The first comprehensive, fully-illustrated approach to the voice that explains the anatomy and mechanics in detailed yet down-to-earth terms, for voice users and professionals of all kindsThis book is the first to explain, in clear and concise language, the anatomy and mechanics of the mysterious and complex bodily system we call the voice. Beautifully illustrated with more than 100 detailed images, Anatomy of the Voice guides voice teachers and students, vocal coaches, professional singers and actors, and anyone interested in the voice through the complex landscape of breathing, larynx, throat, face, and jaw. Theodore Dimon, an internationally recognized authority on the subject, as well as an expert in the Alexander Technique, makes unfamiliar terrain accessible and digestible by describing each vocal system in short, manageable sections and explaining complex terminology. The topics he covers include ribs, diaphragm, and muscles of breathing; the intrinsic musculature of the larynx, its structure and action; the suspensory muscles of the throat; the face and jaw; the tongue and palate; and the evolution and function of the larynx.
Theodore Dimon Jr. received both masters and doctorate degrees in education from Harvard University and is an internationally renowned teacher of mind/body disciplines. He has written five books including Anatomy of the Moving Body; The Body in Motion; Your Body, Your Voice; The Elements of Skill; and The Undivided Self. He lectures internationally and teaches at The Dimon Institute and Columbia Teachers College.
Dimon's in-depth anatomy is an invaluable exploration and tool for all those interested in voice. Though the book is dense reading, the writing is clear and engaging with many excellent diagrams. It helps if you have a foundation in human anatomy but the book explains everything clearly so this foundation is not necessary -- just be prepared to spend some time with the diagrams and text. Besides an in-depth presentation of the muscles, ligaments, bones, and cartilages of the Head and neck involved in the voice, the book includes a chapter on the evolution of this anatomy. The book concludes with a short epilogue which summaries the major points of the text. There is also an index.
I read this book because I am taking voice lessons and I teach human anatomy and physiology. I found this treatment excellent and helpful. I will be keeping the book for reference. Highly recommended for those serious about voice.
Disappointing I did not find enough information concretely useful for singers, my original intent I think it gets caught up in too much detail, losing in the process most readers who would be interested by the subject... assuming author intends to educate singers & vocal coaches and not doctors
