Depression is the predominant mental health condition worldwide, affecting millions of people each year. But it can be treated effectively with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
Written by experienced practitioners, this introductory book explains what depression is and how it makes you feel. It will help you to understand your symptoms and is ideal as an immediate coping strategy and as a preliminary to fuller therapy. You will learn: · How depression develops and what keeps it going · How to spot and challenge thoughts that maintain your depression · Problem solving and balanced thinking skills
I selected this book from a local library to me due to a friend going through depression. Though I have myself been through depression, I've not really been on this side, with someone very close. I wanted to see if there was any information I could gather, also any activities that I could suggest to them to help them. I found this to be a very informative book, and actually found myself enjoying it. If you are or know someone going through depression, though this is short, it did have some good information inside it, so it therefore may help you.
I mean, you can get a pretty good idea of what this book is all about by just looking at its title. It was actually sent to me by Healthy Minds, a local mental health service, after I self-referred and signed up to go to group therapy. I was pretty impressed, because it has a lot of good stuff.
A very short and concise book, which really helps to overcome difficoult times of the life. I've read it first time during the first year of my PhD, when I started to feel very low, and most of all I was feeling that I was loosing control over my mind and my life. I read it again during this period of lockdown due to covid-19. I like the fact that the book provides a first theoric part about what it really is depression, because sometimes it's hard to recognize it. The second part is very practical, with a lot of step-by-step writing exercises, and very useful examples. This book may be very useful also to prevent depression, the excercises can make you feel aware about yourself and you life, and can help changing your mindset when you have low mood and a poor sense of accomplishment. I suggest the reading to all the people that are passing throughout a difficoult time, but always remember that this is just a book, you may need to start a more precise and specific therapy. The last chapter of the book is dedicated to the other helpful resources for serious depression situations.
Mental health is a topic I've been interested in and passionate about for a long time. The books I've read have helped me work through my own challenges, and with that in mind, I found this to be an excellent introductory book on managing depression.
What I liked most about it is how it addresses the different stages of depression and offers practical strategies and techniques for coping. It’s also conveniently sized, making it easy to carry around and refer to whenever you need a little guidance or just a refresher.
For anyone interested in mental health or looking to build a self-help library, this is a valuable addition. Hopefully, it will inspire you to explore other books on similar topics and deepen your understanding of mental wellness.
I'll definitely be exploring more books from this publisher in the mental health category, both introductory and more in-depth.
Coping with depression is a short book that I thought could ease me into a Counselling course I am studying for. I'm not severely depressed, please don't worry about me, because there'll be a lot more books of this nature popping up here and there.
This book was more suited to absolute beginners, who barely know what depression is, let alone how to cope with it. It had a few good bits of advice - such as, writing down your qualities as a person and the things you are grateful for so that when you enter that grim mental state of "I'm not good enough" you can remind yourself of how wrong you are.
I couldn't give it higher than three stars though, as most of their advice was to write everything down. If you've ever struggled to keep a diary, this is going to feel like a master's degree.
It was a short book which I don’t think is a bad thing considering the content and who the book is aimed at. If you are in the pit of depression you don’t want to be reading a thick book. Short and sweet is exactly what you need and that’s what this book was. It got straight to the point. The exercises in it were really helpful, they aren’t over complicated, take two seconds to do really once you’ve got it set up. Overall I’ve found this book really helpful and would refer back to in the future if I was struggling again.
A very clear and constructive introduction to coping with depression. Some very useful information and helpful activities aiding the changing of negative thoughts to more positive thoughts. For long term sufferers I would recommend a more in-depth help book, however I would say read this as additional help as it's very informative.
