It's 1924 and spiritualist-medium Daisy Gumm and her fiancé, Detective Sam Rotondo, discover a dead body tucked away in the Pasadena Public Library's bibliography stacks.
Worse, Daisy's old friend, Mr. Browning, is holding the bloody knife, putting him at the very top of Sam's suspect list.
But Daisy is not convinced, and sets out to exonerate her friend, only to stumble into a professor's geological study, encounter a mad scientist, and uncover a phony gold rush that someone is killing to hide.
The eleventh book in this entertaining and amusing series. Daisy's fiancee Homicide Detective Sam Rotondo is on desk duty as he is recovering from the gun shot wound. He accompanied Daisy on her library run to fetch new books. While there, they find a woman's bloody body in the stacks. A worthy friend, Mr Browning, of Daisy is standing nearby holding a bloody knife. She decides to clear her friend and find him a wife. Her friend, Gladys wants to prevent the murder from becoming a scandal that will damaged her husband's reputation. Against San wishes Daisy will try to help her friends. I recommend this book and series.
A trip to the library for Daisy and Sam takes a most unsettled turn when a young woman is found murdered in the stacks. When an old friend from school Robert Browning (not the poet) is singled out as the prime suspect Daisy decides to do some snooping. As it turns out all the people involved also work at or go to school at CalTech. Daisy’s old school mate Gladys Fellowes whose husband works at the schools calls her for help giving Daisy the perfect opportunity to get all the suspects in one place at one time for Sam to get the murderer. As usual nothing goes quite to plan but we are treated to an amusing mystery story. Daisy has an uncanny ability to get into the most ridiculous situations that somehow always lead to a solution to a crime. And we still have plenty of shenanigans with Mrs. P as a bonus. A wonderful book in a wonderful series. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
Spirits United (A Daisy Gumm Majesty Mystery, Book 12) (33 chapters) — Alice Duncan July 27-30, 2021
Sam’s nephew Frank unexpectedly shows up and starts making havoc for everyone with his sticky fingers. Also, Miss Petrie falls for Daisy’s old school chum, Robert Browning, but first, she needs to solve a murder that happens in the library while she and Sam are there and that puts Robert at the top of the list when he is caught holding the blood knife over a dead woman. Meanwhile, Sam’s juju necklace is rather informative when he is near bad guys.
This is a great mystery. The author still likes to pad the story, as it were, with the repeated statements throughout the book. And the book is self-published so the editing is shaky at times, but still, if you have read all the books so far in the series, you should be used to it by now.
I've been reading this series from its beginning and I always enjoy the adventures of fake spiritualist Daisy and her family. Theses are "cosy" mysteries, light and nostalgic. The author creates the 1920s atmosphere just after WW1 and before the depression beautifully and her characters are growing a bit (Sam actually laughed and smiled, I didn't think he knew how!) The mystery itself is almost meaningless, it's the characters and how they interact with Daisy that make the story. Daisy is a bit like her dachshund, cute and friendly, but a determined Hunter and digger with a need to know. My only complaint, and it's minor is that there is too much inane description of every meal, every outfit, and every book checked out of the library - some of it was relevant, but some of it felt like filler. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
Daisy and Sam become embroiled in another murder, this time at the local library. Daisy can't seem to stay away from dead bodies, and Sam is still recovering from his gunshot wound. We are introduced to Sam's hooligan nephew, Frank, who ran away from his home in New York and is stunned to learn there is a world outside his Italian Catholic upbringing. His thievery and lack of manners keeps Sam on his toes and his remedies are quite hilarious at times. Daisy is helps her friend at the library learn a few tricks to beautify herself, and again, Daisy is in the right place at the right time to help Sam solve the murder.
Always a fun read. Descriptions of the food, habits, and clothing of the 20s era is always a delight to read about.
A good fun read. Loved the brash, self centred Frank and hope he's in more stories. Plus the fact that she played cupid to her favourite librarian. But now she has to find someone for her rich friend, Miss Castleton. Sam's recovering from the gunshot wound and accompanies her to the library only for the pair to come across a dead body. A former librarian, who has been stabbed to death. Her old friend Gladys wants her to investigate the murder, Mrs P is having fits about the upcoming trial for her daughter and Sam's nephew comes into town as his sticky fingers have gotten him into trouble with the local gangsters. Add another death, a project that is being tapered with and the normal turmoil that is Daisy. Will they find the killer?
As Sam recuperates from his injuries Daisy takes him to the library to meet Miss Petrie, her favourite librarian who saves the new releases for Daisy and her family.
A scream echoes around the usually quiet building and once again Daisy appears to be in the thick of it as far as Sam's concerned as they find the body of the former librarian with a stab wound. Daisy's friend Richard Browning then appears with a knife in his hand looking confused and knowing that he wouldn't be guilty no matter how it looks she can't keep her nose out of Sam's investigation.
It's 1924 and Daisy Gumm Majesty's fiance Detective Sam Rotondo has accompanied her to the Pasadena Public Library to resupply her family of voracious readers. This quotidian outing is interrupted by the discovery of a murdered librarian among the biographies.
This is a delightful cozy mystery with food by Daisy's Aunt Vi, an excellent cook, and the fashions by Daisy herself, an accomplished seamstress. An enjoyable read, highly recommended.
I don't know how she does it. I've read other series that run out of gas about the third book, but Alice Duncan's series just keeps chuggin' along. Each one seems as fresh and entertaining as the first. I'm so involved with Daisy, I worry about her sometime. Looks like she's headed for the altar, and I wonder how her new husband is going to like her continuing to work as a medium/spiritualist/amateur sleuth?
Oh, well, I'll just have to trust Alice Duncan to work things out.
I am really enjoying the Daisy mysteries. There is always a great adventure happening in these stories. I love Daisy and her family, they are all beautifully written characters. As far as solving the mysteries, I never even come close to figuring out why or who the culprit is. I'm having so much fun with this series and now on to number thirteen.
I enjoy all the Daisy and Mercy books. Once you get started reading each series you get to know the main characters and care about what happens to them. The '20's were years with a lot going on. Alice brings in many issues that are still pertinent today, such as domestic violence, racism and homophobia, human trafficking, and the after effects of war. Her humor and the mysteries themselves keep my interest. I highly recommend Alice's books.
daisy and sam were in the library when a woman was murdered. turns out people from cal tech were getting murdered. sams no good nephew from ny was there, sam tried to straighten him out but never succeeded. he was finally sent home at the end, though he did help in holding the murderer down so daisy could get sam to arrest him at a Halloween party.

I just love this cozy mystery series. It’s light hearted and breezy enough that reading it when life is a bit grey really perks you up but the mystery and the 1920’s history keeps you interested without dragging you down. Daisy and her fiancé Sam end up at the scene of the murder and set about solving it while dealing with academics, a kleptomaniac, and a bum leg.
Another great mystery solved! As always, I enjoyed the book greatly. I do love the fact that Sam is starting to be more affectionate towards Daisy and I honestly can’t wait until they get married. Another great story!

I've written a number of reviews expressing my love of this series. Few writers can create the feeling of intimacy between their narrator and the reader that Ms. Duncan achieves. The little asides, the interjections give a conversational vibe to the books. There is also a nice dose of humor threading through. I am sad that I am slowly approaching the last entry currently available.
I adore the 1920s elements in each book. The history is fascinating, and I am fine with all the talk of Vi’s food and Daisy’s sewing, but I am glad to read less about each. I do think Frank comes off a little too broken rather than maniacal, but it’s only because this is my third go round with this series. 😉
Alice Duncan writes with hysterical wit, I laughed my way through this entire book. Okay, the death (it is a murder mystery) wasn't too funny but the author's way of writing, and the way she explains everything is hilarious.
Join Daisy Majesty on another mad cap adventure as she ends up organising a Hallow'een party for one of her friends, where scientists and professors are the suspects in Sam's latest case .
It should be a 4 1/2 but I don,t know how to do that! I laughed many times especially when Sam cuffed Frank on the head. I ordered the next 2 books right away. What happens when there are no more?
Another fun encounter with Daisy and assorted friends and family. The usual interaction with her clients, as a spiritualist medium, leads Daisy to help solve yet another Pasadena murder --mich to the chagrin of her fiance and family.
As usual, our resident amateur sleuth, Daisy Gumm Majesty, stumbles into a murder investigation. Try as he might, Daisy's fiance, Detective Sam Rotondo, cannot convince her to let the police solve the crime. Of course, she doesn't listen and continues to "look into" the crime. Eventually, Daisy and Sam bring the killer to justice.
I received a copy of this book from ebook discovery in exchange for a freely given honest review.
Follow Daisy and her fiance as they try to prove their friends innocence in not one but two murders that at first do not seem linked especially when the first murder victim was the old librarian.
Once again the characters are well written and come alive as your read. Although following the series from the start will give you a bit more behind the scenes information on Daisy and her circle of friends, the books are able to be read as a stand alone and still a joy.
Reading the stories will bring a glimpse of days of yore into your life and make you nostalgic for simpler times and thankful at the same time.
