Told in delightful verse and charming illustrations, "86 The Legend of the Boston Red Sox" is a "Casey at the Bat" for the 21st century. Sure to become a classic, it is a treasure for every generation, for generations to come.
It is hard to describe the 2004 comeback to someone who wasn't there, but this book comes close. The chance to get what the city had wanted for nearly a century...which had come close before, only to slip through its fingers...and in this instance, the odds seemed daunting.
The suspense, excitement, and euphoria all come roaring back through this nostalgic story.
What is harder to explain is the way that, in becoming champions and shaking off the curse, Boston lost a teeny bit of grit (fans stuck by the team through every imaginable frustration, near miss, and catastrophic fail). Lest the legend be forgotten amid the hubris of multiple World Series wins in the time since, we have this story.
There is also a great lesson about tenacity in here.
We read this as a class! Ironic considering it's the first game of the season. Aside from the great content (shoot - I'm becoming a Bostonian so fast!) the rhyme of the story is fantastic. Very cleverly written.
