Annie left Whitehorse, Montana thirteen years ago and left behind the man who she loved-the local cowboy Dawson. Now she’s back to sell the house her grandmother left her. Along with the house Annie inherited the secrets her grandmother hid from everyone. Annie wants to sell the house as soon as possible and leave the town. She didn’t expect to find the house at such bad condition and that’s when Dawson comes to her rescue. Spending time together at her grandmother’s house brings them closer to each other as well as to the secrets Annie’s grandmother had.

It’s the first book in the series and the first book I’ve read by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the second chance romance and the mystery around the house and Annie’s grandmother. I can’t wait to read next books in the series that follow Annie’s sisters. I’d totally recommend this book for mystery/romantic suspense readers.

The Intrigue line from Harlequin/Mills & Boon was my favourite, and I even got a subscription, as I love romantic suspense. However, I dropped the subscription after the absolutely execrable In the Lawman's Protection, which I read a couple of months ago. It had a plot that made no sense and a "hero" that drugged the heroine. It just completely soured me on the line. But Hard Rustler, (bizarre gay-porn sounding title aside), was a nice toe being dipped back in the water. I assume because B.J. Daniels has been writing for the line since forever, she's allowed to stray from Intrigue's normal formula. This entry had a mild gothic element to it, and for some reason also reminded me of Mary Higgins Clark before her books turned to crap.

Our heroine is Annabelle Clementine, whose modelling career has hit the skids, forcing her to return to her hometown of Whitehorse, Montana, to sell the house left to her by the grandmother who raised her. Little does she know, her grandmother is hiding some secrets in her past involving a mobster and his connection to a heist, which could come back to haunt Annabelle. Meanwhile, she is also reunited with cowboy Dawson Rogers, whose heart she broke when she left him thirteen years earlier to pursue her modelling career.

The plot moves along nicely and kept me interested. Like I said, the mystery reminded me of something Mary Higgins Clark would have once written, including the inclusion of many different points of view - which is generally a big no-no in category romance. Indeed, I can see why the publishers prefer writers don't do this. It can detract from the romance! We get so many points of view here that our hero and heroine aren't reunited properly until after nearly 70 pages! That's just a tad too long, I think. Also, I was concerned that Dawson spends all those 70 pages thinking about nothing but Annabelle, whereas she doesn't once seem to think about Dawson!

Also, unfortunately, I just never felt myself warming up to the hero and heroine. Annabelle is too snappy. And Dawson - oh, my! What a whiny, mopey, mealy-mouthed bore he was! Not my idea of a romantic hero at all! He spends all his time feeling sorry for himself and sulking at Annabelle for leaving him. Thirteen years ago. He even needs his own mother to tell him to get off his backside and actually do something pro-active in regards to his relationship with Annabelle. There's nothing hard or rustly about him whatsoever. Whatever that means.

On a smaller note, I'm guessing because B.J. Daniels is a reliable author for this line, the editing isn't as stringent? I spotted lots of grammatical errors.

Faults aside, I enjoyed this for its decent pacing and suspenseful plot, and hopefully further Intrigue titles will remind me why I enjoyed the line so much in the first place.

BJ Daniels writes great bad guys! They're as complicated and interesting as the H/h often are.

I've seen some reviews complaining about the heroine not being likable, but to me, that was part of her character's story arc. She had bad stuff she had to deal with, and that was how she handled it--to protect herself from further harm and humiliation. Love, the hero, and the unexpected kindness of others finally helped her move past that and change how she presented herself to the world. Yes, I would have liked to have delved a little more into that part of her story, but that's not really Ms. Daniels's style. Plus, I think this would have needed to be a bigger story to encompass that element of the story. And I wouldn't want to lose any of the twisty mystery or time with supporting characters.

For me, this was a fast, thoroughly enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this story, especially the yearning hero, Dawson: what a fantastic rewriting of the “I-loved-you-for-years” trope showing the longing through the male perspective. This is the second story with this focus on the hero’s desire and aching for the heroine that I’ve read recently and I found these heroes so endearing and sweet, whilst being all male and strong.
I loved how BJ Daniels wrote the rekindling of Dawson and Annabelle passion, in a really slow and smooth way, like the familiarity of old lovers. The relationship and banter between Dawson, his brother, best friend and mother was also
But the plot was great too, I found Frannie’s story funny and enjoyed the kindness and generosity of Dawson and Willie and the rallying family and friends, and appreciated the beautiful Montana setting.
I'm grateful to the publisher, HARLEQUIN/Harlequin Intrigue, and NetGalley for providing a free copy

Thrilling beginning to what promises to be a highly entertaining new series, emotionally engaging and sweetly sexy romantic journey.

This is the perfect wrap of a romance and a mystery. There are several whys in this story. Why leave the house to only one granddaughter, why was there a wall where they used to be a alcove, why were people breaking into the house and why was Annabelle “Annie” Clementine back in Whitehorse, Montana. A great mix of danger, tension and romance.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

A suspenseful second-chance-at-love romance!

He’d never been able to say no to her – even when he should have known that a girl like her wanted something better than a cowboy like him.

B.J. Daniels’ Hard Rustler is a suspenseful second-chance-at-love romance. It heralds the debut of the author’s Whitehorse, Montana: The Clementine Sisters trilogy. B.J. is one of my favorite authors. Her books are always awesome reads. That’s why I never hesitate to pick them up as soon as I see a new one is available.

As this story opens, we learn that thirteen years ago Annabelle “Annie” Clementine left the small town of Whitehorse, Montana and Dawson Rogers, the man she thought she’d marry, to pursue a modeling career. Now, her Grandma Frannie has passed away and left her the home Annie grew up in. Annie has reluctantly returned to her childhood home to ready it for sale. She wants to get in, sell the house quickly, and get out without seeing too many people she knows. That’s not going to happen….

There’s a multitude of reasons for Annie’s inability to meet her self-imposed deadline. First of all, the house isn’t cluttered; it is packed wall-to-wall making for an overwhelming task. Secondly, she’s flat broke and running on empty as her modeling career has gone belly up. Thirdly, her childhood sweetheart keeps turning up. Finally, as Annie’is going through Frannie’s belongings, she discovers skeletal hints of a secret life that her grandmother had hidden – mysteries that now put Annie’s life in jeopardy.

Dawson is an awesome hero. He stole my heart from the get-go. He’s a good man: endearing, strong, caring, protective and capable. He’s never gotten over Annabelle. Fate decrees that he’s the first person she runs into on her return to Whitehorse when she runs out of gas. He helps her out while resolving to do everything he can to make her sojourn in Whitehorse a short one. His heart can’t handle more.

Annabelle took a bit longer for me to warm up to. However, as the plot line progressed, I started seeing the humor and the payback that she deserved in her sorry situation. From there, I began pulling for her to listen to her heart and get it right this time.

The rekindling of their sweet and clean romance was a perfect slow burn. As a mother, I loved Dawson’s relationship with his mother and brother. The townsfolk of Whitehorse were the neighbors we all want – kind, generous and there when we need them.

Following please find a few of my favorite lines from Hard Rustler:

“Ever seen the play Arsenic and Old Lace?”
---
“There was a spider…”
---
“A gentleman would leave.”
He chuckled at that, his gaze locking with hers. “You and I are way past that, Annie.”

I thoroughly enjoyed Hard Rustler. The pacing was just right, the characters were well-written, the suspense was riveting and the western setting was beautiful. There were plenty of scenes to tickle your funny bone too. Now, I can’t wait to read the stories of the other Clementine sisters as this series continues with Rogue Gunslinger and Rugged Defender. If you enjoy cowboys and romantic suspense, I’d encourage you to check out Hard Rustler!

Thirteen years ago Annabelle Clementine left Montana and Dawson, the boy she thought she would marry, and never looked back. Now she's returned to the home she grew up in, the house her grandma Frannie left her, her success as a supermodel a distant image in the rearview mirror. If cleaning out her grandma's overly cluttered house isn’t enough, she has to face the only man she's ever loved, who she left heartbroken to pursue her dreams. As she sorts through Frannie's things, Anna quickly learns details of a secret life from years ago that may put Anna in danger. Dawson has always had a knack for saving Anna, from the first time she got stuck in a tree house at age five, but will he be able to save her this time without having his heart destroyed again?

When I think of romantic suspense with a western setting, B.J. Daniels is at the top of the list, so I was delighted to read an early copy of this book (thank you Harlequin and NetGalley). In true Daniels fashion, the suspense is riveting, the mystery intriguing, and the romance is sweet and heartfelt. I loved the small town feel and sense of community, the push and pull of the romance was authentic and entertaining, and the mystery had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the two main characters, as well as the secondary, and the fact that a deceased grandma Frannie held such a pivotal role made things interesting. For a non character, she was pretty entertaining, and quite the crafty old gal. If you love cowboys and enjoy romantic suspense, you can’t go wrong with B.J. Daniels and “Hard Rustler.”

Last night I finished "Hard Rustler" by B.J. Daniels!

I gave it 4.25 out of 5 stars!

I just LOVED this story.

I’m a huge BJ Daniels fan, especially her shorter works. I love the tight, clean, suspenseful writing style.

Hard Rustler was no exception.

Annabelle Clementine is a former model who returns home to Whitehorse, Montana. The small town holds its share of secrets, which Annabelle will soon find out.

Dawson is a lovelorn cowboy who’s true love ran out on him all those years before. But can his heart mend in time to save itself and her?

I gotta say, I loved Dawson from the first page. First-page Y'all. He is the gruff, strong, and handsome cowboy I love to read about. His relationship with Annabelle is a complicated one, but the way BJ slowly reveals their story and slow-burning romance was delightful.

I devoured this book in just three sittings. It was just the cure for my long and stressful week. I can’t wait for the next two books in the trilogy.

Buckle up, because, with the Clementine sisters, it’s sure to be one heck of a ride.

***Guest Review by mom, romance fanatic, and (someday) published author Summer Raines!***

Like a siren’s song, this book enticed me with promises of mystery, a little action and some danger. Okay, I can admit it. The cute cowboy on the cover did a bit of enticing also, but I do like intrigue with my love stories. Sadly, like many mariners before, I crashed into the rocks.

One thing I learned living in Texas is that any man can wear a hat and boots, but that doesn’t make him a cowboy. Cowboys are loyal and protective. They keep chivalry alive and will help just about anyone in need. They play hard, work even harder. And they love the women in their lives something fierce. Dawson, my friends, is a real cowboy!

Here’s my problem though—I hate Annabelle, the heroine. She’s mean. The only person she’s nice to is Dawson’s mom. She’s a snob. I don’t believe she’d be able to find a happily ever after with a cowboy because she would say, “ew he’s dirty” every time he had to go check on the cows. Throughout the book, every character thought that she had always looked down on the town and everyone in it, so I don’t want her to be with my book boyfriend or spend any time with his awesome family.

I’m irritated because Dawson deserved better! He just kept taking her crap and coming back for more. I understand wanting to be charitable and helpful, but I mean come on! Annabelle needs (fill in the blank) - Dawson to the rescue. Even though she would blast him with attitude every single freaking time he showed up, he would somehow talk her into accepting what he was trying to do for her. But I think he should’ve left her to fend for herself and die alone in her grandmother’s house.

I did like the premise, most of the secondary characters, and I thought the plot line was interesting. However, I would’ve liked to be introduced to the details of the mystery a bit slower. It seemed like almost every piece of the puzzle and the players in this game of cat and mouse were revealed too early.
At first, I had a hard time following along. I had to slow down and really concentrate. I blamed it on all the head hopping, but eventually I realized it was the info dumps. So. Many. Info dumps. For example, during one about the sheriff, I learn about their spouse as well. I made the assumption that this would be important later (the spouse’s knowledge would help find something/ solve a clue) but I don’t remember another mention of this person.

Probably my absolute number one pet peeve while reading is REPEAT info dumps. It wasn’t a good idea to throw the character’s life story at me the first time they were introduced, so please don’t play sad reruns of the same details every time they show up in the story.

I also didn’t see any new feelings developing. Not one. The story is ex-lovers constantly battling the hurt of breaking apart years ago. They internally explored the love they once felt and hurt feelings from the breakup, but I didn’t see any character growth driving them toward a reconciliation. I feel like the HEA is a Happy For Now, because they haven’t seen each other for years and didn’t learn enough about each other NOW for me to believe they will stay together forever.

This book is part of a series, but sadly it didn’t make me yearn to find out what happens with the other Clementine sisters.

Full disclosure: We received an ARC from NetGalley, free of charge.

This book intrigued me with its premise of a woman who got out of her hometown at eighteen to become a model, coming home to deal with her grandmothers estate. Then throw in her ex-boyfriend, who’s a Montana cowboy, and a mystery dealing with a mobster and it should have been an entertaining read.

Instead, it was a disjointed story with too many characters. Aside from the two main characters, there were at least 10 supporting characters that we were introduced to. With that many characters, I found myself struggling with the abrupt changes in who we were following and the amount of information that was dumped in each passage.

What made it a two star read was the lack of emotional growth. Annabelle was judgmental, rude, unlikeable and didn’t seem to want to change much of that. Dawson was still in love with the girl who left him and at 3/4 of the way through the book, still thought she was going to take off once her grandmothers house sold. I had a hard time believing that he was in love with the woman she is now.

I received this ARC from NetGalley.

It has been a long time since I read a category romance and I don’t know what I expected when I downloaded Hard Rustler by BJ Daniels. Maybe I remembered liking her books as a teenager. Maybe I was just excited to see a Harlequin under “Read Now.” Whatever it was, it was a mistake. The writing style is fine, although the amount of headhopping is rather dizzying, which makes the story seem rushed. It also has a tendency to “tell” rather than “show.,” taking away a lot of the suspense.

No character development and barely any back story. Why do the main characters like each other? The author says there is chemistry, but you certainly don’t feel it from her writing. This book was so boring and a giant waste of my time.

Hard Rustler is the first title in the new Whitehorse, Montana spinoff series, The Clementine Sisters, and I'm still trying to figure out what the title of this novel had to do with anything in this book. Rustling is usually about cattle or horses, neither figured into this second chance at love story, and while it was a fairly entertaining read, I had several issues with this story, and, at best, I found it to be a 3-star read.

I'm a fan of the second chance at love trope, and I enjoyed the bare bones of this story. Former supermodel, Annabelle Clementine, is now practically penniless, but is returning to Whitehorse, Montana, the town she left behind 13 years earlier and never gave so much as a thought since. She is the sole beneficiary of her recently deceased grandmother's home, and she plans to sell it as soon as possible, because she desperately needs the money, but before she even gets to Whitehorse, her pricey silver sports car runs out of gas, and she asks a guy whose truck and horse trailer are parked along the roadside if he'd mind siphoning off some gas from his truck, enough to get her home. She's rather rude and haughty to the grubby stranger, who fills her gas tank, and without so much as a thank you, she drives off. The worst part of this interaction is that the grubby stranger, who Annabelle fails to recognize, is the only man she's ever loved, Dawson Rogers, who proposed marriage to her 13 years ago, and who she left in the dust when she went to California to pursue her dreams of wealth, fame and a career as a supermodel.

It turns out that her grandmother was a hoarder and her house is filled to the rafters with all sorts of stuff, and Annabelle's dream of a quick sale and rapid exit out of town won't be happening any time soon--she can't sell the house in its present state and she can't afford to hire anyone to clear it out and get it ready to be shown. Of course, in a small town, it's not long before everyone in town knows that she's back, and during a quick run to the supermarket for food she bumps into Dawson's mom, Willy, who insists that she come to Thanksgiving dinner, and she doesn't take no for an answer. Although Annabelle and Dawson haven't seen or spoken to one another in 13 years, and the fact that she broke his heart when she left town, it's clear that Annie (his pet name for her) is still the one woman for him, but judging by her self-interest, putting on airs, and her general snootiness about the town and its residents, I couldn't figure out why he still found her lovable. As heroines go, I found it almost impossible to like her.

However, I did like Dawson, a Montana cowboy through and through, and even though Annie broke his heart and demolished his dreams 13 years ago, he's the one who comes to Annie's rescue time and time again. He's that rare creature, an honorable man, and had I been in Annie's shoes at the ripe old age of 18, I'd have accepted his marriage proposal in a heartbeat and built a rewarding life with the handsome cowboy, but Annie just took off to find fame and fortune without giving Dawson a second thought.

What I did enjoy was the backstory about her grandmother and her past, and I wish I could discuss it at length but there's a big mystery and evildoers contained within this novel and I'd hate to spoil it for you. Suffice it to say that I liked the mystery, suspense and intrigue of this novel far more than I did the love story, and the seemingly endless discussion of Annie's packing process, which we hear about carton by carton. It was a rather poor substitute for character development and emotional growth, and I can't believe I just wrote this review about a B.J. Daniels novel, because I usually love her characters and their interactions, but I found it sorely lacking in Hard Rustler.

By the time I got to the rather abrupt HEA ending, I still couldn't figure out what Dawson found in Annie's character to love--and why she was the one woman for him was as much a mystery to me by the end of the novel as it was at the beginning. The fact that it's entirely up to rude, judgmental, and elitist Annie to decide whether to give modeling another chance when it's offered to her, or to stay in Whitehorse with Dawson certainly didn't endear her to this reader, and I simply couldn't see that their happily ever after would last for long. The only thing that saved this novel from a 1 or 2 star rating was the mystery hidden in grandma Frannie's house and the suspense leading up to its discovery.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

Hard Rustler takes you for a suspenseful ride and doesn't stop. BJ Daniels does it again with a story that twist and turns leaves you wandering if our heroine can survive back in her hometown. Especially when a grandmother's secrets come to light. Besides trying to solve her own problems with the help of her former sweetheart she must maneuver her way through her grandmother's past. Can her former lover and she survive? Will she go back to her old career? Will the uncover the secrets that are decades to a half century old?

Annabelle Clementine is headed to her hometown of Whitehorse, Montana where she vowed she'd never return to the town or the state. Leaving 13 years ago and leaving a broken hearted Dawson Rogers behind. Annabelle is about out of gas when she comes across a cowboy parked along the side of the road and doesn't recognize her old boyfriend. Dawson realizes pretty quickly that he's in trouble when he realizes its his Annie who he's going to help. Taking off right after receiving almost full tank of gas Annie arrives in Whitehorse. Needing to sell her grandmother's house because of career problems she's determined to leave as soon as possible. Running into Dawson's mom Willie at the grocery store Annie is invited to Thanksgiving dinner. Thinking that Dawson is hunting with his brother she goes to Thanksgiving, only they're both surprised to each other. Dawson reveals he's the one that gave her the gas. He's jealous when his best friend and Annie flirt with each other. They all end up in the local bar where he dances and kisses Annie. They both bolt to leave and Annie is warned about hurting Dawson again. As he's leaving Dawson sees that her car is being towed and pays the back payments so she can keep it. Annie being embarrassed lashes out at him. He's talked into helping Annie clean out her grandmother's house. Dawson brings his family and friends to help her thinking the sooner he gets her out of town the sooner things can go back to normal . Only they can't seem to fight the attraction. Some suspicious people are noticed by the elderly neighbor lady. Annie finds a metal box holding clues to her grandmother's past. Dawson and Annie begin to wonder what is behind the closed off alcove. Annie thinks someone has been in her house, when she finds a trap door and tunnel she realizes she's right. They find out that her grandmother has a connection to a mobster. They realize Annie has another relative. The mobster sends his nephew to take care of Annie and find his stolen loot that he stole decades earlier. His nephew realizes the family connection and relays the information to the uncle. Annie and Dawson get closer and decide to open the wall. Finding a dead body wasn't part of the plan. Annie moves in with Dawson and gets a call about her modelling career and tells her secret to Willie. Dawson thinks she's wanting to leave so he's not holding onto her. Annie doesn't want to leave. When she moves back to her house and thinks she hears something. Getting up she goes looking and finds an elderly man with a gun. He's looking for the missing stolen goods only Annie doesn't know anything about it. The nephew shows up in time to save her only to be killed. Dawson meanwhile has a feeling that he needs to see Annie because something isn't right. He shows up as she's being held hostage by the elderly man wanting to know where the loot is. Annie has no idea and he doesn't believe her. Between Annie and Dawson they over power the man and call the sheriff. The sheriff realizes the elderly neighbor is missing. She's found dead in her basement. Annie tells Dawson she doesn't want to leave and they become engaged. Annie calls her 2 sisters to tell them about their grandmother. They plan on coming to Whitehorse for Christmas. Annie get an unexpected letter from a relative.

Hard Rustler is the first bo0k in the Clementine sister series based in Whitehorse, Montana. I look forward to the next 2 installments of the series. This book left me with questions. Like what has the other sister's looking in shadows and wondering if they're being followed. Who in Whitehorse will be the next to claim a Clementine sister as the love of their life. Can they be saved and find the man of their dreams in Whitehorse. I am anxiously awaiting the outcome. B.J. Daniels is a writer who can bring you to the edge of your seat wondering who is the bad guys and will they prevail or will our heroes. More Whitehorse, Montana books is my hope always. Especially since BJ Daniels is a FAVORITE AUTHOR!!!!!

Good second chance romance with a very intriguing mystery to go along with it. Annie had grown up in Whitehorse, but couldn't wait for the day she could leave to follow her dreams. Unfortunately, that also meant leaving behind the man she loved, breaking both their hearts. Thirteen years later, she's back in Whitehorse, broke, with her high-powered modeling career in shambles. All she has left is her grandmother's house, which she's determined to sell as quickly as possible, and leave again. The last person she wants to see is Dawson.

Dawson is not at all happy to see Annie back in town. He has worked hard to convince himself that he's over her, but as soon as he sees her again, he knows he's in trouble. In order to protect himself, he offers to help Annie so that she can leave sooner, thereby hopefully saving himself some heartache.

Annie did not come across as a very nice person at the beginning. From her attitude about the cowboy who helped her to her opinion of the town, she seemed snobbish and stuck-up. Considering the state of her career and her finances, I wondered if she had brought it all on herself. I did feel sorry for her when she saw the condition of the house, as it was stuffed with all kinds of junk. I softened a little bit toward her when she ran into Dawson's mother and was actually pleasant to her, giving me hope that there was a better person hiding inside the snotty exterior.

I enjoyed the rekindling of the relationship between Dawson and Annie. It's clear from the start that the attraction between them is just as strong as it was thirteen years ago. As much as he tells himself he wants her gone, Dawson can't stop himself from coming to her rescue over and over. These rescues hit Annie right in the pride, as she doesn't want Dawson to know just how far she's fallen. I got a little frustrated with her attitude when she would lash out at him. Dawson had the patience of a saint to put up with it. But eventually the antagonism faded and that simmering attraction started to heat up. Dawson can feel himself falling all over again, and knowing that she's planning to leave, that his heart will get broken again. Annie's feelings are also growing, but she can't see Dawson trusting her a second time. Even when they shared their feelings, they didn't take it to the point of actually talking about wishes or expectations, leaving each believing there was no chance. I loved the push that Dawson's mom gave him, telling him he needed to make a "grand gesture," though nobody expected the kind of gesture he ended up making. I loved the ending as Annie decided to go after what she wanted.

The suspense of the story was very good. As Annie started going through her grandmother's house, she discovered that her grandmother had been keeping some very interesting secrets. I loved seeing the layers as they were revealed, with each one being more amazing than the last. But Annie and Dawson weren't the only ones interested in unearthing Frannie's secrets. There was someone else who was equally determined, and he wasn't going to let anything get in the way. Getting the viewpoint of this player added an extra layer of intensity, especially as Dawson and Annie came closer to discovering the truth. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat, especially as it came with a couple of unexpected twists. The best part of all was finding the missing jewels and where they were hidden.

Annie had left the small town of Whitehorse, Montana in her rear view mirror more than a decade ago with no intentions of ever returning. Yeah, she knew she’d left one heartbroken cowboy behind but that was something she would put aside to think of another day every single time Dawson ran across her mind… which was too often. Now the fates seems to be turning against her with her modeling career in ruins, unable to find work in the industry she loves due to blackballing from those in too much power… and worst of all is her grandmother’s death, and having to return to Whitehorse to deal with her estate. Clean it up. Sell it fast. And get outta town even quicker. That was her grand plan… but as they say, even the best laid plans can fall apart in a second.

The last person Dawson expected to see on the road in trouble was Annie. He’d had his heart broken by the younger version, and he had no intention of letting the older version do that to him again. Yet, he still found himself helping her clean up and clear out her grandmother’s house – all under the guise of getting her outta town quicker. Then the mystery that Annie’s grandmother had hid started to crumble as discoveries were made and intruders wrecked damage… how was he supposed to turn his back on her now.

Hard Rustler gives me everything I enjoy in a B. J. Daniels novel – a handsome cowboy, the lady he loves, a touch of mystery and a great secondary cast to pull it all together in an intriguing, entertaining story. Plus, I’ll always have a blast returning to Whitehorse, Montana the location of some of the best love stories, mysteries and believable couples to be found in Cowboy Romance. Annie and Dawson have a lot of past to get beyond before their happy ending comes, and I was easily caught up in the beginning story in The Clementine Sisters series. I’m looking forward to meeting Annie’s sisters in September and November of 2018 when their stories are released. Love a good cowboy romance with a touch of danger and mystery? Then this story would suit you just fine.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

This book is the first in a trilogy about the Clementine sisters. It’s set in Whitehorse, Montana where the Clementine sisters were raised by their grandmother. Francesca Clementine’s death is what brings Annabelle home – a place she said she would never return to. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Annabelle left right after high school and went on to become a super model. Grandma Francesca left Annabelle her old house, angering the other sisters. Annabelle was the most like Francesca and she thinks she was left the house because of that. But, her luck has run out. She’s returning to Whitehorse to sell her Grandmother’s house as quickly as she can and then plans to leave again. She’s got plenty of secrets, too. And the last person she wants to see while she’s back is Dawson Rogers, her high school sweetheart.

B.J. Daniels creates great characters, but I didn’t like Annabelle at all. I thought she was a snobby, rich girl. Even down on her luck she was a bitch. And how could she not want to know the secrets of her grandmother’s house. She was far too self-absorbed for me. I liked Dawson, but I seriously wanted to whack him in the head and shake him silly for sticking with ‘Annie’. However, eventually, I begrudgingly started to like Annie and I saw that Dawson knew what she was about all along.

Great suspense, great bad guys, great good guys – it doesn’t ever get any better than a B.J. Daniels book and Hard Rustler was no exception. It may have started slow for me, but it ended up perfectly! I can’t wait for the second installment of the Clementine Sisters.

Annabelle made it clear that she wanted bigger and better things becoming a supermodel. After the passing of her grandmother she's back in town to clean up the house that looks like the episode of Hoarders. She was hoping not to run into people of their past and of course that's the first thing she does run into her old flame Dawson. Dawson is on a mission to help her clean the house the faster she gets done the faster she gets out of town. Since Annie is inherited the house she seems to have inherited a mystery on their hands.

Now that last sentence is description I made sounds terrible but I don't know if I could do any better. There is so much to like about this book other than the fact that it's quick and easy to read so if you are pressed for time and you're looking for a bit of mystery to escape into then this book might do it for you. I love that there was more than one point of view there is not only are the main characters but of a sort of henchman (?) point of view. It seems the grandmother was deep into something and I thought it was interesting getting to find out what that was and how even after all these years it would still try to come bite her in the butt. I love the connection between Dawson and Annabelle and that it was a clean Romance so if you're anything like me you'd appreciate that. I love that there was a bit of romance, drama, mystery enough to keep the readers interested and I recommend you lovely readers should check it out.

My favorite thing about a BJ Daniels' book is how she has several characters being spotlighted during the book and what is happening to them, along with the main characters so there is, in a sense, multiple storylines going on, along with the main storyline! It makes for fantastic reading! I can't put down one of her books once I start it! This book was no exception! I was thrilled to go back to Whitehorse again. Although we meet new characters, there are some returning ones too. I would personally classify this book as more mystery than suspense but I still enjoyed it very much. The two main characters, Annabelle and Dawson, were high school sweethearts but Annabelle was made for bigger things and had to leave this small Montana town for the world of modeling. She's come back to Whitehorse to sell her grandmother's home but doesn't want anyone to know she returns broke and without a job. She finds out some amazing and disturbing things about her grandma that she never expected. THAT'S when the mystery begins! You'll have to read the book to find out what happens! It'll keep you turning the pages quickly, I guarantee it!
I received this book from the publisher but was not required to leave a reivew. All opinions are my own.

It seems there's always something crazy and exciting happening in Whitehorse, Montana. Oh! And murders too! Hard Rustler by B. J. Daniels is the first book in her Clementime Sisters series. Annabelle Clementine falls on hard times, losing her modeling job and getting blackballed in the industry so she returns home to Whitehorse to sell her grandmother's home after Grandma Frannie's death. The idea is to get in, sell quickly and get out, hopefully without running into many people she knows. The first person she runs into before even pulling into Whitehorse is the guy whose heart she broke when she left town to become a model. Dawson Rogers helps Annabelle out when she runs out of gas on her way to Whitehorse. He knows then and there that he needs to keep ahold of his heart and not let Annabelle, "Annie" in again. What are the odds of that happening? Hmmm....

B.J. Daniels is one of my favorite authors. She always writes a really good story and this one is no exception. I enjoyed all her characters and the storyline. The pace was just right and the suspense thrilling. I can't wait to read about the next Clementine sister.

Should I expect quality characters, writing, and plot from romance novels? Yes. There are books that manage to do all this.

Did this book deliver on any of the three? Not really. And yet I continued to read-so I guess I am the chump here.

Annabelle has to be the most unlikeable love interest on the planet-an unbelievable ridiculous character. We are expected to buy Annabelle’s helplessness and ignorance of the Montana after growing up there. Yes, she has been living in LA and probably doesn’t own any warm clothes anymore-but she would remember and try to modify her clothes to suit the area. Instead she comes off as a spoiled “city slicker.” Annabelle’s lack of curiosity about the mystery of her grandmother’s house is also unbelievable. She is spoiled, proud, and damaged. I didn’t like her in the beginning or the end.

Furthermore, Dawson seems like he has a lot of free time for a rancher. He can take several days off of work without any comment of who is managing the ranch or the never-ending chores.

There were so many moments where the characters weren’t believable or realistic.

I did this to myself. I read this stupid book and continued to read it. Ugh.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced review.

I really enjoy a romance with a bit of a mystery added so this was a fun book to read. It really took me over half the book to even like Annabelle but I did like Dawson. Towards the end of the book, I could see what Dawson saw in her.

I guess I don't relate well to her and when she showed no interest in the mystery of the alcove, it drove me crazy! How can you not want to find out why grandma walled up the little alcove??!

Only negative that I found was that there was no mention of the two intruders at the end so I don't know if they died or they lived. Guess you can tell that I am naturally curious and want answers!

Hope that we will see more of these characters and there will be a series set here or involving Annabelle's sisters. I also liked the bit of Annabelle being black balled and how that was resolved, as it is kind of relevant to similar things happening in Hollywood.

A second chance is all anyone can hope for!

What an awesome book! I had actually win book 3 of The Clementine Sisters series, but I couldn't read it without starting from the beginning. I'm so happy I did because this book brought suspense, mystery, and second chance love! Just thinking of how hard it must have been for Dawson when Annabelle left to find her place in the world, broke my heart! Then Annabelle coming home to get her grandmother's house ready to sell after her death, brought me hope! B.J. Daniels really kept my mind going while wondering if these two would ever find love again. Not only that, but for Annabelle to find out that her grandmother was not only a doting, wonderful woman, but a totally different woman with such a past! I can't keep going on because I do not want to give anything away, but take my word for it! Read this romantic, mysterious, heartwarming story!

I loved this story. The Clementine sisters are going to be a fascinating series I get the feeling. If I go by this book it will be great. In this book we meet the 1st of the sisters Annie Clementine. In this story we also meet her ex Dawson Rogers. Now we know its got to have some 2nd chance romance but its more. We get to learn about their grandmother who turns out to be a very unusual but totally loveable character. This story is also about choices made in the past and present. Its about standing up for what is right. I love the way BJ writes this story. Its compact but it pacts alot of punch in the process. It has alot of story to tell in a short amount of time. I love how it goes into the past then it comes back to the present. It weaves between the 2 very well. I love how the story ends but it prepares you for the next one to come.
