First Mate’s Accidental Wife by Eve Langlais

Science fiction romance on the humorous side. First in a series although it is littered with references to characters in other series by the same author. It had me looking a few up a couple of times to confirm. You don’t need to have read any of the others to fully enjoy this adventure into space.

Filled with wry humorous remarks on earth customs, norms or commercial products.
“Then again, once upon a time, humans had five toes. The fifth one being utterly useless and only rarely appearing in babies nowadays.”

Lightheaded and romantic. A joy to read.

Excerpt:
“The translator embedded into his auditory channels—which was a polite way of saying jammed into his ear and fused to the drum—communicated directly with his brain so that he heard the actual speech. What his translator couldn’t do was make it interesting.
He tuned in to find his captain and the ugly Kanishqui leader yapping about the usual boring stuff.
“Looking mighty fit,” Jameson remarked. “Have you been working out?”
Gargle, spit, swallow. “Lifting some weights. Eating my enemies.”
Funny how many species considered the ingestion of sentient races as a necessary thing for strength. Some still believed they absorbed the knowledge and power of the entity they ate. In the case of the K’ahmelons—a bipedal winged reptile race from the jungle planets in the Rinfrst Galaxy—they truly did.”
Excerpt From First Mate's Accidental Wife by Eve Langlais
This material may be protected by copyright.

I don’t know if we will ever meet the K’ahmelons but it’s entertaining that the comment about the race is included. But don’t think by the excerpt that it’s dark. It just has a lot of data dump in the first 15 pages. Get past that and you’ll be flying through space anticipating the happily ever after.

Fair warning: as usual the epilogue leads you into the next book.

I read Eve Langlais for the laughs. Not because I want a complex plot or an intense love story. Just the laughs. In The First Mate’s Accidental Wife, there are plenty of fish/squid/sushi jokes about the Kanishqui, the alien race the heroine Mishi is rescued from. Also, believe it or not, the universe is crazy for chocolate, which I find to be both silly and obvious. But the banter between Mishi and First Mate rescuer Damon, was the best. They start off antagonizing each other and end up merely irritating each other, but will all sorts of love and respect behind the words. And humor.

There is quite a bit of coarse language which I can do without. When reading, it is easy to overlook, and I often do. But is is not so easy when listening to the audiobook.

I did not care for Logan McAllister’s narration. His reading was very slow. I turned the playback speed to 1.25 and that helped, though it results in clipped words. However, it was good enough and the story was entertaining enough for me to finish listening.

The First Mate’s Accidental Wife is a short novel so if you are looking for some pure entertainment, it may be just the book for you.

I won the author's audiobook giveway and picked this book. My review is unbiased.

I read both audible and ebook. I'll go ahead and put both reviews here.

Book:
This doesnt have the same feel as her earlier work that I enjoy. Like her Lion's Pride and Kodiak Point and a couple other series that were earlier. I have read some of her more recent and she's probably shifted a little in her writing and has changed it up a little. We just get so used to how an author writes and we expect it all the time. They change their styles like we change genres I am sure. I'll be honest and say her newer stuff has taken getting used to. I'm not quite there yet but I still enjoy her stories and I still laugh so thats ok. Its just going to take time to wrap my head around it. I liked the story but I had trouble liking Michi at first. I dont really start to like her until around the end. She seemed a little vapid and full of herself but perhaps thats how she is and was brought up in privilege. It got annoying sometimes. I will say I LOVED Damon. He was so funny and man was he mad and pouted a little that he was married. Ha. That was fun to watch. It was fast in this book almost to the point where I couldnt believe they loved each other that fast but again its PNR and sometimes its that way. I will say that I was a smidge disappointed in the love scenes. They weren't spectacular like I am used to. Maybe it was because they kept getting interrupted and so when it did happen it just kinda meh ok moving on. All in all enjoyable but it did have its fair share of choppy waters.

Audio:

Sorry to say I didnt like the audio much. The narrator wasnt horrible but he wasnt great either. Its hard for a male to do female voices. Or at least as close as possible and I get that. It felt like he really didnt try. Its like my husband trying to sound girly. He was very monotone too. No enthusiasm in parts where it should have been. To be fair it wasnt like that throughout the whole book. There were times it was fine so it just wasnt consistent. No way to tell the different characters who are speaking. Like a different voice for each character. A lot of narrators can do that but it appears this guy doesnt or cant do that. I wasnt impressed with this one. I've heard him before and he's done a better job in those but this one not so much...sorry.

As a real lover of SFR and Space Opera, I enjoyed much of this book enough to read the following two sequels. The story is solid with good world building and interesting aliens. The romance component is almost comedic which makes sense as this author also writes that genre. I do very much like the equal or higher standings of the female main character, no male dominance here.

There are several elements that I did not care for as much. It is well written, although very simply, maybe 7th grade reading level, which is actually recommended to appeal to the most readers. I could have accepted that except for the atrocious editing flaws. In three or four spots it was obvious that auto correct had made terrible changes, some parts of sentences were garbled or mixed up, leaving the reader to basically guess for the meaning (not real typos, worse). I wondered if the editor or author had gotten interrupted at these points or if there was no proof reader. This may be normal for this author who is extremely prolific. As a romance, I enjoyed the comedic moments. Normally I prefer more erotic SFR and historical romance. I found the sex scenes a bit flat. There were only a couple of them. Although fairly explicit, they seemed literarily rushed more like an insert and epilogue.

This book was not a 3 star but actually not quite 4 either but has a good story and only takes a few hours to read.

This is part of a trilogy in the In the Stars Romance series.

First Mate's Accidental Wife
The Cyborg's Stowaway
The Captain's Secret Daughter

Book 1 and 2 were not enjoyable to me. They've got dubcon, power imbalances, misogyny. I think this author thinks that a man calling a strange woman "sweetheart" is actually a real term of endearment. When she mentioned it in book 1, I thought it was surely sarcasm, but then she says it again in book 2. Book 1 also goes out of it's way to describe that human servants were having a great time being diddled by the aliens. These are far from the only instances.

Book 3 was okay for me actually. The prisoner thing felt more justified because mfc did commit a terrible crime. And even so, it felt like she had more agency over herself and the story. The premise was just weird as hell, too. Points for creativity there.

This uses a interesting trope. The rescue is in danger of failing but if they marry all will work out. Michi is ready to be rescued and eager to marry. Damon on the other hand knows he does not want to be married. It was fun to watch the two interact. The dialog keeps the fun going. I listened to this as an audio book and through the narrator missed playing up the humor. I did enjoy seeing Michi and Damon and liked the hint about the next book that showed up at the end.

Love at second Bite

This was a wonderful amalgamation of the alien worlds. It was a true story of new beginnings for Damon and Michonne. They must learn to work together to get everything they desire.

3.25⭐️ This was pretty funny and I enjoyed it. There was action and appropriate amount of smut without it getting ridiculous. It could have been longer and I would have loved if we got more of them being together. Overall its pretty cool. I also like the side characters a lot.

At first I thought it was just going to be a variation on the same story – girl stows away on space ship, is discovered, fights with the crew, falls in love with a member of the crew, etc. There’s nothing wrong with those stories, and I highly enjoy them - but Eve Langlais has managed to add a new twist!!

Damon accompanies his Captain on a visit to another ship. His job is to locate and retrieve a kidnapped female. Michonne is the daughter of a crime lord, and the Captain has been hired to rescue her. When she and Damon are cornered, Michi comes up with a novel way to save them – and their marriage (and the drama) begins!

The interpretation of the Kanishqui dialogue is hysterical, and kept me laughing for quite a while! It is nice to have Michi be neither a true fainting damsel, nor a harridan prone to violence. She’s been raised in luxury and educated well, and is ready to find a mate and settle down. This isn’t exactly part of Damon’s plan, but she still tries to win him over. All Damon wants to do is continue with his First Mate duties aboard the Gypsy Moth, and leave the command-type duties to the Captain. Who wants all of that responsibility? He certainly isn’t interested in losing his heart, but lose it he does.

Once they finally get to ‘safety’, they are pulled apart and their marriage dissolved. Will Damon realize he loves Michi in time, and go to find her? Or will he be too late?

Definitely a worthy read, and I recommend it. I like how there are mentions of items and people from the author’s other space-themed books – it ties everything together into the feeling that this is just part of the whole. It’s a big universe out there, but everyone is connected.

well... Ok then.

I confess, there is a trope that is often used in futuristic/fantasy/time travel sorts where the "H"(and I use that term loosely), through chicanery gets the h in a position where she's considered married to him and thus subject to his laws, such as they are, and I hate it. Because every damned time it happens, the h is forced to give up everything she knows and is expected to just...get over it...because he's so hawt. (eyeroll).

And while I'm not in favor of the reverse happening either, in the hands of an author known for humor, the results can be very entertaining - as I've just discovered. Note, the author has had her fair share of heroines stolen away and expected to go along with it. She's also the only author who has ever had an even vaguely realistic reaction from an unhappy, and very reluctant female. Granted, it was off-page, but the blue guys (mentioned once in this book) discovered the hard way that women really prefer to have a choice.

And now we have... the H - first mate and not really wanting to hold the position of captain, and the h - daughter of an intergalactic mob boss, kidnapped with intent of a forced marriage by a race of octopi, and rescued (sortof) by said H... She ends up rescuing him by virtue of conned marriage, and well, he's not pleased when he figures out he's actually married. There is a bit of mayhem, and eventually, consummation which, in keeping with the impression of being a harlequin presents spoof, is not nearly as detailed as much of the author's other works.

In the end, daddy is happy for her because she chose a guy she cared for rather than going for wealth...and there's the set-up for the next in the series. Hmmm.

Michonne or Michi has been kidnapped and the “Gypsy Moth” has been sent to go rescue her. Damon is the First Mate of the Gypsy Moth and it’s his job to find and bring her back. But on the way rescuing her things take a slight turn. Let me start off by saying the book is like a combination of “Princess Bride meets Shrek.” LOL You have a damsel in distress and a hero. But with both stories, it is never as it seems.

Damon does not want a wife. He enjoys being the First Mate and a bit of a pirate. All Michi is is a big pain in backside. She acts all snotty and thinks she can control and manipulate him. He just wants to drop her off and be done with it. Michi figured she could work with Damon. He doesn’t seem too bright but she can model him. Plus he is rather hot, so why not work with what you have. But these two are just too funny. With Damon trying not to show any interest in Michi he only made it worse. And the twist in the story was unexpected but fun. It had me laughing. I look forward to reading “Cyborg’s Stowaway.”

This is the first space odyssey romance I’ve read by Eve, but as usual I’m glad I started this series. I listened the audio versions and they were short novellas. You won’t miss the fact that they aren’t long epic novels.

The first book is a great introduction to the Gypsy Moth crew, ship, and missions. I really like how the marriage of convenience comes about. This one is full of laughs as they try to maneuver themselves out of harms way. It seems he wasn’t the spouse her father wanted for her, so they get to fight on two fronts–her father and the groom she was stolen from. Don’t get too cozy in the story though because there’s a twist, even I barely saw coming. Their romance finally becomes real when he realizes he’s about to lose her. That makes the reunion all the better. I’m giving this one 4.5 of 5. It’s a cute story.

The first book from her new series, Gypsy Moth, First Mate's Accidental Wife is exactly what I've come to expect from Eve Langlais. A fast paced sci-fi romance with lovable characters and hilariously crazy situations.

In this story, First Mate Damon and his captain of the Gyspy Moth are hired to rescue a wealthy heiress from a tentacle aliens. However, one thing leads to another and Damon finds himself married to this heiress. Michonne has been waiting to be abducted ever since she can recall but isn't very satisfied with her tentacle captor. When Damon comes along to rescue her, marriage to this human is very tempting, considering the tentacle alternative. Marriage isn't all fun and games, however, especially when dealing with a murderous ex-fiance and an overprotective father in law.

If you're a fan of Eve Langlais, you won't want to miss this new sci-fi rom-com series.

Gypsy Moth Book One.

Michonne has been kidnapped by a Kanishqui and will soon be married to him. Damon is on a mission to free the daughter of his captain's friend, but when he finds Michonne they are trapped. Thinking quickly, Michi performs the mating ceremony of her people without informing Damon. Back on his ship, Damon is resistant to the change in his status and his relationship with this stranger. However, seeing her relationship with his shipmates quickly changes his mind.

If you're looking for a fun romp through space with pirates, princesses, cyborgs and aliens, this is the book for you!

Audio Review:
Logan McAllister delivered a straight forward narration of the story. He was not monotonous, but the intonations were very slight.

Surprise Marriage

When a rescue turns desperate and Damon finds the only way out is to pretend he's married to the woman he was tasked with to rescue, things aren't as cut and dried as he thinks. In his haste to free Michi from her unwanted betrothed, he repeats a line she asks him to say, and unbeknownst to him when she bites his bottom lip, he is now married to her for real according to Dkar tradition. The story is filled with emotional turmoil, exciting rescues, sexy encounters and an enormous amount of fun squishy descriptions and an unexpected close family betrayal. Loved it!!

Fun, fast paced and entertaining. I really enjoyed how the leads in this book came together. Somehow Eve manages to make highly entertaining romances that keep me turning the page to see what comes next. I liked that there were references to other books including Milhail and Rafe, cyborgs and other kidnapping aliens. I feel like I can always count on something humorous and engaging when I read books by Eve Langlais and this book delivers. Glad that there will be more to come in this series.

Fast, funny, and fabulous e-vacay!

I just enjoyed the most charmingly funny SF romance - First Mate's Accidental Wife by Eve Langlais. I haven't chuckled and giggled like this in a long time. Damon is a hero cast in the Harrison Ford/Han Solo mold, while Michonne is just perfect as the innocent little venus fly trap that attracts hm into inescapable peril. And has him loving it! This is a quick afternoon's read, a delightful break from the daily grind, and a better tonic than anything ever poured with gin. Oh, yeah.

Damon is everything you love about Han Solo, Starlord, and Lone Starr… except that he’s not the captain of his own ship, a shortcoming that Michi points out. Even so, he’s sexy, confident, funny and competent, and I love every time he referes to the mob boss’ daughter as “princess”.

The book was a quick read, but even so there was time to introduce us to lots of different species and a few very interesting settings. Langlais definitely transported me away on a fun sci-fi adventure, while delivering a relationship that you want to root for. I’m looking forward to the next books in this series, while also wishing we could get a book meeting the rest of Michi’s sisters!

The book was cute and entertaining. Damon is sent by the captain to rescue Michonne while he distracted the people who kidnapped her. They had issues as they tried to escape. Michonne then decided to "help" by making him her husband. This marriage is irreversible unless by his death. Follow along with the antics theses participate in as he tries to figure out how to annul the marriage while she tries to get him to stay. She also is a princess so she doesn't obey very well.

I enjoyed the book and will be watching for more.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this story. I enjoyed Michonne. She could not fathom how all her sisters found amazing males but she is reduced to having someone who just seems so.. average. Damon was not trying to marry anyone and Michonne is someone that he refuses to accept. I loved their banter and I enjoyed all of the shenanigans that they got into. I cannot wait to see what happens with the Cyborg in The Cyborg's Stowaway: In the Stars Romance.

So many overplayed cliches!

The alpha H is a huge rake: “stuck with one vagina forever. It seemed worse in some respects than a prison sentence.”

The h is a very sheltered virgin: “I am ready for my deflowering!”

The world building felt forced, and the romance was just weird.

I am a huge fan of space suspense / romance novels, which is the only reason I am giving a 3 and not a 2. I’m holding out hope that the world/galaxy that was portrayed here gets a worthy romance novel in future EL books.

Damon was just supposed to rescue a damsel in distress, kidnaped and held at ransom. Instead he somehow ends up married to Michi.

I short story and a wonderful start to this new series by Ms Langlais. A Sci-Fi adventure I devoured. The bad boy and the prissy little princess these two test each other at every turn, arguing and disagreeing for the most part. The saying “there’s a fine line between love and hate” is true for this story.

Not my favorite.

This is Eve Langlais diet version. Serious they are married in 3 sentences of meeting each other and in love 1/2 a day later. Little dialogue. Minor society/world building. This is what you read when you are desperate. I will definitely go find some real Eve Langlais to erase this from my mind.

First Mate's Accidental Wife :In The Stars Romance(GypsyMoth Book 1) by Eve LANGAIS

A cute novella by Eve LANGAIS only complaint is that it's way to short ,I was thought enjoying reading the book and it seemed over before u knew it. Hopefully the next addition to the series ,Cyborgs Stow away will be longer. So enjoy Eve's wonderful sense of humor and colorful characters!!!

A cute, fast read.

Michi and Damon have a funny story. She is privileged and seems kind of loopy, but she knows what she wants. Damon. For his part, Damon fights the inevitable, and their interactions are funny. I loved this story because of the characters but also because of the unique world building and the story that reads so fluidly. It was fun, give it a shot!

With a title like this I had to find out what it's about. Well, it's about first mate's accidental wife. Kinda short but interesting world building and neat aliens and a whirlwind romance. I've not read anything by this author before, but I guess I'll have to continue with the series. The next book looks equally interesting.
