The Little Prince is apparently now a cartoon hero? Well, of course I had to check this out. It seems that in this imagining, the Little Prince uses stardust magic to turn notebook pages into animals and magic carpets, and he's on a journey around the universe with his friend the Fox to combat the Snake and be reunited with his Rose. So you recognize the characters by name, but maybe not by their actions (the Snake most of all - here he's some kind of evil genius bent on destroying the world. Not what I envisioned of the poignant, powerful snake in the original book).
This is the fifth book in the series, and I'm coming into it ignorant of the others, but fortunately the book begins with a little blurb about each character so you can read this all by itself. :)
The story is quite simplistic: the Little Prince visits a planet whose plants are dying because an outcast member of the village has been hoarding stars out of the sky and thereby dimming the plant-growing light. The Little Prince must persuade Antoine (Antoine!) to put the stars back in the sky for all to enjoy. Meanwhile, the Snake hisses in Antoine's other ear and befuddles him. There's some nonsensical action, and in the end all is well - for this chapter of the quest. (What was the quest again?) Sadly, the essential feeling of each character, including the Little Prince's mystique and trenchant naiveté, the fox's sage views, the rose's delicate ego... these seem to have been lost along the way. But the art in this book is beauuuuuutiful!
So 3 stars for the story, but 4 stars for the gorgeous art :)
Graphic Novel- This is a great book for your students who are just learning to read. The story is engaging, the dialogue is easily understood, and the simple plot can used to clearly teach all elements of a story.
