say that 'Dreams Never Die'. Zarqawi was the man who established the Al-Qaeda in Iraq, which later broke away from its parental organization and renamed itself as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-baghdadi. And it was baghdadi who fulfilled the dream of zarqawi by capturing vast amount of land in the State of Iraq and Syria, and declared himself as the caliph.

Though we have to keep in mind that ISIS was formed as a breakaway faction of Al-Qaeda. But there are several differences between these two jihadist organizations. Like ISIS believes in an asymmetric as well as conventional warfare, unlike Al-Qaeda, which is a hit-and-run terrorist organization. Al-Qaeda never captured any territory, unlike ISIS.

But there is one similarity amongst all these jihadi organizations be it ISIS, Al-Qaeda or Boko haram, that they are influenced by the puranitical Salafi version of Islam.

As the top leadership of Al-Qaeda had either been killed or captured by the United States, and with the killing of the Osama Bin Laden in 2011, in Abbottabad, Pakistan, Al-Qaeda almost became a defunct organization, unlike ISIS, which is an ideology.

In fact the online propaganda of ISIS is so successful that it attracted thousands of youngsters worldwide who fled from their homes for this absurd ideology. Physically ISIS is shrinking and losing its foothold in Iraq and Syria, but ideologically it is still here.

At last, I will end this with these lines-

'You can't defeat an ideology, but you can subdue its harmful effects'.

This book is not everyone's cup of tea, but if you enjoy reading about Geopolitics and especially about the Middle East, then you can surely go for this book. The language of this book is very easy, and the writing style of the author is very good, in fact within a few hundred pages he unravelled the whole story.

My Ratings : ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)

I hope you like this, thanks for reading, Jai Hind.

ISIS Caliphate is an excellent introduction to jihadist groups and the ideologies that move them. The book is divided into Core and Periphery, chronicling how the core of the Islamic State evolved in the background of political instability in Afghan, Iraq and Syria and how it spawned followers/fanatics in the periphery. The book takes a long and hard look at how Salafist jihadism runs as a common thread underneath the major Islamist extremist uprisings of the 20th and 21st century - Taliban, Quaeda, ISIS.

The book is detailed and well-sourced, and makes quite an interesting read. It is a must-have for those interested in Middle East politics and religion extremism.

The book was written in 2017 and published in 2018. A lot more developments have occurred related to ISIS and other jihadist groups. ISIS Caliphate could be updated about those developments too, as this book is such a good one-stop destination for all your jihadiat groups queries.

A very informative book on the topic.
I was looking for an account on the history of Salafism and its connections with Wahabism, and the section - `pious forefathers` have been a nice introduction.

A section on Marawi and an analysis of the East Asian youth - one Korean guy leaving home to Syria, not sure if it is propaganda - would have been a great addition to the book and would have opened additional perspectives to analyze on ISIS's ideology and growth.

Having watched ‘The Kerala Story’ and its highly dramatic approach towards the issue of Love Jihad and conversions, I thought of reading something that gave me a factual and to the point insight on the topic and picked this book. I must say the book did not disappoint me.

The book tries to trace the origin of ‘ISIS Caliphate’ with its historical underpinnings, how various Caliphate existed in the past and the connection with Salafism & Wahabism. The book also touches upon the story of Keralites converting to Islam and migrating to Syria. While it features the interviews of various intelligence officers and parents of these terrorists, it doesn’t have a first hand account or interview of these terrorists. On that topic, the depth is kind of missing.

But it is a good book to learn about the beginning of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, the role played by USA,Saudi Arabia axis and the bigger question of whether the shrinking physical space of ISIS marks its end or not.

Should read for educative purposes!

This is a serious and informative read that helps the reader understand how ISIS rose, ruled territory, and eventually declined. The book focuses more on explaining the movement and its structure than on sensationalism, which makes it feel grounded and thoughtful.

What stands out is the clear way complex events are explained. The author connects politics, ideology, and conflict in a way that is easy to follow, even for readers who are not experts in Middle Eastern history. The tone stays analytical and calm, helping the reader learn rather than react emotionally.

Overall, the book feels useful for anyone who wants to understand how extremist movements can grow when conditions allow it. It doesn’t glorify ISIS, but instead helps the reader see the warning signs, mistakes, and consequences behind the idea of a so‑called caliphate.

This is one the most anticipated works of Stanley Johny that I wanted to read, but sadly it didn't reach my expectation. The book provides accounts of the ideological spread of ISIS from Raqqa to the Indian subcontinent due to puritanical Salafism as a catalyst.

The author has done a splendid job in providing points regarding the spread of Salafism or Wahhabism in the Arabian peninsula depicting the history of three previous Wahhabi Caliphate.

The main crux of the book is the answer to the million dollar question, "How do people from different diversities get attracted to the brutal ideology which itself is a threat to their lives ?", but the author relies on news articles and journalist reports and fails to provide something more concrete.

What turned out to be a huge disappointment is the contents regarding the 21 people who travelled from Kerala to join ISIS. Being a native of the place, the author could have provided extensive journalism regarding the reported missing.

The silver lining is that this book is a pie in the face for makers and believers of propaganda films like 'The Kerala Story'. This book is highly recommended for people who want to know the truth rather than believing distorted facts.

This is one of the best and simple books I have read on this topic. The authors experiences as an academic scholar and a journalist is very evident in the book. This book clearly narrates the socio-political-ideological premises that led to the formation of ISIS and its threat to humanity. This book really conveyed the authors view that " ISIS basically represents the darker side of the human civilisation". A must read for political activists and students in this field.

The book is a result of a research carried out meticulously. Starting from the history of middle east Asia, it takes you through the history of Islam to the twentyfirst century. While maintaining a well balanced standpoint Stanly analyses the genesis and growth of the terrorist organisations and how they make inroads to Western world and India. The end notes provide authentic and comprehensive information and references. Highly recommended.

The book is pretty thin on content. It just keeps listing out facts that are available in newspapers and does a poor job of analysing the various geopolitical events.

A boring read altogether. Skip it.

Completed reading first book of the year, @johnstanly 's The ISIS Caliphate. I don't recall reading the word terrorism or terrorist in the book which I believe is actually not an euphemism, rather the substitutes and overall conveys the gravitas of the world envisaged by ISIS.
