Alone. Caged. Her only freedom will be in death...
Captured as a chick, Sula can barely remember life outside her cage. Her tears, feathers and blood have been stolen until she's a pale shadow of the Phoenix she's meant to be. She prays for the sweet release of death, expecting it when her owner's warehouse is attacked.
What she doesn't expect is the big male with the midnight eyes who rescues her, taking her home thinking she's a pet bird, or her reaction to his gentle touch and the scent of his dragon. After so many years, can she trust another... and reveal the truth about herself in the process?
>A dragon on a mission, he'll stop at nothing to destroy the slavers plaguing shifter society...
And they don't come more in need than the little bird Damian discovers huddled in a box on his latest mission. A black dragon, he's responsible for the protection of dragonkind and by extension, all shifters, and he hates those who trade in paranormal artifacts with a passion.
He's never taken any of them home, but the wide, golden eyes of the little bird hit him on a soul-deep level. The need to care for her and nurse her back to health overwhelm both him and his dragon, a need he doesn't understand until he finds a naked woman in his kitchen. A naked woman with very familiar golden eyes...
But Sula's masters haven't given up on the profit she'll bring them and they track her down to Damian's apartment. When they take her, can he get to her in time, or will he lose his fated mate before they have a chance at their happily ever after?

Oct 2022 review: I absolutely adored this 😍
Sula is such a warrior! I love how much she thrives in Damian’s care. I was cracking up at the cake scene! I only wish this was longer because I did not want it to end!!
3.5 stars. In this world, shifters are out and the h has been brutalised for her special elements. She's lived in her shifted form for years and her rescuer, the H makes her feel safe. He knows she's sweet, but she's so damaged he doesn't know what she is. I liked this book but would have liked a more alpha H. It was all a little too sweet.
There was a lot packed in to this novella and I really enjoyed it. It was easy to read with a lot of depth and feelings. It felt like a complete story which isn't always the case in a shorter book.
If you love protective, powerful dragons, I'm sure you'll love this too. Damian was gorgeous and so was the little featherless bird he rescued from a cruel, brutal captivity. Sula was beautiful and I loved how she grew in confidence and trust from the very scared but sweet little bird the longer she spent with the caring dragon shifter.
Sweet and sexy, this was a lovely story about healing, love and trust. Really enjoyed it and it's true, the power of cake is real folks! 😊
Reading the blurb I really wanted to read this! I was like awww this is going to be a sweet one! Heh I was right! I loved this story and Sula and Damian were so damn cute! I fell in love with both!
Damian's a black dragon and his mission is to find shifter slaves who are sadly captured by other shifters. He's disgusted and its he's determined to rescue and find the bastards responsible.
Sula has been in a cage since she was a little chick. She's a Phoenix who are rare and is slowly dying. She's never experienced the world and is very sweet. All she knows is pain and sadness. Then Damian finds her and she is NOT letting him go. Will he feel the same once he finds out what she is or will her captors find her first?
Do yourself a favour and read this book. Though this can be read as a standalone very well, it is more fun if you have read the previous book. I was so glad when Ms Carter expanded HUNTING FOR A DRAGON DUKE into a series. This book proves it was a good decision. Damian is exactly what one would expect from a Black Dragon and I loved how he treated Sula so carefully even before he knew she was a shifter. It is rare that a book makes me run a gamut of emotions. I have not had a book make me feel so sad I want to cry and yet at the same time make me smile and feel frivolous. What horrors Sula has been through boggle the mind but to read about her enjoyment in something as simple as chocolate cake, eating and wearing it, well it makes you appreciate what you have even more. This is my honest review of this book.
This was a sweet and heartbreaking story. Sula and Damien made such a good couple and you can’t help but smile at their interactions. The chocolate cake bits were hilarious. Great read!
Good storyline, just wish it was longer. Needed a little bit more development between the main characters. Love Mina Carters books and will read one of the books mentioned at the end.
Sula was captured very soon after her hatching by horrible shifters who sold their own kind. Slavery, parts, nothing was beneath them in the pursuit of money. Her feathers plucked, tortured for her tears, starved for compliance, by the time rescue came she resembled a tiny parrot with severe molting issues. Taken home by her rescuer she finds that there are decent shifters in the world. Especially as this one supplies her with chocolate cake. Being a black dragon means protecting other shifters, even with ridiculous rumors about snacking on them abounding. When Damien's dragon starts chanting "ours" he brings the tiny bald bird home. Not sure why his dragon wants to keep it, he does recognize it as some sort of shifter and decides to pacify the egg hoarding reptile with this creature until they can find out what it is and nurse it back to health. No one prepared him for a cake thieving phoenix. But the kidnappers aren't going to give up such a valuable prize so easily.
This, while very short for that $3 pricetag, was a cute story. Just over 90 pages, the others were to promote other books by the author. Sweet, more so than the chocolate cake, and lasts about as long as a read as cake would last in the presence of a starving female. There is more hinted at in the story, other characters mentioned and talked to that I feel are probably in books related to this story line. But there is no order, no numbers, to indicate this. I don't mind stand alones that are related but this has the feel of something more of a series, just without it distinctly saying so. And while a cute and sweet tale I'm not sure that a $3 charge per each rather short book is worth looking for the rest and then trying to figure out the order to read them in. I do have a question though, if she's a phoenix shifter why does she have burn scars? I could understand the scars from cuts, deformed wings from broken bones (although that was never mentioned even if it would fit some of the abuse recalled). But isn't fire healing? It was a question that pulled me out of the story.
Sula is a phoenix shifter who has been held in captivity and harvested for her blood, feathers and tears nearly her entire life (5 years - although she's actually an adult now). She's rescued by Damian Black, black dragon shifter who is doing his best to eradicate the trafficking of shifters, Sula included. When he first finds her, she looks like a bald parrot and he's not sure if she's male or female, shifter or not. But Sula finds a place in his heart real quick. As she learns to trust him, she eventually reveals herself to be a shifter and his mate. But the people who owned Sula before want her back and will kill a black dragon to get her.
I want to eat chocolate cake the way these people do and never gain a single pound. I'm dying with jealousy... I was a bit uncomfortable with the idea of such a innocent and naive woman being sexualized...I mean, Sula is basically only 5 years old and her only life experience is the abuse she's endured and what she's seen on TV. It eased me into comfort that Damian was such a damn decent guy who did everything he could to earn Sula's trust and didn't take things too far until Sula was absolutely ready (and even that was just a kiss). It isn't until after she's "rejuvenated" and she basically "matures" that things become rather more sexual, but it no longer feels like Sula is so child-like. So...I liked this, but didn't love the fact that Sula was as innocent as she was. YMMV. Mostly I think my favorite part was watching a big, badass dragon fall in love with an adorable, squawky little bird shifter - it's pretty fluffy and sweet. Things get decidedly more angsty there towards the end. But I also wanted a longer ending...this was a pretty abrupt one.

Sula was taken when she was only a few months old and has been used for the last five years as a valuable commodity. She is a rare Phoenix shifter so her captors take feathers, blood, tears to sell. She has not shifted to human for fear they will know she is now an adult. Sula longs for her freedom. She has never been able to fly. Damian Black is a Black Dragon and he and his teammates hunt the shifters who would sell their own kind for profit. Damian's dragon has scented Sula in the warehouse he and his team have just raided to rescue the shifters that are being held there and his dragon has told him when he finds Sula that she is theirs to look after. Sula has never known kindness or warmth and Damian is giving her both, she is about to make sure he keeps her. Damian is not sure if Sula is just a bird or really a shifter she is so small and his dragon is acting strange around the little bird and Damian feels very protective of her. Marcus the shifter who originally captured Sula and killed her parents is not about to let his valuable little bird get away from him and nothing will stop him from retrieving her. Thank you to Mina Carter and J Thompson for the wonderful review copy . Totally entertaining from start to finish.
~This voluntary take is of a copy sent from the author, because I am part of her ARC Team, and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair. ~
This is a very sweet book.
The way the people in the book responded to each of the situation was so sweet and after the way Sula suffered, it made up of all the pain she got.
I am actually lost for words on how to express how I like this book. The only reason for not having a 5 star is because, I wanted to read more about the couple. Just like the White Queen and Sawyer.
The way the his Dragon and his unhealthy obsession with a Faberge egg was something else, so is the love for anything sweet. It was such a nice touch that a man with such a physique would have one heck of a sweet tooth.
Mina Carter has a magical way when it comes to writing these quick reads stories. It to the point and satisfying. There is a certain anticipation on who will be featured on her next book and in what series it would fall into. I look forward to reading more of her books.
Damian and his team are hunters of a very different kind. They are after those who traffic in shifters as slaves. Searching for these bottom feeders leads him to a warehouse where he finds the distressing sight of a small bird, almost bald. he rescues the bird and takes it home with him.
But this black dragon is turned on its head when the little bald bird eventually recuperates enough to shift back into her human form. Sula can only vaguely remember her family. She was taken from them and placed in a cage. She has had her phoenix feathers plucked, her tears stored and taken away, all so that someone can make a fast buck.
I loved that Damian for all his outward badassness and growly dragon inside is a kind hearted, level headed and empathetic male. He doesn't want any harm to come to Sula and would die rather than have any harm come to her. Sula feels safe with Damian but realistically takes her time to show him her human self until she can better make her escape if she read him wrong. Great little read!
Sula has known nothing but pain and degradation throughout her life. But when a rescue frees her can she step into the light? I really enjoyed meeting Sula in this story by J. Thompson and Mina Carter. Sula is such a strong female character even if she doesn't realize it. She has survive where many have not. She has fought as much as she is able never giving up. And then she meets Damian. Damian is kind and strong. Two qualities that make Sula feel secure. I love that without knowing it Damian has provided Sula with something she needs. Something that allows her the time to get her bearings and spread her wings. I loved seeing the joy Sula found and the joy Damian found in caring for her. The romance between Damian and Sula was sweet almost innocent which I appreciated. I loved seeing Sula accept and trust in Damian. I love that Damian gave Sula the time to trust in him. This story was a quick read but enjoyable. I look forward to returning to this world in the future.
The story is very short for my liking, it felt like it ended just when it was getting interesting, also all the random names of the characters specially Black dragons which we know nothing about and we don't see is just not required. If you want to be vague be completely vague... I kept waiting for meeting the characters but the story abruptly ended. Sula is a phoenix but has been used for her tears, blood and feathers and caged her whole life. she resembles a bald parrot at the start of the book.
I really enjoyed the starting chapters where Damien and Sula spend time together and even after her shape shifting into human Damien gives her time to get used to him.
I just wanted a description of Sula's phoenix is its full beauty. I wanted to know what else she could accomplish with a cherishing, gentle and sweet mate and her growth in self confidence.
Mina caught me and had me almost from the very beginning of this book. I love dragon's so I was all on it.
Damian is that hot sexy shifter doing good to rescue enslaved shifters. A huge black himself he's nothing to brush off and gets the job done.
Sula well dang your heart just cant help but go out to the little sweety I just adored her and her love for chocolate. (smiles)
The bad men are just that bad to the bone, but Damian will show them the evilness of their ways, and when things get tight not only will the bad men be shocked but so will our sexy black. Stand by to stand by right.
Mina Carter did an amazing job with the storyline, the characters personalities melding with danger and hot scenes. Well worth the read. I loved it. Enjoy
I’m actually disappointed 😞 I loved the beginning of the book, the premise was great, Sula is adorable and Damien is awesome, I laughed when Sula was in bird form. But I paid over $3 for this book which ended so quickly, it was way too short, not only for the price but for the story as well. There were loose ends I felt just were rushed along and not given the attention they deserved, not to mention once she shifted into human form the book raced toward the ending with nearly no time for the two to explore their bond and relationship. 3 Stars for the sweetness of the characters, but definitely upset that the book wasn’t longer and that it cost so much for what was such a short read.
A sweet book filed with laughter and the tears of a taken Phoenix chick on the brink of death. She's been raised only by terrible men out to take her feathers and tears that heal. A Phoenix, is most prized possession, they'll even take her bones once she's dead. Along comes the Dragon that is freeing the slaved shifters. Your gonna love this book. The story is just starting, he takes the bald parrot (Phoenix) home. I
Him and his Dragon just know they have to protect the poor bald thing, it might just be a parrot instead of a shifter. And then she gets close to his chocolate cake. After coming from the shower, waiting to eat his favorite chocolate cake; he sees the parrot covered in icing making snow (chocolate) angels looking very happy.
Give it a try you'll be glad you did.

Dragon Fire and Phoenix Ash is an absolutely captivating read that kept me hooked from beginning to end. The author has created a rich and vivid world filled with powerful emotions, unforgettable characters, and a storyline that burns with intensity and passion. I was especially impressed by the depth of the characters and how their journeys felt both magical and deeply human. The writing is beautifully descriptive, making every scene come alive, and the balance between action and emotion is perfectly done. This is a story of resilience, transformation, and the power of rising again—just like a phoenix. A truly memorable book that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves immersive and meaningful storytelling.
There is a real sweetness to how this very powerful dragon takes care of the bird he rescues. He has no idea she is really a phoenix shifter. She has not had any one to protect her before and really responds to his kindness.
I enjoyed watching them fall for each other. She suffered so much and he takes joy in protecting her. He sees beyond the scars and gives them both hope for a future.
It is easy to fall for this man who makes it his mission to save others who are taken like he was. I would have enjoyed spending more time with the characters.
I really enjoyed this story. Sula really needed a happy ending and I was so glad to get her story. Damien was so great. It was nice getting to know him better and seeing him with Sula was awesome. This story had plenty of action, little bit of intrigue, and a lot of sweet moments. I loved Sula and watching her claim Damien bit by bit. She has pretty much been in captivity her whole life so just about everything is new to her. The loved the way that the story flowed and how they built their relationship. This was a quick read but very fun. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Silas a rare phoenix shifter who has spent her whole life locked up in a small cage. Her tears, feathers and blood sold. Damien is a Black and works for the Queen. On a mission to free shifters from traffickers he finds a had dead tiny bald bird. His dragon demands they care for and heal . Ours. This was soooooo sweet. I love it. Great action and storyline. The characters are fantastic and I just loved their development. It was so cute. Don't miss it. Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.
Dragon Fire and Phoenix Ash is Book 5 of the Council of Black Dragons Series which is a sweet but sizzling novella collaborated between the authors, J. Thompson and Mina Carter. You are definitely sucked into the storyline and feeling a range of emotions throughout the entire story. While this is a novella, it is a complete read, however I did feel it fell short and was lacking a bit in the developmental aspect of Damian and Sula as a couple.
Please note that an ARC was generously provided in exchange for an honest review of which this is both honest and completely voluntary.
Reborn from trust, love, and shared childhoods of abuse, Damian and his dragon goes to the end of the world to save their soul mate from her barbaric kidnappers. She, Sula, once rescued and nourished back from the death by Damian and his Black Dragon warriors, returns his life-saving deed by bringing him back to life from the Gorgon’s icy, cementing stare, and revealing her true nature to him. Great character development and a fast paced plot, but the novella was over too quickly. An amazing, gravity defying read!!!

A fan-freaking-tastic read! I fell into this story right after finishing another collaboration between these two authors and it was just as addictive as the last one! First of all, kudos for naming a character Sula, as a fan of Toni Morrison this was huge for me. This Sula is a survivor too, even though Damian technically did save her. Their relationship was sweet and built up steadily. I just really loved all the parts of this little book. It was easy to fall into the plot, I only hope we see more of these two in future books!
I adore Ms. Carter's black dragons and loved Damian. The way he interacted with "little Dot" the "parrot" he rescued was so sweet. Sula has known nothing but pain her entire life. Forced to stay in her shifted state, Sula feels broken. Then Damian rescues her. He shows her kindness and feeds her chocolate cake. Maybe she can keep him. Hmm....just a little lick then he's hers.
*I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing*
Sula is a rare bird shifter. A Phoenix. She was stolen as an infant. She has been caged, abused, her feathers plucked, her tears collected. All for profit. Her life at the mercy of others. Damian is a dragon shifter. A Black. He knows the suffering that has been forced on Sula. He works to save others from the same fate. And after a life of misery, Damian brings Sula back to life.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and was not compensated in any way.
Holy Chocolate Cake!! I freaking loved Sula. While my heart panged for her and her plight, she was a fighter all the way and a survivor. When she started to come out of her shell and really show herself, I loved it. Chocolate Cake Angels – Check! Licking Handsome Guy to Keep – Double Check!! I dove into the book and didn't come up until Sula and her dragon were soaring into a HEA. Sure this was part of the Dragon's Council books. But it was totally stand alone.
Loved this novella. I'm not familiar with Carter's work but I am more than familiar with Thompson's, I've read and loved each and every one of her stories.
Dragon Fire and Phoenix Ash was great, wish it had been longer, couldn't get enough of Damian and Sula. The story was cute and sweet with a touch of sexiness and panty dropping hotness.
Loved this collaboration between authors. Hope they do it again.
