'The Beginning of the End' is a pretty recent addition to the Adventure Time series of graphic novels. In fact, it's so new that there were a couple of characters in here that I didn't know about! I feel I may need to watch more of the show or at the very least consult the A.T. encyclopedia.
In this story, Finn has been kidnapped by Chronologious Rex, Master of the Fourth Dimension, for breaking a promise he doesn't remember making. He is taken on a trip down memory lane, through his past, present, and even possible futures. Back in Ooo, Jake enlists everyone's help to get Finn back before he is eliminated from time altogether.
This was very cute, and it was nice to revisit some of the characters I'd enjoyed from the series. It does lean quite heavily on the reader's pre-existing knowledge, though. The art style was subtly different, which I enjoyed - I like how Marina Julia portrayed Princess Bubblegum especially.
In this post Adventure Time era, this book was conveniently thematic as it touched on the length and breadth of Finn and Jake's adventures. Naturally it had to be a time travel story but it made good use of this opportunity to examine both Finn's past and some of his possible futures. It's a great adventure that pulls on a good number of different characters and references a lot of key moments across Adventure Time history.
Of the various tie-in comics in the Adventure Time expanded universe, I think the most effective are the spin-off miniseries, often focusing on fan favorite characters who have a relatively limited time in the show itself, and tying them more directly to the events of the show as it began wrapping up its bittersweet run in 2018.
Beginning of the End, written by Ted Anderson and illustrated by Marina Julia, for instance, continues the series' strong replication of the TV show's voice and style while also brining some unique ideas as well. Serving as a fun and nostalgic retrospective for many of the weird one-shot characters and plot twists of the show thanks to a strange time-eating entity, this comic is a great nostalgic send off for fans of the show.
This one-shot volume is an unexpected therapeutic entry in the ever expanding universe of Adventure Time comics. What I love the most about this volume is how it brings to the forefront some of the recurring themes of the show (time, friendship, heroism, and life) to provide an entertaining, deep, and necessary story. As Finn faces the possible threat of being erased from time for breaking an oath, he has an opportunity to look at his past, and possible futures, while his friends scramble to somehow save him from oblivion. Many of the ideas presented here hit very close to home, and moved me. That's the beauty of the Adventure Time universe, in its multiple media: it always has a message that might just help you in times of need. I highly recommend you read this when going through an existential crisis.
I’m really disappointed that I didn’t understand as much of this as I’d hoped to. I like to say I’m a big fan of Adventure Time but in reality I haven’t seen enough of it to fully understand this comic. I watched a few of the oldest episodes and random ones here and there since then. This story really relies on a heavy knowledge of Jake & Finns adventures as this comic is based on them travelling through time and re-visiting a lot of their previous adventures. Looks like I have a lot of Adventure Time-watching to do so I can go back and re-read this one day with more knowledge of the series! Needless to say I still found this to be a fun adventure and I loved the artwork & colours! I picked this up mainly for a challenge to “read a book with the word ‘time’ in the title” for which I made this fit.
