What emerges from this sideways take on our most celebrated Americanisms is the realization that all traditions are invented by particular people at particular times for particular reasons, and that the process of “traditioning” is forever ongoing—especially in the land of the free.

About the author

Prof. David Eller is a cultural anthropologist who has conducted field research among Aboriginal societies in Australia and now teaches anthropology in Denver, Colorado. His recent college textbook Introducing Anthropology of Religion is being hailed as the most significant introduction to the scientific study of religion in a decade. His previous AAP book Natural Atheism showed him to be as good a philosopher as scientist. Now we see he is equally skilled as a linguist and semanticist and can show that for knowledgeable atheists "atheism" means more than the absence of god-beliefs: it is the absence (indeed the rejection) of belief altogether.

Загалом непогана книга. Я розумію людей, які ставили їй 3★, але завдяки їхнім відгукам я був готовий до неоднорідності тексту. І тому він мені сподобався!

За рівнем складності книга складається з трьох частин:
1) вступ: невеликий за обсягом, але дуже насичений. І концептуальний! На жаль, без нього читати наступні розділи просто не має сенсу. Перевага вступу: автор розмірковує про винайдені традиції — поняття, запроваджене Гобсбаумом та Рейнджером 1983. І крім класики, додає огляд новіших робіт, які розвивають ключовий концепт. Як на мене, ідеальний текст для всіх, хто хоче розібратися в теорії;
2) частини 1–2 (про символи США та американські свята): текст стає простішим, але не менш насиченим — цього разу фактами, а не концепціями. І ці розділи ідеально відповідають вступу. На прикладі державних символів та свят можна побачити, як "працює" теорія зі вступу;
3) частини 3–4 (про їжу, одяг та персонажів масової культури): найбільш химерна частина. Чи це традиції? Автор намагається нас в цьому переконати, але жодна з ідей вступу тут не спрацьовує. Ці частини я просто прогортав: це просто історія конкретних явищ культури...

В книзі є висновки, але вони напряму зв'язані зі вступом, тільки написані менш концентровано.

Читачів та читачок найбільше дратували частини 3–4, які про кока-колу, гамбургери, джинси, слово "ok", Супермена, Міккі-Мауса, моряка Попая... А це половина книги!

Але будучи попередженим, я не особливо чогось чекав від цих частин. Без них книга могла б спокійно обійтися. Але вступ, частини 1–2 та висновки — чудове дослідження винайдення традицій в США!

Starts with a great introduction on what tradition is and how it is formed and shaped. This is the best part of this book. The next few chapters on Patriotic traditions is great as well but after that it sort of falls off a cliff. The ending chapters are just not good, the author fails to show how these corporate icons are being formed into tradition and starts to conflate tradition and culture in away that he argues against in the first chapter.

I would read this for the first set of chapters and then just skip the rest unless you are a completest. Worth a look but this book was a disappointment based on its start.

Довгенько читав цю книгу, але насправді вона геть непогана. Умовно її можна розділити на дві непослідовні частини: у одній розповідається про походження основних американських традицій, їхній розвиток і закріплення в американському суспільстві, а в іншій дається трохи теорії та думок автора про те, що таке традиція, звідки вона береться і чому все відбувається саме так.

Мені, відверто кажучи, трохи нуднувато було читати детальні описи традицій і того, як вони видозмінювалися, а от змістовно друга частина мені видалася куди цікавішою, бо не такою сухою, із конкретними висновками. Видно, що автор надихався ідеями Бенедикта Андерсона і його "Уявленими спільнотами", оскільки поясненння створення традицій він веде з необхідності традицій для формування нації і постійного переосмислення минулого, яке вибірково нагромаджується у історичний досвід, який і стає традицією.

Загалом, досить цікава робота, яка варта уваги для кращого розуміння того, що таке Америка і американці.

This started so promisingly - the theoretical introduction is hardly groundbreaking, but is a good start. Unfortunately, the book itself is then just a series of précis of previous research that get thinner and poorer the further the book goes on. By the end he's just rehashing corporate histories without any real grip on their reception/adaptation as tradition, so the conclusion is extremely weak because it's abandoned any of the interesting engagements the introduction was arguing for. I felt let down.

Interesting book to use as a reference to learn about the origin of the holidays and other traditions on USA. Her style is sometimes very dry. I did not finish it as I was not interested in Lifestyle traditions and the traditional characters sections. The most eye opener chapter was about the pledge to the flag.

Didn’t finish it - this book is well researched and the topic is interesting. The writing was just too dry for me to keep reading.
