A sweet rhyming book about how families are all different, no family looks or acts or sounds exactly like another. Loud families are okay. Quiet families are okay. Messy families are okay. Tidy families are okay. Your family is uniquely your family, and they are okay. The illustrations show a variety of families as well, including animals to help illustrate some differences as well.
A Family Like Yours celebrates the differences in family dynamics. It teaches students that every family is unique and that the family they are in is perfect for them. Children often struggle to understand that not every family is the same as theirs, but this story will help students see beyond their own lives. I would not read this story to my class if one of my students had a rough home life.
I enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was great for students because the poetry was easy enough for them to understand. Also the story line was great for kids because it really gets the message across that all families are different and its okay to be different. At a young age I think children struggle with trying to find who they are and might find trouble when they realize they are different from other kids. Overall, I would read this to my students and children without worrying about the outcome!
“A Family Like Yours” is an influential book that teaches children about how families can be so diverse. Each family looks different and does things differently, but this book emphasizes that those differences are what makes families so beautiful and unique. The book also helps students see that their own family is special and should be treasured most of all.

Despite the title, this book does not have a particularly diverse representation of families. It focuses on families' interests and behavior, but ignores composition. There are no explicitly adopted children, multigenerational families, same-sex parent couples, families with more than two caregivers, or other minority family compositions. Many children would read this book and not see a family like theirs.
