The Kaufmann Protocol: Why We Age and How to Stop It

Rate this book
The Kaufmann Protocol is the first comprehensive approach to aging that tackles why we age, and then recommends a strategic, scientific formulation to decelerate the process. The book brings practical information to everyday people, and takes the science of aging out of the laboratory and into the real world. The first half of The Kaufmann Protocol discusses aging on a cellular level, which separates it from all other anti-aging fads. We age because our cells age and it is this understanding that allows the protocol to combat aging for people from all walks of life. This is presented in terms of the seven tenets, or categories, of aging which comprise topics such as DNA alterations, mitochondrial energy, and aging pathways. These are explained in both scientific and laymen terms, such that anyone can understand the process. A series of analogies paralleling the cell to a factory assist the reader in following the logic. The second half of the book reviews the top fifteen molecular agents that curb the aging process. Each agent is examined, discussed and then rated in terms of the seven categories, thus granting it a Kaufmann Rating number. This number is essentially a snapshot of its anti-aging properties, and allows the reader to create a regimen to fit their personal needs. Alternatively, the book suggests the most common protocol, the PANACEA, which is a combination of five molecular agents. This regimen is fantastic for most people over the age of 40, but it certainly is not comprehensive. With the tools and knowledge presented in this book, the reader can determine what is best for them as individuals. This book is also meant to be a complimentary addition to the Kaufmann Protocol App (expected release June 2018) which will allow the user to track their progress and stay up to date with all of the new scientific findings that will continue to make aging truly optional.

4 out of 5, I really liked it.

The reason why it's not 5 is that some information in there are already outdated. Let's consider the metformin case, which once considered the king of longevity, has been proven to impair some results of exercises. This should be a living book, something similar to Peter Attia blog.

The book itself is awesome. It divides longevity into aspects, first brings some biochemistry behind aging and then provides methods to fight it. If you have not read anything about aging and you want to be a bit more like Roy Batty with his famous "I want more life", then it's a perfect read.

This is the best book on anti-aging i have ever read. It integrates all the current research, summarizes all the current theories up-to-date, offers safe practical recommendations and goes in depth of two vital topic: lipofuscin and advanced glycation end products, which all other authors omit. (it may be worth noting those two might prove to be interconnected in future research as glycation might increase lipofuscin, hence decreasing glycation could limit lipofuscin) This is one of those very few books to which one could add very little, so impressive is the scope of the author's research. Nevertheless, without meaning to criticize, i decided it would be beneficial to clarify that the astaxanthin mice studies use the human-equivalent dose of over 2000 mg, which makes deriving the same benefits as the mice did somewhat unlikely considering the maximum human dose is around 20 mg. Another minor note specifically for peptide enthusiasts is that you won't find GDF-11 discussed here, but as that peptide is highly inaccessible and the book is not peptide-focused there is no place to complain. For Brian Johnson fans, i suppose one criticism has been that 17-alpha estradiol is not discussed in the book, but since it cannot be found on the market and would benefit only men, whereas this book focuses on interventions already available for both men and women, nobody can complain. I am certain the author has vastly more knowledge beyond the interventions described here that do not even need a prescription, but made the winning choice to focus on what is most accessible to maximize the utility that this book can have for you personally. I have to also add that i am very impressed with learning that a blood pressure medication (hydralazine) can eliminate advanced glycation end products to any degree, a fact very few doctors know. In fact, many doctors told me that could not be the case, even though it is. The only thing I could add of value on top of such a wonderful, extensive and rigorous work would be that some studies suggest Meclofexonate can decrease lipofuscin to a more significant degree than the author's recommendations of Curcumin variations. Both Meclofexonate and the advanced glycation end product inhibitor Aminoguanidine can be found, to my great surprise and without a prescription at that, at least in the US, from at least one online supplement company. (i believe it was supersmart supplements at https://us.supersmart.com/, whose products i personally think are vastly overpriced, but it is still a surprise to see any availability) Europe is much more limiting, unfortunately, and i have received a comment that Piracetam has been used to combat lipofuscin with some success in the Eastern Block, which i am researching further; it is true that Piracetam is still sold in Europe, but invariably it is a prescription medication and doctors disagree with this usage. For more globally available options, rosemarinic acid has recently been identified as a safe, more widely available alternative that might be more potent than the above and it is found in natural products in terms of limiting advanced glycation. Sadly no natural product has proven to remove lipofuscin very effectively , and the author is correct only theracumrin has positive signs of efficacy and market availability. Regardless of your interests, theoretical or practical it is worth reading this book; one day it will be in the literature review of many anti-aging articles and we are lucky to have it. Life extension is only a nascent field, and yet you can energize the mind with the many possible avenues already being investigated, which inspire hope.

Read this

Great book. Well written. I’ve read several books I the topic on the aging process - this is the best. The style balances the technical aspects of the subject matter with enough of a layman’s perspective to be enjoyable and easy to read. It’s very well cited at the end if you’re looking for more detailed research on the specifics. Well done.

Fantastic book. Great factory analogies to explain complex bodily processes. Great effort for the humour. I think the general masses will still have some difficulty maintaining attention when details are being discussed but perfect for those who have already some background in this field.

Interesting - a lot of science and hard to get into at first - but keep reading. It's amazing the things we've learned about aging and tests done to counter it. I'm sold and ordered the majority of the recommended supplements....let's see what happens! :-)

You need help sorting through all the bio hacking information out there

I have been consuming information on this subject for about six months and have been confused about where to begin. This book is a great way to get started.

This book is extensive

I have read many books on health and wellness. This has to be the most comprehensive book on supplements and adjuvants to slow the aging process. Love all the research and the scoring system to help select the right supplements/adjuvants to add to my regimen.

A top resource for understanding the anti-aging supplement toolbox. It’s hard to read a paragraph into one of her chapters on Curcumin or Carnosine while resisting the urge to immediately buy them online.

For all the wondrous benefits her list includes, those new to the supplement world would do well to modify their expectations appropriately.

An excellent, primary resource on the cellular processes and the molecular agents that help extend the healthspan and promote the longevity. Now you know which supplements and adjuvants to apply and for what purpose. Why? Because they work based on the scientific research, esp. if proven to be effective in humans. For example, if you are past the menopause and want to slow down osteoporosis, make sure you exercise (esp. resistance training), have enough sleep every day and apply melatonin, EGCG (or drink green tea), and ALA.
Had it not been for spelling mistakes, I would have awarded the book with five stars, for sure.
