There were a fair amount of issues with the writing itself, but I understand that these books are more about quantity than quality. Overall, I thought it explained the general history well. You could certainly get most, if not all, of the same information on Wikipedia without looking too far, but the way this book was put together made it an easier read. Not bad for the price.

The time period covered is from around 1100 BC to 600 CE. Greece is noted as having given birth to the concept of democracy, the basics of geometry, medicine, philosophy and the Olympic Games, among other things.

A lot of Greek history deals with their city-states, how they were founded and how they almost all ended up warring against each other. This even extended to invasions from other countries so that, eventually, Greece fell to invaders.

The early Olympic Games are discussed including the specific events. The various internal and external wars are covered along with specific people such as Solon, Hippocrates, Cleopatra, Hadrian and Alexander the Great.

The rise of Christianity and it's effects on Greece is also examined. How Greek culture impacted on other areas is another topic covered.

I feel it's kind of a shame that the Greeks spent so much time fighting each other. If they could have united and further developed their mechanics, their philosophy and their science (they even realized there were such things as atoms) then the entire world could have ended up more advanced than it is today.

An interesting book indeed.

If someone dared the narrator to systematically mispronounce every proper noun in Greek History and a generous handful of common English words as well, it would explain the audiobook. I can’t easily imagine any alternate explanation. His diction is clear and confident; he doesn’t stumble or hesitate in the least. But he hasn’t the slightest clue what he’s reading. It’s definitely NOT a bot. A bot would get all the individual words right but not know what the sentences meant. He’s actually a good narrator but without a ghost of a notion about the subject matter. The writing on the other hand could very well be an AI. If you’re pretty familiar with Greek history but would like a quick review of the basic facts, go ahead. Otherwise, seek elsewhere.

A very informative book, covering a long period of Greek history.

A very well written and informative book about Ancient Greece and its history. It was a relatively fast read, less than three hours which included a few breaks. This book makes me want to read more about Cleopatra, whom I had forgotten was Greek in her origin. I've always been fascinated with Cleopatra and hopefully, this will give me a little push to find out more about her. I was surprised by how late in the timeframe that Christianity came into Greece. I may read more on Alexander the Great too.

The first half is a pretty good intro to ancient Greece, but the second half is about the time after Greece became a part of the Roman and later Byzantine empire and didn't really focus enough on Greece as much as on people and events that affected the entire empire and thus Greece as well.

There are a few parts where it felt like the author was paid not by the word but the opposite, making sentences really short and quick for no real reason.

I decided to read this for my 2022 challenge and was surprised to actually like it. It is a quick review of Ancient Greece. It gives just enough detail to have you follow its history. There are a couple of chapters that I am wanting more information to learn because of the interesting way it was described. If you want to learn a little something about Greece history, this is worth it.

Decent. It's pretty much all in the title. There were a couple times where it started to feel like a history of Rome (or some other invader of Greece); but overall a good study of Ancient Greece and their impact on the Western World.

Overview

A broad overview of the cradle of Western Civilization with only a passing look at the Age of Pericles after Salamis which should have been more detailed as this was the period that epitomized the Glory that was Greece.
