This thoroughly revised and updated edition provides a critical and comprehensive overview of the origins of Fascism and the movement's taking and consolidation of power. Philip Morgan focuses on the workings of the first ever 'totalitarian' system and its impacts on the lives and outlooks of ordinary Italians. Morgan gives an explanation and interpretation of Fascism which locates its place in contemporary history and takes account of the recent controversial historiographical debates on the nature of the phenomenon.

Philip Morgan is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary European History at the University of Hull. His previous publications include Italian Fascism, 1919-1945 and Fascism in Europe, 1919-1945.
This is the best one-volume history of Italian fascism in English I have found. Somewhat dense, intelligent, analytical, clear. It probably requires some knowledge of the topic to fully appreciate. Highly recommended for serious students of the subject.
